Rumor: LEGO Star Wars Episode VIII Toy Line Features TIE Bombers.
Did the lack of diversity between Resistance and First Order starfighter types in The Force Awakens bug you as much as they bugged us? Well apparently, the people at Lucasfilm got the memo, and soon the First Order TIE bombers will soon make their way to the big screen in Episode VIII! Come the next “Force Friday” event, you’ll be able to pick up LEGO sets that update the design first seen in The Empire Strikes Back.
From Hound’s Tooth:
Star Wars Episode VIII will be a great mix of the old and the new. This reflects in the few character designs we’ve seen. It should be no surprise then, that an old Imperial vessel is getting updated for use by the First Order. That’s right: There will be a TIE Bomber in Episode VIII.
This information comes in the form of a leaked Lego set announcement (via StarWarsAwakens.nl). Seeing as the source has been right about Lego before with this winter’s sets, I see no reason to doubt it.
Next Force Friday, you will be able to find First Order TIE Bombers at your local Lego supplier. Force Friday Lego sets aren’t always a guarantee for a major role in the film… But the vehicle will no doubt at least be clearly visible at some point.
That last point is especially prescient, considering that the Rogue One merchandise line made a big deal out of the TIE striker, though it was only seen for a few seconds in the movie itself. Still, knowing that we’ll be seeing more ships in battle – even if they’re technically new-old ships – already gets us a little more excited about Episode VIII. Are there any recognizable ship designs that you’d like to see get sleeker updates in Episode VIII, or would you prefer that we get some new starfighters? Let us know in the comments below.
Grant has been a fan of Star Wars for as long as he can remember, having seen every movie on the big screen. When he’s not hard at work with his college studies, he keeps himself busy by reporting on all kinds of Star Wars news for SWNN and general movie news on the sister site, Movie News Net. He served as a frequent commentator on SWNN’s The Resistance Broadcast.
I’d like to see new ships with new designs and new movie ideas, not recycled ships and movies.. again
Difficult topic, if they change things so much people can complain too.
I guess they have to do a mix of old and new ideas.
I don’t remember people complaining about the design work in the prequels.
For the most part yeah, except some people complained that the designs felt too smooth and elegant compared to the OT ships.
Well at least I remember hearing a couple things on that.
People started to panic here because the leather in Darth Vader didnt shine the same, and his eyes looked red.
We actually liked the little Rehash in art TFA was.
Millenium Phalcon, X Wings, Stormtroopers, Resistance Outfits… they could have changed all that and give us totally new stuff…
But people wanted OT, not big changes like PT.
We must admit, that was one of the success of TFA…
Are you kidding? Half the fandom wouldn’t shut the fuck up about those movies not “looking/feeling like Star Wars”.
I thought that’s what rogue one did quite well. The U-wing felt very at home on screen with the X-wings. I would love to see the New Republic have newer sleeker ships then the Resistance
That’s the right mix I think. And yes, Rogue One did everything right, also the ships new & old.
The First Order is built out of the remnants of the Empire so it makes sense that they would build their forces out of old ships initially until they are able to build new, more technologically advanaced ships. Ep8 should start a transition to newer ships. They shouldn’t just update old stuff though for Ep9, most of it should be new.
With disney/lucas trying to look to similar to the OT, they left too litle room for innovation and all will result again in rehashing.
The lack of bombers or other diverse fighters made sense in the context of Episode 8 because it’s not like we saw that many different fighters in other single movies. Like how Episode 1 just had Naboo fighters and droid ships, but then later expanded into ARC-170’s, Tri-Droids, etc.
As for bombers coming in, neat. If the first order is using the twin ion engine tech and solar wings, it only makes sense that their other attack craft would do the same to cut production costs.
black body with blue-grey details, and clumsy looking Nerf cannons slapped haphazardly on the top. Boom, FO T/B level ‘expert’.
Looks like they will continue rehashing things… 🙁 so maybe this trilogy is indeed a reboot disguised as continuation. Hopefully is not.
Militarizes often use updated versions of decades-old designs. Go look at some of the fighter jets from today vs. the 1980s. Not drastically different.
