Gareth Edwards Talks Kyber Crystals + New Rogue One Clip About Chirrut and Baze!

It has been more than three months since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story finally was released to the masses and showed us just how the Rebels stole the plans to the Death Star. You would think that at this point, with a long and rigorous promotional tour, that Gareth Edwards would have revealed almost everything about the making of the film. Well you would be wrong, because with the release of the Rogue One Blu-Ray, we have some new information on one of my favorite parts of the movie, Jedha, and some lore behind it. It’s not a lot of earth-shattering information, but it’s cool nonetheless.

In what Edwards is calling his last promotional interview for the film, he tells Collider’s Steve Weintraub about the origins of the planet itself and where the kyber crystals came from.

“There’s some stuff we did in there that are visual clues to ideas that maybe no one would ever know. I’ll tell you one thing, and this is my last interview to do with Star Wars so this is a scoop (laughs), but it’s probably not as interesting as some of the other things we talked about. If you look at the establishing shot of Jedha from above, the layout of it is this giant, circular rock formation around where Jedha is—the idea was that there was a meteor impact that hit Jedha and it came at such a force that it was what created the Kyber Crystals at the center of that crate of impact. So Jedha is like this very unique place in the galaxy in that it’s got a very high density of Kyber Crystals, which is what the Jedi need for lightsabers. So it became this holy city as a result of that meteor impact. But that must’ve happened maybe millions of years ago. We tried to tell that story in the establishing shot, you see the circular formation and at the heart of it is Jedha city.”

It’s little details like this that make me love Star Wars. There’s so much love and thought that go into the tiniest details that make it feel like a living and breathing universe. Something as random as a meteor millions of years ago, helped make Jedha this holy place for the Jedi and an incredibly important part of the galaxy. Awesome stuff from Gareth Edwards! Take a look at the interview here.

That’s pretty cool. I think we were super lucky with Gareth Edwards, he’s a self starter. He made his first movie himself on a shoestring budget and he’s definitely an artist in his craft.

Now that is actually a pretty cool concept. Starts to remind me of real science fiction, which is always a good thing.

I did notice the circular ring around Jedha City, but had not made the leap to the reason for a higher density of kyber. Very cool!
