And now for the fun part – seeing how many people will post “this is the last bit of footage I’m watching before the movie comes out, I swear”…

Ain’t that the truth. It’s like those people that wake up after a night of heavy drinking and have a huge hangover and go, “ugh, I feel like crap….I swear, I’m never drinking again.” Lol

That scene really gave me goosebumps. With all the tv spot coming out, i’ve had this fear that we would know too much going into the theater. But damn.. I believe we’ve barely scratched the surface. I have a feeling that this movie will overload my chill center.

Its been to many years since the war, the current generations see WWII
as history not something that changed the world and killed millions of
people. In 77 this was not the case which is why Nazi symbolism in
movies now seems way more up front to some of us. They only had to put
in a little originally, to make the Empire reflect the Nazis slightly.
These days, with so many movies using themes reflective of WWII, you
have to be a lot more obvious about how you portray your villains, if
you want them to be reflective of the Nazis.

Looks great, like all of them. I think my biggest reservations so far, though, are about Maz. I like how she looks, but I’m not sure I’m liking the sound of the “I KNOW your eyes,” and “Dear child” lines. They seem a little over the top in their hammy, sage-like sentimentality. I’m not trying to nitpick. I’m wholeheartedly excited for this movie.

I have reservations for how Maz looks but I guess they couldn’t go too cgi-like with her, she had to blend in with the rest of the puppet characters. She looks a bit odd and the thing is that I have no idea how she is supposed to fit in with the PT since we have never seen her before or even heard of her. Yet she is supposed to be a guide and a mentor of sorts who has lived for the enitrety of the saga. JJ better have a good excuse for introducing a new character that is involved so deeply with the lore, otherwise she will be totally illgitimate in the eyes of many fans.

Maz voice/look is my biggest concern for the film. Please don’t Jump the Shark and end up with a bad Jar Jar kind of character.

      • November 23, 2015 at 4:27 pm
        Permalink

I think it should be fine to introduce/retcon a new mentor character who’s lived through the saga. Remember that in the PT we really only focused on the key players/movers/shakers of the galaxy, like the elite of the Jedi and/or the politicians/military leaders. I believe that it would make the Star Wars universe smaller to only recognize previously established characters. Just think about how big our world is, and how many people we don’t even know about who could be aged wise mentors in touch with aspects of reality we don’t understand. Now multiply our world times hundreds, if not thousands of worlds, and there you have the undiscovered character potential of the Star Wars universe.

Well, once upon a time, some of us were concerned about a green muppet being a Jedi master and playing a pivotal role in a SW film.

And that turned out alright. 😉

I’m thinking the sentimentality will work in context with Rey’s character. I think we will really feel her disconnectedness and isolation, and Maz could be a character that helps her commit to making her life better, and realizing her potential. Say what you will about the Star Trek reboots, but Admiral Pike’s mentorship to Kirk (especially in Into Darkness) was wonderful in how sentimental it was. Lost people often need someone to tell them it’s going to be ok, that they have worth, and that they are not alone.

Well said. It could be great in context. I also liked the Pike/Kirk relationship a lot, and actually a lot of the sentimentality in the Star Trek movies worked for me.

Lucasfilm has done an amazing job at showing us so much but so little at the same time. In essence, all we’ve gotten from this TV spot is 4 random, out of context shots and a random clip of dialogue, but they’ve made it feel like so much more.

    • November 23, 2015 at 9:48 pm
      Permalink

Yeah they’ve just been fleshing out the same few scenes. I have to assume that none of the scenes we’ve seen are that pivotal to the plot then. Except for scenes with Poe getting captured and tortured. I think that’s why they show so little of Poe because he must be really central to the plot. It seems to me that he connects everything. He sets in motion the whole Leah gives him the lightsaber– Kylo Captures him– sends Kylo on a hunt plot. And he sets the whole Finn escapes– meets Rey– takes the Millenium Falcon– meets Han plot. It seems to me he’s the fulcrum of the movie.

Enough of that rant yeah i agree they are doing a good job showing nothing but still a lot.

What does Maz mean by “the belonging (?) you seek” ?

    • November 23, 2015 at 1:55 pm
      Permalink

I assume she was abandoned on Jakku and her family promised to come back for her but never did. Hasn’t it been said somewhere that she’s been alone there since the age of 5 ? Then we see her tell BB8 she’s waiting for her family.

Are you saying “belonging” in this context means being part of something ? Like a family ? Will she find that sense of belonging by becoming part of the new Jedi order ? Or by reuniting with her family ? So many questions from Maz’s words in the trailers and TV spots….

She is alone and waiting for her family, so that is the belonging she seeks…how it pans out is anyone’s guess but I think she’ll come to regard the people she meets on this adventure as her new “family” whether or not they are blood relatives.

Are the stormtroopers doing the raised fist (communist salute) or the Roman (fascist/nazi) salute ? I believe the director meant to use the latter, but it looks like they are actually doing the former. Could it be bad research ?

Roman / Nazi Salute would be right arm and straight outstretched right hand. The director wouldn’t use that as it could or would take some fun out of dressing up as a … stormtrooper.
