SPECULATION: Who’s Who In Star Wars Episode 7???

Now that the Big Casting Announcement has dropped, it is an understatement to say that the Blogosphere and pretty much the entire internets has blown-up with nerd-dripping excitement, as in dripping from all the brainsplosions happening around the world as I type! So now it’s on to the really juicy stuff — Which characters are all these great actors playing???

As you all no doubt recall, Disney released a detailed casting breakdown in June of 2013:
Late-teen female, independent, good sense of humour, fit.

Young twenty-something male, witty and smart, fit but not traditionally good looking.

A late twentysomething male, fit, handsome and confident.

Seventy-something male, with strong opinions and tough demeanour. Also doesn’ t need to be particularly fit.

A second young female, also late teens, tough, smart and fit.

Forty something male, fit, military type.

Thirtysomething male, intellectual. Apparently doesn’t need to be fit.

During the year or so that followed there was much speculation and gnashing of teeth as it was soon learned that Michael Arndt had left writing duties, replaced by JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan. The [perceived] controversy ocurred over a never confirmed feud between Abrams and Arndt about the direction of the script and who, exactly, were the main protagonists.

The rumored rift broke down thusly: Original Trilogy Big 3 vs Prequel Trilogy Heroes. Who would get more meat??? Well, now that the official cast has been announced, and we’re NOT sure that everyone has been announced, only principals, it appears that most of the characters from the first casting call breakdown have survived.

Here’s a semi-blind shot at who’s who in Episode VII:

Han & Leia's daughter?
Han & Leia’s daughter?

Late-teen female = Daisy Ridley = [Jaina] Solo

* Keep in mind that when we refer to a character’s EU name it will most likely be changed

Young twenty-something male = doesn’t seem to have survived this iteration from the casting sheet as John Boyega is twenty-something, but handsome = I wouldn’t wager money on my guess as to who his character is, perhaps Luke’s Padawan???

Late twenty-something male =  Oscar Isaac = [Jaicen] Solo = This would seem to be correct IF we are to believe this is all of the principal cast.  Our sources have suggested that the guesses as to who the Solo children are are pretty accurate. However, it appears fairly obvious they’re not twins.

Seventy-something male = Max Von Sydow = Bad Guy

Second young female = doesn’t seem to have survived this iteration . . . yet

Forty something male = doesn’t seem to have survived this iteration, although it could be Adam Driver paying this role a bit younger = Sith? Imperial? It has been long-rumored that he is playing a Bad Guy.

Who’s your daddy?

Thirty-something intellectual = doesn’t seem to have survived this iteration although it could be Domhnall Gleeson, like Driver, playing this part younger = the description reads like a good guy’s sidekick. A source close to Star Wars Episode 7 News has told us that Gleeson’s character is supposed to be the grandchild of Obi-wan Kenobi as speculated for quite some time. The difference of course being that the original rumor pertained to a mixed-race female.

And, lastly, Andy Serkis was a great wild card choice that came in late. It’s really unclear what role he will play, but presumed strongly by the fanbase that he will play some sort of alien or CGI-motion capture character. We shall see with Serkis, but great selection just to have this level of talent in Star Wars.
So as much as we can, and have, and will glean from this casting announcement we can probably learn a little more by who didn’t get cast. So check back for Part II.

I have a theory, that “Jacen” may even not be in that movie, he can be mentioned as gone for pilgrimage or something to better understand the Force, and in the 7th big three has big roles, and in the 8th “Jacen” is instroduced. I can’t see Isaac like Solo kid now, and yes may be they will still cast someone.

One possibilty, retaining some elements of EU as “ambiguously canon”, is that Jacen is regarded as already dead, the Darth Caedus story having played out already. Only Jaina remains. There could be some oblique references to her having had a brother who is now deceased.

You’re laboring under the false impression that EU is canon. Which has been made very clear that it is not. They may draw upon that source material for inspiration. But it does not suggest that they will use it all.

I have a theory that Jacen and Jaina won’t be in the film because they don’t exist anymore. Get over it people. EU is dead.

How does one make an overreaction of unfair judgment? You can overreact to something, and you can make an unfair judgement, but how does one overreact of unfair judgement, let alone in a prepubescent manner?

The more I try to make grammatical sense on what I’m sure you thought was a rather scathing commentary on my level of maturity, the more my head hurts. Could you at least explain how you came to conclusion that the whole world, save me, would suspend their disbelief of a Guatemalan actor with clearly Hispanic looks playing the part of the very Caucasian Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford’s son?

