George Lucas To Receive Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes on May 25

Thank the Maker! George Lucas will be receiving the Honorary Palme d’Or at the Closing Ceremony of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the organization announced today.

Lucas said in a statement:

“The Festival de Cannes has always held a special place in my heart. I was surprised and elated when my first film, THX-1138, was selected to be shown in a new program for first time directors called the Directors’ Fortnight. Since then, I have returned to the festival on many occasions in a variety of capacities as a writer, director and producer. I am truly honored by this special recognition which means a great deal to me.”

The event will take place on May 25, coincidentally, which marks the 47th anniversary of the release of Star Wars. It will be broadcast live on France Télévisions and Brut. and will be hosted by Camille Cottin. Last year, another Star Wars personality, Harrison Ford, was awarded the same prize while attending the first screening of the new Indiana Jones film.

George Lucas has been living a much more reserved life since selling off Lucasfilm to Disney, and has barely made any public appearances in the last few years. As Disney’s largest individual shareholder, he recently posted a statement backing Bob Iger in the company’s proxy fight against activist investor Nelson Peltz. He was also at the premiere in Los Angeles of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Of course, behind the scenes, he’s also been in contact with Dave Filoni and visited the sets of The Mandalorian. Recently, he topped Forbes‘ list of richest celebrities, thanks to his Disney investment as part of the Lucasfilm sale.
