New Star Wars: The Last Jedi Behind the Scenes Reel Released!

Disney has officially revealed new Behind the Scenes reel for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, during their Live Action panel at D23 in Anaheim. Check it out…

We’ve been hearing for months about this BTS reel. We heard that it was ready even before this year’s Star Wars Celebration at Orlando, but for some reasons they decided to hold it for a later time. Now this time has come and we can finally see it. Enjoy:

Stay tuned for our breakdown of the footage and further coverage of the event.

    “new, fresh, surprising, powerful.”

It has to me. Nostalgia isn’t going to carry TFA. And really, I do hope so. Especially, given the latest Forces of Destiny stuff with Rey which was fantastic and did her so much more justice than her own movie.

But really, I trust Rian Johnson. Unless, he is coerced by Kennedy and Abrams, he would NEVER copy ESB. His pride would not allow him to do so. In fact, when I met him a while back, he always talked about integrity when writing, namely that if someone borrows ideas from a prior story; it is meaningless as it is the easy way. Now, for granted; RJ could have changed(this was years ago, back in 2010). But really, if he is the person I know he is; we are in for something truly breathtaking. 🙂

John Boyega has such presence, energy, and genuine passion; you can feel it just watching him walk out onto the stage during the Battlefront II presentation. I think even after Star Wars he’s going to be huge.

I was wondering if there were going to be cutting back to Chewie and R2 waiting around at the Falcon, and so happy to see that they will be. And yeah, that is a great shot. I hope they don’t screw up the Chewie and Luke reunion, the way they screwed up Chewie and Leia after Han’s death. Chewie is as much a part of the OT team as Luke, Han, and Leia, and should have the same kinda family-type bond with Luke too.

It is a consequence of JJ’s code of silence and what he produced. Much as I dislike Abrams, I do respect him for keeping things under wraps. I wish a lot more directors did that more. But really, this is due to how TFA very much was a glorified TV pilot with ANH. It lacks rewatch value to a lot of people.

Really, TFA’s situation reminds me a lot of LOTRS Fellowship. Except, Fellowship was better. I love SWs, but really; I do argue they should have looked LESS towards Marvel and more towards LOTRS. Or heck, Planet of the Apes. The new trilogy is badass. But still, I am super excited for TLJ.

“this is due to how TFA very much was a glorified TV pilot with ANH. It lacks rewatch value to a lot of people.” L0L.

Except that TFA made almost 2.1b worldwide – a number you make only with repeated views – AND had amazing home video sales (again, worldwide) – meaning people all over the world actually want to rewatch that movie.

And your premise IS right: people tend not to appreciate rehashed stuff. Which is why TFA was so successful: because it’s not “ANH 2.0”.

        • July 17, 2017 at 3:54 am
          Permalink

Argumentum Ad Populum. Just because something is popular doesn’t make it right. Something like Star Wars, arguably had a lot of intrinsic value when it comes to popularity. So really, that in of itself could attribute to TFA’s popularity.

Or heck, the fact that TEN years went by without a SWs movie. So, nostalgia had a large impact on that success. Especially, with all the advertising and publicity behind it. So, you can provide money and whatever statistics you want to prove your case, but in this case, where it is subjective feelings, your evidence is a trite one. At the end of the day, sales are an indicator of popularity. But everything that is not popular does not equate to quality. If that were the case, then something like Transformers should be extremely well-received given its sales both in theaters and Blu-ray/ Digital downloads.

So really, your sarcastic remark serves nothing more than to indicate someone who has a nerve struck; an individual who feels like their tribe is threatened. And I have no time to waste on those who resort to such mental gymnastics.

          Peace.

It is ANH 2.0…ANYTHING that came out Star Wars with the big 3 coming back, was guaranteed to make this kind of money.

It was the worst in the entire 7 films and killed the entire point of the original 6. High hopes that a good story in 8 will make me forget 7!

Objectively…key word. From a story perspective it is much less than all of them. Acting was better in TFA than the prequels, but that is about all I can give it credit for. It was such a weak story, that relied on rehashing the events of ANH in so many ways that it was comical for me.

What if the fresh direction is Kylo Ren actually going over to the light side after Snoke betrays him ? there is this shot in the reel where Kylo seems to be in a Resistance type briefing room without his helmet. What if early in the movie Snoke tries to kill Kylo and they fight to the death, Kylo escapes, looses his helmet and joins the heroes (creating a lot of tension) Or is it me that in some shots Kylo looks….less evil then expected ? Also..think about this: The elite Praetorian Guards are supposed to be Snoke’s personal bodyguards….yet we seen artwork of them fighting ( and i think we see them in action in this reel ) so that means there is attempt on Snoke’s life forcing the guard to protect their master…..It cannot be that Luke and rey already confront Snoke in Ep 8 right ?