No. This trilogy has to be, needs to be about the next generation of the Skywalker bloodline. All 6 movies have been about the Skywalker bloodline, why change that in the last trilogy of the saga? There’s no point in calling it Episode 7 if it’s not a continuation of the Skywalker story.

At the table reading I’m sure Abrams would have grouped the actors according to how much dialogue they have together. Daisy was between Ford and Fisher, so it’s a pretty safe bet she plays their daughter.

Adam Driver was sat next to Sydow. I’m pretty sure these two will play villains (they have ‘villain’ written all over them). And if not these two, then who?

Hamill was sat the other side of the room to Ford and Fisher, which would suggest that Luke went a separate way after the events of RotJ. Perhaps he is living on Tattooine with the droids, which would explain why Daniels was sitting next to Hamill.

Gleeson was sat next to Daniels. So, I would guess he plays Luke’s son. The ginger hair would suggest a reference to a possible canon-version of Mara Jade (don’t forget that Karen Gillan gave her red hair to the SW crew, to be made into a wig).

This would leave Boyega and Isaac, who were placed close to Driver. So, I would guess they play friend’s of Driver’s character, perhaps with Serkis as a mo-cap CGI alien side-kick.

Nice guesstimate. However, Max von Sydow wasn’t at the reading or at least in the picture. Driver sat between Boyega and Kasdan.

However, I do believe you’re right that the grouping was meaningful. Very observant of you. Now, I could tell you what I think about the grouping but you’re pretty close IMO.

I was actually thinking the same thing. but the fact that Sydow was not in the group is leading me to believe he may be playing the ghost of Obi-won….Kenobi like the droids have been in every movie..i dont see why this would change. and “Rebel Scum” if you knew anything about group readings…you would know that the seating is very strategic. it has always been like that…do your homework and go watch the readings from the other six movies..it was the same way.

The way I see it, if Isaac and Ridley are the solo kids, is the following:

Imagine the plot being: Luke do have his padawan (Boyega) and aims at rebuilding the order using him, Ridley and Isaac (and other kids who have the force). Meanwhile Han Solo and Leia are occupied fighting the remaining of the empire and creating a new republic. Isaac and Driver are friends. Driver is training secretly to be a sith (by von sydow). However, the three train to be jedi but because they are not in this jedi order brainwashed thing since they’re little, they have a family/strong emotional attachment, or maybe isaac gets jealous of Ridley being better than him as “being a jedi”. Some can say he’s cursed by the skywalker legacy. So he gradually gets pissed, driver tells him about being a sith, and he gets seduced by the dark side of the force. And for some reason, at the end he tries to kill ridley, but han solo protects the daughter, sacrifies himself to leave her a chance (obi-wan saving luke) which means Isaac kills his father and do become a sith.

The way I see it it would fit: Harrison ford not wanting to be in ep7 rumors and having a great role, the movie being darker but not too much so new ppl can come and watch the movie, staying on a cliffhanger for ep8 means more money and disney is happy, it still leaves other cast to be in the story line, JJ wanted an environment more OT and you have a threatened jedi order/not everything is nice and cheesy, it leave space for some nice fights, especially in ep8 and ep9 with more sith vs jedi (imagine like the end of Harry potter with more balance in the ages of the fighters), can bring in Korriban (oups sry Morriban…) where they try to rebuild an army of sith whith driver and isaac leading, this could please the EU fans,

Or going like that, Luke tries to track down this rising army, sends Isaac, gets seduced because he’s pissed…

Lol sry I had new ideas poping up while writting.
Ps: I’m french sorry for the writting…

So it sounds like what many are saying is that the man who wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark and Empire Strikes Back needs to mine EU drivel for inspiriation? Star Wars is a drama/adventure that just happens to take place in a space setting. The basic plot and characters could easily be adapted to a different genre and still make a great, compelling story. The science fiction aspect serves as a brilliant complement. Star Wars works when story and characters are first and sci-fi second, not the other way around as in the EU. Mystery is also an important part of Star Wars and has kept people interested for 30+ years. I don’t need to know the back story of every cantina alien and what Boba Fett did before Empire. Not knowing is part of the fun. The prequels are awful because they did the opposite. They tried to explain eveything and focused on sci-fi visuals over content. How many shots of spaceships landing on landing platforms can you count in the prequels.
If Abrams and Kasdan can find the pulse and focus on the people we could get something truly great. If we go the other way, we will get a Disneyfied mess.
I loved Star Wars as a kid because it didn’t pander to me. We started off running and never slowed down. I was left on my own to catch up and think it though.

    • May 1, 2014 at 1:58 pm
      Permalink

I actually agree with most of what you said. Star Wars is better when they don’t try to explain everything and focus on character development. The only thing I’d take issue with is that you’re making blanket statements about the EU. What if I said I hated the movies b/c of the PT (which I don’t dislike as much as most BTW)? As with most things you have to take the good with the bad. Also it’s sort of inherent that a book is going to contain more detail than a movie so I’m not sure it’s fair to fault them for that.

    • May 1, 2014 at 2:28 pm
      Permalink

Look there is some good shit and some bad shit in the EU. What they should do is build on the good stuff, adapt it for the movies. It’s like Marvel Cinematic Universe. The original comics had some supremely lame material, but Kevin Feige takes the best and adapts it for the screen, which is different than the source material. Shakespeare took Ovid’s myths and adapted them for the stage, Tacitus, too. So they should not throw out the EU with the bathwater, but adapt it and improve upon it for the movie screen.

    • May 1, 2014 at 3:41 pm
      Permalink

Whether the EU is good or bad, that wasn’t the OP’s point. What he/she’s saying is that a screenwriter as accomplished as Lawrence Kasdan has absolutely NO need whatsoever to base the script on the works of authors that aren’t nearly as talented as he is. And that makes all the sense in the world.

Furthermore, all EU authors have been tied up by restrictions of some kind (whether Lucas didn’t want them exploring certain things or them having to follow a certain path to fit the overall arc of the series, continuity, etc.). By shoving the EU aside, Kasdan has a luxury that no one other than Lucas has had: a blank canvas all for himself. And, speaking from experience, I know no artist would prefer a canvas that’s already been painted, over a brand-new canvas that allows you to use all of your imagination and let it fly.

Seldom discussed is the serious politics going on behind the scenes with these actors and their agents. Used to be, if an actor were offered a role (especially a Star Wars role) they would be grateful and take the opportunity….not make bluff excuses like ‘scheduling conflicts with other projects.’ Now, you’ve got agents acting almost as lawyers, striving to get the most buck out of their clients. This is especially prevalent with so called ‘hot’ actors (exemplified by people like Lupita.) This is also why casting is increasingly coming down to the wire so close to shooting. It’s pretty sad actually.

I doubt very much that casting has come down to the wire regarding any of the cast. I think once Disney have decided who they definitely want, it’s all over bar the silence!

From what I read, Isaac was signed only three weeks ago. That sounds like coming down to the wire to me. You’re telling me that he had some theater commitment that would’ve forced him to reject SW7. Puh lease. Doing theater would not do shit for his career. SW7 could potentially make him an icon. Depends on the script. If he is another Eric Bana or Clive Owen, then he will fizzle out. We will see.

I don’t see why, except for this rumor saying they would reuse UE characters with a different name, which has been denied twice, the latter one being last week… IMO it would be very akward and confusing to tell something too similar with the “Legend” UE.

    • May 1, 2014 at 2:14 pm

They probably would not copy paste most of the EU characters. Maybe some of the characteristics but definitely not a copy paste with a new name.

I read to many comments on the site from people whom expect a return from Mara Jade and other EU characters abut with other names. I find that highly unlikely.

That is something they probably won’t do with the films. I personally hope not. I don’t mind if they use some stuff from the EU but fans who say that they will use characters like Mara jade and the solo twins are hoping for to much I think.

    • May 1, 2014 at 2:18 pm

Not sure if this is the “denial” that you’re referring to but I don’t read it that way. Just seems intentionally vague at this point :

“In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also PRESERVE AN ELEMENT OF SURPRISE AND AND DISCOVERY for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX WILL NOT TELL THE SAME STORY told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe. While the universe that readers knew IS CHANGING, IT’S NOT BEING DISCARDED. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have FULL ACCESS to the rich content of the Expanded Universe.”

    • May 1, 2014 at 2:31 pm

For me it IS some kind of proof, because how can you pretend to be surprising and creative when you take back the same character templates and personnality from the UE ? (which I think were quite unimaginative too).
If they go with a similar family-structure by having Solo kids, it may end up with some ressemblance but I don’t believe they would do it intentionnaly. Especially since they start from a Lucas script who never took interest in the UE…

You’re right Rocket, until we see the movie or at least know the parts everything still relies on speculation.

ardon the expression, buts it’s becoming increasingly difficult to surprise an audience these days when we’re constantly up the a§$ of a movie from casting to score.

Take it from someone who’s been there. By the time the proof movies had arrived, I’d read the articles, seen every set leak, followed every rumor, you name it. When the Rome came to sit down and watch the film, I was a depleted mess. I had already projected my own assumptions into the movie.

This is why I’m working on The SW Pledge, a blog where fans can sign up and pledge to abstain from any news leading up to the film. There are two modes of pledge.

Clean – Official news only, including trailers.
Hard – Zero news until release.

The pledge is complete with a progress meter ans accountability partners.

This is similar to other sites out there with similar pledges ranging from gaming to pornography addiction. The parallels are obvious though.

I definitely see Ridley as the daughter of Han and Leia much in the Spirit of the EU’s Jaina Solo. I think that Boyega and Oscar will be the two other leads: Boyega being a fellow Jedi student and lifelong friend of Ridley’s character and Isaac as a Han Solo esque mercenary or ex-military type that butts heads with Boyega’s character and eventually may become a love interest for Ridley. I don’t see Isaac as Han and Leia’s son. His Guatemalan and Cuban descent make him an odd choice for a biological son of two caucasion people. I think it is quite possible that the two male children (Jacen and Anakin Solo) from the EU will be disregarded completely, as well as the son (Ben) and wife (Mara Jade) of Luke Skywalker, focusing on Ridley’s character to pass on the Skywalker genes. I think the speculation about Gleeson being the grandson of Obi-Wan is interesting as the movies gave no indication of Obi-Wan having any interactions with women. The Clone Wars (which is canon) did hint at a romantic past relationship and revealed current strong feelings between Obi-Wan and the Mandalorian Dutchess Satine. It’s possible that she conceived his child and kept the child from him. We also don’t know much about Obi-Wan’s life on Tatooine between EpIII & EpIV. In time, we will see if this rumor is true. It would be a neat thing if Gleeson was Obi-Wan’s grandson and was apprenticed to Luke Skywalker. It would bring the Kenobi / Skywalker relationship in full circle and give some resolution to past mistakes and wrongs. I personally would love to see that. But they’ll have to make us buy in to the possibility that Obi-Wan had offspring first. We’ll see…

Good thoughts here. My impression in watching TCW was that Obi Wan and Satine never physically consummated their relationship, but that the storyline was perhaps designed partly to justify Obi Wan having had a relationship between the trilogies.

After all, he did tell Luke, “I was once a Jedi knight…” Which could easily be interpreted to mean that he had stopped considering himself a Jedi knight once he went into hiding. And he’d obviously been into Mos Eisley before, so…

This is some of the best speculation I’ve read so far.

I agree with almost everything, except for the Gleeson as Obi-Wan’s grandson part. Doesn’t mean his character couldn’t be related to old Ben, though. He could be his grand nephew or something along those lines, which could work just as well for this purpose, IMO.

I’m sorry, but I’ve always thought of Obi-Wan as the “perfect” Jedi from the prequel era, meaning that I can’t picture him breaking the Jedi Code, just to have a little, secret affair. He was way too uptight and square for that. Then again, that’s just my opinion, and I admit that I’d love to be surprised by the new films, as opposed to going to see what everybody and their neighbor seem to be expecting already.

Issac – I could see him as the military guy, maybe a Mandalorian or Ridley’s love interest.
Serkis – An alien of somesort if doing motion capture or maybe another Jedi or possibly even a Sith.
Gleeson – Has to be Skywalker’s son.
    Riley – Solo daughter.
Sydow – New Sith Lord or possibly a Jedi from the Clone Wars era.

That was my initial reaction when I read speculation yesterday that von Sydow could be Obi Wan’s brother, Dopeyjoe. Then I started thinking a bit more about it.

One thing sticks out in my mind. When Timothy Zahn first wrote Heir of the Empire, the Jedi clone character was actually a clone of Obi Wan that had gone mad. It was, as I understand it, one of the only things that Lucas made Zahn change. My recollection from reading about this change years ago was that the objection was that Obi Wan’s character was to be off-limits in the post-ROTJ books.

It’s possible that, in addition to not wanting to conflict with the eventual PT character, Lucas may have also had something in mind as far as his sequel trilogy notes went. A long-lost brother of Obi Wan’s, the one who wasn’t chosen by the Jedi, could certainly fit in with that.

Again, I doubt that this is what von Sydow’s character is. BUT… consider a scenario where Obi Wan’s brother grows up knowing that the Jedi didn’t want him, but he does have some rudimentary Force sensitivity – just not enough to impress the Jedi. But it IS enough for him to eventually tap into the dark side.

So, he’s been on the other side of the galaxy somewhere, probably ruling over some indigenous population like a Sith version of Col. Kurtz. Then when he realizes that the Jedi are coming back, he’s just gotta fuck with ’em.

