UPDATE! New Rogue One: A Star Wars Story International Trailer.
An Japanese variant of the final Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer has hit, delving into the past of protagonist Jyn Ero and giving us more insight on the insidious Death Star (along with showing off a little bit more of Darth Vader’s role in the movie through the shot shown above).
Oddly enough, we still don’t have a date for when tickets go on sale. Still, an abundance of cool shots in this trailer more than makes up for that.
UPDATE!
Some of the fellow staff at SWNN (Rieekan and Viral Hide) have uploaded screenshots from the trailer. Analysis time! (Some spoilers ahead.)
A young Jyn Erso is seen running from Orson Krennic’s shuttle. The way she moves her mouth makes it seem like she’s screaming something, though we don’t hear it. (It’ll probably be something that wouldn’t make sense within the context of a two-minute trailer.) This scene could take place before Orson lands (and Jyn is trying to warn her family) or afterward, once Jyn is told to run – the context provided suggests that it is probably the former, since the shuttle doesn’t seem to be chasing her directly.
A scene with Jyn and her mother, Lyra, followed by a shot of an older Jyn reflecting with the keepsake her mother gave her. Could it be a Kyber Crystal? It’d certainly explain the “Trust the Force.” line that immediately precedes Lyra giving Jyn the item, which is associated with Jedi and Sith alike due to it serving as the crucial component used to power a lightsaber. Kyber Crystals are also known to be what the Death Star’s superlaser is powered by, and given that Galen Erso is responsible for working on the Death Star’s superlaser, it’s quite possible that there are a few on Jyn’s homeworld…
Here we see a major action setpiece – the Death Star causing a mock-eclipse and landing a test shot on Jedha, which contextualizes what the whole “escape from the mountain of ash and debris” sequence in the previous trailer was. Obviously, the shot’s not as powerful as the blast that would destroy Alderaan from the Death Star. It can be presumed that the test shot either isn’t at full power at this point – since there might be a few bugs that the architects want to iron out – or the less likely option that Jedha is simply too resilent a planet to destroy in one blast. In any case, the poor people in that city below are going to feel the devastation of the weapon firsthand as the weapon is fired directly at them. (Perhaps this is what Baze Malbus’s “They destroyed our home!” line refers to, given that we see him and Chirrut Îmwe get introduced inside the city’s walls.)
And here we have Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, and Bodhi Rook fleeing for their lives as the planet starts to crumble (very much like a scene from the 2009 Star Trek reboot, even though J. J. Abrams isn’t involve with this movie).
A shot from the Eadu battle scene at night – which we see a bombing raid at the planet where it appears Galen is stationed at one point.
If the climate of the planet is directly indicated in this shot, then the Death Star’s construction place appears to be directly above Scarif, which is something that was implied with the movie’s posters. (And if it’s being constructed at that late a point in the movie, then it can be presumed that the test run on Jedha was not the laser being used at its full capacity.)
And to bookend this article, here’s that new shot of Darth Vader again. The way he’s gesturing (Force Choking in action?) makes it appear as though he’s speaking, though no dialogue is heard in the trailer. It seems very likely that we won’t hear James Earl Jones’s iconic voice again until the movie comes out. (And there’s still not any visual evidence of the rumored action sequence involving the character, which is probably something that’s best left unseen until the movie is actually out in theaters if the rumors are indeed true.)

YES. Was waiting for this. Omg im ready
This is the best trailer!
HOT
I definitely consider something in this trailer to be a spoiler- proceed with caution.
Which part? The part at the end or the sandstorm part?
I just thought the shot of the Death Star firing (now shown above) at Jedha could’ve been saved. Just my opinion though.
100% agree. we suspected thats what happened but we didn’t need to see it yet.
Yeah, I’m kinda surprised they showed it, but I was happy to have my suspicions confirmed that when we saw the U:Wing flying away from the massive sandstorm debris cloud in the 1st or 2nd teaser, it was the result of the Death Star firing.
Yeah, it totally shows who Rey’s father is. Not one shot of Finn in this trailer though.
Oh, totally. On that note, my favorite part was the scene of Darth Plagueis and Nuke Skywalker fist-bumping.
– Pomojema
we definitely know that rey’s mum is in this tho.
I died when Thrawn walked in.
I liked the Jar Jar cameo more.
Exactly. The scene of Darth Vader force-choking Jar-Jar was incredible.
Luke’s death was crazy, agreed.
The best part, though, was when Mara Jade, and young Snoke defeated the Yuuzhan Vong.
Yep. That’s my only gripe with this trailer. That was a little too much for me…but holy crap is that shot stunning.
Must.. resist.. urge.. to see more footage! Only one more month!
Take hold of this moment………or I will beat you with this stick.
I’m reading this at 10am, and am prepared to declare that the best line of today 🙂
Honestly…this is looking to become my favorite Star Wars movie after ANH and ESB 😀 Maybe. Kinda weird that Vader shot without context; as if he’s placed there just for you know shits’n’giggles
the fact that this a one off where they don’t have to hold anything back is going to back this movie special.
I’m thinking it could rank highly among the SW movies too, but at the same time there have been many films which looked awesome in the trailer but turned out to poo-do. Battlefield LA springs to mind, but then those films weren’t star wars.
Best trailer yet.
I liked the other ones, but this one gave me chills.
Same. First Rogue One trailer to give me chills.
literal goosebumps right now, hot dam! and was that the first glimpse we got of mama Urso?
ER MER GERD!!! THAT was the best trailer so far. Every shot is gorgeous. Those X-Wing shots look straight out of 77, in a good way. Everything about this is on point. I was at hype level 7/10 for this movie. Now I’m 10/10.
the attention to detail in this, right down to the sideburns on the imperial officers, is amazing.
Just saw the recent trailer before Doctor Strange last night..between the volume being up, seeing Vader on the big screen again, and the music..let’s just say I had trouble staying conscious.

