Star Wars Battlefront 2 Teaser LEAKS!

A TV spot for Star Wars Battlefront 2 has just been released by EA a bit early. Without giving anything away, I’ll just say that they really listened to the fans.

So to cover everything shown here, we’ve got…

  • Content for ALL THREE of the major Star Wars eras.
  • A story campaign shedding new light on the formation of the First Order (with what sounds like Rae Sloane giving orders).
  • Maps representing Endor, Hoth, Naboo, Starkiller Base, Takonada, and what appears to be Coruscant.
  • Greater emphasis on space battles.
  • Yoda, Darth Maul, Rey, and Kylo Ren as playable heroes.
  • Greater emphasis on space battles, featuring playable TIE fighters (Imperial and First Order), X-wings, Y-wings, and the Millennium Falcon.
  • AT-ATs (no word on if they’re completely player-controlled this time).
  • Finally, and most importantly… MELEE TAUNTAUN.

On another note… Was the same kind of probe droid that the Inquisitors had in Season 2 of Rebels? If so, then that’s a neat thing to include. Special thanks to the crew over at Reddit’s Star Wars Leaks sub for pointing this out!

I don’t know. It looks like there’s something extending further back. If this was supposed to be released on Friday after The Last Jedi panel on Thursday, then it’s possible one of the moneyshots of the Episode VIII trailer is Rey lighting that bad boy up. EDIT: [So it was supposed to be common knowledge by the time this dropped.]

Or this is all speculation based on wish fulfillment and I’ve been staring at this grainy picture for the last ten minutes seeing something that’s not there while my eyesight deteriorates. I’ll give myself fifty-fifty odds.

I wouldnt mind if they had a generic jedi model which they could put multiple skins on (Plo Koon, Kit fisto, Aayla Secura etc). But that feel unlikely.
I can see them doing Obi-wan, Ahsoka, Anakin and Rex for the clone wars era.
Then there is the Rebels era (of which Ahsoka is part of )

From the trailer is seems like Theed on Naboo.
I can see them trying to stray from planets which resemble the maps of the ladt game (eg Geonosis resembles Tattoine to a degree).
Mygeeto and Felcuia seem like dinsitinct maps.
I would also suggest Mustafar (but that is very similar to sullist).
Personally, I think the Jedi Temple would be a great map.

      Is the story section canon?
If so I hope they release the actual story in comicbook form (like they did with the Force Unleashed).
While I dont mind games being canon, it would nice to revist the story portion of games in a novel/book as it quite a commitment to play a game from begining to end.

      • April 12, 2017 at 7:17 am
        Permalink

I’m guessing the story cutscenes and anything else not determined by the player would be Canon, but that’s usually good enough for me (I prefer cinematic content over written and/or drawn). I don’t read adaptations unless the source fails to get the story across adequately, but I see your point about commitment (except for novels, a novel is usually a more grueling undertaking to me than a game).

Judging by the artwork in the previews it does look neat, but I’m having trouble keeping up with the volume of original stories as it is, so I have to prioritize. Besides, anything vital to the story of Rogue One is probably in the movie, and I can live without the tidbits.

I didn’t. I liked the first game just fine honestly. And thought that people freaking out about were over board. Especially since I feel like the original BF’s were pretty shit games (I mean they were awesome Star Wars games, but as an actual game, not very good in comparison to what was available as multiplayer team based shooters outside of the franchise) I got in over 100 hours before sadly it was nigh on impossible to play the mode I liked most on PC.

However, I’m not going to complain about this. It looks awesome, and I welcome multiple eras.

But I thought it’d be funny to make fun of the whiners who actually got something everyone wants.

I don’t feel Star Wars is being overly pushy on the political correctness (all I can think of is in the Force Awaknes Rey keeps telling Finn not to take her hand; which was a tad on the nose of ” I dont need a man”).
Im a white male, but I do prefer female characters (I think Rey and Ahsoka are excellent characters).
Personally, I would rather have alien lead characters over a white male human protagonist (especially in a game). I mean it Star Wars why arent the alien species being utilised.

I thought it was funny. I mean, look at what Luke did with Leia on the Death Star. It was nice to have a woman push back, and Rey was pretty bad ass from the get go.

White males will be present. But there’s been so little diversity in the leading cast of the first six movies in a galaxy that is FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH DIVERSITY that this is over due. It’ll settle and round out.

I get that Ren is the bad guy, but he’s still a white dude.

