This episode was good becase it’s nice.
This episode was bad because it’s our SIXTH filler episode in a row, and the next few sound like they might be more filler as well.

All in all, my opinion of this episode and this season (so far):
    Meh.

How can you honestly call this episode filler? That is just not true here.

What WASN’T filler about it? It literally had NO bearing on the overall story of Rebels. You could skip from the last episode to the next one and not miss anything of importance! I enjoyed the character development, but this episode did nothing for the plot (and vague details about Geonosis and Lasan don’t count).

Yes it has bearing on the overall story. Both Kallus and Zeb are very representative of the two opposing forces, and in this episode they’ve the chance to take a closer look at one another, and even work together. It shows exactly what’s wrong with the Empire. When Zeb leaves the cold planet he’s greeted warmly by friends, a family. No one even cares if Kallus made it out alive, which ends in an interesting way with him sitting in his room, rethinking what he knows of the empire. He even openly states the Lasat genocide was not what he expected the empire to do.

That is called character development. The plot of the episode was still filler. I don’t see any Rebel bases being established, any Jedi Temple Guards being seen, or any Ezras turning to the Dark Side.

I let go of an Ezra in the bathroom a few hours ago, and that was a little on the dark side….

That you want something else from episode doesn’t make that episode filler.
And crucial character development is plot of the episode.

Well said! People tend to criticize story based on their preferences, not on the actual content. So long as we learn more of the Empire and the Rebels, this episode did push the overall plot forward!

Tbh, the character development wasn’t that crucial. Couldn’t Kallus have been developed in an episode that actually moved the plot along.

I remember thinking last season it would be cool if Kallus turned on the Empire and joined the rebellion, and now it looks like that may happen. He’s a cool character and I’m glad they’re developing him more…really solid episode.

in the moment, this episode was insanely predictable. in the LONG run, this episode not only has humanized one of the main villains of rebels, but now kallus CLEARLY owes zeb a life debt. i have a feeling this will come into play during the finale.. great material, but let’s get to the sith temple/holocron/jedi temple guards/darth maul yumminess.. we’re all anxious for it!!

Another great episode. It was fun watching two enemies confront a common adversity. We learned a bit more about agent Kallus and Zeb. Once again, I don’t understand complaints from others users about this ep. being a “filler”. It deals with themes which tie into the overall rebellion theme beautifully. Well written dialogues and fun action. Loved it.

I really liked this episode! I don’t understand how people can call this “filler”.
The previous episodes were kinda filler-y and didn’t add that much of character development – although it did explore some new things – but this episode was really good and it really added another dimension to Agent Kallus. I’m very interested in seeing where this will go from here.

I don’t like the idea of Kallus being fully redeemed. He’s a war criminal like Tarkin that committed genocide and not merely a Clone Wars vet like Dodonna who got drafted or someone who merely took responsibility for another person’s failures like Lorth Needa.

Actually, if you watch the episode, Kallus IS someone who simply took credit for someone else’s actions. They explicitly state that Kallus was not responsible for the genocide of the Lasat.

A retcon that would make Lucas proud. Even still, There are nearly a dozen Imperial traitors in the flms alone. I’d rather see a Rebel go traitor which is novel by comparison.

I don’t understand how anyone can say about this episode that it is filler.

This episode fundamentally changed what we think about one of the antagonist.

And this one episode could started storyline which will span several seasons.

As i see it, never understatement officer who started ask questions.

I agree that some of the recent episodes have been filler-y, but as with season 1, I’m sure many of the seemingly unrelated plot strands will come together in the end.

This episode though I felt may have a big impact, not only on Rebels, but maybe on Rogue One too. It;’s fairly obvious what was being constructed above Geonosis – maybe we’ll be going back here in RO?

I actually believe that no, we won’t go back there. But it means that they possibly moved DS-1’s location to somewhere else. That means that the novel Tarkin’s final lines take place at the same time as the rest, around a decade earlier.

IMO the term “filler” does not apply to this episode. Methinks this one is going to have long-game ramifications on the series. I’m excited about it.

A plot seen too many times in and out of the genre. It bored me. Plus it’s frustrating how easily Khallus seems to have had a change of heart. Obvious he’s going to become a rebel now.

I’m still surprised people can’t understand how quickly people can change their mind about something. You also have to look a bit further than just that, there are some story points in this episode that you have either missed or are not recalling right now.

Um, no. There aren’t. I just didn’t care for the core plot. It’s been done to death. That’s doesn’t mean I missed the plot thread build up to the future.

Too many fans hear one opinion and then derive another from it which they then accuse the other person of.

