Star Wars: The Last Jedi Nominated for Four Academy Awards

The 2018 Academy Award nominations were just announced live and Star Wars: The Last Jedi has secured four nominations!

In addition to being the sixth highest grossing film of all time domestically, and ninth worldwide, The Last Jedi can now add four Oscar nominations to its impressive list of accomplishments. Rian Johnson’s latest installment in the saga has been nominated in the following categories:

  • Visual Effects
  • Original Score – John Williams
  • Sound Mixing
  • Sound Editing

Congratulations to Rian Johnson, Lucasfilm, and Disney. These types of nominations have become expected of Star Wars films, known for their powerful scores and state of the art sound and visual effects. The Academy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and will take place on March 4th on ABC.

The Last Jedi already has one Oscar, let’s see if they can pull in a few more.

They agree with the Oscars. Not a single nomination for story, plot, writing, script, characters, acting… which those people complained about.
On the other hand the Academy gave some rather pointless technical nominations that even the prequels got and that will go to any blockbuster to afford fancy CGI and sound editing software.

These four categories should be no surprise for any Star Wars movie regardless of story and acting. I think anyone can agree that music, sound, and visuals have always been a strong point from Star Wars movies.

Happy for John Williams, beautiful score! Everyone may disagree with me but I was kind of hoping Mark was recognized (as well as editing, screenplay, etc) but that rarely happens with high profile films like this. Thankful for what we got.

Although I’m passioned about The Last Jedi and Mark’s performance, there was a scene that for me was a bad choice in terms of performance (probably from Rian Johnson) and this is the the flashback where Luke is going to kill Ben, specially Kylo’s version in the story in which Luke is kind of a killer. Probably it was a conscious choice to exagerate Hamill’s evil performance, but it just looked really out of place to me, as if I was watching classic Japanese theater.

That’s fair…I loved the scene and what it meant for the story but I kind of agree. That aside I was really happy with what he did. I know it may have been more of a fanboy wish to see him get a nomination. 🙂

I think in all versions of that scene Luke was portrayed as a killer. To think about striking down his unarmed, back turned sleeping nephew is pretty twisted no matter what was going on in the lads head. However, Marks performance in TLJ was undoubtedly great and he should have been up for a nomination at least.

I get what you say, but I think the Kylo version is the one that goes further away. Actually, the one he ignites the saber and automatically regrets what he’s doing was spot on.

None of these were a shock. I was crossing my fingers that Mark Hamill would sneak in there too just because his performance was awesome in The Last Jedi, but its hard to say that he was better than those nominated. Alec Guinness will probably be the only actor to ever get nominated for a Star Wars film.

While sound production is currently a hot topic — here’s an interesting read about pioneering sound designer Ben Burtt’s absence / quiet exit from Lucasfilm.

    https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2017/12/ben-burtt-star-wars-sound

There are rumors of J.J. Abrams roping him back in for IX. Confirmation of the veracity of these rumors from anyone in-the-know would be appreciated. But please don’t cite IMDB as a reliable source, as they frequently cut & paste with little regard for accuracy (at least in the very early stages of a film’s production). Regardless, I’d love to hear that he’s returning.

(I’d also love to know the scoop regarding Doug Chiang and Ryan Church’s quiet exits from the art department.)

If that’s true, terrific. Weak sound design…and possibly mix as well…has been a recurring theme in the 3 new films – for example, Chewie and R2 are both entirely recycled sounds, vehicles are all also pretty much using the existing library, what new weapons we’ve got all lack punch. It’s not like BAD design, but it’s uninspiring, and Burtt is missed.

He was fortunately around for TFA. Ben and J.J. developed a good working relationship on Trek.

Yeah, but it sounds like ‘contributing sound designer’ rather than the head of the team on that film. Not sure how much he actually did that ended up in the movie, and listening to it, I don’t know how much I’d believe is Burtt apart from the legacy sounds.