It could work.I don’t think this is the way they’re going to go with the story, of course, but it could theoretically work as a story concept.

Okay, here’s my instincts about who’s playing what.

Daisy Ridley – Almost definitely Han and Leia’s daughter. It’s very possible that she could be the “Luke” of the new trilogy.

Adam Driver – It’s all but been confirmed that he will be the “Vader” of the new trilogy. Personally, I don’t think he’s going to be a Skywalker. His look is all wrong for that. He could, however, be a Jedi apprentice who has gone bad (or goes bad during the first movie) in something that reflects the way Obi Wan originally described Darth Vader in ANH, back when he hadn’t yet been turned into Luke’s father. Either way, a baddie for sure.

John Boyega – a Jedi knight through and through. My assumption is that 30 years down the line, Luke has established some sort of Jedi training system, and Boyega’s character will probably end up being one of his star pupils, alongside young Miss Solo.

Oscar Isaac – I have no idea what to make of him at this point. He seems to be about the same age as Han was in ANH, compared to Luke and Leia. So my gut says he could be a non-Jedi hero of some kind. I assume they won’t make all of the young leads Force-users, after all. They need at least one more worldly lead character to keep the cast grounded (which was one area where the PT failed.)

The one thing that occurs to me about Isaac, though, is that in the photo at the top of this post, he does have a look to his face that is somewhat reminiscent of Luke and Anakin. I doubt that he is Luke’s son, but if that did happen to be how it turned out, I wouldn’t be completely surprised.

As others mention, though, Isaac would also make a great villain. At this point I think he’s the wild card of the cast.

Domnhall Gleeson – I think he’s probably a Jedi apprentice. Whether he’s a Skywalker (or a Kenobi?) or somebody unrelated to the original characters, my money says he’s going to be swinging a saber.

Andy Serkis – while I’d love to see him in a live-action role, I have a feeling that he was probably chosen due to his abilities as a motion-capture performer. As long as it isn’t another slapstick trainwreck like Jar Jar, I think he’ll probably end up doing something pretty cool.

Max von Sydow – he’s GOT to be a villain! Another poster had come up with a theory that perhaps he could be a long-lost brother of Obi Wan, which I think could actually work if done right (e.g., he was the brother who DIDN’T get chosen by the Jedi, and ended up later developing what Force sensitivity he did have through the easier path of the dark side.) I would expect, though, that he is probably Adam Driver’s dark-side master and no relation to anyone from the original trilogy. But come on… von Sydow in Star Wars? How can he not be a villain? ;^)

“But come on… von Sydow in Star Wars? How can he not be a villain?”

Sir Alec Guiness was in Star Wars, he wasn’t a villain. Samuel L. Jackson was in Star Wars, he wasn’t a villain. Terrence Stamp was in Star Wars, he wasn’t a villain.

SW doesn’t need another Palpatine or Dooku; too predictable. I’m almost certain that von Sydow’s character will be a mysterious, enigmatic dinosaur from the age of the Old Republic holding information that will be vital to Luke (and his new Jedi) in some way or another; perhaps even an old Jedi who managed to survive Order 66, living in exile somewhere in the Outer Rim, whom Luke has to find.

    • May 1, 2014 at 5:11 pm

I think it’d be pretty cool to see Von Sydow as either a protagonist or antagonist. Personally, I’d like to see the sith forces re-emerge as a new threat with a master and apprentice rather than having the villain just figure out the dark side on his own. He’s gotta have someone there providing the temptation of evil.
I feel as though a lot of these actors and actresses will be playing roles none of us are expecting and that really excites me!

    • May 1, 2014 at 5:13 pm
      Permalink

I think most of us feel that von Sydow is headed for villainhood. Very likely he is the Corrupter of Driver’s character, and his master.

It was I who suggested that his character might turn out to be Obi-Wan’s brother. Perhaps he was rejected in childhood (“too much anger in this one”, or whatever), and came to hate the Jedi Order that had taken his brother from him while turning himself away. So as he matured, he set out to develop his talents on his own. Maybe he uncovered some store of ancient lore, a Sith holocron or whatever, that let him delve into the Dark Side independent of the established Sith line.

He could not actually become a Sith because of the Rule of Two, and both places were taken by Sidious and his successive apprentices (Maul, Tyranus, Vader). But with the fall of the Empire and the end of the Sith line, the ecological niche for a new Dark Lord was left vacant, and von Sydow’s chraracter has spent three decades rising towards the top. Does he pull a “Palpatine” by maintaining a kind and gentle public persona, while worming ever closer to power?

