UPDATE! Rumor: Three Potential Obi-Wan Spin-Offs are in Discussion. Is Ewan McGregor Meeting With Lucasfilm?

obi-wan1A while back, Echo-07 reported a rumor that posited that Obi-Wan Kenobi might be getting a spinoff movie. Now, we have another rumor that dwarfs the original one by comparison: the original Jedi Master has a chance of getting an entire trilogy of films to himself.

From Cinelinx:

Our source has gone on to expand on last month’s rumor that the art department were drafting ideas for a Kenobi standalone:

“First up, they are not talking about an Obi-Wan spin-off movie but a trilogy of Obi-Wan movies. I need to stress that these movies are not connected. They aren’t part of a story arc but 3 separate Obi-Wan adventures set between Episodes III and IV.”

Huh….that’s interesting. This is coming based on a variety of art he’s seen being developed for the films based on ideas. If it were to happen, I like the idea of it not being an interconnected trilogy, but rather a set of films that can each stand on their own. What ideas could these three films center on:

“It seems like the 3 movie ideas are as follows: One set completely on Tatooine and two where Obi-Wan travels elsewhere in the Galaxy. Qui-Gon Jinn is very much present in these stories. So too is Owen Lars. Several characters from The Clone Wars T.V show would make an appearance. There would be flashbacks to Obi-Wan fighting in the Clone Wars.”

Nonetheless, the author of the above article has a few reservations about there being a whole trilogy of movies – he believes that some of these spin-offs could be reserved for other characters. In addition, he believes that at this point, three individual concepts for a single Obi-Wan movie are being discussed instead three concepts for three movies. While this does not confirm that Obi-Wan is getting an entire trilogy of movies, it does gather significant evidence that ideas are being discussed for at least one movie.

In any case, we imagine that Ewan McGregor surely has his fingers crossed to show up for either possibility.

UPDATE!

Viral here. The latest movie rumors linked Ewan McGregor with Marvel’s Doctor Strange, but according to moviecricket the talks are for Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars spin-off.

Ewan McGregor has found his name put on a very select list of actors who are reportedly being considered for the role of Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Whilst this may still be true, the report claims Ewan McGregor is being groomed for the role of Stephen Strange and that a meeting is to take place between Marvel and McGregor to determine if he’d be interested in playing the Sorcerer Supreme. We have been told this is not quite accurate. According to the source the meeting is in fact between Disney and Ewan McGregor where they will discuss the possibility of the actor reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the rumoured Star wars spin-off trilogy.

An Obi-Wan stand-alone movie, was always the most logical thing for me. Especially because it’s one of the most beloved SW characters, and the fact that Ewan McGregor is in his best years. But a trilogy of films sounds a bit too much. We have to remember that Lucasfilm have planned up until 2020 and beyond already, so the idea that they would suddenly decide to add in a trio of movies is pretty unlikely. And while this report mentions a meeting with Disney I think it’s more accurate to say Lucasfilm (mainly Kathleen Kennedy), because that’s who is making the decisions.

If Ahsoka’s fate is not explained in Rebels, this would be a great way for her to make an appearance.

This is exciting. I hope this is true. A spinoff trilogy for each main character (Yoda, Boba, Han) is far more fun than just one movie per character.

I would love to see Ewan back as Obi-Wan. He was pretty much the best part of the PT. However, these will be tricky movies to pull off. You will be treading on sone sensitive areas with the Lars family, Luke, and communing with Qui-Gon. It’s better not done rather than done poorly.

As a side note will the first movie be titled Obi 1, then the second and third, Obi 2 and Obi 3? 😉

For me it’s a good idea.
Obi-Wan is the best part of PT and Ewan did a good job. Character has lots of interesting stories to tell after Clone Wars.
Obi wan travelling alone through space in different missions could be great. And seing concept art from E7 probably will be in good hands

I think Lucasfilm should listen to the fans – we are crying out for an Obi-Wan film or films far beyond the proposed spin-offs. There has never been a better opportunity for Ewan to really shine as Obi-Wan. Please let’s start the SW spin-offs with Kenobi rather than a Han or Boba Fett movie.

So are these the famed spin-off movies to play between the saga movies or has all this changed now? I remember they distinctly said those movies were NOT going to center on saga characters, so I wonder is this something in addition to those spin-offs?

Ewan is 43; Sir Alec Guinness was 62 when he played Ben in IV.

The way I see it, Ewan has about 20 years to do 3 unrelated movies. Plenty of time. One or two of them should be off Tatooine since he seems to be very familiar with Mos Eisley spaceport for traveling.

Each movie could easily be years apart, keeping the impression that Ben mostly remained a hermit while occasionally helping Bail Organa on Alderaan or whatnot. Plus, I’d love to finally see Disney and a much better director and writer do Ewan justice.

I’m sure they can age up Ewan a bit when it comes to telling the story of a slightly older Obi-Wan. As the article states, Ewan is in his best years – the perfect years – to capitalise on Obi-Wan’s popularity.

They also don’t need to rush to give us three Obi-Wan movies. I’d like to see his possible trilogy spread out over the years some while Disney works on other films.

Plus, I think it would be cool to at least see one film where Ewan is naturally close to Alec’s original age in IV.

Love this idea, Obi-Wan getting to know the wretched hive of Mos Eisley would be a fun story.

Also, highlighting why Obi and Owen don’t get along would be great. Perhaps even throw in a situation that could retcon why Obi says Owen is his brother in the ROTJ novelization?

Obi-Wan is my Favorite Character… but Disney is not going to go back and tell stories that have been told. that is why the EU was made non canon. so news stories could be made up.
Obi-Wans story was told, its done. anything about obi-wans past would be telling a story we already know the ending too.
If anything the Standalones will support and build up the trilogy so Episode IX will be the Grand Finale of all movies ever.

No there will definitely be more movies after SW7. They might start a new Trilogy with a whole new cast set in The Old Republic Era, or Hundreds or Thousands of years after SW7 or continue and build upon the storys Established in the upcoming movies

IMHO, they’re not going to do one or the other; they’re going to do both.

VI easily could’ve been the last episodic film. The series looked like it was over. Instead of VII, we could’ve gotten the first Old Republic film in a brand new trilogy. But how would the fans have reacted to that compared to what we’re getting? If the new cast does really well, you don’t think fans will eventually beg Disney for more installments?

Mark my words: Expect the new cast to eventually return to do Episodes X-XII. This is Disney we’re talking about here.

Gotta say, I really like the idea of an Obi Wan standalone movie. Of all of the ideas put forth so far for the spin-off films (Boba Fett, young Han Solo, etc.) this is the only one where I feel there is a legitimate story to be told.

Look at the scene in Obi Wan’s home in ANH. The walls are covered with mementos suggesting that he was not idle during his years on Tatooine. Now obviously, the decor was originally designed to reflect years of travels as a Jedi Knight, but now that it’s been established that Obi Wan went into exile with little more than the shirt on his back, it’s reasonable to assume that he went off-planet at least a few times over the years.

Also, there’s the fact that in the PT Lucas almost completely ignored the implied tension between Obi Wan and Owen, as well as Owen’s strong feelings about Anakin’s choice to leave Tatooine. Perhaps this could at least be generally addressed in an Obi Wan stand-alone movie.

Plus, Obi Wan clearly has been to the Mos Eisley cantina before, presumably to hire a freighter pilot. That would fit in nicely with a stand-alone movie.

I agree, it sounds a bit much to expect a trio of Obi Wan movies, and at the moment I tend to agree with the notion that three different concepts for one movie have been drafted, rather than treatments for three separate films. But, if they were to do three and they had good, solid stories for them AND got Ewan aboard for all three… hell man, I wouldn’t complain! ;^)

I agree, the lack of Owen and Obi tension in the prequels was a major oversight and one that could be corrected. Especially if both actors are on board!

It would be nice to see a Kenobi movie. McGregor is an accomplished actor whose talents were not utilized in the prequels. With the right director, and story, who knows. Ewan was nominated for an Academy Award I believe for Trainspotting so it would be cool to see him take Kenobi to new heights.

I think three Kenobi movies is too fuckin much though. Just make one great one and that would be fine.

Ewan was a fantastic Obi Wan. Since the EU has been retconned, all we really know is Obi wan has spent time building a life of Tatooine. There is plenty of potential for a film on or off tatooine. As long as Darth Vaders stays out of it, im happy (any interaction between III-IV between these two would cheapen the episode IV confrontation…)

I think that the best way to go for a film would be some sort of threat to Luke OR Leia that Obi-Wan helps out with. Maul maybe?

  • October 16, 2014 at 6:22 pm
    Permalink

So if they plan to make “Obi Wan” Kenobi movies set between III & IV, they couldn’t be “Obi Wan” Kenobi movies… They would have to be “Ben” Kenobi movies because he said himself “I haven’t gone by the name of Obi-Wan since… oh, before you were born.” But even if he had forgotten the time frame and had still used that name after Luke was born, it couldn’t have been consistently for much longer. I could see old acquaintances say: Obi Wan Kenobi! but he could be like, I go by Ben Kenobi now. I just really hope that they pay attention to the small details when it comes to any spinoffs of original characters.

They can always cover up any discrepancies by using the classic Kenobi line:

    “…from a certain point of view…”

    For example:
“Well, my name was ‘Obi-wan’ but from a certain point of view, its ‘Ben'”

“I lied to Luke about his Daddy, but ya know, only from a certain point of view.”

Not only was Ewan McGregor underused, but Alec Guinness’s “Ben” was also a sad waste of his talent. I think that the Character Obiwan has spent too long being crammed between other scenes.
Compared to the Skywalker Clan, the audience is really only shown the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the emotional complexities of old Ben.

I think that Kenobi deserves a better fuller story of his psyche, on one condition:
    It can’t be a blockbuster.
the way I see it, Obi-wan has got serious skeletons in his emotional closet, and he is so much more than he appears. I think of obiwan more as a Bruce Wayne (Tim Burton style) sort of character as opposed to a John McClane (the dude in Die Hard) The guy’s smart,
if the film is gonna be named after him, you need to make it a smart film.

for the record, i Love Star Wars BECAUSE it’s a whirlwind adventure shoot-em-up, but that’s not obiwan’s deal.

Please let this Obi-wan trilogy be alternate prequels! I’ve always wished they could salvage something of Ewan’s wonderful acting amidst the less-than-satisfying prequel context. He’s actually not too old either. There’s no reason Anakin couldn’t have turned to the dark side when Obi-wan was the age Ewan’s appears to be now. That would be a realization of Disney’s purpose (as stated by Jimmeny Cricket) of making impossible-seeming dreams come true.

Short of that I think his presence would taint this new phase of Star Wars with prequel-ness and, despite the good parts of ROTS, I’m not able to envision the prequels as part of the same universe as the OT without the whole thing falling apart.
