I’d say this composition could say she and Kylo are siblings, maybe twins, but on opposite sides.

Maybe it suggests the two are indeed related after all.

I don’t think it’s weird, I think it’s symbolic. I think those two are somehow going parallel each other.

That’s the best part about the poster. No Episode VII.

      • October 18, 2015 at 7:15 pm
        Permalink

Eh, why? It’s clearly Disney trying to confuse the general public into confusing these episodes with their spin-off movies. Aka the spin-offs are just as relevant as the episodes, which they most certainly are not

        • October 18, 2015 at 7:20 pm
          Permalink

No, we’re just tired of roman numerals. Also VII looks like VI looks like IV and now I’ve gone cross-eyed.

How about this: Star Wars: Episode Chrometrooper – the Force Awakens.

        • October 18, 2015 at 7:25 pm
          Permalink

No, it’s a return to the way things were done during the original trilogy, when episode numbers were never indicated anywhere outside the opening crawl. Unlike with the prequels, there’s no need to indicate where these fall on the timeline. The spin-offs, however, will need something to distinguish them and will be marketed accordingly.

        • October 19, 2015 at 9:43 pm
          Permalink

Yes, it’s totally to confuse the general public. Which is why the spin off movies have the tag line “A Star Wars Story” after the title unlike the new trilogy films. And prior to that, they were calling them “Star Wars Anthologies”.

Get a grip. Disney is being very clear about EVERYTHING that they are doing.

And hate to break it to you, but the spin offs will be just as relevant. They’re going to be canon, like everything else that is released now.

Welcome to the New Order. If you don’t like it, the spice mines of Kessel are lovely this time of year.

          • October 19, 2015 at 10:00 pm
            Permalink

They can call it canon all they want, I’m one of the few people who consider Lucas’ stories to be canon and nothing more. I’m not saying that’s right, it’s just the way I prefer to enjoy Star Wars. I’ve read countless EU books, comics, played games etc, but they aren’t and never will be of the same caliber. Again, stating my opinion, not saying you or anyone else should think the same.

And please, don’t tell me that your average cinema goer knows the difference between the episodes and the spin-offs, because they don’t. I have family and friends who are not Star Wars fans, while their children are, and they talk about Rogue One and The Force Awakens as though they are the same thing. Annoying, but sadly true. Only someone actively interested in Star Wars knows the difference. To everyone else it’s ‘oh cool, another Star Wars film!’.

The reason the Anthology change happened was due to Lucas’ specifications of the deal which said only the episodes aka the actual continuation of his story, could begin with the words ‘Star Wars’, hence: Star Wars – The Force Awakens. And what Disney were trying to do was Star Wars Anthologies: Rogue One, which doesn’t meet the criteria, hence why it’s now Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Sounds silly, but look it up if you don’t believe me, I think it’s stupid too. But Disney know exactly what they are doing, it only makes sense from a business strategy. They’re not out to bring Star Wars to the world, they’re out to make as much money as possible. Don’t be so naive lol

In terms of screenwriting credits if there are two name and there is & that means they wrote it together but in the event of the word and that means he helped but he was not part of the final screenplay used for filming but enough of his work was used to given him a written by credit. So hope that helps

Guillermo del Toro was also given a writer’s credit for The Hobbit, even though absolutely nothing of his take on it made it onto the screen. It’s just the way things work in Hollywood, anyone who worked on it, even if nothing is used, has to be credited.

Pablo Hidalgo recently mentioned at a NYCC panel that Arndt’s ideas along with Lucas’ were used for world building in the new era. So even though his script wasn’t the final product, his original ideas were built upon.

I agree symbolism in this poster is the main factor. I think the thing top right is inside a planet, I hope it distinguishes itself from the death star though.

I think this is why it’s called Starkiller. While the Deathstar was able to destroy a planet, this one will be able to actually kill an entire star…. talk about bringing darkness to the galaxy.. literary.

I want this film to be great – not an exercise in nostalgia. What seems frustrating about this is the stormtroopers are basically just reboots – it made sense their origin being in the PT but in a sequel 30 years later we’re getting ‘The First Order’ – essentially the Empire in all but name, with troops that look pretty much the same, with a weapon that looks pretty much just like the Death Star, a desert planet that looks pretty much just like Tatooine, X-wings etc – it is like a greatest hits collection.

Disappointing when you think it is set in a massive galaxy and all the original ideas you could work into that.

