Daisy Ridley Practices Swordplay While TR8-T0R Fumbles.

Angry Rey

A brief behind-the-scenes look at Daisy Ridley practicing a bit of swordplay takes a turn to the unexpectedly funny when her instructor Liang Yang (who played FN-2199/TR-8R) falls over backward while filming her.

Aside from the laugh that this provides, this also lets us know that filming for one of Rey’s lightsaber scenes has either recently happened or will soon happen – roughly two months into production, for frame of reference. If Episode VIII ends up having a similar production cycle as The Force Awakens, that would suggest that filming for the movie will wrap up by September or October, and that roughly a quarter of the movie has been filmed so far. The shooting schedule for the movie (jumping from Ireland to Croatia and back) suggests that the movie isn’t being filmed in-sequence, so it ought to be interesting to see what information leaks out about the other scenes shot on location. We’ll be sure to cover more on this subject and others in this week’s Star Wars social media recap.

Good to see that Rey’s lightsaber technique is going to improve dramatically, because her fighting stile in TFA WAS bad, contrary to what the Internet believes.

i think her poor LS mastering in 7 was intended. but the final moves before throwing Kylo Ren on the ground were well executed.

I know that. However, many people that rush in and say that Rey is a Mary Sue don’t seem to notice her lack of lightsaber prowess.

It’s more the fact that she beat a trained force wielder with her shoddy skills. My major gripe in the film is not that she is a Mary Sue, but how much of one she is. If you compare her to Gary Stu Anakin from The Phantom Menace, you see that 9 year old Anakin doesn’t solve every problem in the film, whereas Rey does.

I think he was comparing Anakin in ep 1 with Rey in ep 7? Just a reminder… Anakin (a 9 year old kid, or was it 8?) destroys the core of the enemy’s ship…

I think it makes much more sense how Rey advances and I think the force is guiding her since she touched Luke’s lightsaber.

You can like the explanation or not but at least they gave some…

That’s not how the Force works!

I think Anaking was guided by the force… Just because thinking he made it “by accident” is even worse…

The lightsaber didn’t gave Rey force powers… The force spoke to her throught it, the same way you can find it on a stone, trees or everywhere else.

I don’t know how the force works, but for sure Yoda didn’t know either when he stated Luke was too old to be trained, or Darth Vader would never come back to the light side.

I think there are no good or wrong statements when talking about the force just as there aren’t when talking about some other philosophical or religious subjects in real life.

As far as i know and saw from him in duel, he’s more an assassin than a swordmaster. it was maybe his first duel against Rey. The way he killed his father and the unknow Jedi from Rey’s vision is enough to understand the guy is an evil bastard. for me Kylo Ren as no honor. i think Rey is winning the duel because at the moment where their lightsabers are locked, she close her eyes and let the Force guide his arm.

A trained Force user that was bleeding out. We saw multiple times the power of Chewie’s bowcaster throughout the film, and while Kylo took the hit without flying like a stormtrooper, he took a hit from a very powerful weapon. He wasn’t fighting at 100%.

Also the reason she knows the Falcon better than Han – Han had been shot with a bowcaster – speaks every language of every character in the film, including droids she’s never met before – they were all shot with a bowcaster – can outfly a squad of fighter pilots – all of them? shot with bowcasters – instinctively knows her way around the inner workings of a top secret base – SKB? Yep, it was shot with a bowcaster – why she spontaeously developed fully-fledged force powers – TK Daniel Craig? Bowcaster, Kylo? Well, premonition of bowcasters – and why everyone loves her unconditionally – Leia, Chewie, Finn, Kylo, Han? Bowcaster, bowcaster, bowcaster, bowcaster, aaaaaand bowcaster.

She sneaks around, climbing, jumping, hiding just because she was used to do so scavenging parts from ships. Accomodated people cannot understand it… But try to have such a hard life in desert for so long… Is not that difficult to believe.

Languages… Well, about droids first: I am a developer myself… I know many programming languages, and I’m not a genious… Why is so hard to believe someone who has spent all her childhood with ships and technology surrounding her and playing/working on it, is capable of learning how to communicate with it?

Chewbacca… The problem would be the same on any previous movies, he just roars… He doesn’t really speak for sure… So this complaint could be said on earlier episodes as well. But I always asumed it was a mistake on dessigning the character, he in real speaks and his language/dialect can be common to many other alien forms in the galaxy. Jakku seems a place where you could find lots of aliens and need to communicate with them. Exactly the same way some of them speak english and it wasn’t their mother tongue… Right?

Anyway… Fire and sound on space… Isn’t it unreal? But this is a sci fi movie, a conjeture, a fantasy… Nothing will be fully coherent and to enjoy these movies or stories you need to be opened to this.

Then again, Luke might just not have a double-bladed lightsaber lying around as these were not very common among the Jedi. I’m still holding out hope that when she goes to constructing her own that we’ll see her wielding a saber staff.

Think this is just a training session. The concept art for Episode VIII clearly has Rey with her trusted staff, the weapon seems ingrained in her character’s identity. Wouldn’t write off Rey using some kind of double-bladed lightsaber at some point in the trilogy, especially as her trainer is a wushu master (Ray Park is a wushu practitioner).

Are we returning to the twirly style of lightsaber fighting from the prequels?

    • April 26, 2016 at 5:11 pm

Hopefully a mixture to connect all the films. It was said that the prequels were the Jedi in their prime, with Vader’s prosthetics hindering his ability with a lightsaber. That being said Luke should of evolved his style, so as /i said something in-between would be good.

Actually Mark Hamill stated that he and his trainer for the Original Trilogy tried to convince George Lucas to incorporate that style into ESB and RotJ. He vetoed of course stating that “Lightsabers were really heavy like Excalibur”. Of course he used it in the Prequels as his own idea… 🙂

“Lightsabers were really heavy like Excalibur”.- brilliant! I’ve a prop replica and often imagine what it would be like to wield considering the ‘light/plasma’ or whatever, isn’t going to really effect the weight. Not having the balance of a sword, the handle makes it quite weird to wield on its own, but its not going to have the weight of a sword like Excalibur.
