Game of Thrones Series Creators to Write and Produce New Series of Star Wars Films

The duo responsible for bringing you Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are bringing their talents to Lucasfilm, to write and produce another new series of Star Wars films!

In a post just released on StarWars.com, the Emmy award winning series creators were announced to be developing yet another series of films in the Star Wars franchise!

The duo most known for their work transforming George R. R. Martin’s book series into arguably one of the greatest television series of all time are now entering the Star Wars universe. The films will not be connected to the Skywalker saga, nor the previously announced trilogy coming from The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson.

Benioff and Weiss released a joint statement regarding their new exciting venture:

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

In speaking about the duo, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said:

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

A question some fans may be asking is, what else are they known for? In addition to Game of Thrones Benioff is known for writing the novel The 25th Hour, and the script for the movie of the same name. He also wrote the films Brothers, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Troy, and The Kite Runner. Weiss’ resume doesn’t have as many credentials, however in addition to writing Game of Thrones, he is responsible for also producing and directing for the series.

There is no doubt fans constantly begging for a Knights of the Old Republic film or television series will immediately point to that being the reason Weiss and Benioff were brought in, but that remains to be seen as no other details have been made available. We will keep you updated as more information on this news is revealed.

It was a smart move on StarWars.com’s part to bring up Rian Johnson’s trilogy, to avoid the spark of any unnecessary rumors that this may be a shift from his project. Quite the contrary, as this is in addition, and separate from Johnson’s films, spreading the Star Wars galaxy even further into the galaxy far, far away.

That’s nice I guess, but I had noticed the quality of writing in GoT had diminished somewhat once they’d moved beyond what GRR Martin has already published.

Agreed – GoT feels as though its rushing towards it final. I think they could of used/come-up with some more material to have 10 episodes last season and I have no issue with them having a break to keep the quality up.

Still – fresh new talent coming in, so that’s a plus.

So are the “stand alone” films now over with Solo? It seems with Rian’s Trilogy about kids with brooms and the Game of Thrones Guys’ Trilogy, how will there be room for any Stand-alones? I am waiting with baited breath to watch Rian’s trilogy fail miserably without the draw of the OT characters.

Old Republic would be amazing!!! I am quite optimistic about this announcement as long as ‘pushing the limits’ doesn’t mean doing what RJ did with TLJ. I have faith in this writer duo. At least they can bounce ideas off each other. The mistake they made with TLJ is to have only one writer and that writer be also the director.

Oh yeah… but don’t forget the other most important recent announcement, after this latest new trilogy news, was that yet another white dude (Rian) was in charge of that trilogy.

Methinks her pandering isn’t very well thought out.

So do you feel threatened by women in power? Assigning female gender to something you’ve thought of as male/masculine?

I really don’t get the insecurities.
            What’s wrong w/that picture?
Women traditionally marginalized in so many ways, feeling empowered & using feminine gender as a term of pride – that really bothers you?

Kathleen & Disney want SW to expand. They want to attract female audience members.
            This shouldn’t bother/alienate well-adjusted & mature fans.

So many straight/white/male SW fans upset by female representation in the movies/promoted at Lucasfilm. I don’t get it.

So SJW-pander if she does & SJW-panderer if she doesn’t.

Having strong female leads in Rey & Jyn, as well as *gasp* a black Stormtrooper, sure seem to have an insecure white male audience upset w/this modern+mature approach to casting/characters.

Are you aware, that no one cares if there’s a black stormtrooper, except for race obsessed SJW dimwits who want to wag their finger at everyone over it?

You joke about that. LOL, but I could honestly see something like that. Heck, a part of me wished that LF would release something like that. Whether it be in comic or game form, what ifs for SWs. Legends had this with the SWs Infinity comics.

And while not canon to the EU, some of the stories were fantastic. Like for example, if Luke failed to stop the Death Star or if Luke died on Hoth and Leia was to be trained by Yoda?

Stuff like that I think would honestly go a long way in making the brand really fresh. Because, it is keeping the OT aesthetic, much as I have grown tired of it, but also putting a cool spin on it.