Cannot contain my excitement.
Vader’s neck in that angle just doesn’t favour him as it cuts out from the rest of his body; excactly how Vader’s costume works but not precisely how a pressurized-outer-space suit would be.
I thought the same, it looks a little weird, definitely not the best Vader’s angle 🙂
His costume did odd things in all the movies. All depends on the angle.
That’s the first thing I noticed when I saw the pic. I’m almost positive that his helmet never pulled away at the neck like that in the OT films. Not while he was just standing there, anyway.
C’mon, Gareth… you mean ya didn’t notice THAT in the dailies? Oy… ;^)
Must…not…watch!

Oh damn, does Vader have arthritis now?
Looking forward to seeing this movie. Will be interesting to hear the non-John Williams musical score, and see what the tone is for the first spinoff.
either that or he’s very casually choking someone. 😉
“Oh damn, does Vader have arthritis now?”
LOL!! “I’m comin’ to join you, Elizabeth! This’s the BIG one!”
;^)
One of the best trailers yet.
Just amazing.
‘they cool it with Desta’ – my favorite line
I believe this is the first trailer where Death Star’s name is explicitly said. Funny, isn’t it?
This might sound weird, but was the name death star ever explicitly said by anyone in the OT?
standby alert “deathstar aproaching…
I know it was in Jedi.
“Deathstar plans are not in the main computer “
It was mentioned at the very beginning of “A New Hope.”

Thanks. I havent seen the movie in english for a long time. Need to rewatch asap…
The Death Star will be in range in five minutes…
This was a good question I had to strain to pull a quote. I grew up a prequel kid so it blew my mind when I realized the word Sith was never mentioned in the OT.
no, but it was often mentioned in the books, topps cards, etc. Like the clone wars, it was part of the original mystique.
Definitely in Return of the Jedi. Pretty sure during the briefing scene on Yavin but can’t be certain
“The death star plans are not in the main computer.” ANH
Lando says it in ROTJ, “That blast came from the Death Star.” and “We’ll last longer than we will against that Death Star.”
Some of these shots are just sick. Great cinematography so far.
Prediction: Vader kills Imwe
I do not see Vader making it out of this movie alive. :p
Vader is definitely choking Krennic, that’s the same scene when he walks to him
THAT WOULD BE AMAZING !
The movie should end like this:
The Rebels are on a ship, breathing a sigh of relief that they’ve escaped.
Vader arrives, slaughters everyone.
The end.
So Galen Erso’s research is probably into Kyber Crystals… that makes sense. I wonder what his backstory is. It would be awesome if somehow his Kyber Crystal research backstory came from working with the Jedi on lightsabers or something. I mean I know Jedi make their own “laser swords” but perhaps Galen was working to improve the tech for the Jedi or something neat like that.
His back story is covered in Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel.
Yes! This was the best trailer!
So glad they chose Rogue 1 as the first stand-alone movie.
Wild guess. Krennic has failed for the last time. Probably not even given much of a chance to speak as Vader strides in. They verbally spar… Krennic protests or says he can fix it… but Vader has had enough turns to leave and chokes him. Maybe leaving some menacing line as he walks away letting Krennic choke to death.
Well. Based on what happens to Alderaan, he does fix it. Right?
It’s probably more along the lines of.
“Where are the plans to the Death Star?”
“The Rebels…managed to steal the schematics during their att-GACKACKPHTGPERERERE”
That screenshot of Vader….somebody could have some photoshopping fun with it………..lol. Btw, loved the trailer, looking to buy Catalyst to read as well, intrigued with the Erso family already and their relationship with Krennic.
ThIs movie looks so much like a STAR WARS movie that it might become Extra (jar) jarring without a crawl and John William’s music. Minor niggle/worry
My god, just based on what we’re seeing in the trailers, the shot design, composition and photography looks stunning in this movie. The domestic full trailer left me a bit cold, but this was amazing. Keep trying to get a better look at the X-wings – for curiosity’s sake, it’s pretty clear that’s Red group, and Red leader front and center in that overhead shot, but can’t tell what other birds are there. Looking forward to seeing if they’ve given us the same kind of variation between the ships as ILM had in SW.
Memba Dath Vadaa memba. Memba da death staa, oh yeah I memba. Memba Mon Mawtha. Memba da webels, I membaaa…
…Memba Lenahd Cohen and Pwesident Obamaaa?
Yeah..we memba..
Memba da death staa again?
Much better than the other trailers.
I wonder if the reason why the sea-level is so high on Scarif is because of the gravity of the Death Star?
The trailer was cool, but… where are the aliens?
In the other trailers?
Killed off by the Empire.
The Empire built a big wall around Jeddah so they couldn’t get in.

xenomorph sith!
Practical FX !
The cinematography and visuals keeps looking better and better with each trailer. Love that shot of Jyn running with the shuttle passing overhead. The anticipation keeps building and cant wait to get my hands on Catalyst next week.
Pretty sure Vader is killing Jyn’s father right there.
Looks like they took some non-canon material to use here. In “Death Star”, which has been relegated to the “Legends” universe, the Station was constructed around Despayre, a lethal penal colony planet. Once the construction was complete, the Empire tested the super-laser by firing three low-yield shots that did not obliterate the planet but caused it to slowly destroy itself. Looks like the same happens to Jedah.
