does anyone else find Maz to be one of the least compelling characters of the star wars saga? I am so glad that they cut scenes with Maz for the final cut. They should have cut her completely out of the movie

I think she is precisely because they cut too much scenes with her.

I liked her, much more Dexter from AOTC. She has a very beautiful design, and as a “plot character” is at least witty.

      No.
Grievous, Windu, Panaka, Dexter Jettster, Jocasta Nu, Boss Nass… Not compelling ones…

I find this one even better: “Coruscant. The entire planet is a giant city.” – DUH! We have eyes too, you know.

Captain Obvious and Master of Exposition in one. Gotta admire the man.

I have to say that the character was strangely under-utilized. If she was supposed to be the new Yoda, she must be granted more than just a few minutes of screentime. Apparently very much of her story was cut, including a scene where she uses the Force against the stormtroopers. In fact I feel the entire movie suffers from brutal cuts that remove essential exposition and character development.

But why have a non-jedi-force-user, who knows Han Solo, when we know Han Solo has been from one side of the galaxy to the other and he’s seen a lot of things… but doesn’t know of Maz’s “abilities” or even her “wisdom”? Having her isn’t building upon any unanswered questions or lore from previous movies nor does it move the story forward. Better, just a simple “Dexter” character who’s obtained this ancient “relic” that draws Rey through it’s own “force” connection. A Dexter-like Maz would play much better than a Maz-yoda peering into Rey’s eyes.

Because she never brought up her force ability when the Empire was in power.

This point exactly. The only way this would work is if we assumed Han met her after the OT. But it just seems a bit of a stretch. And the fact that the creature was CGI really pissed me off. They put so much into great looking physical creatures and then 2 of the main characters of the story ended up as obvious CGI

“Diminutive, extremely old Force-sensitive alien bursting with wisdom who gives advice to the protagorist” — how many Star Wars characters from the movies fit that description? I can think of exactly two. One has funny glasses and one has funny grammar.

Exactly. That’s an assumption that the fans drummed up from somewhere. When those expectations didn’t pan out, a lot of them faulted the movie. A lot of these people are liked kindergartners. She was her own character who served a specific purpose in the movie.

Because there did need to be someone other than Han to tell her that its ok to let the Force guide her.

Or else it would just be her figuring everything out.

No, I find Jar Jar to be the most annoying and least compelling Star Wars character.

Markan has a point, there is some vital development of Rey’s character that goes on because of Maz’s presence.

Now, if the argument is that Maz was underutilized, I will agree with that.

Yeah.. What happened to the supposed scene of her deconstructing a lightsabre. I thought we would be finding Kyber Crystals and all sorts… I expected more to be added to the mythology of Star Wars by TFA . Maz could have brought a lot of that.. let’s hope in EP VIII she has more of a reason to be there.

      Other than

      *retrieving Luke’s lightsaber
      *guiding both Finn and Rey
      *harboring our heroes
*giving a cool lesson on the force
*and she looked cool, like Yoda

      But other than that nothing.

*we don’t know that she retrieved it…those were deleted scenes.
*did she really guide them???seems the force was guiding them without her
*they could have holed up anywhere
*what lesson? she did nothing with the force except in a deleted scene.
        *meh…

think about it, you could have completely taken her out of the movie and introduced the “lost” saber in numerous ways. Still had the heroes show up at this watering hole and had the same impact. I’d rather had an old Boba running the place as a half cyborg, and when the first order arrived give him a kick ass moment. but, that’s just me.

Yep, that would be badass. Hell, we got old Han. Just think an old cyborg running the castle and not knowing who he is until the FO attack, and he puts on the helmet and goes to blowing their shit up! I get chills at the thought!

I said that because he/she complains about TFA’s fan service all the time. And then she wants to inject her own. Tells you a bit about her.

        Except she didn’t

*retrieve Luke’s lightsaber. Well, maybe, who knows if she did. It’s an interesting story though, boy howdy, you can be sure of that! Which I’m not going to tell you.
*guide Finn or Rey. Unless you mean she ‘guided’ Finn to a table where he could catch a flight to the Outer Rim.
*Harbor out heroes for any longer than it took for them to show up, ask for and be denied her help, and the FO to attack
*Look cool. She looked like BBQ’d iguana.

I agree that maybe she didn’t need to be in the movie, but I find it a lot more interesting to have more characters from all over the galaxy that inererweave themselves into the larger story. That’s what Star Wars kinda does, it gives you lots of different genres, personalities, etc, and combined them into one big story and if you want to know more, you read the books, comics, play the video games, etc. That’s why I find Star Wars so interesting.
