Benicio Del Toro Talks Star Wars Episode VIII.

Benicio Del Toro

Benicio Del Toro, the first confirmed addition to the cast of Star Wars Episode VIII, describes the experience of being a part of the film as both “scary” and “exciting”. Read ahead to see what he thought of The Force Awakens and what his plans to prepare for his Star Wars role are.

From Toronto Sun:

Actor Benicio del Toro has a refreshingly clear-eyed view of being involved with the juggernaut that is Star Wars: Episode VIII: “It’s scary.” The Sicario star is laughing a bit when he adds, “It’s scary because there’s a lot of talk that I’m going to be in that movie — before I’ve even shot one scene! But I’m excited, too.”

Del Toro will now go from the small independent movie, A Perfect Day, to the behemoth that is Star Wars. “I’m in a lucky position that I’ve been able to do some independent movies and some not-so-independent movies,” he says. “But I don’t work differently on independent movies and studio films — my approach to Star Wars or any movie I do is pretty much the same. You work with the character, you try to bring something and you learn your lines.”

He’s looking forward to Star Wars. “I really enjoyed Episode VII. And I’ve enjoyed Star Wars, especially the first one — I think it’s called Episode IV now. And Return of the Jedi, and The Empire Strikes Back — I’m not a Star Wars buff like some out there, but as a kid I really liked those films, like, way before I ever thought I was going to be in movies. There’s something of a nostalgia thing that gets you excited about being part of the Star Wars world.”

The report also brings up the rumors that Del Toro will be playing a villainous role, although he wasn’t asked about that particular subject.

I think he would play a count Dooku like character

I would hope he’d be more villainous than Dooku.

The idea of Dooku (as he was introduced in the movie) was great. A rogue Jedi who became wary of the Republic and the Jedi falling into the sway of the Dark Side. Making him a Sith Lord was the mistake.

I think Dooku as a character left more question than answers. Can you now resign from beeing a jedi? And why did he betray the order and Repubic? And how could he become a ,,count” of something? The Republic isnt a feudal system…

Do you guys watch The Clone Wars, or REBELS? You CAN leave the Jedi order… and, if Ezra fell to the Dark Side, then Benicio D., playing him, WOULD be like Dooku.

Never watched any of those, only the movies.
And is there an answer why did he betray the Republic and the jedi order and how is he a ,,count” in a nonfeudal system?

There are princesses, queens and kings even nowadays in constitutional monarchies, but no counts. That would mean there is a feudal system going on.
It is just weird that someone who was a jedi (who I guess have to renounce all of their possessions) suddenly becomes a count of something after leaving the order.

Hello Davis, yes there is. Mainly, he was seduced to the dark side by Darth Sideous, much like Anakin was. Every system and planet send a representative to the senate, but the ancient ways of ruling in every planet sometimes prevaled. That is the case of Queen Amidala, princess Leia or Count Dooku. He was part of an aristocratic family in his home planet. I highly recommend you to watch the clone wars, the first seasons are sometimes misleading but from the 3t one on, their pretty epic.

Think we’re done w/ Sith. Based on all the hints planted in books / new canon + Ep. VII, Snoke’s a more ‘holistic’ dark side doctrine than just the narrower ‘Sith’ box; he favors Kylo Ren b/c of his grounding in both the light & dark sides of the Force

‘was just about to say the same thing when I saw your comment.

Though I’d be interested to see how the dynamic with Lando has evolved over the 30 year gap. Is he basically the same as he was back in Bespin? or has he hit hard times?
Or maybe he has actually cleaned up his act, becoming wiser and more grounded in his age.

        Many possibilities…

exactly. i hope that unlike han, lando went respectable(maybe into politics)… but is still his smooth, charming self.

People would complain about “Episode V rehash” so that won’t happen.

nah, its only a “rehash” if leia is hiding out in his city and he is forced to give her up to the first order but then decides against it and helps her escape instead. this is just bringing a character back, like they did with han, leia and luke already.

I see no reason Lando won’t be in it… Especially, if Del Toro is playing Ezra Bridger. He and Lando know each other…

Hopefully they give him a different character from “The Collector,” nothing against the character, but he’s already a Disney-alum, if Disney ended up giving him the same character in two separate franchises, I will feel kinda’ ripped off.