My response was 100% in regards to “Plus it’s frustrating how easily Khallus seems to have had a change of heart. Obvious he’s going to become a rebel now.” – ignore anything related to the first two sentences, nothing I wrote was in response to that. So none of the reasoning behind Kallus reconsidering his life was apparent to you, even though one event that may have had a major impact on his life & life choices was revealed in this episode for the first time, after which this was built upon?

I understand the disappointment some are feeling with the current season of Rebels. IMO, showing us that spoilery trailer several weeks ago was the worst thing that Disney marketing could have done for the show. From his comments, it was clear that Filoni wasn’t thrilled about the decision to reveal it either. The expectations set by that trailer have negatively affected adult reception of the second half of season 2, and that has been most unfortunate. I say “adult reception” because my seven-year-old could care less about the trailer as he is just enjoying every episode as they come out on their own merit.

Expectations and familiar plot devices aside, I really enjoyed this episode. Have I seen the plot played out multiple times before? Certainly. But for this episode of Rebels, it worked really well for me, and I really enjoyed getting to know a different side of Kallus. I hope he doesn’t jump ship on the Empire immediately, as I would like to see him endure a little more emotional conflict in future episodes, which I think will add dimension and depth to his character.

This episode has huge ramifications for the show’s future direction and I can’t wait to see where it goes. But unlike some fans of the show who are tired of waiting for the big episodes that were promised (and believe me, I get it), I am actually enjoying the ride along the way. The character development of the last several episodes has been great and I especially loved the connective tissue to the larger canon in this last episode.

In a mere 22 minutes we get a reference to the Death Star’s construction as well as foreshadowing of what lies ahead concerning the Rebels and the notorious super weapon plus a connection with the Darth Vader comic series’ first story arc with the sterilization of Geonosis and a reference to Saw Gerrera and the Onderon rebels from season 5 of the Clone Wars series. Nicely done, Dave, nicely done.

That’s my point exactly. While, from a marketing standpoint (getting you to tune in) it was successful, the fact that people are just tuning in “waiting for the good stuff” is the problem I’m talking about. The marketing ploy worked concerning locking in the viewership, but not in a way that allows those viewers to just enjoy the moment each week. I just think that if we were never enticed with the meal to come, more of us would be able to find more satisfaction in the appetizers. I’m just hoping they keep the dessert close to the chest (pardon the analogy, I’m hungry 🙂 ). But like I said, my negative outlook on the trailer’s impact is just my opinion. I agree with the Pooch that the promises of the trailer have maintained viewership, and maybe “worst thing they could have done” was an exaggeration, but my opinion that it has tainted the reception of the last several episodes remains.

Would you prefer those who consider these recent episodes “filler” to have simply got bored and stopped watching? That’s inevitably the flip side.

Personally, I don’t think they are boring. I’ve enjoyed the episodes myself and would have continued to watch regardless. If a show can’t keep you entertained week to week, it’s not doing its job and I would understand if people quit watching. I think the people who don’t like it have already stopped at this point and those that do will continue to watch anyway. I just think the trailer (which reveals a lot of cool stuff that seems to take place in just the final couple of episodes) set some false hopes and high expectations for the second half of the season as a whole. I think a more honest “second-half of the season trailer” would have been better (and still very good) followed by a big trailer for the finale the week before. I don’t think you would get all of the “tired of fillers” comments if we didn’t know what was coming.

I’d love to see Kallus as a rebel. I thought sooner or later that would’ve happenned, after all his failures. Plus this episode clarified some things about the Death Star’s construction: it was initially built around Geonosis, but they decided to move it to somewhere else, and punished geonosians early on for something they haven’t done right.

    • February 25, 2016 at 4:11 pm
      Permalink

I don’t think they were punished so much as it was Palpatine covering his tracks a la LOTS. They just knew too much and it was time to move on to the next phase, which ties in nicely with why we happened to see the Death Star above a jungle planet in the R1 teaser.

Right, that could be an explanation too. What is 100% confirmed is that Tarkin and DS-1 left Geonosis probably around 10 BBY (ending of the novel Tarkin), and geonosians were sterminated right after.

What I liked about this episode is that there was two planets mentioned having been sterilized by the Empire. Geonosis and Lasan. It is interesting that Agent Kallus was on both planets.

I think the reason why they can’t find a secret rebel base and they are continually ambushed is because chopper has a homing beacon or some sort of tracker inside him, implanted by the 7th Sister’s droids.

It’s much more effective to ambush someone off a ship, otherwise they can easily jump into hyperspace. It’s a good point though.

Even if you do consider character development as “filler”, I fail to see how hints at the Death Star construction and a probable genocide on Geonosis qualify as such. That’S news to us as well as to the rebels and may build up to Rogue One…
