Star Wars: The Force Awakens Props Shown at Star Wars Launch Bay!

tumblr_nmx0dxrylA1s1xa0lo10_1280At the recently-opened Star Wars Launch Bay attraction at Disneyland and Disney World, there have been a couple of interesting props displayed, and some descriptions of said props also help paint a broader picture of what The Force Awakens is going to be like. Among these things are details about two lightsabers – one description puts an old rumor to rest, while another rekindles an old rumor to some extent.

Based on that description of the lightsaber being recovered on Bespin, it doesn’t sound like the opening shot of the movie is going to show a floating lightsaber in the middle of space. (Quick tangent – I like that it’s called the “Hero Lightsaber”, since it is symbolically used as the primary weapon for each protagonist.) It’s also interesting that the now-infamous Crossguard Lightsaber has ties to the past of the Star Wars setting, even though the weapon itself was made relatively recently – some rumor sources mentioned that it was a relic of some kind, so that clears things up signficantly. Also worth noting is that it appears as though that’s the blaster that Rey uses on Takodana – the one which, fittingly, is given to her by Han.

That’s pretty cool. I’ve been saying that amongst friends for some time. I’m glad this is the case as to me it makes sense.

If Anakin/Luke’s lightsaber is the “hero’s lightsaber” and Finn has it by the looks of the trailers/TV spots, does that mean Finn is the new hero ? I still don’t understand why Rey, being a Skywalker (or Skywalker Solo), doesn’t have the hero’s lightsaber. Maybe she’ll get it at the end of the movie after Finn fights Kylo.

I have this hunch that Rey has some reservations about wielding the thing. She’s Force sensitive, that’s almost certain. But I think she holds back in using the Force for what are probably some very good reasons. I expect that the first time she ignites a lightsaber (is that what they do?), it will signify that she’s taken a big step.

Agreed on that. I’d also guess that based on her staff when she DOES get her lightsaber, she’ll have a dual blade.

That’s a pretty good guess. If I were a gambling man (which I’m not) I’d wager the exact same thing.

The IMAX poster has Rey front and center. She is the new hero of the ST. The lightsaber will eventually find its way to Rey.

I think she will build her own though. I believe Rey will take up the hero saber for the final battle after Finn is wounded. But I think it will remain Finn’s primary weapon. Rey is more skilled in two-handed weapons, so she needs a dual-bladed saber.

Agree she’ll take on Kylo Ren with the lightsaber after Finn has fallen. Both of them will be no match for Kylo Ren. I really don’t think Finn will end up the lightsaber, I just don’t feel Finn is force aware and will never be trained as a Jedi. The movie will end with Chewie, Rey and BB-8 flying the Falcon to find Luke on that Skellig Michael Island planet, Rey and possibly BB-8 will leave the Falcon and climb the steps to the top where a hooded Luke will be waiting. Rey will hand Luke his father’s lightsaber and will be ready to embrace her destiny. The movie ends. Afterwards, Chewie will most likely fly back to where an injured Finn, who is recovering in a medical bay, the two of them will form a partnership. I believe Chewie and Finn will form a strong bond during acts 2 and 3 of TFA. Maybe a little of Finn’s backstory will be revealed during the scenes with Maz Katana, so this opens up a story arc for Finn, or perhaps not and he’ll simply slot into joining The Resistance.

Interestingly you say Rey will build her own lightsaber. I believe Rey’s staff was built by herself from items scavenged on Jakku. One or two items that she used to build the staff have some connection to the dark side. She isn’t aware of it, but for some reason was attracted to them. The rest of the items used to construct her staff is just junk.

Agree with you regarding Rey being set up to use a dual-bladed saber. That’s her fighting style.

Props are called “hero” props that are seen in closeup shots. I think that’s what it means.

I saw a lot of these costumes and props at Celebration Anaheim. It was great to see them up close. I’m much more looking forward, however, to seeing them on screen.

Rey’s blaster looks like a mix of a mini butane “flamethrower” and more intensely, Kyle Katarn’s Bryar Pistol from Dark Forces I & II (Jedi Knight)

In movie prop terminology, the “hero” prop is the prop that is the most meticulously crafted for closeup shots, rather than a prop used for action shots and shots where the prop is only seen from a distance.

Ancient design eh? Boy I hope we get these sabers in SWTOR then!

Also it implies that an ancient Sith Lord built the intitial saber with that design. Ragnos? Vitiate? Tulak Hord? Malak? Revan? The possibilities are endless!!!

If someone tells Rey about the “hero” lightsaber’s past, I wonder if she’ll even want it. Anakin has lost limbs twice with it in hand, Luke once.

Good question. I’m thinking that Finn ends up with it just as we’ve seen in the trailers.

Correct. One event (RotS), three limbs. Anakin was using a different lightsaber in AotC.

Once with Count Duku, the next in the dual with obi-wan. He did lose another hand in a dual with Luke, but that was a different (red) lightsaber.

The count Dooku fight was not with Anakin’s ROTS saber (which ended up being Luke’s). He was using 2 lightsabers, both of which were random sabers the Jedi brought them in the Colosseum fight. Anakin’s lightsaber was crushed in the droid fascility, and Obi-Wan’s second lightsaber was taken from him by the Geonosians. they were both using ‘loner’ sabers in that fight, and the Anakin/Luke saber wasn’t even created yet.

We already knew Kylo’s saber was new because Abrams said he constructed it himself. Really interesting that it is based on an ancient design. It also seems like the crossguard is designed to vent energy from the main blade, rather than being designed primarily as a guard.

This info made me even more excited than ever to see the film. The fact that his blade’s design is more ancient than any jedi or sith we have ever seen before (in this canon anyway) means he must have some really arcane knowledge either from some holocrons or perhaps a ancient being is his master. I think we will learn a lot more about the sith in this film.

I think Snoke’s knowledge is pretty vast, I’m still guessing the crystals used to make Sithcalibur is from Darth Vader’s lightsaber using the ancient design learned from Snoke. We may never know but would make sense.
