lol… this always cracks me up. Crazy to think we have this kind of stuff aimed at adults now. I’m not complaining! I just remember when this was aimed more for kids. It’s interesting as times change and how adults are more and more allowed to keep enjoying this and not be looked at funny.

I’d throw in its probably because the kids that were advertised to when the OT came out are now adults. You could probably throw in the PT era kids like myself who are now in their early 20s. It’s dope how SW is now at a point to affect pretty much all generations.

Was going to write something similar – think it’s exactly this.

I mean PT-era fans are most definitely “shaving age” now.

It actually shows further evidence that George Lucas didn’t know who he was making the movies for. Originally it was for kids as he said, but everybody loved it and probably more adults loved it, even then.

Back on track though, the commercial looks fantastic. It looks to be movie quality. I’d be equally surprised if it was shots or wasn’t shots from the movie. So much grit and emotion, for a commercial.

Or that Lucas was doing was many of the best directors do – which is ultimately making the movie FOR HIMSELF.

An artist expressing their art & making the movie they want to make. It’s rare these days with mega studios, such as Disney, so fine-tuned/focus-grouped to death their “making a movie for” approach – not a colour, costume, race/ethnicity, name, story-beat, or merchandising opportunity missed when *designing* the product for the consumer.

Kids back then are adults now. There is plenty for both.

Yes obviously but my point was that it didn’t use to be that way. Society has changed… for the better IMO. Adults use to be forced to abandon such silly things when they got older. Look at marketing a couple of decades ago.

Now people realized they don’t have to abandon the things they liked as a kid. No one is really going to frown at it anymore. You can have your house decorated in these things and most either don’t care or are envious 😛

How do you shave a stormtrooper? And why do they need to shave anyway? They should have a wookie razor. lol

i dunno but when shop for razors next time I’ll be damned happy that they will be in Star Wars packaging.

Are there actual shots from the movie? The one with the U-Wing flying near the AT-ACTs is from the final trailer.

      I noticed that too.
Maybe that shot didn’t make it into the movie? That’s why they could use it here?

Not really as clever as the Jurassic World Barbasol promotion (I wish I had found those cans), but these packages look really classy.

Regardless, this is a very cool ad. I’m trying to figure out if these shots are actually from the movie. They look very familiar, but seeing the main guy shaving makes me think otherwise (unless they hired the extra for the ad?)

The cg scenes shown… aren’t they from the actual movie? I mean, the first two cgi scenes are from the trailer, and the hangar one seems similar to one we’ve already seen, but the important news is that it shows like there where multiple u-wings. So I assume Rogue One might have actually an “attack from a hidden rebel base” as said in the ep. IV crawl. I know this is just a gilette trailer, but I feel like it’s using movie-cgi.

I’m thinking these might be some new shots from the movie too. I mean, obviously shave-guy isn’t in Rogue One (although that’s as good a name as “Two Tubes”), but a lot of it matches pretty closely with shots we’ve already seen in the trailers. I especially love the shot of U-Wings leaving from Yavin–it mirrors the shot of the Falcon approaching Yavin in ANH.

Taking-off from Yavin & the ships landing on Scarif I think are from the movie, but it looks like they’ve added extra rebel ships- they dont look as professionally superimposed & I’m pretty sure it’s just the one U-Wing in Rogue One- at least that’s how it looks on the trailers. I’m sure that all the shots with people in are just for the advert, but they’ve obviously had full access to the wardrobe, props and filming sets to make the advert.

I agree. What I like that it would confirm a full-scake battle. It’s been since time that we didn’t get a full scale battle (I was hoping for having a such thing in episode VII).

Call me a downer but I always worry a little bit when a movie’s marketing is so intergrated with product placements. I know we’ll never see it in the actual movie but it sort of signals to me that the studio is trying to recoup as much of its money in products because they are unsure how it’ll do. Man of Steel, Ghostbusters, Independence Day, Suicide Squaf etc were all examples of this and they weren’t well received movies. I’m still very excited and I am going opening night but consider me skeptical. I did get a strong urge to shave though.

force awakens had a few of these too if i recall correctly. star wars is all about making money outside of the films… george’s legacy. 😉

It’s not about being worried about how the movie will do. It’s about maximizing every chance to make money. Companies will pay tons for this kind of rub from Star Wars. They did it, as Dux says below, with TFA and that was the biggest sure thing in Hollywood history.

If you don’t do this, you are leaving money on the table.

I wonder how involved lucas film gets with these adverts. The quality of this, the toy ads, and other ones they’ve made for both this and the Force Awakens have been just spot on. Do they get access to their full prop studio or what? They’re very well made.

Several people that have worked on the movies have been advising on the ads according to the last Coffee With Kenobi podcast – it covered a whole event on this small commercial.

I know, I know, I know it’s blasphemy, but I think the soundtrack of Rogue One will be one of the best yet.
