UPDATE: PlayStation 1’s ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’ Coming to Playstation Plus Premium January 16

UPDATE: PlayStation Blog has revealed that PlayStation 1’s Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is coming to PlayStation Plus as part of the Premium subscription tier. It will be made available to play on the service’s digital library starting January 16.

PlayStation Plus Premium’s subscription tier allows PS4 and PS5 owners the ability to download and play a library of PS1, PS2, and PSP games. PS3 games are also available via cloud streaming.

The original story and coverage are available down below.

The retro PlayStation 1 title Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace appears to be coming soon to the PlayStation Plus Classics catalog, as per a recent ratings leak. Video game news publisher Gematsu spotted the rating originally from Taiwan. It lists Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

While the game was originally released on PC and PlayStation in 1999, it has not been officially ported or made available to play on more modern platforms. With the recent ratings listing putting the game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, it’s more than likely that the game will be coming to the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. The Classics Catalog is currently only for those subscribed to PlayStation Plus’ Premium tier.

Sony has yet to officially announce its new PlayStation Plus games lineup for December. So the addition has yet to be officially confirmed.

Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace is a top-down, action/adventure game that primarily adapts the events of the movie into a video game. Players control a number of the same characters from the movie, including Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Padmé, and can use their lightsabers and Force abilities in combat and to solve puzzles. The game also has slight variations in the story compared to that of the movie.

The possible addition of Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace does line up with the game and the movie’s 25th anniversary next year. It also follows a string of recent ports and remasters of classic Star Wars games. This possible action also bodes well for the future of video game preservation, and for helping to make these classic titles more accessible for current fans.
