UPDATE! Disney Confirms Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars Spinoff Movie for December 2016.

Disney

Marc Graser form Variety has some really interesting tweets from Disney’s  communications & entertainment conference…

Nothing new really but it’s good to hear that they are still going according to the initial plan – 1 Star Wars movie every year.

UPDATE!

And some more bits from Variety:

Walt Disney Studios admits it doesn’t have an awareness problem with “Star Wars” when it starts releasing new movies, beginning with next year’s “Episode VII.” The future of the franchise at the Mouse House, however, relies on getting the film right for fans and newcomers.

“This title is very well known out there,” and “the single most important thing is to make sure that this movie is great,” said Walt Disney Studios president Alan Bergman.

With a new animated series, “Star Wars Rebels” debuting on Disney XD, an expanded merchandise program, and the first live action film to debut in theaters in 10 years next year, the franchise’s presence at Disney is starting to be felt.

Yet a lot is riding on the success of “Episode VII,” out in theaters Dec. 18, 2015, since the J.J. Abrams-directed film will drive much of the interest in “Star Wars” across the rest of Disney’s divisions. In addition for new films, there are plans for more TV shows, licensing deals and theme park attractions.

“If we can get this right, it’s a huge opportunity for the entire company,” said Bergman, who wore Stormtrooper tennis shoes while discussing the studio’s upcoming film slate — a standalone film, to be directed by “Godzilla’s” Gareth Edwards, is already scheduled for Dec. 16, 2016.

Neato. Hopefully they’ll say what the project is about before Episode VII hits the silver screen.

It’s the Boba Fett spinoff. Haven’t heard an news on it in awhile, though…

I mean an actual confirmation that it’s about Boba Fett. All rumors point to that, but concrete proof stamps out rumors any day of the week.

Next they are going to “confirm” that JJ Abrams is directing Epidode 7. Frustrating. How about a title, guys?

They can wait as long as they want before releasing the title. They know we’re all going to see it anyway.

At this point, the only one I’d want to see replaced is Alice In Wonderland 2 with Tron 3. Even as a Wonderland movie, that movie made no sense.

I meant that it felt less like the kind of surreal you’d see in a C. S. Lewis book and more like really zogging weird. Like, instead of consuming Acid, it’d be more like downing your medical cabinet in one go, if you want to go by drug metaphors.

If Han Solo dies during EpVII, then a stand alone movie about a young Han (maybe meeting a young Lando) would seem to be an excellent ‘first’ choice.

too bad, I wish lucasfilm/disney would expand our notion of Star Wars, not keep it confined to OT characters. Next, we’re going to see the untold story of Chewbacca’s sad youth.

I’ve been saying this for a while. I think some of the rumors we are getting and the various locations could be related to the stand alone films or episodes 8 or 9. If it takes 2 years to make a movie, than the 1st stand alone has to be where episode 7 was a year ago. I’m sure some of the casting is already underway as well as some of the 2nd unit stuff. Just as Episode 7 was doing before the official start date.

    • September 17, 2014 at 11:13 pm

No, I don’t think so. Episode 7 does not have that many locations outside of Pinewood.

Thinking about the spinoffs, we don’t need to see the same characters. A movie like Enemy Mine could almost be thought of as a spin-off. The story must be good, the way the characters relate, and it has to agree with Ralph McQuarrie’s art. Not Avatar’s or anything like that.

She’s in the movie in some capacity. Carrie Fisher’s assistant tweeted something about being on set with his “Star Wars girls,” including Daisy, Billie Lourd (Carrie’s daughter) and Maisie.

Could be anything from glorified extra to minor supporting role or even that rumored character who is said to be minor in Ep7 but more important in Ep8 & 9. Or maybe that role went to Lupita Nyongo.

I am really hoping the Boba Fett spin off is just speculation. He is dead. No need to bring him back. I really cannot wrap my head around why so many people like him that much. Even his back story in the PT was pretty stupid like the entire PT.

My thoughts exactly, he is so overrated, I would much rather see a movie about Obi-Wan, Han, Darth Vader, Yoda, or even Sidious before a Fett movie

GENERAL SOLO: Today. Today… At the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen not only to believe in ourselves, but in each other. Today there is not a man nor woman in here that shall stand alone. Not today. Today we face the monsters that are at our door and bring the fight to them! Today, we are *canceling* the apocalypse!

Obviously Guillermo del Toro gave him some pointers. 😛

Episode 7 will be about a time machine. Luke will go back in time and rescue Vader, Boba, Yoda, The Emperor, Owen, Beru, Darth Maul, Qui, Jabba, Obi Wan, all of them so that they can live on and we can have more merchandise.

What tells you we won’t see any other characters from the franchise in the spinoffs? The story and main character might be Boba Fett (or whomever) but that does not mean we won’t see any other already known characters, afaik.

If they wont be about main characters, i would think fett counts as one of those. So who are characters that are not main?
    – IG88?
    – Dengar?
    – Lobot?
    – Amanaman?
    – Bib fortuna?
    – The Imperial Dignitaries?
    – Uncle Owen?
    – Mon Mothma?

Plenty of sub characters that they could make varied stories about, and I would imagine they interweave with elements of the main films, like some sets, parallel events etc – almost like “wow that was going on while luke and han were doing that…” For example an IG88 movie set during ESB where he is ends up being shot by fett on cloud city could be interesting.

I hope IG88 will be given some love, i know that in the “Shadows of the Empire” game both in his cutscene and boss battle he was quite a unnerving character.

Stories must be about humans and human relationships in order to work in the cinema. So IG88 fighting Stormtroopers for 120 minutes would quickly get boring, like Transformers.
