Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Officially Rated PG-13.

rogue-one-international-poster

On this week of “Well, duh!” stories, it’s officially been confirmed that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be PG-13 after a handful of “this film contains scenes that may be too intense for younger viewers” messages started to pop up in the TV Spots.

Be sure to click on the image to read the fine print – the descriptor is officially “Extended sequences of sci-fi violence and action”.

pg-13

So… Yeah. We basically said everything that we needed to say about this back when we reported that the film’s rating in Russia would likely translate to a PG-13 over here.

Anyway… Remember when we were all freaked out over the possibility that Disney was going to seriously water this movie down with the reshoots? Man, those were the days!

But is also means that the Darth Vader annihilation scene won’t be as graphic as some would like.

The scene is ROTS were Vader kills the separatist leaders and cuts Poogle the Leaser literally in half was pretty graphic . I’m sure we’ll see something good from Vader.

Blood is rarely seen in Star Wars films, so unless an Aqualish is chopped, there won’t be much gore.

If you’re talking about that “leak” from ages ago about how they toned down the Darth Vader fight… You were deceived. Re-reading the guy’s posts makes it abundantly clear that he was just spitballing. (For instance, he said that the “major weapons test” concerned AT-ATs and that they’d only find out about the Death Star after Jyn ditched the rest of the team; the marketing makes explicitly shows that the weapon is the Death Star and that the Rebel Alliance is aware of it from the start, and that in terms of the film’s chronology, they encounter it much earlier than the “leaker” suggested.)

Does that mean the scene hasn’t been watered down, or that was never a graphic Vader scene in the first place, hence no need to water it down?

Rumor has it that there is a Darth Vader action sequence that’s supposed to be more “brutal” than any of his scenes in the OT. If that’s true, then it’s not a matter of it being gory so much as it is a matter of being more violent than what you’d typically expect with a Star Wars film. Considering the “viewer discretion advised” warning at the end of a few of the advertisements, I think it’s safe to say that Disney let Lucasfilm do its own thing (which is what they’ve done with Marvel Studios) instead of dogmatically policing what content can be in the film.

          Aye, what Pomo said.

The best rumors to Vader doing anything awesome was that they had created Vader stunt suits.

I think it’s safe to assume that all Star Wars movies going forward will be rated PG-13.

Hence part of the reason for the “Well, duh!” note at the beginning. PG as a rating is on its way out for most tentpole films, with the only exceptions being animated.

With a few exceptions, of course (as you said). Zootopia and The Jungle Book were both rated PG, and they both made 900 – 1 billion dollars.

Right. But one of those was an animated movie and the other one was based on an animated movie with next to no risqué content in it. And they were also both Disney movies, so a “PG” rating was far from surprising in their cases.

The OT were PG, but the 80’s was extremely liberal when it came to the rating system.

The PG-13 rating was introduced in 1984, after all OT films were released.

Every SW film in the future will have this rating, unless the ratings system changes. You will not see another PG Star Wars, nor will you ever see an R.

Disney will never release an R-rated film. PG now has the reputation as being a children’s film, effectively replacing the G rating.

Of all the meaningless and stupid ratings in the MPAA’s absurd ratings system, PG-13 is the dumbest of all. PG-13 means “it’s ok for kids, but it’s not ok for kids”, essentially the most wishy-washy description imaginable. It’s a marketing ploy to encourage parents that it’s ok to take children AND to placate fans that want more “adult” content simultaneously.

I personally find the MPAA’s judgment calls to be condescending, childish and outright perverse. You can’t say “f*ck” more than once or you’ll get an R, you can’t show a breast or you’ll get an R….but feel free to decapitate people and gun down humans by the thousands.

I’ve got an idea: how about letting the parents figure it out for themselves instead of having a secretive ratings board babysit and play watchdogs for American morality?

Watch “This Film Is Not Yet Rated” to get a better idea of just how preposterous our entire ratings system is,

Sorry for that little rant, but seriously, ratings are idiotic and PG-13 is the worst of the bunch.

the nudity has to be tasteful…. because Titanic was also PG-13, which had a topless scene. It’s dumb….. but, whatever. lol

yeah, i forgot about Titanic…but it was also a $200 million movie, and i guarantee that played a role in it not being R…yet again proving ratings are all politics and insider b.s.

Then again, that was 20 years ago, when a film could still get a G rating instead of being rated for PG for things as mundane as “Scenes of peril” (which describes any film with a plot, by the way).

Just a teeny thing, but definitely second the call for people to see “This Film Not Yet Rated” – absolutely SCATHING, well argued take-down of the MPAA.