What if Han had actually become a bad guy and did some evil stuff and his death scene in TFA was taken out of context? Meaning, Kylo killed him because of something really bad Han did “Your son is gone! He was weak and foolish, like his father…” They want to turn Star Wars upside down and go dark? That would be dark….

Or Luke, rather than Ben, was actually the one responsible for the destruction of the Jedi Academy ? I’m thinking that is increasingly plausible.

Another fresh direction possibility, though a longshot:

The Resistance wins in Episode VIII — they utterly destroy the FO. The End. So what happens in Episode IX?

Perhaps the defeat of the FO releases an even graver threat, and this involves the dark side, something from beyond the Outer Rim. This would be the chapter in which the light and dark side of the Force has to be resolved. This is when the “balance” must happen finally. Episode IX could take place years after TFA and TLJ (which would together function as a two-parter).

If Kylo went to the light side and Rey to the dark, I would applaud that as that would be one of the balisest decisions LF has ever made. And really, it would make TFA a lot more bearable. Because, really; the only new character I remotely like is Kylo. A bet I have some issues with his character, but overall Adam Driver did a fantastic job acting. A shame the dialogue wasn’t up to snuff. But hey, actors can only do so much.

Overall, this looks interesting. I will admit; I am excited because I do love Rian Johnson as a director and am curious. But notice how they are saying that the movie is going to go in a new direction. On one hand, this is to be expected. TFA’s demons have caught up with LF and yeah, it may have its fans, but more and more have accepted that it was very much ANH TV pilot edition. That doesn’t mean nobody can like it. Far from it. But rather, this was a big gamble for LF.

And really, I will be honest; i never liked Abrams and was more excited for episode eight and nine. But I digress. As for the behind the scenes stuff, I love it. I love the weird creatures, good use of set design and color palette. Good for RJ to continue that angle. And overall, I truly believe we are in for something really cool.

I know it is very easy to be cynical. And heck, a part of me is. Though,I just watch RO and it vaporizes. But really, TLJ will not be ESB 2.0. It cannot be. It would look worse on LF as that movie is a beloved classic. But if the movie borrows form ESB in terms of tone, character-driven narrative, and darker themes; it should be fine.

Plus, there is the First Jedi temple. Something I truly believe will be a sight to behold. Overall, I am optimistic and I wish Rian Johnson the best of luck. 🙂

While I admit TFA has a lot of similarities to ANH, the only one that really annoys me is the Starkiller base (it and obvious “leys make another Death Star but different”).

But TFA did it job in introduced all these characters and set up this time period. I suspect we will eb exploring these characters well beyond a single trilogy, hence TFA won’t seem so major in the future.

It did a meh job in my view. Really, JJ Abrams’ footprint and is lousy directing style are more than evident. Really, the only time I have liked Rey is really the Forces of Destiny special. And really, that didn’t have Abrams footsprint. Hence, why I am more excited for TLJ as unlike JJ Abrams, Rian Johnson knows how to direct people well. He made Bruce Willis, an actor who has really lost a lot of his chops, amazing in a film like Looper. I can only imagine what he will do with the new cast.

But really, TFA, even if TLJ manages to fill in most of the cracks to me is nothing more than diet Fellowship, except replace the intent for a solo movie/ connection of a trilogy to nothing more than MCU style setup. But alas, I would be dogmatic if I said that I wouldn’t at the very least be willing to re-evaluate TFA once TLJ comes out.

Yeah. Just my view on the matter. I never really liked him as a director. Really, the only film I genuinely like of his is MI3, where his fast-paced style and witty dialogue work because of the genre of the film, a spy movie. To me Abrams failed not just because he copied ANH, but he failed to understand why that movie worked in the first place. I am not above to accepting that this movie drawing callbacks to ANH. But it fundamentally failed in my view to understand why ANH worked and its significance.

If this movie was just a pure reboot, cool. I can accept that. But it isn’t. As a continuation, it is to me subpar. Regardless, I am still looking for to TLJ because one of my favorite directors is doing it and I know he can produce fantastic work. But again, my view. I don’t expect everyone to agree nor should they. Echo-chambers are a dangerous thing, for hearing’s a uniform voice dilutes one’s mind to greater possibilities. 🙂

I didn’t mind the premise of Star Killer base…..but maybe they should have saved that weapon as a secret until episode 9.

The group that I was with all had the same reactions…shock that it was so similar and Starkiller, literally had us bust out laughing. 7 was great right up until Rey left Jakku…it was all down here from there, for me. I’ve seen many people go from loving it to being not so amazed once the shine of the new movie wore off. It is by far the weakest of the 7 from a story perspective.

