The force was strong in this show. I really didn’t know what to expect, even with all the promos. I was not disappointed. One word: fun!

It was an exciting show with a fun story, fun dialogue, fun action. It was just fun!

I really got more of an “original trilogy” feel from this than anything that had been produced in the past … well … decade or two.

So, good job to Disney and the new team. They did a great job and I can’t wait until the next episode!

I agree 100% the show was way better than I thought it was going to be. I’m a huge The Clone Wars fan so I had high expectation and you know what, Dave Filoni (producer of The Clone Wars) did not let me down, one bit!! I can’t wait to see what’s in store next!!

I agree, watched it today, it was fun and short, wanted to see more afterwards. Liked the dialogue and the old trilogy feel.
What a relief no use of – with all due respect! can’t stand it, must puke immediately if I hear this line ever again –

Very optimistic. Yes they tried to cram a lot into forty minutes, but I was never bored and I assume future episodes will allow for slower pacing. Obi-wan mentioning ‘A New Hope’ was just sweet enough not to be lame. Too bad it’s a week and a half until the next one.

It wasnt as cheesy as I imagined it would be. The kids and I loved it.. the animation is not on the level of clone wars I find.. wookies looked so so..

I agree. I expected that show to be childish and dumb but I surprised myself to love it as much as my kids did.
I didn’t like the wookiee desing neither. As I don’t like texture of Ezra’s hair who looks like plastic to me. Clone Wars were better on that matter. But I think the characters are much more developped in ‘Rebels’, which is probably why I enjoy the show.
I’m more cautious on the story, but we’ll see how it is developped.

I for one like the new animation better. The Clone Wars’ animation tried to be too realistic and lacked design flare. By cartooning it up a bit, Rebels has given something that feels more expressive.

Where’s that guy who always comments on this board and says ‘just wait till you see it before you judge it.” Well, I want to throw a pie in his face. This show was just as childish and nonsensical as I thought it was going to be… and the worst part of it is that this is the pilot. It’s just going to get more nonsensical from here.

I just found A New Dawn to be a very slow story. A long drawn out story arc with very little adventure or fun. Also the writing felt quite rushed. I have faith though that future stories with more time to write will be far more exciting

I for one prefer less adventure, because it is in between the adventure that actual substance lies. This is a much better book than the teen fiction adventures I’ve read that are mass-produced by many other franchises.

I was very against this show. It just felt wrong from all the promos and honestly I wasn’t that big of a fan of the Clone Wars.

All I can say is… WOW. Total reversal of opinion. This was outstanding. The pacing, dialog and plotting already leaps ahead of 70% of the clone wars. I hope they manage to juggle this kind of storytelling and character development going forward.

I’d hate to see it devolve into episodic one offs that feel like filler.

Seriously… this show actually made me grin and feel that Star Wars magic. A feeling I haven’t felt since… KOTOR.

It was ok, I liked it. It wasn’t some awesome fucking great show or whatever but a good start and hopefully progresses well. The animation definitely needs an upgrade but it’s possible that’s the look of the show Disney wants.

With the constant theme of Disney’s SW being “get back to basics” or “just the basic/classic style” perhaps the mfs are purposely avoiding a high-detailed show to get an “older” look like a late 70’s/early 80’s cartoon (OT era).

Or maybe it’s simply a lousy fucking choice of animation style, who the fuck knows.

    • October 4, 2014 at 3:10 pm

Yeah. I’m surprised a company like Disney doesn’t offer better animation quality for the show. Why were some of the Imperial officers so pale? What was up with Wookiees?

Overall, the show’s a lot less childish than I was expecting. It looks like it could be a real winner. However, I would offer two suggestions on how to improve the show:

    1) Make the actions scenes more intense and engaging.

The action in the pilot was nice, but I felt the characters could’ve showed more passion and focus. Compare the intensity and characters’ focus in the TIE Fighter fight of the pilot vs. Episode IV. The characters in the pilot are way too casual and distracted by unimportant conversation to give the threat the intensity it deserved. Meanwhile, IV’s characters kept you on the edge of your seat because they ALL were IMMEDIATELY and INTENSELY focused on defeating their enemies. It was respectfully treated as a life-or-death situation, with a big cheer moment to celebrate the victory. “Yay, we did it!” 😀

    2) Make the characters’ dialogue, line deliveries and interactions more emotional and interesting. Punchier. “Faster, more intense.”

The OT’s dialogue and character moments kept me engaged between the action scenes because they were spoken with confidence, passion, mild humour and lots of heart. While I did find myself caring more for the Rebels when they went back for Ezra, so many of the character scenes were ho-hum. I wanted to care more, but I often found myself slumped in my chair.

I would trade ALL of McQuarrie’s designs for a more emotionally engaging show because at least I know I won’t be bored. We’ll see how the other episodes go.

After 31 long years, the magic and awe of Star Wars has finally returned. The Clone Wars has nothing on this show. Its nostalgic, its fun, it knows exactly what it is. Its going to be great for kids and adults alike, overall it was inspiring.

