New Star Wars: The Force Awakens Image Gallery by Entertainment Weekly!

harisson-ford-jj-abrhamsEntertainment Weekly has released huge image gallery from Star Wars: The Force Awakens with lots of new info about the movie. We decided that this deserves a separate article and not an update to the previous one. Check it out…

We are posting only the new photos and the caption that sounded really interesting. For the rest make sure to go to Entertainment Weekly. Really great stuff!

rey's speeder“It’s a beat up tractor that’s a hand-me-down or scavenged item,” says production designer Darren Gilford. “It was meant to look like a piece of farm equipment, something that’s not going real fast compared to what a sports car would do. But it has high-end torque like a tractor that needs to haul a trailer.”
daisy-ridleyIt’s a lonely existence scrounging for sustenance on a junkyard planet. Rey was ditched on Jakku by her family when she was a child and has no idea why — or why they never returned. “She’s been alone for a long time,” Ridley says. “When something occurs when you’re 5, you know what went on but you don’t understand the reasoning. She’s hopeful for what lies ahead, whether that involves the past or not.” So why hasn’t abandonment made her bitter, angry, and… prone to the Dark Side? “Hope makes people good, a lot of the time,” Ridley says. “You hope for a brighter future, and resentment is outweighed.”

boyega-chewbacca-fordIn Star Wars, that term often refers to someone’s limb flying off thanks to a lightsaber blade. Here, Finn, Chewie, and Han are still in one piece, but entirely surrounded by First Order stormtroopers. There’s hope on the horizon, however. The cavalry is riding flying in …
StormiesFirst Order soldiers take fire as they rush into battle from the gangplank of a troop carrier. Although Finn is no longer among them, Boyega says soldiers raised from childhood to serve this remnant of the scattered Imperial forces are fed propaganda about the heroes of the Rebellion. Unlike Rey, he has learned a lot about Luke Skywalker — but he has been taught he was a villain who destroyed the benevolent Empire.
first-order-troopers-shootFirst Order stormtroopers lay down intense cover fire within Starkiller Base. Many have been conscripted and indoctrinated with hate and fear of what the Rebellion stood for. Why risk their lives for this cause? They’ve been taught that’s all they’re good for.
bb8BB-8’s lenses, aerials and panels went through more facial arrangements than a Beverly Hills housewife. “You could move one component and the face would start to have a slight sad look about it or slightly aggressive,” says Neal Scanlan, the head of The Force Awakens creature shop. “You want them to be able to talk to you before they move. And if they can do that, then the movement adds extra [characterization] on top.”
carrie-fischerShe’s always been more than a princess — diplomat, spy, warrior, undercover agent — but 32 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, we’re going to meet a Leia who is a little more battle weary, a little more broken hearted. Imagine fighting for a cause your whole life and the frustration that naturally comes from being called to fight some more. Later today, EW will share a detailed look at where we find Leia in The Force Awakens, from the perspectives of both J.J. Abrams and Carrie Fisher.
captain-phasma“I wish I could say to you, ‘Oh, but of course, the entire thing was designed specifically for me,’” says Gwendoline Christie. “If only that were true — if only!” It turns out, Captain Phasma was tailored just for her. The chrome-plated trooper originated as a design for Kylo Ren, but then J.J. Abrams was inspired to create a new character. “I just thought it would be really cool if we could find someone to play the part who was female, and I’m a fan of Game of Thrones; Gwendoline is in that show, [The Force Awakens casting director] Nina Gold casts it, she knew Gwendoline, obviously,” he says. “We were very lucky to get to have her in the movie. She’s not in many scenes, but her presence is powerfully felt when she’s there.”
rey-star-destroyer“Rey, Finn, and Kylo, they all start off in a place where they have been led to feel like they’re wanting,” says Daisy Ridley. In this sequence, first seen in the Oct. 19 trailer, she is spelunking through the heart of a long-dead Star Destroyer. “She’s never sat around a table and had a meal with someone else. She works to feed herself, and she goes to sleep, and she gets up again. It is a sad life,” Ridley adds. “The film, for Rey, is a journey of finding out that no one is no one.”
daisy-ridley-bb8-john-boyegaSome fans speculate that Rey’s weapon of choice looks suspiciously like the staff lightsaber of Darth Plagueis, the Sith lord who served as master of Emperor Palpatine back in his Darth Sidious apprenticeship. Daisy Ridley has heard that guesswork, too. “I mean everyone is praying that it’s Darth Plagueis’s staff. But… it’s just a staff,” Ridley says. “She’s a young woman in a galaxy by herself. It’s not primarily a weapon, it’s useful as well. It does all sorts of things roamin’ around Jakku. She uses it to defend herself. That’s really as far as it goes, unfortunately.” Asked if its electrified, like a cattle prod, and the actress tries — and fails — to stifle a laugh. “Cattle prod! No, she doesn’t have a charger!” she says. “It’s just a plain old staff!”
FightNow we see there’s a third element to Finn’s snowy, woodlands duel with Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. Rey is part of the battle, too. We don’t know how she fits in (although this looks a lot like the trailer shot of her weeping over a fallen friend), but as the Darth Vader-obsessed villain ignites the unstable blade of his saber, the untrained Finn is looking pretty unsure of himself. “Obviously that makes things a bit more tricky for Finn,” Boyega says. “That’s genuine fear.”