Although Burtt is the father of iconic Star Wars sounds, I think it’s difficult to compare the whole of the sound experience from the OT and PT with the current gen movies. I can say that, on the whole, the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track on the Rogue 1 home theatre release provides far and away the best sonic experience in my library and I was blown away at IMAX. So maybe the next BB-8 or spaceship sounds will be less inspired for Burtt’s absence, but I expect the soundscape overall will continue to be more impressive overall. Just my opinion.

that takes you right out of the scene, when you notice the reused sound cues for R2 and Chewie, as well as the ship sounds.

Wasn’t Doug Chiang the co-production designer on Rogue One? Sounds like he’s moving up if anything. I mean, John Knoll has only worked on Rogue One as far as new SW is concerned, probably because he was so invested in it. I imagine the same is true for many people behind-the-scenes on SW.

I’m sure that sound mixing and editing will be both won by Dunkirk, due to the fact that sound often was used as a narrative device. TLJ has some chance in the score category, if they don’t choose to give that too to The Shape of Water.

Visuals effects as always were top notch. I really feel Rogue One should have won the year it was in. Jungle Book was impressive and Kubo too… but R1 created a nearly believable human being. THE most difficult thing to accomplish. Jungle Book was practically ALL CGI and it showed. Most animals were impressive but then some of them clearly were not.

Kubo would have been simply the pure effort put into that work. If it had won I’d have been equally happy.

I don’t think TLJ has any chance except for Best Original Score.
But that award seems to be given completely randomly, ignoring the best work of the year to eventually acknowledge someone that the Academy inexplicably snubbed at the right time (like Ennio Morricone, who should’ve won like a dozen times already in the last decades, but was only awarded for possibly his weakest work).

It’s because of what I wrote in that previous comment I think. The Academy finally realised that Ennio Morricone dosen’t have an Oscar yet for some inexplicable reason (except for a liftime award “only”), so they subbed the TFA score which was without any question far better and original than Hateful Eight’s…

John Williams deserves a lifetime achievement Oscar for his work on the entire Star Wars musical compendium. Perhaps after Episode IX is complete.

Or just for scoring most of our collective childhoods – both in and out of Star Wars – for three generations and counting.

On reading the bad reviews and good ones, I would say most folk agreed the visual effects were excellent. I Wouldn’t be surprised if it did win.I thought the cinematography was top-notch too.

undoubtly a visually beautiful movie, with great performances, and a fresh story, not the same old ” the all powerful bad guy die at the end of the third act” and ” the hero is a brainless inhuman robot with no human feelings , no mind changing even after 30 years of war and imune to any disappointment “

Regardless of the Star Wars movie, you can always count on John Williams to deliver a beautifully crafted soundtrack. Just give him a lifetime achievement award.

Unfortunately nothing positive to talk about.

Rebels trailed did not revealed much to talk about and we have to wait till 19.2. , Solo movie still has no trailer …
So all the news are more or less related to TLJ :/
For someone who checks the site for a daily news about SW, what else to do ?

I think because the (oh so ironically named) REAL star wars fan basically spams every post with hate.

I don’t think it’s so ironic, we all know from the prequel hatred that “you’re not a REAL fan if you don’t hate everything that isn’t The Godly And Almighty Original Trilogy”.

For calling TLJ inane? Not a chance in hell. That’s not how we operate around here.

Mind you, I really like TLJ, so this isn’t about personal bias. Simply criticizing a SW film isn’t a bannable offense. Doing so in a way that involves personal attacks, for example – THAT would be a problem. Trolling/spamming, there’s a line you don’t want to cross.

But expressing a basic negative opinion certainly doesn’t rise to the level of a ban.

AS long it’s has nothing to do with that mess of a script. When you have to pull out noncannon books to justify your actions you suck.

I really wanted Mark to be nominated, I guess the Academy is prejudiced against green milk. In all, besides cinematography, the only good thing I got out of TLJ was the acting.