Likely Leia is a central figure in galactic government at this point, and he may try to eliminate her to take her place. Could she be heroically rescued by Han, perhaps at the cost of his own life?

If the character appears kind and gentle at first, Luke might also initially trust him and reflect on the fact that “you so remind me of my first mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You even look a lot like him.” Later, when the character is revealed as 1) a Dark Lord and 2) the brother of Kenobi, he would mock Luke for failing to connect the dots earlier.

He would resent the Jedi and oppose Luke’s attempts to reestablish the order. Just possibly, his own mission is to reestablish he Sith line that was broken when Vader turned on Sidious and both perished. If so, we have two “competing” re-establishment projects going on in the Sequel Trilogy. Luke would be fiercely determined that his father’s great sacrifice should not be for nothing; the Sith must not be allowed to rise again!

Then again, maybe this new Dark Lord is unrelated to the Sith, regarding them only as “competitors” that were conventiently swept away when the Rebellion succeeded — thank you very much.

Is this character going to be the new “Palpatine” for the entire trilogy, or will he be killed off in the first movie? If so, his apprentice Darth Driver (or whatever) will survive to become the Big Bad for the next two movies, hell-set on avenging his master. Practical considerations may enter in: no one can be sure that 85-year-old von Sydow will be available for the entire new trilogy, if production spans more than half a decade. So perhaps von Sydow will be in Episode VII only. If he is still able to do VII and IX, we may finally get to see an “evil” Force-ghost.

That’s very possible. He could certainly be an exiled Jedi.

But that voice and that presence would lend themselves perfectly to a villain role. I seriously doubt that Adam Driver is going to be badding it up on his own, and von Sydow would be a perfect one to balance Driver out with age, experience and good old gravitas.

So what if they already went with an older villain in Dooku? They’ve also gone with young, good-looking heroes over and over again too. Some things just consistently work in these kinds of stories, and the evil old wizard is one of them.

But again, he could certainly make a decent good guy too. Absolutely.

It really doesn’t have to be cheap or lame unless you predict it to be. They could use that theme to start for something completely new.
And yes, the Sith have always been about master/apprentice, much differently than the Jedi. In episode 1 Yoda and Mace are discussing Maul’s defeat at Qui-gon’s funeral, “Always two there are, no more no less.” to which Mace replies, “but which was defeated, the master or the apprentice?” A rough quote on my part but that conversation is held between those two characters in episode one. Therefore, the Sith have been about the mentor-apprentice archetypes.

      dopeyjoe,

In the words of Sidious himself, the Sith and the Jedi are very similar in most ways. That doesn’t mean we’ve seen the Sith master/apprentice dynamics play out onscreen, though. At least, never to the extent that we’ve seen it with the Jedi (Obi-Wan/Luke, Yoda/Luke, Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan/Anakin). So my point was that Sith apprenticeship has never been a central plot point in the saga.

Rehashing the whole Sith resurgence thing would be cheap and lame, any which way you wish to look at it. The Emperor is dead, and gone with him are all of the secrets of Sith occult knowledge and his apprentice, of course.

To think that someone could master all of the Sith secrets on their own, to the point where it would take them just 30 yrs. to become a serious threat (when it took perfectly trained Sith Lords a millenium to do just that before them) is pushing the boundaries of suspension of disbelief, even if there aren’t as many Jedi around this time to stop the Sith, like there was in the prequel era.

Wouldn’t it be much better to have von Sydow play a rogue Jedi, who survived Order 66, and who’s spent the last 50 yrs. building a cult-like following, made of fanatical Jedi, bent on dominating the galaxy for the “good of all”, motivated by 50/60 yrs. of continuous civil war ravaging the whole place?

Or, something along those lines, for instance?

My point is that truly creative people can find ways to come up with new, original ideas that will be a thousand times better than rehashing an old idea. You can only go to the well so many times, after all.

Then again, the Jedi-Sith conflict has always been at the heart of SW, and so you could be right and I could be totally mistaken. I just hope that if they do bring the Sith back (again!) they do it in a way that doesn’t feel cheap and lame, just as you’d like to believe.

“So my point was that Sith apprenticeship has never been a central plot point in the saga.”

Why would they bother making a point of it throughout the films if this were the case?

“The Emperor is dead, and gone with him are all of the secrets of Sith occult knowledge and his apprentice, of course.”

Luke still exists, and he has a rather extensive knowledge of the darkside, doesn’t he? That knowledge could be passed through to his students in this next episode, for all we know. Especially if the plot goes the route you’ve mentioned and Von Sydow portrays an older Jedi that somehow survived order 66 and was never mentioned throughout either trilogy.