I wonder if we’ll see Luke use some bad-ass new Jedi skill, where he can teleport or appear as a “living force ghost” to help them out? Would work better for this scene, rather than him just suddenly arriving “physically” at the location. Could also let Rey know where he can be found, which is how she finds him at the end of the film.

Finn will fight Kylo Get beat. Give the lightsaber to Rey. Rey fights kylo puts up a better fight but is about to get killed when Chewie and Han or Poe save them. Finn and Rey will both be Jedi. This looks like it follows in the tradition of the prequels in a way with Two Jedi vs. a Sith. Obi Wan and Qui Gon vs. Maul, Anakin and Obi Wan vs. Dooku, and then Anakin and.Obi Wan vs Dooku again.

Interesting tidbit from one pf the photo captions – “Rey was conceived as a female protagonist from the get-go, but both she and Finn were written without any specifications to race.” This statement would lead us to believe that Rey’s parents can’t be Han AND Leia… Or else they would’ve specifically needed a “white” actress.

Really surprised EW published the picture of the unmasked Kylo Ren about to face-off against Finn/Rey. The branches on the ground, what people have been speculating as wookie fur. The absent light from a spacecraft (that is swooping down to rescue Rey/Finn) that we say in the trailer as Rey cries over a badly injured Finn).

Abrams would make the biggest mistake in cinema history if he doesn’t get Luke a dramatic entrance to help Finn and Rey.

    • November 11, 2015 at 10:02 pm
      Permalink

JJ would be making a massive storytelling blunder if Luke does bail out the heroes of this new trilogy at the end. Luke ex Machina is a terrible idea.

Do you know why Lucas killed off Old Ben in ANH? Because he couldn’t have the old Jedi showing up the supposed hero of the movie in the Death Star run. And he couldn’t have Ben sitting around the control room doing nothing. So Lucas took his wife’s advice and killed him off in the second act.

Heroes need to be heroic. Having them rescued by superheroes diminishes their stories. This is a new trilogy. Luke’s role will likely be fleshed out in future films.

      • November 11, 2015 at 10:32 pm
        Permalink

This is true, however… If you establish the new heroes in the first two acts and reintroduce Luke in the 3rd act it would work.

“Rey, Finn, and Kylo, they all start off in a place where they have been led to feel like they’re wanting,” This to me says these are the three force sensitive main characters in this movie. Not just Rey and Kylo.

So here’s a question. In the trailer we see Finn ignite the lightsaber and it doesn’t seem Rey is near him. Then in the trailer we see Kylo coming towards Finn and Rey is not near him. In this picture Rey is right by Finn’s side. We know Rey can fight and handle herself from the previous trailer. So where did she go? what happened to her? Does Kylo incapacitate her for awhile before she comes to and takes over Finn when he is about to get killed.

