Also Rian Johnson revealed that in his mind The Last Jedi has always been singular, with Luke being the last Jedi.

It seems obvious that Luke is not keen to train Ray (as he is far away from anyone to be alone) but with regards to these last words in the trailer…. – what if Luke is telling a story to Ray (we see the temple on fire) and he quotes someone else saying “It’s time for the jedi to end”. Maybe these words are just taken out of context for the teaser… to ‘tease’ us more.

Bro, it’s Rey. Not Ray. She’s not a 45 year old construction worker from New York.

        She’s the new Jedi hotness.

If the “Last Jedi” has always been singular in the director’s mind, then he should have told that to the translators who came up with the OFFICIAL movie titles in French, German, Spanish, Italian, and other languages. I fear that Rian Johnson sometimes looks like he doesn’t really know what he’s doing and today’s trailer didn’t helo a lot in dismissing that fear.

^ It’s the official title of the film and is printed on TONS of marketing material, costing millions of dollars to make. Seems kinda important, and like something a lot of people should care about.

I don’t think its down to him personally to tell them.

Whoever is in charge of marketing in Disney/Lucasfilm dropped the ball on the translations, not Rian, or do you really believe he’s in charge of calling everybody up.

      1) What the heck has Rian Johnson, a director, to do with how a title is translated?

      2) Johnson is one of the best new directors of our time, “Looper” is (objectively) one of the best action/sci-fi movies of the last 30 years and his work on “Breaking Bad” is astounding. Rather than him not knowing what he’s doing, are you sure that you know what you’re talking about?

Being a good director in general doesn’t necessarily imply understanding SW and respecting the original source material. Besides, RJ is obviously not “one of the best directors of our time”; that’s a ludicrous statement. On the translation mistake, it should be pointed out that “The Last Jedi” is a pretty straightforward phrase, so the use of plural articles, nouns and adjectives in the translations in pretty much all other European languages was not simply a mistake, but a genuine misconception on the part of he studio.

Although it is not the personal responsibility of the director to tell that to the translators (that was a rhetorical point), one should expect him to care enough about his artistic work to point that to the studio before millions of dollars were spent in international marketing. Or else, maybe it was a flip-flop or there is indeed a creative disagreement about the script, which is what I believe is the case.

I highly doubt that – in movies this huge – the director actually has any say about the title and I’m also almost completely sure that RJ doesn’t (and shouldn’t, really) give a damn about how the title is translated. That’s marketing and – if indeed there were a screw up, it’s on the marketing department/the studio. That said, behind it being a curiosity, I really don’t see how this actually matter: whatever the implication of the title is, singular or plural, I don’t see how is it going to impact the actual movie.

On a different note: please, go on and explain how Johnson is not among the best directors of his generation, because I’m REALLY curious about that statement you made 🙂

Considering the title is officially plural in every country where the language uses articles and/or adjectives that match the noun, this means either someone as Lucasfilm fucked up BIG TIME or the producers disagree with the damn writer/director of the film about the title of his own movie, which would be pretty ridiculously dumb, imo. Either way, seems like a big screw up on someone’s part.

I agree and I’m afraid, there are many signs now pointing to a possible screw up in TLJ. It seems that the director and writer of the movie has a confusing vision on the direction he is taking SW and maybe little appreciation for long-held SW themes and values. It also seems tha RJ makes more U-turns and flip flops n his comments than the current President of the United States. He is the chaos drector, which should be pretty scary for SW fans.

There’s a long history of dire translations of Star Wars. Even “Star Wars” itself – in French, “Star” is plural and “Wars” becomes singular “La Guerre des Etoiles”. Then, for example, the Millenium Falcon changes names between the OT movies – take your pick from Millenium Condor, Faucon Millenaire, Millenium Faucon. I was hoping these issues would be fixed when they did the special editions, but the French translation of Star Wars remains one of the worst translation jobs I have ever seen (by professionals).

I wouldn’t worry too much, it will be someone very junior at Lucasfilm who gave the prompts to the translators as in general US movies really don’t care about foreign versions.

No one would be having this conversation for any other film. It’s
because star wars transcends film that people care this much about a
movie title. Look at Rian’s face when she asks him that, even he is
like.. “Who cares?”. They probably left it open ended on purpose to
leave as many open questions as possible for the audience, and translators just jumped on the same band wagon as every other country
who was translating it at the time. “Oh! Latino translation is plural,
so lets make ours plural!” Just think about it.

Rey’s parentage will be addressed in ‘The Last Jedi’, but not necessarily concluded in that movie.

Exactly. “It will be addressed” is not the same as “We will find out who Rey’s parents are.” We may find out who they are, but we also may find out that no one knows or it’s not important.

        or …
TFA. Imagine if Luke doesn’t get to say a word. How rubbish would that be.
