Recently, Donald Glover talked about being cast in the upcoming Han Solo movie on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and how it feels to become an active part of the Star Wars saga with his role as a young Lando Calrissian. He mentions his first Star Wars memory before getting into discussing his show Atlanta.

Really excited to see Donald and Alden as a younger version of Lando and Han in the upcoming Star Wars Story. I know a lot of fans aren’t happy with the idea but I think it will end up being really good and it will pleasantly surprise a lot of people who were originally overly critical of the movie.

Going off that, people need to keep in mind this is a George Lucas idea and a Lawrence Kasdan passion project to do a movie on Han ever since their time working on the originals. This isn’t Disney milking the franchise. This is a guy (Kasdan) finally getting an avenue to write the movie he’s been wanting to write.

Is some of it greed? Sure. Are there reasons to be concerned? Of course. Do we need this movie? Not really. But we’re getting it and there is no reason to be concerned yet considering the talent behind this movie.

It’s not “greed”. They are in the business of making money. That doesn’t equate to greed.

Greed has a negative connotation. It’s okay to be greedy at times. It’s these guys jobs to make as much money as possible, like you said. Just like any job, the goal is to make money. In my eyes, Disney and Lucasfilm are greedy, but it’s the kind of greed that’s good, the kind of greed that will lead them to make the best movie they possibly can because that’s how they will make money. If that makes any sense.

It is the idea of rehashing beloved characters that has most “hardcore” Star Wars fans on edge. For me personally, I liked a lot of the EU content surrounding the main characters from the original trilogy because they were good stories that were consistent with their characters. I know there was also a number of flops and disasters in the now Legends material, but all the ones I read were very enjoyable. The X-Wing series, anything by Timothy Zahn, etc.
If they do a good job of “telling the story” of Han and Lando, and the actors portray the characters as we know and love them (not caricatured or trying to put “their own spin” on them) I will enjoy the movie. Even if it does not live up to the level of enjoyment of the Original Trilogy, I can still appreciate it as a Star Wars film.
I think a huge portion of the diehard fanbase is waiting to see what Rogue One is like. If they can win us over with that, most will be far less critical of future projects. If if fails, the hesitancy will continue, and the critiques will worsen. I for one, am very excited about Rogue One from what I have seen so far. 🙂

Happy to be out of step with “hardcore fans” once again.

Nah. When I got online on theforce.net back in 2000 and saw how insane some fans tastes and theories were, i’ve always walked alone.

Never been on that site. What was it like?

Good and bad, like most things. Some people were more into the EU than the movies, which was like heresy to me. But I mostly enjoyed it.

Except the fan theories. Always a plague.