Game of Thrones is great but surely the real story telling genius is George Martin. Of course these guys have taken the original story further and diverged from it but the original style and critical elements come from the original. Nevertheless these guys do make great entertainment.

Not sure that two separate series are needed. TLJ was already dabbling on a Game of Thrones style. If they really want such a style and these guys are on board then the necessity of Rian Johnson is not so clear to me.

Lastly what I like about Game of Throne is the efficiency and effortless way the characters move through the story. In Star Wars since PT era I feel they are always forcibly pushing characters through the story to reach their destination. My hope would be that Game of Thrones influence could change this also as opposed to just unexpected twists.

Just because Game of Thrones has to do with midevil stuff doesn’t automatically mean that KOTOR is happening. Exciting news sure, but expectations as we have seen with TLJ are very dangerous.

TLJ? Not particularly. Out of all 9 movies it’s probably 6th on my list. But my commentary was on the fandom really, that everyone had these expectations about what was supposed to happen in TLJ that when it didn’t, it divided the fandom. Star Wars is better when we are united not divided.

Ewan McGregor was really good in movies like Shallow Grave and Trainspotting. He’s not given enough to work with Obi-Wan. Like you say, his purpose was to serve the mentor role for the heroes journey for both Anakin and Luke. There’s no real character arc for him, as he’s vanilla as always in Episode IV.

Personally, I found the character entertaining and I think there’s a lot of emotional room for a story to be told (feeling like he let down Anakin, feeling responsible for Luke, feeling like he let down the Jedi and the galaxy as a whole). These feelings could all lead to him making decisions which make a good story. With the right director/writer I think it could be pretty good.

But hey, that’s just me 🙂

No story there. Obi Wan’s in a box on Tatooine. He’s laying low, keeping watch on Luke. He does such a good job of this that the Empire assumes he’s dead by ANH. If Obi Wan engages in some grand adventure/mission/conflict (of what would be interesting enough to make an entire film about) then he easily blows his cover or endangers Luke by attracting attention to himself or having others expose his whereabouts to the Empire. Plus, we just had a movie about an exiled aging Jedi in solitude following a tragedy.

Well obviously if he has an adventure, he doesn’t blow his cover because the Empire hadn’t heard of it 😉 I get what you’re saying though.

Most interesting. I will be honest; I have never watched GOT. I tired reading the first book and hated it. Though, I’m tempted because Sean Bean is in the first season and he’s one of my favorite actors.

But overall, I’m cautiously optimistic. Call me a bit jaded, but after TLJ; I’m really skeptical when it comes to SWs movies. That isn’t a slight on those who love TLJ. But for me; I cannot see myself getting too excited.

That said, separating my dislusionment, I can see these guys doing some cool work. For example, suppose they did an origin movie on the Jedi and Sith?

I could see it something being akin to GOT. A galaxy in its infancy with archaic technology. The first Force users discovering their powers, perhaps with the Bendu.

Heck, take inspiration from the Dawn of the Jedi comic and let us see the formation of the Jedi, Sith and Lightsabers and maybe see the Caretakers in full display.

Because, really; I want SWs to move past the OT aesthetic. And just do something new rather than just rhyming differently. But that’s just me.

I’m just wondering how will they (Lucasfilm) be able to maintain an overall Star Wars feeling in all these movies they have planned, without Jedi and without Skywalkers. I’m pretty sure at one point or another it will all feel as generic SciFi. As much as I’d like to see more movies, with the multiple Tv shows and this myriad of films, it will come to that. Gold, diamonds, and even truffles are all valuable because one thing: They are scarce.

Everyone in the entertainment and geek news needs to slow down here. The reality is that Benioff and Weiss, like Rian Johnson and his producing partner, are getting the chance to write synopses/proposals for a new series of movies. They get contracted to write them, pitch them, and paid. If Lucasfilm and Disney don’t like what either team comes up with, they’re under no obligation to move forward. So B&W are getting paid to come up with a series of SW films, too.

At first I thought Benioff and Weiss would be producing a live-action SW series.