That doesn’t justify the rehashing, this is Star Wars, look RO, the movie is 20 minutes from ANH, and still have new ships, not just Ties and X-wings, with the new trilogy aparently they insist in making rehash of everything (vader, stormtroopers, ties, x-wings, big superweapons, etc.) “upgradings” of all the known things. I don’t know, I don’t like it.
Rogue one had two new fighters where one was barely seen, Episode 7 had The stormie troop carrier, that large tug ship, The Meson Martinet, the quad jumper, and the resistance transport which are all new designs. I’d personally throw kylo’s command shuttle in there too, but I can see how people say it’s too lambda like.
By comparison, Episode 1 had the droid starfighters, the N-1 starfighters, the Queen’s Ship, and that republic thing that blew up in the beginning, I’d throw Maul’s ship into that iffy zone where people thought it was a little close to a curved wing tie design. But there is around the same number of things we see on screen with varying degrees of screen time for each.
That’s a solid number of new craft there. Each Star Wars movie adds a pile of ships, some more and less, but it has more than just ties and x-wings.
Im talking about the ships that have more screen time, like the droidand N1 fighters in ep 1, TFA in that sense have (again, and 30 years later) X-wings, Tie fighters, and Millenium falcon. the others you mention have minimum screen time.
Is not about the number, but the risk to have new stuff being the main focus.
RO didnt need to add more because it is in the same era but it did, it was plus, and a good one.
This is true they did put a lot of spotlight on the older designs, but I will give them the credit that a lot of new things were designed too
We have exactly one movie to judge for the new trilogy, why don’t you cool your jets until you have another data point? TFA had a very specific goal- revitalize the Star Wars franchise for mass audiences. That unfortunately translated to utilizing plot points and designs from the original trilogy. With the success of the first film, Rian certainly is capable of taking more risks. Whether he will remains to be seen, but I’m not predisposed to thinking Episode 8 will be another clone of the original trilogy.
I´m really hoping Rian that is taking risks, but some of what we have seen yet, shows that they are still in the way of reusing stuff instead of creating. Still we have to wait.
I read the short story of Poe and it stated that he flew in the T85 Xwing for the New Republic but the older T70 for the Resistance. I hope they bring out the T75, T80 and T85 for Ep8 and 9. I did not like the wings on the T70.
I hope they give us updated TIE Interceptors.
They need a fresh approach to the vehicles/planets/designs this time around because Ep. VII was largely devoid of new ideas.
that’s because JJ did not even try to make anything unique. He wanted a complete copy of 7 because he is the most un creative director in Hollywood.
So are we never going to get any NEW ships?

That last one is just a refitted B wing 😛
B-wings are starfighters, not transport craft. They have folding, crisscrossing wings that can swivel from the cockpit.
It’s cobbled together from parts including the cockpit of a B Wing http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Resistance_transport
Cross fingers, I hope they bring new original ships, they did it with background vehicles (and with that ugly Kylo’s shuttle), but I would like to see that with the main ships like the fighters.
They already show a A-wing, so we know another familiar ship wil be back maybe “upgraded”.

I really hope this new movie to be amazing and really new, I don’t care if they have recyled ships but only if they bring at least the same amount of new ones to compensate.
Yes, Kylo’s ship and Krennic’s shuttle in R1. I have a feeling the A-Wing for Ep8 will be quite similar to that of earlier Ralph Mcqaurrie’s design which I like.
I believe Krennic’s design interesting, but I think kylo’s shuttle is ugly as hell, I like almost avery SW ship design, but I want to get surprised again with new fighters or ships in general, like in every new star wars movie, excepting TFA. They need to get loose a little more, BB8 was fresh and fun, I think they must do the same with the ships.
Yes, I really hope so too because I felt that they forgot SW eye candies are also the beautifully designed space ships and not just the settings alone. In the book, Before The Awakening. The story of Poe has him piloting a T-85 for the New Republic while the T-70 is considered an older ship used by the Resistance. I really hope to see the T-75, T80 and T-85 in the new movies and with R1 giving us the most epic space battle ever seen. I hope they try to match that in Ep8 and 9…, with a lot of pretty new ships!
I would love to see a updated version of imperial Walker’s. New AT-AT AT-ST
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Base_defense_walker
Yea I saw those but never got used. I wanna see black at at and at st
TESB cloning for Ep. 8 confirmed.