Quick comment on the animation quality, everyone just needs to remember that they are stylizing it based of the original concept art by Ralph McQuarrie (which I think is cool). However I do agree that the Wookiees could have been better. Other than that though, it was fine.

I’m not going to be watching this show for the animation anyway, the story is what drove this along at full force.

All my doubt that I ever had in Disney is completely and utterly gone.

Yeah, I was hoping they’d save that for something bigger. ***spoiler*** In the book he never once uses it, and only Hera ever finds out that he can use the force at all.

  • October 4, 2014 at 4:42 pm
    Permalink

I’d say mediocre overall. I thought the beginning and the end were good but everything in between felt very rushed. I get that it’s a kids show but pacing is still important and you get a much better payoff when situations are properly setup. For example, they already NEED to bring in the Inquisitor character b/c the rest of the Empire has been shown not to be a threat to the heroes.

  • October 4, 2014 at 5:35 pm
    Permalink

Better than expected. However, I wish the action was more intense and focused (compare Rebels’ TIE fighter battle to IV’s) and the characters more interesting and engaging, with punchier dialogue and heart. A lot of the interactions were ho hum.

First of all, I’m laughing at the comments defending George Lucas by saying he’s a bold artist who did what he wanted. We are talking about contemporary mythology in the form of commercial films. I think these ten percent of prequel freaks honestly don’t understand the impact the OT had. Lucas was clever enough to know he needed to colloaborate to make the best films possible. The more power he got the less he cared about real, critical, collaboration.

It’s not that the prequels didn’t live up to my nostalgia, which is the most common “excuse” from you deluded prequel apologists. It’s just that there’s a huge difference between the original trilogy and the prequels because the original trilogy was shaped, thought about, designed, articulated and refined by myriad talented, passionate people. The prequels were made by an ungrateful spoiled man who resented his creation. He admits himself he’s not a good writer. He’s said that so many times. With that in mind, why did he write the prequels himself? We’ll I know one reason, because he didn’t care what the fans would think. We’ll sorry Georgie, but I liked when you cared about the various aspects that make up a good film and shaped the stories with other minds to get the best results. It’s not that I blame the guy or hate him. I just won’t delude myself and think that the prequels didn’t live up to my nostalgia, because it isn’t true. If Lucas would have brought in Lawrence Kasdan and maybe someone other than Rick McCallum (the ultimate yes-man), and actually cared about how the fans who built Lucasfilm would feel, just imagine how amazing the prequels could be.

I was very cynical about Star Wars: Rebels and really didn’t think I would like it. I figured that it would be nice to watch with my nephew, but expected it to be to childish. We’ll, after watching the first episode last night I am so surprised how much I enjoyed it. It really feels like Star Wars. So fucking much more than the prequels. It’s just written so well and makes such great use of the concepts of Star Wars. To see a character feel the force and not really know what it is, is totally the way to go story wise. Screenwriting is a craft and there are ways to make your audience feel engaged and feel suspense and all the wonderful things that make the visual medium so beloved by the masses. I am so fucking stoked for Episode VII. Now the only thing missing is the original unaltered films! I’d love to hear some prequel freaks respond to my points because nothing would be more validating, ya chumps!

    • October 4, 2014 at 9:49 pm
      Permalink

      One thing is validating…….

You will not ever get the original unaltered trilogy on Blu-ray.

Disney is not going to dis own the Prequels just because a handful of “Original trilogy” fans don’t like them.

Disney respects George Lucas enough to leave the 1st 6 films the way they are on the 2011 Blu-ray release.

      So……. Validated. Ya chump!

I have a feeling the original films will get released alongside the tampered later years Lucas versions. I think that they will just be very polite about it, kinda like JJ Abrams is being with his ideas on what makes a good Star Wars film. I mean you must see that it’s a bit weird that there isn’t HD versions of three of the most beloved films in existence. Star Wars was a real thing people liked before 1997 ya know, without those original unaltered films, fans like you wouldn’t have the comedy stylings of Jar Jar and kid Darth Vader.

          I do agree with you…….

After George Lucas in dead maybe.

Lucas did have people to answer to for the Prequels, that’s the problem. He had to make sure they were acceptable for a new generation of kids, had to make sure the visual fx were to todays standard so people wouldn’t complain about the fx not being what they could be, and every company under the sun wanted Star Wars a certain way so they could all make tons of money. Its not all cuz George wanted all this money for himself alone.

Its because George Lucas had to answer to too many people is the problem. If he only had himself to think of like back in the day then he could’ve done it differently

Unless you are 45 yrs old, I’m pretty sure that I’ve been watching Star Wars before you.
So ‘kid vader and jar jar’ away. I watched my nephews fall in love with Star Wars cuz of those 2 characters.
I (unlike a lot of older fans) realized that episodes 1-3 were for a whole new generation of kids.
As well as yes, the writing did suck in a few spots. But episodes 1-3 could not be viewed by us older fans the same way as the younger fans.
I mean I already did know what happened in the story arc. And I’m pretty sure most of the older fans were already aware of who Palpatine was. And that does take away from the cinematic viewing.