Lucasfilm ought to do one more Star Wars Story movie, and make it connect with Solo and Rogue One, so they can say these three movies comprise a trilogy of sorts. For example, do the Obi Wan story, his main adversary is Boba Fett. Set it on Tatooine. Give all the fan service: Action sequence set among bantha stampede, Sandcrawlers, Jabba and his gang, a living Krayt dragon, the rancor gets delivered to Jabba, etc.. How to connect it to Rogue One and Solo? Have Chirrut show up — he knows Ob-Wan already, and he assists Kenobi in the big fight climax. Throw in Thandie Newton, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson or another character from Solo. There you go. You could watch this in reverse order, going from Obi-Wan, Solo, and Rogue One. Together, these three movies would serve as a trilogy between PT and OT.

The fact that you point to box office figures as a metric for how good a film is, is just beyond laughable. By that logic are the Transformers films masterpieces too? If you want numbers, look at anywhere on the internet where actual fans and normal people (not media shills) are reviewing the film. Better yet, ask them yourself. I haven’t met a single person who hasn’t had enormous problems with the film. You need to get out of the bubble.

Do you even read? I didn’t say anything about the quality of the film. I spoke only to the audience satisfaction. Which, judging by the amount of repeat viewings that are necessary to get to $1.3B, is pretty high.

I’ll keep waiting on those cold hard stats you’re sitting on. And no, reading comments online by the people you arbitrarily decide are the “real” fans isn’t evidence of how people generally feel about a movie. I feel for you if you think what you read through social media is a true reflection of reality. Perhaps that’s why you’re so lost on this topic.

          • February 7, 2018 at 8:53 pm
            Permalink

You didn’t – and still don’t – say anything about audience satisfaction, because you refuse to believe anything other than what just makes you feel better about the film yourself. Of course it has a huge box office – it comes off the back of a huge amount of goodwill from Ep7 and Rogue One – both solid films. You choose not to believe any online user reviews of the film, so what’s the point of me telling you what % of the audience reviews say it’s garbage? About 50% of people online say the film is garbage, and that also mirrors the opinions of people I’ve spoken to in real life.

If all the people who hated/disliked/were disappointed with the film could go back in time and NOT bother seeing it, that $1.3 billion you love quoting, just falls away.

Dang! For real? 50% of online comments you read and 50% of people you talk to? That’s is some solid data , I mean pointless anecdote.

I know whenever I need factual information I quiz my friends first, then I look on internet discussion boards until I corroborate what I already believe to be true, then I look at online polls and only quote the one’s that support my opinion because as we all know they are like totally accurate.

It’s a better movie than it’s generally given credit for and it was received better during it’s initial release than most people care to remember. TPM’s box office illustrates how much anticipation and hype drives the box office of the first movie in a new Star Wars trilogy. The second movie in a Star Wars trilogy has always had a double digit drop off from the first. Does that indicate that people didn’t like The Empire Strikes back?

The fact that The Last Jedi lands at number 9 on the all time box office list is an indication of the positive audience reaction to the film. It gets some boost coming off of The Force Awakens but it doesn’t cross $1B without also being a movie that people like.

You can always point to what you think is a shit movie with large box office totals and say that proves that box office isn’t an indication of quality. i.e. Transformers and Fast and Furious but the fact is that people do like those movies. I think those people have horrible taste but the movies are successful because they satisfied their audience. When you stop thinking that social media reflects reality you realize that The Last Jedi satisfied it’s audience.

Those are valid points. However, Weiss and Benioff have written several of the episodes for GoT, and although they had Martins novels to guide them, they translated his story into something watchable wonderfully. I’m rather optimistic that the pair will be able to do the same thing with the universe created by George Lucas. I’ll freely give credit where credit is due, this seems to be a brilliant move by Kathleen Kennedy and Co.

As far as the KOTOR speculation goes, who knows what could happen? But damn, would that be a ride.

Something like the first Jedi in a medieval/ancient environment (like Ahch-to) could be cool. With ships yes 😛

I don’t like it much the GOT story (too much politics and angry people and little fantasy, even the book, i couldn’t stand the first one) but I keep watching the show because the esthetics. Love the visual part, the production, actors, sets and characterizations, and scripts at least are serious, not with cheesy dialogs.
Interesting what can provide this to guys in SW universe. Good times.