Given the huge success of BB-8 I hope they’re a bit more daring with new ship designs this time round. They’re not going to create anything iconic by just updating the old stuff.
I want to see Luke pilot one of those old yellow Naboo starfighters.
I just hope Rian would do justice to Ep8.
I will go straight to the point. The design team for the prequels are now handling design duties for all the new movies. The designs seen in the prequels are mostly ugly as fuck (UAF).
Look at the new ship designs in Ep7. Quadjumper, Resistance transporter, Kylo Shuttle, Han’s cargo ship. Those are seriously UAF designs! They have a new Star Destroyer, a new Death Star but they can’t have an entirely new TIE variant.
I think Disney should just replace the present design team with designers for the KOTOR/TOR games, those guys know how to design SW and would make Ralph Mcqaurrie and Joe Johnston proud.
“he design team for the prequels are now handling design duties for all the new movies. The designs seen in the prequels are mostly ugly as fuck” and yet you said “I think Disney should just replace the present design team with designers for the KOTOR/TOR games” lol did you not spot the hammerhead corvette in Rogue One you blind bat? also how can you say that the ships in the prequels are ugly? So the Jedi starfighters are ugly? Arc 170 ships are ugly? Solar sailors are ugly? Padmes Naboo cruiser is ugly? you’re dumb af. You are just trying to hard to join the prequels haters aren’t you?
Name callings. LOL do you feel better now? What if I hate those designs, you dumb fuck! What you going to do about it?
You’re just mad cause I embarrassed you with the hammerhead corvette comment. You should be a little more careful when pretending to be a prequel hater in order to look hip and trendy. Do your homework before you complain like a baby.
Huh? I mad coz you called me names, dude and please learn to read! If you read my older post, you will know I like the prequels.
As for making my post trendy? Good gawd, I don’t think we are even on the same planet here! As for doing my homework? Man, I am a huge fan of the ships in SW more than anyone I know and what makes you think I will miss the Hammerhead? You did not embarrass me, omg you are so full of yourself here! I love that ship since, get this, KOTOR!
You are the one trying so hard to be hip and trendy. Omg, hip and trendy! LOLOL
LOL all I am saying is your comment makes no sense because you are blaming the design team for the ugly ships. Well guess what, JJ is the one who chose those designs. If you see the concept art for episode 7 the ship designs are awesome. But JJ was an idiot and tried to make every single element in that movie look like a cheap knock off of the original trilogy. And btw those concept art photos in TFA concept art book where created by that same design team that you keep complaining about. If there is anyone you should blame its JJ Abrams for being an idiot and not wanting to do anything fresh. The design team is just doing their job and following the directors orders. Also nowhere on your post does it say you like the prequels. Also stop being a baby about “name calling” geez dude how long have you been on the internet? You seem to be very new. So because I said your where a blind bat and you were dumb af you gonna get triggered like that? Your comment about the design team is stupid. End of story.
Awww come on, don’t be so stupid to expect everyone to agreed with what you feel in the internet. If you don’t agreed with me and if you say it nicely, we could have a wonderful exchange as I did with some other members but nooooo, you decided to call me names and yes, I get triggered when people get rude! And you can go back to my old post in my account to read what I said about the prequels, I will not go back and find it for you.
Maybe you are part of the design team because you seems so provoked and bitchy, who knows and I hope you are because I won’t change what I feel. Art of TFA book is filled with seriously beautiful art of characters and sceneries, no doubt about that! But good ships or weapon designs? I don’t see a lot of it. Ah well, I don’t think we will go anywhere with this so, at least you should be happy that I agreed with 1 thing with you and that is, End of Story!
“don’t be so stupid to expect everyone to agreed with what you feel in the internet” You’re the one getting extremely triggered over me calling you out on your dumbness. And you are telling me that I might be part of the design team? LOL yeah keep trolling your ass off kid. You’re just making yourself even more stupid.
Nah, you are making yourself look like an asshole! Maybe you needed some attention or something, go to your parents for that. Don’t come to me tho, I think I given you enough time. People like you are worthless to converse with and nothing constructive will emerge. Adios, amigo and hope you don’t get deported when Trump come to office! Annnnnnnddd here’s the block button!
Why not an upgraded TIE Bomber? I don’t mind them keeping the TIE cockpit like they always do but get creative from there.