But Luke never had to save Leia. She could always save herself. She gave Luke shit the second she saw him. Grabs the blaster out of his hand and takes charge. Tells Han off. I don’t know where people get this idea from that there wasn’t this in Star Wars previously. It was a fucking pioneer for female empowerment (this is coming from a white guy so I might be completely full of shit)

As Ive stated, I don’t have a problem with strong female characters (they are my favourite type of character; galadriels, Storm in x-men etc).
I just don’t like it when they do ‘obvious’ stuff to make them look strong (such as the dont hold my hand line). To me it feels like the studio saying “look she said dont hold my hand, she is strong. Arent we great for incorprating a stronf female into our film”.
Characters like Ripley in Alien is a perfect example to show a strong female character without spoon feeding it to the audience.

Overall, it was just that one line that annoys me, otherwise Rey was portrayed greta in the film

That line in the movie makes me eye roll every single time. I think the you don’t see Aliens as leads in film or a game is because the producers/people in charge are so scared that people won’t identify with them which makes no sense. I don’t identify as a black woman but I’m still interested in the campaign mode of BF2.

The only times it has been too on-the-nose for me are in the Aftermath novels and that one moment in “A New Dawn” when they mention that some of the helmeted stormtroopers are female for no apparent reason.

As a hard-core conservative who is fed up with political correctness, I think Star Wars is doing diversity right for the most part. They aren’t trying to spoonfeed it to you. They are just trying to expand their audience. But yeah, it’s kinda funny how every main protagonist is female now.

Also not taking in account of mixed races/ethnicities so it’s a little more complicated than that. Alden Ehrenreich, Mark Hamill, Emilia Clark etc would be considered white. Donald Glover, Billy Dee Williams are black (duh), Diego Luna, Oscar Issac are Spanish.

This might surprises you, but there is no Spanish race. Most hispanics are white descents. Without going into details, some of them are clearly
Caucasians, others are part-Caucasian, but most of them have at least some level of Caucasian admixture.

Diego Luna for instance is half British, thus he would be considered white, according to US census.

I never said white was a race, nor will I ever going to. Whites are usually referred to as European descents (caucasians or partially caucasians), which is what I did. Lol and who the fck said British was a race? I very certainly didn’t. All you do falsifying my arguments to fit your beliefs.
You don’t seem to understand the difference between ethnicity and race.

The differences between us rest in genetics, not ethnicity. Although it’s important to note that recent studies show that racial genetic differences are weak.
Anyways, race is a biological construct, while ethnicity is sociological (people who identify with each other based on similarities like language or social, cultural or national ancestry). For a very simple example: Flemish and Wallon are separate ethnic groups, but both are caucasian descents.

I’m not lying. Dude, go look at your own posts.

I get your argument. Genetically, we’re all similar. Yes, correct. We’re also one race. Also correct.

Latino and Hispanic individuals can be descended from Caucasians. Also correct.

But you’re arguing that having leads like Oscar Isaac and Diego Luna is the same as having a lead like Mark Hamill because of genetics and the how the US Census classifies race and ethnicity.

Wrong. Very wrong. Or else this argument wouldn’t have ever started.

Ethnicity is indeed social, but it’s also a person’s identity. Lucasfilm is trying to diversify Star Wars, they aren’t doing it on a genetic level. They’re doing it on an ethnic level.

And if you think Oscar Isaac or Diego Luna identify as a Caucasian, or that Latino and Hispanic fans see them as anything but Latino and Hispanic, then you are what I have already stated repeatedly.

Armada is expensive and a serious time investment for each game. It is gorgeous and fun to play though. The issues around it would be if you can afford it and have people to play it with. It’s not as good for the more casual or action oriented gamer. It takes more strategy and depth than say X-Wing. I get X-Wing on the table a lot more because it is more fast paced and has a shorter learning curve.

I hear you on the WEG game, it is a classic. We have a group that plays on Roll20 and its been a blast running around the Minos Cluster.

Nice. Thanks for the review! Time is my biggest issue. I have several gamer friends, but with children and jobs and such, getting a regular game together is often more complicated than the games themselves. My days of 15 hour RPG sessions every weekend are far behind me.

I’ve always been a staunch supporter of the WEG materials. I never cared much for the old EU, but a lot of the WEG stuff was written before the EU formally debuted with Heir to the Empire. Because it’s so close to the OT, it reeks of authenticity. I studied and studied those earlier entries into the system…

Also, I was a die hard WEG fan too and the new RPG system is absolutely brilliant. Hands down fits Star Wars perfectly for an RPG rule set.

Combat is very well balanced and instinctive.

Totally agree. The game is a masterpiece. It’s based off another game from that company called Descent. Fantasy Flight just sort of ported the game mechanics over to Star Wars and added some elements to distinguish the game. I love it.

