Editorial: Who is Enoch? Speculation and Theories About Thrawn’s Mysterious Captain From ‘Ahsoka’

One of the new characters from Ahsoka is the mysterious Captain Enoch. He’s a character with a stand-out design and an unknown background, causing many fans to question who he is. Here are some theories and speculations on just who Captain Enoch is and what may be in store for the character in a possible Ahsoka season 2.

Captain Enoch is portrayed by actor Wes Chatham in Ahsoka. The official description on StarWars.com lists the character as “Grand Admiral Thrawn’s captain of the guard.” It also says that “Capitan Enoch is an ominous sentinel,” who “wears a modified helmet with a golden face hammered into his mask.” While the official description doesn’t provide any substantial background about the character, his name is possibly the biggest clue to his past.

Enoch is a biblical name. Of course, Star Wars is no stranger to biblical allegories. Many names are taken from the Bible. Each Star Wars character named after biblical figures carries similar connections to their biblical counterparts. Think of Ezra Bridger and how Biblical Ezra was responsible for helping to rebuild Jerusalem after it was destroyed. Or think of Kanan Jarrus (pronounced exactly like Canaan from the Bible) and how he was striving his entire life to feel like the Jedi he was meant to be. In the Bible, the Israelites spent decades in the desert striving to reach “the Promised Land,” called Canaan.

In the Bible, Enoch is mentioned as one of the few individuals before the Flood who “pleased God.” Hebrews 11:5 provides the best description of Enoch, where it says, “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found because God had translated him.” The word “translated” has many interpretations, but is most commonly thought to mean that God turned him into a spirit being before he was killed. Genesis 5:23 says “And all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty five years,” meaning that he only lived physically for 365 years. That is a long time to live. But considering that the Bible says Adam and many others before the Flood lived upwards of over 900 years, it becomes clear that Enoch was physically taken away to possibly avoid an unfortunate death.

What does this mean for the character in Ahsoka? My guess is that Enoch may have been an inhabitant originally from Peridea. I theorize that Enoch probably helped Thrawn survive on the planet when he first got there. Because of this, I suspect that Thrawn probably rewarded Enoch by eventually granting him immortality. Possibly the Nightsisters had a hand in this.

Enoch and his name could also refer to Thrawn “translating” him from one location to another. While the above interpretation has Enoch being “translated” spiritually, perhaps it could be referring to something more physical. If Enoch was originally from Peridea, that means Thrawn physically translated him from Peridea to Dathomir. Perhaps this is the sort of “salvation” both Thrawn and Enoch were looking for.

And what of Enoch’s golden gladiatorial helmet? This part is a little fuzzy as gladiator helmets did feature ornate designs like the one Enoch wears. They not only look fancy but also serve the functional purpose of protecting the front of the face. Could that mean Enoch was a “gladiator” of sorts, defeating other troops to win Thrawn’s favor? It certainly could. However, my best guess is that the helmet is just for design purposes, helping Enoch to stand out among the other troopers.

Ahsoka certainly planted the seeds that’ll allow its newer characters a chance to grow. Even characters like Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati still have an opportunity to shine in the inevitable second season for Ahsoka. In the next season, my guess is that Enoch will get more screen time, possibly even an entire fight sequence against some of our heroes. After all, it would be a wasted opportunity if Enoch’s gladiatorial connections went unexplored, and he didn’t get a fight scene at all, possibly with some hand-to-hand combat weapons. But hopefully, he doesn’t get put in the bin with the dozen other characters with cool designs that only last in the series for just a few minutes.

But it’s probably going to be that.
