Marvel Will Launch New Ongoing Star Wars Comic This December.

Although the Darth Vader comic is coming to its conclusion in October, Kieron Gillen isn’t going to stop writing comics for the Galaxy Far, Far Away anytime soon. It’s just been revealed that he’ll be writing a new, ongoing comic book series with its first issue set for release in the last month of this year.

From Newsarama:

Marvel Comics will launch a new Star Wars ongoing title in December – to be solicited as Star Wars: Classified. The series join the main Star Wars title and Star Wars: Poe Dameron as the line’s third ongoing, effectively replacing Darth Vader, which is scheduled to conclude later this year with its 25th issue.

And writing Star Wars: Classified is Darth Vader’s Kieron Gillen, joined by Uncanny Inhumans artist Kev Walker. Walker is primarily known for his Marvel Universe work, but did one lone Star Wars illustration – a cover – for Dark Horse’s Star Wars: Republic #55 back in 2003, featuring Obi-Wan and an army of clone troopers.

Marvel has not revealed the premise of Star Wars: Classified or its title is final or just a placeholder with its actual title to be revealed later.

With their report also comes an image showing list of cover artists for the title:

Whether or not “Classified” is a code-name or a part of the title is not clear at the present moment, but given that the logo appears to be a placeholder, it’s not likely that they’re keeping that title. The name of the work and its premise is most likely something that Marvel wants to reveal at a later point in time – NYCC being the earliest (and most likely) opportunity to make such and announcement.

Gillen also talked about the comic in a post on his Tumblr page, if only briefly:

UNANNOUNCED MARVEL THING – Two issues written. Inks arriving for the first issue, which are an utter delight. I think people will love it. It’s an ongoing.

It seems as though whatever title Gillen is working on is one that will be comparatively less serious than Darth Vader. Might it be a spin-off featuring recurring Darth Vader character Doctor Aphra, or something set in an entirely different era altogether? Hopefully, we won’t have too long to wait for an answer.

I know it’s a stretch, seeing that Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm loves the OT, but I’m hoping they will expand to new eras and timelines. If we can’t get an Old Republic movie, I wish we can at least get a comic chronicling some events and characters of that time.

I really wouldn’t expect them to do that for a while – as long as BioWare is still doing their own thing, I don’t expect to see any canonical story set in that era.

It won’t be a while until we get actual Old Republic stuff, if we even do. I hope we do because there is a lot of potential there.

The reason I say this is because Pablo mentioned something about the Old Republic not being what he’d envision it being and also that their Lucasfilm/ILM artists would need to redo everything that we are used to with TOR/KOTOR/Tales of the Old Republic.

So to me, this means that it will be a while until we see anything Old Republic related. The soonest would probably be once Lucasfilm finishes the sequel trilogy. So, that would mean 2020 at the earliest.

    Make KYLO REN COMIC!!!!!

Now THAT is something I would pay good money for! A knights of Ren comic featuring kylo or even a series about a newly fallen kylo would be an instant buy from me. It would be a challenge not to includ episode 8 spoilers in such a run, but I think that would be a really rich source of narrative.

Yes I feel like they could do it. It can show how Kylo got cadets helmet and made his light saber and joined the Knights of Ren with snoke. Also show some first order and resistance stuff on the side. I really want a story about that

Don’t count on it until after the ST is finished.

i hoping for something related to the ST, but since its coming out in december it makes me think rogue one related.

That it’s an ongoing title and not a limited one suggests, to me, that it has nothing to do with Rogue One.

I’m getting a little burned out on the current timeline so I hope it takes place during a different period.

yeah, I’d say the gap from II to III is covered pretty well as well as the gap between III and IV and the gap between iV and V.
But I’d love to see more stuff pre I, or between V and VI or VI and VII. They are slowly filling in the gaps, but I’m with you on being burnt out on the Circa ANH stories

Between I and II would be great imo, Obi-Wan & Anakin was a fun read.

“set for release in the last month of this year.”

BB-8 did say it first. Maybe that indicates we’ll be getting an “Adventures of BB-8” comic. Lol.

I really want material set in a new time period. Since it’s barely been mentioned in canon there’s no point re-writing pre-republic Jedi/Sith conflict. I hope they come up with a new backstory and tell it in a comic like this. The Darth Vader comic is fucking brilliant so I’m glad Kieron Gillen is sticking around.

Yes! That’s what I said too. A Kylo and knights of Ren comic showing his downfall and how they killed lukes Jedi. We need a story set between VI-VII.

I would love to see a Luke/Ben Solo comic but I am sure it is going to be explored in the films first.

I always saw that as being a potential animated series, they also wouldn’t have to worry about recasting a younger Luke.

Would love for that to be a successor of Rebels when that ends in a season or two.

They need to cancel the Poe comic. There’s just nothing there to tell. I mean, if they couldn’t even make it past 25 with Vader, what do they think Poe can do?

Glad to see the writing still involved in the SW galaxy, though.

Yeah, while I’m enjoying Poe comic I don’t think there’s a lot of story to tell. I mean, he was recruited by Leia (as seen in Before the Awakening) to help her find Luke, and that’s what Poe is doing, but what after? Will they span his story after TFA?

      • September 21, 2016 at 5:52 am

I already feel like they are over doing it with poe by making it ongoing. A few stealth missions are fine but they need to keep in mind there wasnt a lot of action between the first order and the republic prior to TFA. In facf, if you watch the beginning of TFA you can really see the shock on poe’s face when he gets on board the star destroyer and sees just how massive an operation it is. I always thought that was a neat angle, that the republic knew about the First Order but didnt realize how massive and threatening it had become.

Also, i just dont think the time period between the end of jedi and beginning of TFA is very interesting. Unless they throw some major galactic event – like a yuuzhan vong invasion or something – into the mix – it sounds pretty boring.