Another thing that Fantasy Flight is doing right is supporting their games. Imperial Assault, X-Wing, and Armada have slews of expansions. My Star Wars collection room is slowly turning into my Star Wars gaming room.

I enjoy card games, but I’ve really restricted myself to MTG duel decks and the original Wizards Netrunner release. I played Magic on and off for years. While is a stunningly brilliant game, it’s just too expensive and time consuming to keep up with and I really don’t play that often. When I do, it’s just with a couple buddies over beers or when we’re camping. I play maybe 25 or so games a year. So, the quick premade decks fit the bill. So, I’m about as casual a MTG player as you can get.

What RPG books would you recommend? Only I have the core mechanics for WFRP 4th edition by FFG and I wasn’t that keen on the mechanics, and I’ve heard that Star Wars uses the same.

Is it the narrative dice system for WFRP? That’s what Star Wars uses.

There are three lines of the Star Wars RPG and the core rule books for each do not differ too far from one another in terms of content. It always contains the rules for the game, but then the rest of the content revolves around the setting that core book encompasses.

Edge of the Empire is Smugglers, Bounty Hunters and criminals.

Age of Rebellion is the war between the Empire and Alliance.

Force and Destiny focuses on Force sensitive characters.

It depends on what you and your group would like to do with their characters. When I invested, I initially went Age of Rebellion, but how my friends handled the starting adventure (They were to infiltrate an Imperial base discreetly and capture it. They..pretty much blew everything up) we went Edge.

Each system has a “starter box” it retails for 30 bucks US. It’s an awesome way to start and figure out what you’d like to do. Has an adventure, the rules you need to play it, pregenerated characters, some nice maps, and a set of the dice.

I recommend the Age of Rebellion box, the story was by far my favorite of the four. (They have one for Episode VII now, too )

Cool, thank you for the information.

I’ll take a look on eBay and a few stores. Age of Rebellion sounds right up my street, especially with my love for R1. Force and Destiny might worth a look as a PDF later on.

I assume the mechanics are a bit more refined now. WFRP 3 was I believe more a trial run for the narrative mechanics they developed (not sure why I said 4th, though I think its in development now as well).

After the sour taste from the last one, the only way I get this is if single layer skirmishes come back. They were the best. People live to do nothing but play these games. Going online and dealing with that can be soul crushing. Single player like the old games would be a huge boost for this.

I think the Scarif DLC has had some longevity. The problem is the way they rolled out the DLC. It should have been an all or nothing thing. Splitting it up splits up the player base. It’s a shame because some of those DLC maps were great, especially the Bespin and Death Star ones.

You know that suggestion is impractical at best. There’s no precedent for it in other online shooters, because that’s just the reality of game development – you have to consider player base retention in your live service plan. When the elder players start getting bored, they’ll look for another game unless you release fresh content. How long you can wait between releases depends on the platform and type of game. If they’d waited until they had it all the DLC the can, the original player base (especially considering the anemic amount of content at launch) would have dried up.

        • April 12, 2017 at 9:39 pm
          Permalink

I’m not saying they should have waited to release all the DLC at once. It should have just been an all or nothing proposition. Either you buy all the DLC or you don’t get any of it. That way, you only split the player base in two. Ideally, the DLC is free so you don’t split the base at all. But if you’re going to do a paid-DLC model, it’s better to do all or nothing rather than piecemeal it out.

How much sorting out did they need to do for yet another spawn-die-spawn-die-spawn-die MMO shooter, though? There have only been about a million and six of those things already.

Nothing about the first Battlefront was particularly revolutionary, other than the fact that they finally got models made based on prop, vehicle and set pieces scanned directly from the LFL archives. No reason in the world that the game itself had to be as shallow and vanilla as it ended up being – other than that it was apparently a quick money grab to accompany the release of TFA.

They were required to release the game when it was released when they signed the contract with LFL. EA sucks, don’t get me wrong, but that was solely LFL making that call.

The game wasn’t worth 60 dollars, but it wasn’t nearly as trashy as everyone still wants to make it out to be.

It was shallow and vanilla because they were trying to make the game appeal to a wider audience than your typical shooter players.

To extent I kind of wonder is it so much they listened to the fans as much as it was just their business plan? For example, a lot of Star Wars Youtube Channels can be heard saying that “Celebration 2016 was fun, but a let down” due to the fact that they didn’t show anything with respect to the future films or a lot more from Rogue One. And now Celebration 2017 is looking to be one of the best because Disney realized they dropped the ball last year and are making up for it. Are they though? R1 still had to undergo re-shoots this time last year and The Last Jedi was either still filming or close to the end of production and I think we all know that there was no way they’d show footage from that. With respect to this year’s celebration being a make up for last years… I don’t buy that so much. Even I remember when I was looking at the dates for celebration and the years corresponding to the new films that it made perfect sense to me to plan to only go to SW Celebrations held on the year of a planned Sequel Trilogy release because those would be the best ones.