Fantastic news! GOT is my favourite tv show by far. However, just a bit worried they are over doing it with how much Star Wars we are getting. I don’t want to burn out!

If I had one piece of advice for Disney, it would be this…
Stop announcing vapourware trilogies! Instead of promising large chunks of films that are many years away, announce single projects and deliver. This is too much at once and they are running the risk of diluting the brand.

We just had the announcement of a new trilogy… Deliver on that before promising the moon.

    Just my take on this.

I just keep getting reminded of the absurd slate of films DC announced, cancelled, announced, stopped talking about, announced , pretended never existed, insisted are still TOTALLY happening… It feels like there’s no real plan other than ‘we have to make some more Star Wars” – how do all of these projects fit together? I don’t even mean in terms of a narrative universe, but just at the box office. We’ve got saga films, and individual films, and at least one, maybe two connected series of films that aren’t part of the saga, and multiple TV shows – obviously we don’t have all the information, but right now it looks like a total dogs breakfast.

I completely agree. I knew this would happen, but I assumed it would take a few more years. Now we are in the thick of it, and there is no way the train is slowing down.

It is a shame… I get it that they want to milk the space cow, but it’s frustrating to see them do it with such money-grabbing vigor. The udder will be empty before they know it, and it could be avoided if they just slowed down a bit.

You know when you are almost out of butter, and you butter your toast with a thin micro-film of butter to make it last thought breakfast?

    That’s Star Wars now …

Admittedly, I’m one of the few people on the planet who has never actually watched Game of Thrones. Though I understand it features a fair amount of ‘incest’.

So they’ll probably be right at home in this franchise. 😉

The risk is that too much Star Wars will trivialize the franchise and lead to diminishing returns over time.

If the new SW films written by the GoT team are released on the big franchise, I suggest Disney drops the RJ trilogy to avoid overcrowding.

This outcome will certainly depend on what they do and the time frame of the material…jury is out until then.

I have to agree, there was a distinct drop in quality when the series passed the books.
Whether or not it was down to these two, or the speed at which they (the producers) seem to be wrapping up the series, or even other factors? I don’t know.

I get where you’re coming from. We shouldn’t get too excited when the material for most of Game of Thrones was from the mind of Martin. But I think calling them “hacks” is a bit extreme.

So no more trilogies – Good! These guys will just make Star wars movies sort of in a way like the endless Bond Films Star Wars End of Hope, Star Wars Return of Revan

My guess they will be starting around Revans era Make a few movies about him , Kraya, Nihilus, Bastila Shan , Darth Malak. That way they have 4000 years of movies they can make

I can see this as being universally praised by the fan base because these guys have done incredible things with Game of Thrones then being dumped on by the same fan base because they make a decision that is contrary to what hey consider to be “Star Wars or that character wouldn’t do that”, even though said fan base has no creative voice in any of it from 1977 to now.

Not sure if “passing the Star Wars baton” around to whoever is hot in Hollywood at the moment is wise or not. As we learned with Rian Johnson, significant DAMAGE can be done to the Franchise when such power is handed out like candy. I think that LAWRENCE KASDAN AND SON would be a much more satisfying duo to write upcoming SW films —- why not use them as much as possible?

I think SW is in for an IDENTITY CRISIS if the baton is passed around this flippantly.

I’m curious as to why there is this push to move away from the Skywalkers. I get the argument that it’s a big galaxy and they need to expand beyond this one family. I’m just wondering if the desire to move away from the past we end up losing what we loved about Star Wars in the first place. You can call it fan service or nostalgia but there are certain aspects to a Star Wars movie that make it a Star Wars movie. Change too much of the formula and it becomes something else. I know people say that they need to grow the fanbase because the original fanbase is getting old. Whatever, my kids love Star Wars and they are 5 and 7 years old. Will they still love Star Wars though if it’s more like GOT or Looper? Just my thoughts…come tear me apart.
