Cavan Scott Shares Inspirations Behind ‘Star Wars: Tales from the Death Star,’ New Pages and Art Shown

In an interview with StarWars.com, author, Cavan Scott, shared his inspirations behind the new book Tales from the Death Star. A few pages from the comic, showcasing its horror-inspired art, were also shown following the official release of the anthology comic today. It is being marketed as a “fun for all ages” comic for everyone to enjoy. In the interview, Scott discussed how the anthology series came about and why he chose the Death Star as the central location.

When asked to elaborate on some of the series’ original inspirations, Scott drew attention to the horror connections that were already established in Star Wars from actors with such classic horror roles in their resume as Peter Cushing’s (Tarkin) Frankenstein and Christopher Lee’s (Count Dooku) Dracula, among others:

“The original idea for the Halloween specials came from a lunch with [Lucasfilm Publishing creative director] Mike Siglain way back in, I think it was 2017? We talked about the links between the horror films we loved and Star Wars, the biggest being the two grandmasters of Hammer Horror, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. We started riffing on creepy Star Wars stories we could create for their galaxy far, far away characters. Grand Moff Tarkin as Baron Frankenstein? Yes, please. Count Dooku as Dracula? I mean, it wrote itself. And the Halloween anthologies were born.”

Scott was also asked why the Death Star was chosen for this anthology. His response highlights how he wanted to make the location the central character most of all:

“In past anthologies, the individual stories haven’t had much to do with the location, other than maybe a few stories set in Vader’s castle. For this, I wanted to tell only stories that related to the Death Star…or rather, Death Stars! The battle station became the most important character.”

The article also showcased a selection of pages straight from the comic. Check out the pages below:

A hooded figure warns a young boy not to explore the remains of the Death Star and serves as the framing for Tales of the Death Star.

In the story, “The Creature from the Trash Compactor,” artist Vincenzo Riccardi serves up a grotesque-looking dianoga.

“We Shall Double Our Efforts” imagines the Empire utilizing zombies to help achieve their work quotas.

An Ewok ghost haunts a TIE Pilot in “Wild Squadron,”

Grand Moff Tarkin is seeing ghosts of Saw Gerrera’s past in “The Haunting of Grand Moff Tarkin.”
