Is there still time to cancel the Han Solo movie and make this instead?

I don’t know why, but from everything we’ve heard I have the feeling that Han Solo will be an awesome addition to the Star Wars franchise that we all will respect and greet. 🙂

Agree with you. I’m bummed they chose Han Solo story.
About the only way I could imagine doing it *right*, is many years from now when the cast, or at least Solo, can be 100% computer generated & precisely MATCH a younger Harrison Ford (from computer learning of 3D models generated from the many films we have Ford in, to synthesize the character & voice perfectly) – Ford IS Han Solo & we don’t need another one.

Whilst I also agree that we don’t need EVERYTHING explained, leave some mystery imagination, don’t show us: Han meeting/joining Chewie/Lando, winning Falcon, some past grudge with Greedo, Kessel Run, etc etc… IF they could do a perfect Han Solo “actor” (presentation) – give us some interesting story & supporting characters & not back-filled fan service.

There’s so much to mine from the SW universe, to come up with unique tales & characters – we don’t need all-Skywalker / all-Jedi & “already establsihed” characters (read: Study considers low risk, fanatic fan service will guarantee base w/o quality acting/writing).
Example: I enjoy the Rebels show, never watched all of Clone Wars series (like season 1 & few ep of 2) ….but did we have to have a bunch of Force sensitives/Jedi & The Force so on display?

          Han Solo film vs options
If they HAD to do a back-story of an existing character, I think a Obi-Wan story with Ewan McGregor between Ep 3 & 4 would’ve been better.

Heck, with Disney behind everything, I’m worried that after this latest trilogy completes & these 1st 3x “SW story” films, they’re gonna wind up casting some young actress to play some “early years Princess Leia.”
          Seriously would not surprise me.
Studio exec logic: Existing character (no risk/repeat), young actress (youth market), obviously female (that’s great-need more female SW fans), guaranteed audience from fanatic fans who “must see” a Leia story…. would probably leave out a metal bikini scene unless they felt it would increase take.
          Ugh

maul shows up on tatoonie. “this time i got you kenobi.” obi-wan shakes his head wearily. “come on maul, we’re both old men now. how many times do i need to dismember you?” “until i finally beat you.” “but you’re just a head on a robot body now…” “silence! its all i need.” obi-wan sighs. “fine, lets get it over with. i got a kid to creep on- i mean watch over…”

^easy fix. Make Obi Wan Kenobi slightly older than he appeared in Rebels. That way he can still fight, and so can Maul (as apparent in Rebels season 2 conclusion.)

I’m sure they could make it work. What I wrote was more of a spoof. 😉

Lol, yes. Thats also similar to how he left Anakin. He just needs to learn the fatality code to stop these people from coming back. 😉

Lesson learned, discussions of dark side users:
“Do NOT mess with Obi-Wan! Dude is straight-up gangster & will cut you bad!
Also… do NOT get in a bar fight with him!”
            😉

Seriously think he’s got the highest amputational-ratio of any Jedi in the films.

Idk, i think everyone was getting sliced in the prequels. Even Yoda decapitated a couple clones. Such wonderful kids films. 😉

Yeah…lots of slice & dice in prequels.

            Still, it is a light-saber.
I remember being wowed in ANH back in 1977, as a kid, sharing w/my friends “that old knight with his futuristic weapon just slice through those guys in a bar!” hehe

OT – obviously not quite like action from PT, but still:

Ep4 We had bloody amputations & Darth “slice through” Ben
Ep5 Luke taking off a chump-of-wampa, cutting Vader’s head off in cave, & losing his own hand at Cloud City
Ep6 Fairly tame compared to 4&5 but we still got some serious saber wielding & poor Darth/Anakin lost limb (yet again!)

It is funny with all that rather intense violence dating back… people (many parents) still imagine SW as only “kids films”.

oh definitely, thats what makes the lightsaber so cool. though it is a bit ironic that the more “civilized” weapon and group seem to have the more brutal results. 😉

also, whats funny about the whole “kids films” thing is that i read a quote earlier from rick mccullum back in the day about how jar jar was the second most popular character among their “target demographic”. while most people over age 14 hated him. i’m still baffled how you try to merge slap stick humor with adult violence and themes and package it mainly for kids.

            Agree completely.
I’d also almost referenced “civilized weapon” myself, pondering the on-screen results of their use.

            McCallum –
Yeah, was routinely disappointed by him. Not to segue here too far, but I’ve toyed with the suspicion of his being a not-overly-talented sycophant of Lucas who, if anything, contributed to (“enabled”?) many of the bad ideas that made it into the prequels: slap-stick, farting/poop gags & all that. If Lucas had someone else beside him, challenging him, reining him in, the PT might’ve turned out much better.

            “kids movie” –
It’s also interesting to note, it seems, that the definition of acceptable “kids movie” has morphed over the years. Apparently, frequently, dumbing-down and/or *lightening*/eliminating inclusion of darker subject matters (dark elements/themes, violence, etc).
Not commenting here on whether it’s for the good / bad, but it was interesting how a few decades ago a “kids movie” COULD include on-screen/story elements that wouldn’t happen today.
Somewhat related, when envelopes continued to be pushed, the PG-13 rating arose in the states.

Dating myself here, but I was “less than 10yo” when I saw ANH in theatres. And, hindsight, I feel that it was age appropriate for me – yet contained people shot/”blown away”, diced-up/bloody limb on ground (tho’ not human), and the had emotional+tragic death of important character.

            Jar Jar –
I do remember taking my “little brother” to TPM & noting that he did love Jar Jar, as well my nieces/nephews. Was surprised by that, considering how myself & other adult fans I knew weren’t exactly in love with the character (degrees of like/dislike/toleration).
However, and contrasting, *kids* of same age back in 1977 loved R2/3PO….but the adults did too!
[ stop here to avoid further segue into prequel trilogy discussion… ]

Really want to like this podcast but that guy has the most piercing whining voice I think I’ve ever heard. Made worse by the fact he’s an insufferable know it all. Won’t leave you guys a bad review but it’s a big let down on a sometimes enjoyable podcast.

I realize that Maul is *alive* (at least survived cut in half) in official (outside of movies) canon.
As much as I would love to see an Obi-Wan stand-alone film, I just hope they don’t introduce Maul back into the movies’ canon material.
    Maybe in Rebels? Books?

He’s already back in Rebels as of the end of S2.

        Understood Maul’s in Rebels.

I was referring to the article’s topic:
“what we would want out of a Kenobi/Maul rematch”

Just that I don’t want to see that imaginary re-match as canon in film – Rebels/Books, fine.
For the “average movie-goer” – let Maul remain in 2x pieces in bottom of shaft. 😉

[Side note: will be interesting to see where Season 3 goes w/Maul & Ezra’s dark side temptation]