I thought I was the only one thinking this way…I really doubt that we’re gonna see much more than what already was shown until now…the only really cool thing os this new movie is kylo ren’s sword, the rest is just nostalgia…in Phantom Menace everything was new…batle droids, darth maul, pod racing, new planets, cool caracthers like watto and sebulba…now you have recycled versions of jabba, death star, ice planet, desert planet…

You forgot Tatooine is used in all three prequels…oh so original.
Proto-Star Destroyers? Yep, in the prequels.
Proto-X-Wings? Yep, also in the prequels.
White armored Jedi Killers? In the prequels.
Fett Bounty Hunter? In the Prequels.
C3PO? In the prequels, with an origin that shrank the galaxy,
Re-use of gold/yellow vehicles for our heroes? Yep, prequels (forgiven because of Lucas’s affinity for gold/yellow hot rods)
            Geonosis? Desert planet. Prequels.
Jar Jar Binks? Found in the jungle of a planet.
Shutting down the shield of the big bad thing needing to be destroyed???? In the prequels.

Oh, and JABBA THE HUTT IS IN THE PREQUELS.

And you can’t list off a bunch of droids and alien characters and assume we won’t get new ones this time…..because we are, in fact, just go to your local Target/Walmart or K-Mart.

I love how this shows that the new super weapon is not just another build planet as if it were a Death Star 3.0, but that they actually build it in a planet. If you ask me, that thing will be covered up so that it looks like an actual planet, until they need to actually use it.

    Overall just an amazing poster!

Except that the Super Weapon is the size of A PLANET.

It’s pretty distinguised, and not just because of the size: as someone else pointed out, this could mean that now, in order to destroy the super weapon, they will have to blow up a whole planet – which is kind of a big deal, with how everything is connected through the Force and all.

They can just destroy the important bits to make it inoperable and irreparable. Also, you could easily argue that the First Order destroyed it by turning it into a weapon. And it is possible that the First Order is the only form of life on that planet.

        • October 19, 2015 at 1:39 am
          Permalink

And while I think that destroyng a whole planet, even if the FO is the only life form on it (which sound very unlikely, btw) is still a pretty big deal, what you said is the exact reason why I wrote “this COULD mean that …”.

As of now we can only speculate: we are mostly assuming that that thing is the FO super weapon, but it’s actually in the blueish/light side of the poster, just behind Finn, so it could also be the rumored Leia’s super weapon.

The point here is that I see a bunch of people in a big hurry to scream “oh no it’s the DS all over again this movie will sux yaddayaddayadda JJ is unoriginal yaddayadda” and that’s just stupid.

Very excited for the film, but these photoshopped posters…can’t stand them.I hoped they would go back to the style of the first original trilogy posters. No such luck. Also, a bit dissapointed in the lack of Luke in this thing. I’m hoping they’re just saving his appearance as a surprise. But I fear he hardly is in this film..as the rumours say.

Two things I take away at once: 1) Rey definitely gets the central position, confirming to me that she is the protagonist of the movie, and quite possibly the entire trilogy. 2) Luke is not featured. This may confirm that his role is very limited; perhaps he will indeed only appear near the end.

Maz looks a lot like Kit Fisto and similarly has what appears to be a kind of smirk/smile. Wonder if the character will be quite humorous. Up til now I’d assumed her to be very serious and considered. Maybe a crazy Yoda type, which would be cool. Man I cannot wait for this. The Star Wars Twitter says full trailer drops on the 20th rather than 19th. Seems like a sneek peak teaser of the main trailer will be shown during the US football rather than the full thing. So while everyone’s getting super hyped for it I’ll be doing a long ass shift in work. Will NOT watch on my phone, gonna have to wait and savour it with headphones on a good screen. Damn.

It was unoriginal having a second Death Star in RoTJ too. And more Jedi in the prequels. And more Jedi now in the sequels. I mean, we’ve seen light sabers, and TIE Fighters, and X-Wings before. The Millennium Falcon isn’t new either. Nor are Storm Troopers, or redesigned Star Destroyers. See what I’m getting at? No one harped on those. Why harp on a new super weapon?
            I imagine we’ll live.