    • November 11, 2015 at 11:03 pm
      Permalink

Perhaps he tells her to run (to meet up with Chewie & Han, or another waiting ship)?

    • November 11, 2015 at 11:17 pm
      Permalink

Yup, I think Finn might try to delay Kylo by himself (even though he knows he can’t win), allowing Rey to escape or set the resistance plan in motion to destroy Starkiller Base.
Another important detail on that image is that Kylo does not have his face covered. On the first trailer we see him triggering the lightsaber while covered by his hood. Then we had another shot of him like this one, without his hood/mask on. I think this may be the point of the movie (and near the end of it) where he reveals his identity to Rey for the first time. Not like “Hey sis, wassup?”, but more like that “I will fulfill OUR destiny” line we heard before.

Actually Rey is holding a blaster pistol so I think she immediately went for hιgher ground, a safe distance so she can have range and escape ways. Finn will probably serve as a hold-the-line warrior at that point while Rey attempts a killshot.

FWIW, in that super early concept art it looks like Rey and Finn are fighting Kylo Ren (tho he looks way different in the concept art) on a snowy planet, so I guess this was the climax planned all along — though interestingly, in that pic Rey has a lightsaber.

    Thing’s I’ve noticed:
    1. This is at least the second shot I’ve seen of Ren’s blade where the energy is running along the front of the crossguard. Seems to me they’ve put a little more care into stopping the complaining about how all you’d have to do is slice down the sides to cut the guards off.

    2. We now know that Dameron definitely is aware of Finn being a Stormtrooper, so the speculation that when they meet on the base Dameron doesn’t know him appears to be wrong.

    3. Plageuis staff rumors, RIP. I hope.

    • November 11, 2015 at 11:30 pm

There’s no energy running along the front of the cross guard. I thought that too, at first, but realized it’s merely a reflection from the main blade.

        Yes you’re right it’s a reflection

    • November 12, 2015 at 1:11 am
      Permalink

Like the other two said…it’s a reflection. I also think I have it figured out. The blade is unstable, as Kylo lacks the skill to align the crystal as precisely as a Jedi would….this causes excessive heat/energy as the saber is inefficient….and the excess energy must be vented out the side vents. I’d bet money on that.

So it looks like Rey is really scavenging junk (motor parts and stuff like that) from old ships, not looking for specific artifacts. Whatever she may find is not intentional. She Also ignores her origin. Very “Luke-alike”.
The action is triggered by someone else (Leia on the OT). And through Finn or BB-8 (R2 and 3PO on the OT), the action gets to find her and drags her into it, ending up in revelations about her bloodline.

After keeping things under wraps for so long, they’re really starting to open the flood gates. So much new info or at least clarification here. All of which is exactly what I assumed. Most answers are the simplest because Occum’s Razor. Rey is just a scavenger, not a relic-hunter. Her staff is just a staff. Finn really is a Storm Trooper who realizes he’s on the wrong side, etc.

One of the more interesting reveals, imo, is that something occurred when Rey was 5 that she vaguely remembers, and which Daisy seems to imply was the reason she was left on Jakku. I’m convinced she’s referring to the destruction of Luke’s Jedi Temple/Academy, and Luke is her father.

Also, it’s actually 32 years between RotJ and TFA, which I don’t think has been confirmed before. Most of us were assuming 30 years, but it’s actually 32, meaning it has been the exact same length of time there was from Episode 1 to Episode 4 (because Episode 1 takes place 32 BBY).

Assuming everyone is playing their age. Rey’s family left her at five. Daisy is in her early twenties so that would be about 15 to 17 years on Jakku by herself. Adam Driver is in his early thirties so in that possible flashback of the Knights of Ren in the rain with the younglings surrounding them that could be a 16 to 18 year old Kylo. That’s plausible.

Also with Adam Driver being in is early thirties it would make sense that he is Han and Leia’s child. Maybe they had him a year after the events of ROTJ.

Casting sides had Rey in her late teens. But things do change from casting sides and, maybe, she’s playing her age.

