Star Wars Comics: Obi-Wan & Anakin Limited Series & More.
Marvel has announced a new Star Wars miniseries at the New York Comic Con, one that stars Anakin and Obi-Wan, set between The Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones. In addition, some information about the forthcoming comics have come to light.
From USA Today:
Written by Charles Soule (Star Wars: Lando) and drawn by Marco Checchetto (Star Wars: Shattered Empire), the five-issue miniseries Star Wars: Obi-Wan & Anakin debuts in January and is the first Marvel Comics title to explore the two characters’ relationship in the time frame between the first prequel movies.
“I want people to set their preconceived notions about what an Obi-Wan and Anakin story is aside,” Soule says. “We’ve seen a lot of them but this is something that’s going to feel and look different.”
The miniseries is set three years into Anakin’s training under Obi-Wan — something he promised the dying Qui-Gon he would do — at a peacetime period where the Jedi are at the height of their power and many feel Anakin is destined to do an enormous amount of good for the universe.
He and Obi-Wan are in a spaceship heading back to a diplomatic fleet when they get a distress call from a remote deserted planet. When they land, the Jedi find a mountainous place with deep valleys containing huge roiling clouds of green mist that cover the surface. “It’s a place that’s designed to have many, many secrets,” Soule says, “and it does.”
The story is said to extensively explore the dynamic between the two characters in a new way, with the author describing the story as one about warrior monks that is heavily inspired by Lone Wolf & Cub and the Samurai films of Akira Kurosawa. The story will feature flashbacks that are interspersed throughout the overarching narrative, revealing a personal crisis occurs between the two characters – Anakin is beginning to question the way things are with the Jedi Order and the injustices of the Galaxy, while Obi-Wan is worried about whether or not he really is suited to be Anakin’s teacher.
In other news, Vader Down, the major crossover between the Star Wars and Darth Vader comics, will start this November and conclude in January. The event revolves around Darth Vader being cornered by the Rebel Alliance when he is stranded on a planet, leading to the Alliance to begin massive manhunt to kill or capture the strongest warrior in the Empire. The annuals for Star Wars and Darth Vader, which tell unrelated stories to the Vader Down event, will both arrive by the end of the year.
