SW7N Review: Marvel’s Kanan – The Last Padawan #5

Kanan #5

Before we get going I have to correct myself. I was under the impression this would be the last issue of the series. I was wrong. We may just be getting started, but I’m not going to spoil that for you here…

This issue follows suit in what has been an excellent look into the immediate aftermath of Order 66. We have followed young Padawan Kaleb Dume through Hell and back to arrive at a place where he is ready to rejected what the rest of the galaxy already has….the Jedi.

Kanan #5

The last thing he has to survive as a Padawan are the two Clone Troopers who finally caught up with him. This is an interesting glimpse we are given into the dilemma some Clone Troopers must have had when it came to turning on the Jedi. The Jedi were more than their commanders-they were their friends and also served as a moral compass.

Kanan was taken capture at the end of the last issue. Janus Kasmir and General Kleeve have teamed up to help rescue the Padawan from the Clone Troopers.

Kanan #5

Kanan needs little help, though. He decides to use the Force one last time to get himself out of the sticky situation. Let’s just leave it at that so you can enjoy that one for yourselves.

I really don’t have much to say about this issue because it is pretty straightforward. Greg Weisman leaves us hanging a little bit with possibly more stories that may tie into the Rebels story. If you have been following this arc I can’t think of a reason to stop now. The more I learn about Kanan the more I want to know. This post-ROTS period is being fleshed out more and more in the new canon and I’m not losing any interest.

This was a great issue and a fantastic miniseries. I’m planning to re-read the entire thing over my lunch break.

My quick take – an unexpectedly satisfying Star Wars story that helps me to enjoy Rebels more and also informs me of the post RotS era. Wonderful stuff.

Caleb Dume, not Kaleb Dume. And they’ve announced before that the series is ongoing, as well as the fact the next issue is a one-off that takes place in the Rebels timeline (right where the framing narrative of this story arc started/ended). Then the story arc after that will be another flashback, this time to Caleb/Kanan’s first mission as a new Padawan during the Clone Wars.

That was always one of my bigger complaints with the PT. They just had the CT’s flip a switch and kill the Jedi. It took extensive expanded lore to finally explore that it wasn’t that simple. Even though some of that lore has been removed… the Clone Wars and other stuff still followed some of those themes.

Word. Especially Cody. I dug his character development, but then in RotS he’s goes from playfully quipping with Obi-Wan to straight-up murdering him without a second’s hesitation.

I understand the clones were supposed to be heavily-indoctrinated, but they never acted brainwashed. You think he’d have at least showed some remorse over the order to kill his friend.

In the clone wars cartoon one of the clones snapped and killed and Jedi. I think it was late season 5 or in 6. The was a chip in their head that order 66 would trigger. He was defective and accidentally went off.

Cody puts one hesitation second when he looks at Obi-Wan. Then he gives his order

I thought Karen Travis did a nice job explaining some of the dilemmas some of the Clone Troopers faced during Order 66. I know her work is no longer canon, but I still liked her books.

The Star Wars universe is filled with powerful villains of all shapes and sizes including Sith Lords, bounty hunters, and gangsters. Lucasfilm may have gone Order 66 on the Star Wars Expanded Universe but here s why Clone Wars and Rebels are must-see shows in preparation for Episode 7.