Transitioning to Battlefront II, we know that with BF I they were pushing to get it released right before TFA so I’d imagine the first logical steps they went through were “what can we include to meet this deadline?” and of course that meant just making it a straight shooter with no time to develop campaigns. While I’m sure it could have been done given enough headway, I don’t remember when they started producing the game. Anyway, after the release of TFA and the ancillary novels the world was finally presented with 30 years of additional history in that galaxy far far away. I find it hard to believe that BF II wouldn’t have any campaigns including the new story points and factions we’ve learned of even if there wasn’t a massive outcry from the fans.

TLDR – I don’t think its the makers listening to the fans as much as it was just they business plan they decided to go with. If they were so clueless that they needed to be told by the world where to go then while that is a comforting thought, it also is a worrying one.

Either way… I think this will be the first of the new BF games I get. I’ve personally been intentionally waiting for FF XV and the FF VII remake to come out before investing in a PS4 since I’m a big fan of that series and the story. So I look forward to grabbing this later in the year.

It can be both. EA sent out surveys to owners of Battlefront, just like they recently did with Mass Effect Andromeda. Having worked at EA, they absolutely alter development priorities based on customer input and team leadership has gone on record saying that they’re incorporating feedback. Finally, there is a lot of scrutiny on this project especially after Battlefront and their other big ticket sci-fi franchise- Mass Effect Andromeda- did not meet fan expectations.

Yeah I think you’re right. More than likely it was a little of both, I think I lean more toward the idea that this was their general business plan to begin with and they used the fan feedback to further hone the plan so they could knock the next things out of the park. L

It’s hard to judge a game by a trailer of mostly cut scenes. But I like the idea of apparently a single-player storyline that starts after the Battle of Endor. There’s lots of good (and some bad) new canon in this era.
But I still get the feeling the prequel era will be underrepresented.

Had the same feeling in re: to prequel content. I mean great that Maul has apparently made the cut but I’m unconvinced until I see some Clone v CIS action.

As John says, it’s far too early to judge. Disney still minimizes the prequels in their marketing materials, but that doesn’t mean anything regarding the game’s content.

Since the heroes in Battlefront levels are locked and at least tangentially relevant to the environment they appear in, Maul’s presence (especially in his TPM outfit) implies there’s prequel-era gameplay.

My biggest hope is that they completely overhaul the vehicle flight mechanics. They were way too arcadey in the last game.

Oh man, the flight mechanics blow pox-ridden Gotals. I don’t mind arcadey flight control, but at least make it feel a LITTLE bit like you’re flying an aircraft. Previous-gen consoles had some pretty damned good airplane combat games (can’t find squat for current-gen consoles as far as that goes!) and even the rather spotty starfighter options in the old SW: Battlefront II handled better than in the Battlefront reboot.

Ideally, somebody will put out a Star Wars starfighter combat game along the lines of Rogue Squadron/Rogue Leader (or, preferably even X-Wing/TIE Figher/X-Wing Alliance) where we can get our space combat fix. But until then, yeah… is it too much to ask that the fighter combat elements of the new Battlefront games not completely suck?

I thought it was a shame that they dropped so many of the strong points from Battlefront II when they did the reboot. Those space battles were excellent, particularly the way you could land on and infiltrate enemy vessels and sabotage them from the inside. And yeah, the fact that you’d start on your own side’s capital ship and hop into a starfighter, bomber, etc. and fly out and join the battle made for a far more immersive experience.

They dropped almost everything that made those games immersive and like you were a part of the world rather than playing an arcade game. BF 1 and 2 played like you were thrown into the front lines of a battle, running for cover, taking strategically important points, and jumping into a nearby vehicle or turret. The new BF plays like Unreal, where nothing matters because it’s all a sport.

It was in no way a ground breaking or good game. If put in the same amount of content into those games, and didn’t have the Star Wars franchise associated with it, it would have been a 1/10 game on any review site.

Although it is more of a single player game imo. I can’t really imagine the same grand scaled battles with all the vehicles in a multiplayer experience. It would be incredibly imbalanced and the veteran players would eat the inexperienced ones alive…
I think EA Battlefront actually did a great job on balancig the game to a more multiplayer-based game.