I go back to the trailer, when we see Kylo starting a lightsaber duel with Finn. WHAT DOES THAT TELL US? Number one: Finn IS Force Sensitive and Kylo could beat him only with a light saber. Or number two: Kylo´s Force Mana draws out so he can´t hurt Finn with the Force. Or Number Three: Kylo is stupid and completely forgot that he can Force Choke or Force Throw Finn anytime he wants and thus decided to use the Lightsaber. In secret he knows that that is a much cooler way for the audience…

Or Kylo just doesn’t know if this kid is good or not, so he decides to get his lightsaber just in case.
We don’t see how the battle pans out, Finn will probably get annhilated in no time, and will lie wounded on the snowy ground like we see in the trailer with Rey crying.

If you read some of the spoilers which have come out in the past months, especially on MSW site, you know who that lightsaber will end up going to.

Now what i find interesting is that Daisy Ridley tosses the more or less obscure name Darth Plagueis like it was Darth Vader or Jabba the hutt. I simply find it very interesting that a newbie like her mentions his name. surely that means that his name has been mentioned during production…..

Well maybe she did her homework in prepping for the film by doing a close watch of all 6 films.

could be, but still, its a name mentioned once, briefly….. now what if in her force awakens script there is a scene where Kylo Ren reports back to Snoke saying” i failed you master Plagueis” ….

This is the reason why Ridley knows about Plagueis, people like you who keep bringing his name up time and again.

I think sometimes she goes around in forums and even just in the comment section under the star wars trailers, to see what people are saying about her.
And she also heard that name at Comicon, so maybe she did some research to know what that fan was referring to.

I feel the same way, but it continues. Most Plagueis believers think it was just a misdirect. It also doesn’t help that Andy Serkis’ description of Snoke sounds a lot like a Muun, which would certainly hint at him being Plagueis, not that I think he is, but it gives more hope to those who believe.

    RE: Simon Peggs rant

enough is enough. everyone is allowed to have an opinion on something and yes, a large faction of the star wars community hate most/all of the prequels, but for a figure involved in the franchise publically and professionally to act this way continually is beyond disgraceful. The dude needs to be banned from future participation in star wars and have his cameo cut from VII.

gimme a break….he has a right to his opinion…..and guess what…his opinion is correct….and not only that J.J shares Pegg’s opinion. They are best friends…he was on set for a reason..to Help J.J stay true to star wars….While you little ignorant jackasses are crying because for some stupid reason you do not understand why nobody likes the prequels..this guy is actually working to save star wars and bring it back to the way it was meant to be in the first place…im sick of you little 90’s kids arguing over those stupid assed fuckin movies….Do yourselves a fuckin favor and go watch the Mr.Plinkett movie reviews of episode 1-3..maybe those will make you finally STFU… the prequels are an abomination….and your arguments about them will NEVER matter. because you are WRONG…and no its not a “large faction” of the star wars community that hates the prequels…you need to wake up and realize that its about 90% of the Star Wars community that hates them and are not blind and see them for what they really are….even the fuckin president ahs cracked jokes about the prequels…even Lucas realizes they were a mistake..you are part of a very very very small group my friend..get over it…they are laughing at your little partition in Hollywood. The prequels are a fuckin joke….sorry. good luck getting J.J Abrams best friends cameo cut tho. Simon Peg was on set helping J.J for pretty much the whole movie…how does that make you feel? 🙂

Wait a second…look at that “X-WING”, it doesn’t look like the wings separate, am I wrong? I don’t see where they would come apart, maybe that’s a new fighter, like an E-Wing?

You’re wrong. Unlike the T-65, which has two distinct wings that stack on top of one another, the T-70 has a single wing that splits in two when the S- foils are locked in attack position.

I am aware of the split wing, in that shot it just looks so seamless there is no way they could be separate. I’m sure it’s not a new fighter, but man it would be cool if they did bring in something different.

The front edge doesn’t split. It’s a single plane cut in half. The front part of the wing goes down, the rear part goes up. Still gives it the classic X shape,