          • October 19, 2015 at 7:22 pm
            Permalink

All the things you mention (apart from the space craft and uniforms) are integral parts of the story, more Jedi in the prequels makes sense and at the time it was wholly original, Jedi are at the heart of Star Wars and we had never seen them functioning as an entity. But the prequels didn’t give us the OT’s greatest hits, they showed us almost entirely new aspects of the galaxy – basically they showed us more of George Lucas’ imagination. My reservation about the new films is there is a lack of imaginative boldness. And as much as I like JJ Abrams (he seems like a nice guy and his eye candy is excellent) the depth of his imagination and intellectual interests is not comparable to Lucas who conceived the whole thing in the first place – but if he is surrounded by good people – who knows. My expectations are low though.

          • October 19, 2015 at 7:27 pm
            Permalink

You’re seriously talking about the depth of imagination of a guy who gave us Jar Jar Binks, who made poop jokes and was barely intelligible making Captain Obvious statements about any given situation he was involved in while standing next to two serious actors who were actually portraying Jedi in a pretty bad ass way. Which gave us a very lop sided picture of what we were supposed to be feeling or experiencing in any given shot in the film.

Again, with the awfulness that is the Prequels staring us all in the face, it’s fun to see people use them as examples of George’s BOLD IMAGINATION. Especially since he relied on other people to create everything, and he just said yes he liked how that looked, or no he didn’t. Directing at it’s MOST imaginative. Hilarious.

You are probably forgetting the the OT wasn’t about people being ‘badass’ it was a children’s fantasy adventure. As were the prequels. But the sad fact is armies of man-children think the films should grow up with them!

Yet Disney, Abrams, Kennedy, Iger, are making a new trilogy that so far* appears to be catering to the legion of adult-children (Let’s not be sexist, lots of girls love Star Wars too) who were upset by the absurdity of the prequel trilogy. And consequently has reinvigorated the Star Wars hype train that had long since died a miserable death since all those adult fans felt they were shit on with the prequel trilogy.

This is a tried and true excuse I’ve seen used by Prequel defenders since the beginning of time. “Oh, well, it was made for kids so of COURSE you didn’t like it.”

You know what? I love the Muppets. Love them dearly. That shit was made for kids. I don’t care, I still enjoy it. And you know what else? They’re actually good.

So because Lucas made a film trilogy for children (About the fall of a Jedi to the Dark Side who ended up slaughtering children and aiding in the destruction of an Order that protected the galaxy and brought justice to those who were in need of it..very kid friendly plotline) we’re supposed to forgive him for lazy directing and not point out it’s evident no one had stood up to him and said “This is a bad idea George” on any of his terrible ideas? Har.

Let me save you the effort of your next post. “Well he didn’t make it for fans, he made it for himself and to show off new technology.”

Next weak ass excuse please. I’m waiting.

P.S. I saw you didn’t bother to reply to any of my valid points about the depthless imagination of George Lucas and the media that backs up the fact he’s as uncreative as all the Abrams hater purport him to be.

I loved The Lion King, The Croods, Dispicable Me, Epic,….etc etc. I could go on and on. There are plenty of kid movies and shows I find enjoyable, as do millions of other adults.

The PT’s may have been made to cater to kids, but it doesnt change the fact they are shit movies.

Also the kids angle is the real rub, and its what people SHOULD be pissed off about. Lucas knew that as long as the movies looked good, and had robots and ships and cool creatures in them and lots of toys on the shelf to buy, that a new generation of kids would be his next generation of cash cows for his empire, ripe for the milking. Thats all it was about. Money. Thats why he shit on the rest of us and gave us crap. He could have done both and rewarded those of us who grew up giving him money, all the time, year after year. Instead he shit on us and made total shit for movies in the PT’s and rolled in his pile of money laughing.

This poster is awesome. Everything looks great. No Luke is the only bad thing. As soon as I saw the parallel poses of Rey and Kylo Ren I thought: Big hint here! Starkiller base looks good too. No matter what lipstick you put on it though, or how you try to spin it, Starkiller base is just the Death Star 2.0. Saying: But it destroys stars now, not just planets, does not change the fact that we now have the exact same storyline/idea for the THIRD time now. Oh well. 1) There is concept art with a female holding a lightsaber. 2) Holding a lightsaber doesn’t make him a Jedi. Anyone can turn on a lightsaber. Solo used a lightsaber easily in ESB.

You don’t put a character wielding a lightsaber on your theatrical poster if he’s not a Force Sensitive soon to be Jedi in training. Seriously.

          Why not?