I’m just playing devil’s advocate. I too would like to see something different from this next trilogy and I agree with you that it’d be much more of a creative route for the EpVII team to take, but like you said; Jedi vs Sith, Good vs Evil have been themes carried throughout both trilogies. They could certainly bring those themes back with the Sith in an interesting way. We cannot let ourselves jump to conclusions without knowing any details about the plot. All of this is strictly speculation.

What if they flip the EU timeline and have the new threat be the rise of the “Dark Jedi”? I could even see Luke as the master in that scenario given the fact that he actually used the dark side (his hate and anger) against Vader, but ultimately eschewed it at the end. Maybe he thinks he can control both sides of the Force, but end up being mistaken.

“Why would they bother making a point of it throughout the films if this were the case?”

Lucas made a point of showing us how the Sith passed on their knowledge to their learners, but he never showed us the actual Sith training process. I believe this was by design. By keeping them shrouded behind a veil of mystery, the audience never learned the secrets of the Sith. We had to imagine all of it, which is very interesting, IMO.

Now, maybe that’s what will be revealed in this new trilogy. But for that, you’d need a true Sith Master, and I believe Palpatine/Sidious was the last one. I seriously doubt there will be another one, just as powerful, as cunning and as wise as him.

“Luke still exists, and he has a rather extensive knowledge of the darkside, doesn’t he?”

Not anymore than you or I, would be my guess. Think about it; all that Luke learned was bits and pieces here, revealed by Yoda for the most part. And like all of the Jedi of his time, Yoda used to avoid the dark side like the plague. Vader and the Emperor didn’t really reveal that much to him in the end.

There’s always the possibility that the Emperor had a secret apprentice, just in case. But again, I feel like that would be an easy cop out and a cheap plot device. Besides, I don’t think he would’ve been so keen in turning Luke, had he kept an ace up his sleeve to replace Vader.

That’s why I think going with a rogue Jedi (or more), motivated by a twisted perception of “keeping peace and justice in the galaxy” would be a better way to go. That way, you still have the eternal conflict of light vs. dark at play in the heart of it all, but from a different perspective.

All this is strictly speculation, of course. I agree. But it’s also a lot of fun lol. I’ve always gotten a kick out of finding out how right/wrong my predictions were in the end lol.

      @ dopejoe
Luke and Leia was not born at this point in the story. You can hear Darth Vader breathing.
And please remember at Clone Wars are canon.

I have a feeling that the story are changing. and maybe just maybe AnAkin has a brother or sister. You can’t say that it’s impossible, the story of Anakin younger years is unknown.

And remember many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.

It could make sense, I suppose. I don’t know if I’d be too happy with that route, but that’s just my opinion. It all depends on how it’s done.

It would be great to see Harrison Ford with a clutch, maybe an eye-patch. You know, that old General stuff.
I’d love to see him being old and grumpy, just as what hes actually supposed to be and makes sense.

I also would like to see John Boyega, whom I’m not too confident for a lead-role to see as a young, ambitious Empire commander.
You know whit that nazi-type uniform as the black dude in the Prequels had.
    Some red-black leather uniform.
No this is not racism at all, I really mean it.
Do not underestimate this young Empire officer, or he’ll pin your back down

looking closely at the seating arrangement in the released photo – I think it has something to say about who is who… Daisy, Ford and Fisher sit close, with Mayhew not far away. Luke, Anthony Daniels and Gleeson together, Boyega, Isaac and Driver together … could it be that the last three are all bad guys to some degree?

As cool as it would be to see some mysteries of the Sith revealed, I hope that the antagonists of the new trilogy are a little more more conventional (i.e. non-Sith). The force (both sides of it) has always played a huge and central part in the saga, but I don’t think it’s necessary to rehash the same theme over and over. I would like to see the Jedi as a little rougher around the edges and more practical in the new trilogy (versus the flambouant finesse of those in the PT- as cool as that was at times). The main villain should be an extremely ruthless and extremely capable non-force-user. For the more mysterious force-centered aspects of the film, they could show Luke undergoing further training from Yoda to learn how to maintain his identity after death and maybe even visit the force planet and face his dark side persona much like Yoda did in the final episode of TCW. It would be awesome to have a less jedi/sith-focused main plot and a really awesome sub-plot with a light/dark-centered concept.