I do hope that 8 will make me forget about 7 completely.

It goes to showcase how faulty that screenplay is and how Kasdan and Ardnit really seemed like their hands were tied. But that is what happens when you MCU up SWs. Not that I have anything against the MCU.

Really, I have a ton more faith in TLJ because Rian Johnson wrote the screenplay and the man is a masterful writer. I sat down in one of his lectures on screenplays(this was when I wanted to get into screenwriting, long ago) and I was blown away. The lessons he taught I still take to this day when crafting my own stories.

So, I truly believe that TLJ will be something fantastic. If this movie does focus a lot on the First Jedi temple and the history of the Jedi, while tying into the plot of the movie; this movie, if done well, will be Korra Second season.

A fantastic standalone story that enhances the overall mythos. And after TFA, I really want that. Super badly. 🙂

TFA’s demons? You do realize this movie was in production before TFA was released?
This was the plan. nostalgia at first to remind people of Star Wars and now for something completely different.

Well, it is the same old spin again: “unexpected”, “shocking”, “will turn everything upside down”, with the added line now that, although unexpected, it is “right” and “honest”. Personally, I think they are overplaying that card. So, either they are really worried that audiences might react negatively (and thus need to be warned), or they don’t know or have a better way to promote the movie. Either way, it is troublesome.

Or you could wait until the movie comes out. Watch it and then determine if you like it or not. Just saying.

Like what I saw, but I still need Luke to wield a Lightsaber (Poster does not count, that’s Rey’s) and in my own opinion, I feel Kelly is kinda out of place, pretty sure she was cast for the Asian market (oh, yes, I did)

I sort of agree. I don’t want to get into the social/racial aspects of it, but she (Kelly) does seem out of place. I can’t really say why, it’s just a feeling I have when I see her in stills or promo shorts like this one. But RJ and the filmmakers at Lucasfilm are much smarter people than me, so if they saw something special in her I will trust their judgement.

I always like to think the more someone masters a skill, the less they have to show it, I’m guessing that Luke won’t even use the lightsaber in VIII to show how powerful and in tune with the force he’s become.

You make a good point. We never saw Yoda use a lightsaber in the OT, but we knew he was a master of the Force. I do have to admit though, I would LOVE to see Luke spark up mean green again in this movie – but I will understand why if he doesn’t.

I don’t get the complaints. People think it will be like Empire, they complain. The cast say it’s unexpected, they complain. A trailer has First Order Heavy Assault Walkers and people complain. The trailer has Rey training and people complain. How about watching the movie first and then, if you don’t like it, you can complain. It’s getting tiresome cutting through post after post of bitching to get to people who actually do want to see this movie.

I like what I’ve seen so far and can’t wait for it to come out. Maybe I’ll like it, maybe I won’t. But I won’t know until December like everyone else.

You cannot please everyone. That is a fact in life. I have plenty of issues with TFA as it very much was a nostalgia driven movie and my view a lot of style and a lack of substance. But that is JJ Abrams in a nutshell. That aside, I am very excited for TLJ. For granted, one of my favorite directors of all time is tackling the project and I would be dishonest if I didn’t admit my bias towards him and his work.

My only hope is that RJ will not copy ESB. Or rather, LF, specifically KK, strongarm him into remaking that movie. Because, knowing Rian Johnson; he would never do that. And while a behind of the scenes, I honestly got so much more faith that this will be its own thing.

Rogue One, while flawed, impressed me with its willingness to be different and very much felt like something out of Legends. I am hoping TLJ, takes a lot of that inspiration, namely with the First Jedi temple. Something, a lot of people, naysayers included, aren’t giving enough credit. Because, if this movie is like Legend of Korra Second season where the history of the Jedi/ Sith tie into the main plot; we are in for a treat.

Because, I truly believe that this movie has the potential to be a kickass solo film, and something that like LoK enhanced the mythos of the franchise. My only sadness is that we will not see the fully fledged Jedi Order resurrected. Sigh… Still looking forward to it.

Agreed. Even if there is I think it will be a private moment of mourning for luke and leia and chewie more than some big black-tie event. Han was a war hero but he was also a smuggler who’s son now leads the first order with little to no other family. Plus it would be a bit callus unless it was also a funeral for the multiple planets that were destroyed and their hundreds of citizens. Not just one person. A funeral for han seems like a moment for the comics of a novelization.

Not totally sure that’s Snoke. Kinda looks like him, yes – but it might just be another alien creature. We know Snoke is big (about 7 feet tall according to rumor), but not that big. The hologram image we saw of him in TFA was supposedly much enlarged.
