‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ in Cannes: Harrison Ford Surprised With Honorary Palme D’Or; Film Received 5-Minute Standing Ovation

Lucasfilm is getting ready for its first theatrical release in two-and-a-half years with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night.

In attendance were director James Mangold and the main cast, led by Harrison Ford himself, but also Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, along with her husband and producer on the film, Frank Marshall, as well as Disney CEO Bob Iger. But before the screening of the film began, film festival head Theirry Fremaux surprised Ford by awarding him an honorary Palme d’Or. That got a very emotional response from Ford, who was so choked up he could barely speak when accepting it. He ended by simply saying “I’m honored but I got a movie you gotta see”. The first-ever public screening of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the audience (one of the toughest to show a film to in the world) stood up for a five-minute ovation which, according to Deadline, once again left Ford very emotional, as well as director James Mangold. When given a mic to speak, Mangold said the following:

“Merci, I just wanted to say thank you, thank you so much for having us here. One thing that was true then and true now is that this film was made by friends. … It’s hard probably for you to believe that a movie this big can be made by friends, but it was. It was made out of love, it was made out of devotion to what came before it, and it was made with tremendous trust from all these people.”

To say that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has been a passion project for Ford for many years would be an understatement. It’s been clear from the first time he started talking about it, that this was the film he wanted to say goodbye to his iconic characters with — even after reprising the roles of Han Solo in The Force Awakens and Deckard in Blade Runner 2049, Indiana Jones was always the one that holds the most special place in his heart. We still have another month before we get to see the movie, but the first few reviews are already out there for those curious. More and more will surely be added over the next few days/weeks as press screenings around the world begin.

Disney also revealed a new promo for the film ahead of the Cannes premiere:
