UPDATE! New Rogue One: A Star Wars Story International Trailer.

rogue-one-14

An Japanese variant of the final Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer has hit, delving into the past of protagonist Jyn Ero and giving us more insight on the insidious Death Star (along with showing off a little bit more of Darth Vader’s role in the movie through the shot shown above).

Oddly enough, we still don’t have a date for when tickets go on sale. Still, an abundance of cool shots in this trailer more than makes up for that.

UPDATE!

Some of the fellow staff at SWNN (Rieekan and Viral Hide) have uploaded screenshots from the trailer. Analysis time! (Some spoilers ahead.)

rogue-one-01

A young Jyn Erso is seen running from Orson Krennic’s shuttle. The way she moves her mouth makes it seem like she’s screaming something, though we don’t hear it. (It’ll probably be something that wouldn’t make sense within the context of a two-minute trailer.) This scene could take place before Orson lands (and Jyn is trying to warn her family) or afterward, once Jyn is told to run – the context provided suggests that it is probably the former, since the shuttle doesn’t seem to be chasing her directly.

rogue-one-02

rogue-one-03

A scene with Jyn and her mother, Lyra, followed by a shot of an older Jyn reflecting with the keepsake her mother gave her. Could it be a Kyber Crystal? It’d certainly explain the “Trust the Force.” line that immediately precedes Lyra giving Jyn the item, which is associated with Jedi and Sith alike due to it serving as the crucial component used to power a lightsaber. Kyber Crystals are also known to be what the Death Star’s superlaser is powered by, and given that Galen Erso is responsible for working on the Death Star’s superlaser, it’s quite possible that there are a few on Jyn’s homeworld…

rogue-one-04

rogue-one-05

rogue-one-06

rogue-one-07

Here we see a major action setpiece – the Death Star causing a mock-eclipse and landing a test shot on Jedha, which contextualizes what the whole “escape from the mountain of ash and debris” sequence in the previous trailer was. Obviously, the shot’s not as powerful as the blast that would destroy Alderaan from the Death Star. It can be presumed that the test shot either isn’t at full power at this point – since there might be a few bugs that the architects want to iron out – or the less likely option that Jedha is simply too resilent a planet to destroy in one blast. In any case, the poor people in that city below are going to feel the devastation of the weapon firsthand as the weapon is fired directly at them. (Perhaps this is what Baze Malbus’s “They destroyed our home!” line refers to, given that we see him and Chirrut Îmwe get introduced inside the city’s walls.)

rogue-one-08

And here we have Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, and Bodhi Rook fleeing for their lives as the planet starts to crumble (very much like a scene from the 2009 Star Trek reboot, even though J. J. Abrams isn’t involve with this movie).

rogue-one-12

A shot from the Eadu battle scene at night – which we see a bombing raid at the planet where it appears Galen is stationed at one point.

rogue-one-13

If the climate of the planet is directly indicated in this shot, then the Death Star’s construction place appears to be directly above Scarif, which is something that was implied with the movie’s posters. (And if it’s being constructed at that late a point in the movie, then it can be presumed that the test run on Jedha was not the laser being used at its full capacity.)

rogue-one-14

And to bookend this article, here’s that new shot of Darth Vader again. The way he’s gesturing (Force Choking in action?) makes it appear as though he’s speaking, though no dialogue is heard in the trailer. It seems very likely that we won’t hear James Earl Jones’s iconic voice again until the movie comes out. (And there’s still not any visual evidence of the rumored action sequence involving the character, which is probably something that’s best left unseen until the movie is actually out in theaters if the rumors are indeed true.)

I just thought the shot of the Death Star firing (now shown above) at Jedha could’ve been saved. Just my opinion though.

Yeah, I’m kinda surprised they showed it, but I was happy to have my suspicions confirmed that when we saw the U:Wing flying away from the massive sandstorm debris cloud in the 1st or 2nd teaser, it was the result of the Death Star firing.

I’m thinking it could rank highly among the SW movies too, but at the same time there have been many films which looked awesome in the trailer but turned out to poo-do. Battlefield LA springs to mind, but then those films weren’t star wars.

Vader’s neck in that angle just doesn’t favour him as it cuts out from the rest of his body; excactly how Vader’s costume works but not precisely how a pressurized-outer-space suit would be.

So Galen Erso’s research is probably into Kyber Crystals… that makes sense. I wonder what his backstory is. It would be awesome if somehow his Kyber Crystal research backstory came from working with the Jedi on lightsabers or something. I mean I know Jedi make their own “laser swords” but perhaps Galen was working to improve the tech for the Jedi or something neat like that.

Wild guess. Krennic has failed for the last time. Probably not even given much of a chance to speak as Vader strides in. They verbally spar… Krennic protests or says he can fix it… but Vader has had enough turns to leave and chokes him. Maybe leaving some menacing line as he walks away letting Krennic choke to death.

Well. Based on what happens to Alderaan, he does fix it. Right?

It’s probably more along the lines of.

“Where are the plans to the Death Star?”

“The Rebels…managed to steal the schematics during their att-GACKACKPHTGPERERERE”

My god, just based on what we’re seeing in the trailers, the shot design, composition and photography looks stunning in this movie. The domestic full trailer left me a bit cold, but this was amazing. Keep trying to get a better look at the X-wings – for curiosity’s sake, it’s pretty clear that’s Red group, and Red leader front and center in that overhead shot, but can’t tell what other birds are there. Looking forward to seeing if they’ve given us the same kind of variation between the ships as ILM had in SW.

Looks like they took some non-canon material to use here. In “Death Star”, which has been relegated to the “Legends” universe, the Station was constructed around Despayre, a lethal penal colony planet. Once the construction was complete, the Empire tested the super-laser by firing three low-yield shots that did not obliterate the planet but caused it to slowly destroy itself. Looks like the same happens to Jedah.