As far as the ’97 films, I’m cool with them.
I’m not gonna bash them cuz if they weren’t done…….then people would complain that they look dated when watched with the Prequels.

I have seen ALL versions of Star Wars in theaters, altered and un…….

The only thing I really did not like about this was the way the Wookies looked…that was some god AWFUL animation right there. I am really just curious what becomes of these two Jedi.. since in the OT even Yoda claims Luke is the last. I think it will be pretty lame to find out in Episode 7 that they are still alive..and finding out that they let luke face Vader and the Emperor alone…let alone none of the Rebel leader’s INCLUDING Leia informing Luke ” hey btw..your not the only one..and as a matter of fact luke..there is a young Jedi the same age as you! ALSO Organa KNOWS where Obi wan AND Yoda are hiding..so why wouldn’t he bring these Jedi to their master’s?????????? they better have a good way of explaining all of that shit…because right now it does not make any damn sense to me and it could ruin everything because it is making Obi Wan and Yoda’s exile meaningless.

I remember when the first Clone Wars animated movie came out. I was so skeptical about the entire concept. I thought to myself “Star Wars could never be a cartoon”… Even the animation took getting used to. Then to top it off, Anikin has an apprentice named Ashoka Tano?!?! But then it grew on me. Each episode I found myself more and more entrenched. Lol the animation got to a point to where it felt as if you were watching a movie with live actors. I made sure ton purchase each season on blu-ray and will always watch them from time to time. Now once again I find myself with the same feelings I felt about clone wars when it first started as I do about rebels. Originally I’m like “no way! Luke, Liea and Han are the sparks of the rebellion” etc. etc. Then I watched Rebles last night and still I’m not quick to give the “it’s gonna be great” label. But the scene that gave me goose bumps was when Kanan pulled out his light saber for the first time. Lol I was just as shocked as the storm troopers. That quick scene really linked everything we have ever known about Jedi and Sith and Star Wars as a whole. It made you think about all the epic battles from the prequels to the clone wars and beyond. And I thought to myself, if the short five min scene could bring that much emotion I could only imagine what a full season would bring. All in all I thought it was a great start. It’s bringing back the feelings I had when I was a young boy watching new hope!!!! I anticipate that when it’s said and done that Star Wars rebels will be an epic story line in the Star Wars universe. And I’m more than happy to bare witness. Only negative thing I have to say that every Monday it looks like I will have to sacrafice one quarter of Monday night football 🙂

For the most part I loved the episode. Filoni and the crew def. delivered and I have a strong feeling it will grow as memorable as Clone Wars.

    1. They absolutely nailed Mcquarrie’s concept art style they were aiming for. Everything from scenic shots to stormtrooper armor and tech. is straight out of OT.

    2. I’m glad the animation style and plot aesthetic holds its own. It’s not quite Clone Wars, and it doesn’t redundantly cater only to diehard OT fans. It’s not afraid to breathe a new energy into the franchise.

    3. While the pilot didn’t have enough run time to completely hook me on the drama, I’ve to say the characters were distinct and overall very well written. I’m sure we will get to the meatier emotional story arks.

    4. And lastly, lightsabers! Something that was sorely missed from the NT! The weapon had it’s “wow” factor back. The hum, the vibrating thin laser beam, the light aura around it felt special once again.

I’m very excited for the show and can’t wait to see more! The best is yet to come.

For the most part it was ok.
As what i said watching clips ships, landscapes, atmosphere, troopers, environments are so good.
The story is a Little better than i expected, taking it’s time, (expect a couple of bad decisions) and it will be nice to follow the path of the jedi who survived, more stories from rebel side and their high members, and see some kind of evolution in all the rebelión organization.
But, the characters animation it’s really really really bad. Expressions, hairs, movements…it’s all very lineal. They are so poor.
With another animation could be a really good show.

All good, but those Wookies were ATROCIOUS !!! I don’t know how Dave Filoni could have approved them ? Hope they make some changes if they are to appear in other episodes.

As it was said in the post about the Rebels lightsabers. They infact studied to try to make the animation look close to how the original trilogy was filmed. I have know what the characters looked and sounded like for a while via previews so I wasnt surprised. I guess the animation is what it is…….they specifically want it this way so doubt they will change it.

I just watched the show a few hours ago, and it’s AWESOME. The characters were great, the relationships were well established(Ezra and Zeb, hahahaha was great). The dialogs were awesome and the adventure was pretty good. But the pilot also had its problems, the wookiee visual was horrible, crap… I just have one thing to say about: “Free the money, Disney!”. And was very short, would be better if the episode had 1:30 hour. But in overall, I loved it. 8.5/10!

    Sorry about my english.

I thought it was a good, fun show. I wasn’t expecting to like it at all. It’s changed my mind. I could do without the plastic looking animation, the slingshot weapon, and the graffiti spraying, but overall it was a good show.
