K-2SOTo paraphrase C-3PO – “Teasers advertising teasers. How perverse!” A new trailer teaser for the teaser trailer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has made its way online, featuring a shot of the U-wing lifting off and several close-ups of the movie’s cast.

For some reason, the U-Wing looks like a great bridge from the ship-architecture of the PT and the OT. I can’t pinpoint why, but for some reason it looks like a nice amalgamation.

Yeah, now that you mention it, there IS something in the profile of the ship that says “Naboo cruiser” to me too. The cockpit has similar placement to the little ship Anakin and Padme took in AotC? The big, bulbous engines kinda feel a bit like a cross between classic XW engines and the big engines on the Republic ships (TPM courier, AotC refugee liner, TPM Senate shuttle I’m thinking about here).

Zam Wesell’s ship and the interceptors that Anikan and Obi Wan fly in ROTS both have a cleft that leads to the cockpit similar to the U-Wing with its foils in the forward position. Nothing else in the Star Wars universe comes to mind that shares this design feature.

That’s what I was thinking as well. And the CGI looks more PT. Not a fan right now but hoping they clean it up a little. Seems out of place on the landscape.

I’m sure we’ll all make it an issue and they’ brush up on final render prior to December.

No, I see what you’re talking about. I wouldn’t worry about it… there are probably a ton of SFX shots that haven’t been completely finished yet. Lighting effects look like maybe they’re not complete.

Yeah it looks terrible… though if you compare FO rally from TFA teaser 2 vs. Trailer, the giant FO flag had *much* better rendering in the trailer. Someone on the cantina forum figured it out… I’d give credit if I knew who it was… that’s impressive spotting.

So far the new droid looks pretty good though for CGI… though that’s a brief shot… hope to see more on Thursday!

I’m a representational artist so I’m very picky when things don’t look real.

I doubt much of anything looks real to you in any SW movie, then.

That depends. The OT & some PT models look very real if there are no comparable objects that might give the scale away.

For example… old movies that have boat models always looked fake because the waves dwarf anything you’d see in real life… literally looks like a toy in a bathtub sometimes (Das boot is a good example of that).

Something like the Millenium Falcon flying through the stars looks real because there is nothing to imply it isn’t real. Star Destroyers looked very good as well… not unless if you look at a still shot of one can you make out features that give away it’s actual scale.

Even way back in 2001 (1969 film?) the models still look very real. The Nolan film Interstellar used models that looked amazing, even on 70mm IMAX projection which I saw, the models even when zoomed up close were very convincing.

So you are basically saying they don’t have the skills to get this right or should have used a miniature?

No, as I said in my earlier comment, sometimes trailers contain early renderings… like the comparison of the FO rally flag (look at it in Teaser 1, then compare to teaser 2, the second rendering is far more realistic). All I think is that this is an early rendering, they will polish it up for the final shot. But if it’s a final shot, then I’d be disappointed.

Though I do think there was still too many rendered ships in TFA… there were a lot of shots that I think could have benefited from the use of models. Some specific examples would include the downed star destroyers on Jakku, or some of the in flight X wings).

Especially as far as the Star Destroyers go… the only exception are the 3D shot of the Star Destroyer (the clip right before Kylo talks to vader’s mask… that shot required Digital because you can set the parameters much more accurately to tailor an immersive 3D experience, where as just filming a model in 2D & post converting to 3D would haven’t been as immersive). And due to the nature of the shot (zooming from the bottom of the ship to the top) it would have required a giant model.

Not just you, felt the same way watching it. However, I noticed in one of the other olympic adverts that the shot of Krennic’s ship blowing up looked much better than it did in the first trailer. So yea, probably still work to be done. Nothing to fret.

The cgi on the U-Wing is better than the cgi on the first teaser’s AT-ACT. It looks pretty good to me however, I can see why some people might not be happy with it.

Now it looks like they improved the AT-ACT cgi. I’m sure they will work a little bit more on all of the cgi by the time the movie releases. If there’s anything that Star Wars doesn’t scimp on, it’s cgi lol

Mate it does look better than TFA. TFA was boring, liked loads about it, but good film overall? nah, not if you’re being honest. My opinion, different to arguing, is that all things considered so far from everything I’ve soaked up, like you probs have too, is that signs are it’s going to be a better film than TFA.
