Star Wars at NY Toy Fair Day 1: Rogue One Force Friday, SDCC Exclusive Figure Coming & More!

Toy-Fair

The New York Toy Fair opened yesterday and offered an abundance of new toys and merchandise that will be released in the upcoming months. Of course the news about the Star Wars toys were among the most anticipated. As expected no Rogue One toys were shown, but a few interesting details were revealed about the future plans of some of the companies.

The most interesting news from the event (although still not officially confirmed) came from team JediNews, who heard that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will have it’s own Force Friday. This was expected since months ago Lucasfilm confirmed that the special event that debuted last year, where the Star Wars toys are unleashed simultaneously worldwide, will make a return in the future. The only question was, what date will be set for the new Force Friday. According to JediNews the date is September 30, 2016. That’s almost a moth later than last year.

FF

But don’t worry. This doesn’t mean that you won’t see any Rogue One toys before that date. During the Hasbro panel it was revealed that the company will exclusively release a Rogue One action figure during the San Diego Comic Con. No more details were given on that mysterious figure.

ST

Again this was not surprising. As you probably remember, Hasbro did exactly the same thing last year, releasing an exclusive First Order Stormtrooper for SDCC 2015 (see image above). My guess is that this year we will be getting again some kind of trooper during SDCC 2016. As you know everything around these movies is top secret and releasing a toy that doesn’t show any plot or character details, makes the most sense.

Another interesting reveal from the Hasbro panel was the first look at the (3.75” Red Avenger) Darth Maul figure from Star Wars: Rebels. So far we’ve just got a quick glimpse at Maul’s face during the mid-season trailer, released a few weeks ago. It’s nice to see his more subtle robotic legs (image by Rebelscum):

And here’s a better look at the recently announced Takodana Encounter set (via Rebelscum):

Kotobukiya also displayed their line of Star Wars toys, and although they were shown before, the ArtFX statue of Captain Phasma grabbed the attention of many of the attendees.

Phasma

I really love the shiny metallic look of the toy. The statue will be released in March 2016.

LEGO also presented their line, which didn’t offer many surprises, since most of the sets were seen before in leaked images.

And last but not least, new Star Wars Funko Pops figures were spotted in a catalogue by Totally Pop Culture.

As you can see there are lots of new releases including Luke Skywalker. We still haven’s see a single toy of Luke from The Force Awakens. And there will definitely be some. Remember the photo we released of Luke before the movie was released? This was probably from a 3D scanning session for Lucafilm’s archives. I really hope we could get this new Luke toy sooner rather than later. Or perhaps they are saving it for Episode VIII, since Luke is expected to have a bigger role there? Who knows.

Stay tuned for more news on Day 2.

This is the only figure I will pay the scalpers for. KOTOR was and still is my favorite Star Wars story line.

In my little fanboy brain, there is still a sliver of hope that that Revan figure means that he’ll be re-canonized soon.

Freddie Prinze Jr did make the statement that quite a few Legends characters will be re-canonized on Rebels, so it certainly isn’t out of the question. Revan is easily one of the most popular characters alongside characters like Grand Admiral Thrawn and Mara Jade, so I think that ups his chances of being canonized in the new material. Upcoming episodes of Rebels will feature a Sith Holocron, might be the perfect time to bring Revan into the canon fold.

Yes, I noticed that! I hope that that holocron is Revan’s. Maybe then we can get a flashback, or at least his voice.

I hate to say this, but I think that last photo might be fake. *Snap* Wexley’s name is misspelled and the droid ME-8D9 is incorrectly labeled as CO-74.

It’s real. Funko is known for spelling mistakes.

Kinda wrong that the first TFA figure released is in Pop format and over half a year since the film’s release. I can see now why Hasbro is thinking of merging with Mattel.

When is the old Luke TFA figure out? Unless it is already and I just can’t find one?

Odd phenomenon w/ these figures: When Ep. III came out, you could have pretty much ANY character figure you wanted. 10 years on, and they’ve (apparently) swapped the age-old Kenner model (TONS of figures – everywhere…drug stores, retailers, grocery stores) to just a handful of figures that get bought up and resold on eBay @ x10+ mark-up. Completely absurd. Can’t get Chopper from Rebels unless you want to spend >$30 US, as an example. No sign of Rey w/ lightsaber either…

Couple this w/ the insanely high cost of Lego SW sets & you get toys for rich kids & older collectors w/ disposable cash sources-only. Yay!

EXACTLY what I was thinking. The Force Awakens has been out for 2 Months now and I still can’t walk into a store and buy any figures. It’s kind of ridiculous.

Agree – just want ‘the basic set’ of the main characters @ $6.99-$7.99 @ Target or Walmart or wherever. Don’t want a search for the holy grail @ $50 bucks a pop for Luke or Han. Yeah, back in the day there were special ‘easter egg’ figures (like vinyl vs. cloth cloak Jawas), but dude…at least you could COLLECT them (!)

And the quality of those figure that are released leaves something to be desired…. It’s hard to believe the “figures” that literally put “action figures” on the maps have fallen to the wayside in the new trilogy spearhead.

You know, I’m not feeling the Lego environment sets. Their vehicles just keep getting better and better, but the environments…they just get more and more abstracted, with less and less features, less bricks, and look less and less like the places they’re supposed to represent.

And that Luggabeast is kind of pitiful tbh.