I hope they keep it simple. Start out with a huge battle. Maybe intro Han as a major military leader. The ship is disabled and boarded like Ep. 4 and Han sends R2 and 3PO to deliver a message to Luke. Luke is brought into the fold with his new apprentice and maybe his son, maybe the solo daughter. Then it becomes a rescue mission to save Han. It would be nice to incorporate a little old EU element here and have Han meet a young man sensitive to the force. ala Kyp Durron. They all escape and go to the Alliance base/homeworld. There they can reveal the current state of affairs. Empire is back and unstoppable. A major Imperial leader (like Tarkin or Thrawn) is devastating the Alliance forces and Luke or someone like him can say that the dark side is on the rise. Then the end battle is unlike anything we have seen to make everyone remember that this is star WARS. Leave the puppet master etc for another film. The Emperor was not introduced until the second film, why do we need to see the true master in Ep 7? A New Hope was great for its overall simplicity, yet there were so many over and undertones that allowed Empire and Jedi to expand on those ideas and reveal that there is much more going on in the Star Wars universe. All we need to know is Stormtrooper’s, Imperial Officers, Star Destroyers, and Tie Fighters are bad. We dont need the history of the Sith revealed. In fact I would prefer to see the Mandalorian’s come into the mix and become antagonists to everyone; it worked well in the Clone Wars cartoon. There are smart ways to create a real threat to the Jedi and various other character without relying on an antagonist that can use the force. I wouldn’t mind seeing a new Sith character but there are so many other cool options.

I agree whole-heartedly…Mandalorians would be cool indeed…I think they should have some element of the Sith in the trilogy, but maybe wait until the episode 8 to hint at the resurgence of the Sith and delve more into it in episode 9. Abrams is likely to throw some crazy plot twists in there like he did in Lost (which is one of my favorite shows ever). Like for instance the final film is heading for an all out war between the Jedi and the Sith/Dark Jedi only to realize that there is a greater threat that has remained hidden up to this point and they may have to band together to defeat it. Not that I forsee that scenario playing out, but I expect some twists and turns with Abrams. I just hope, unlike Lost (as much as I enjoyed the show), we will not be sitting their after the end of Ep. 9 saying…”Ok…what was that?” And spend the rest of our lives trying to figure out what the last decade in Star Wars was really all about. But Abrams does great storytelling and I expect it to be really amazing.

Driver = Playing a Padawan who falls to the dark side
    Boyega = Padawan
Serkis = Alien Jedi Master and Luke’s first Padawan
Isaac = [Jacen] Solo and Padawan
Gleeson = rumored to be Obi-wan’s grandson but I still think will be Luke’s son

Hmm…Serkis has already played the role of a key villain (if not the big baddie) as Gollum, of course. And needless to say, he was excellent; especially that deranged look in his eye as Sméagol when he found the Ring.

So yeah, I could see him as some sort of villain in SW, sure. Maybe not the main bad guy, but in some villainous role, at least.

cgi characters look good now. I mean if this film was around 5 years ago then I’d hate the idea of a cg character, but golum in the hobbit for example looked 100% photorealistic.

lol! I was talking about Serkis as Sméagol in the opening sequence of TRotK. You know, no gimmicks, except for makeup and a wig. I really thought his performance was brilliant; especially those crazy eyes of his when he battles and kills his cousin Déagol over his “preciousss”…

Just because they’re using mo-cap doesn’t immediatly indicate that it’s gonna be another Jar Jar. I’m sure JJ hated him as much as the rest of us when TPM came out. Serkis is an incredible actor and I think he could bring some awesome things to the table with his talent.

Anyone notice that Adam Driver and Max Von Sydow both have very striking looks in that they both have a very long face? 99% sure it’s just a coincidence, but their characters could be related.

I think Boyega has enough facial features to pull off a reletive or offspring of Lando and seeing as how Billy Dee won’t be in this film (or so we think as of now), it could be that Boyega’s character was left alone after the death of his only reletive or father as a very young child, when Luke decided to gain a better understanding of his own capabilities by training this young one in the Jedi way, along with the daughter of his sister (Ridley). As their training progresses and more opportunities to train young ones are presented, Luke decides that the force is guiding him to establish a new order of Jedi to restore a status-quo balance to the galaxy and govern that balance as the Jedi once did. When EpVII picks up, one of Luke’s students (Driver) is persuaded by the long-lost brother of Kenobi (Von Sydow) that Luke’s guidance in the Jedi teachings of old will only lead the galaxy to utter turmoil as it did decades before when the Empire first rose. Von Sydow’s character convinces Driver to begin following his way (essentially the dark jedi) which leads to Von Sydow and Driver to being the antagonists of the trilogy.
I’m still not sure where Gleeson, Serkis and Isaac fall into place, but this is simply a speculation. It seems to make a good amount of sense. I can’t wait until a general plot summary is revealed 🙂