          • October 19, 2015 at 4:08 am

Because it states the obvious; I am a Jedi (Or a Sith depending on the color of the blade). A light saber in Star Wars identifies you as a member of a specific order; one that uses the Force no matter its alignment, principles, or name.

And this is a medium of advertisement for the film which spells out elements of the story. Do you think they’re going to have a prominent location on a theatrical poster for a character who OOPS picked up a light saber? Because, that’s epic, right? “HEY GUYS, FOUND THIS” Strike a pose.

Which other Star Wars poster out of 6 films….Shit, no, wait. Find me ANY Star Wars art that is a cover for something. One that has a character who is NOT Sith. Who is NOT a Jedi. Who is not FORCE SENSITIVE at all. Wielding a light saber.

It can be a comic. Or a novel. Or a movie. Or a cartoon. Even a video game. You find it for me. It will answer your question when you can’t.

    • October 18, 2015 at 8:19 pm
      Permalink

Finn may use a lightsaber in self defense, doesn’t mean he will become a Jedi. There’s a difference. Han isn’t shown wielding one on a poster because he didn’t use it in a fight, however it’s likely that Finn will. I think there is a high chance that Finn will follow the Jedi path, but that’s based on my assumptions rather than actual evidence. There’s also an Empire Strikes Back poster with Vader wielding 2 lightsabers, that doesn’t happen in the film, but it’s in the poster. So until we’ve seen the film, anything is open to speculation. And also, JJ is the King of stringing people along….

Little disappointing. Overcrowded and overly colorful. It does not feels subtle and iconic as the previous ones. It kinda looks like fan made (while some that are fanmade potentially looked even better). I would be alot happier if they chose it to be more like this: https://a.disquscdn.com/get?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.starwarsnewsnet.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2015%2F06%2FPoster.jpg&key=xJWKo6WLM7WoGc09A6qvkA&w=600&h=271 Now that’s a classic!

Interesting fact: Captain Phasma is on the poster but Gwendoline Christie was not credited, while Mark Hamill has credit but Luke is nowhere to be seen.

p.s. Starkiller weapon aka DS3 is little disappointing as unoriginal (although it does have that original classic concept from the 80’s).

I love that they don’t show Luke and Snoke. I’d love to see the movie waiting for the big reveals. Pretty rare these days. Keep them for the movie. That’s fine.

Also, I don’t know why some people are still complaining about a super weapon that looks like the death star. I mean, what could possibly surpass a Death Star in power ? Nothing except a bigger Super weapon or bigger DS. It cannot just be a big laser canon or a big spaceship. Would not make sense.

And here ladies and gents is what we call an internet troll.

They are a common species of parasitic humanoid that feed off anger and general negativity of other’s passions as well as likes.

They live in deep dark cellars of people’s basements or shaded rooms, usually their parents, and occasionally leave their dwelling in search of junk food or soft drinks such as Mountain Dew or Dr. Pepper.
They are generally very proud and very cynical creatures and do not handle positive vibes or feelings well. If they see others being happy or excited about something they immediately see the worst and most negative aspects of it and will try to bring the positive outlook down to a neutral or negative one.

They usually try to mask their cynicism and sometimes pedantic tendencies by saying that they are realists and it is folly to believe that anything can be good anymore. The more “educated, credible, or passionate” the troll the more dangerous it is.

If you happen across an internet troll your best defense is to ignore it completely and by doing so cause them to give up their crusade of trolling because they aren’t getting the attention they crave. It can be very difficult to ignore one, but it is possible with strong willpower or training in handling trolls. You cannot ever truly vanquish an internet troll completely and the harder you try to do so the more exhausting and hostile you will become.

Finn’s jacket is perfectly Star Wars. Also, remember to use capital letters and punctuation.
“No one can make better star wars because no one has georges brain and mind.”
Considering that the 2009 Star Trek film (as well as most of Clone Wars, Rebels, and several video games, including Knights of the Old Republic) was “better Star Wars” than the prequels, I have to disagree with that.

Yes, and of course your beloved prequels have actors staring at the mouths of CGI rendered characters instead of their eyes as they were meaning to because they had no idea where to actually look at the invisible space next to them?

And the story of Episode I. The excitement of seeing how the Naboo trade embargo would end up! And the timely death of an exciting villain that was completely pointless and to be replaced with what essentially amounts to a cameo of an esteemed actor who received poor coaching and direction in his performance for the second and third films making him a less than believable villain let alone character and the awful CGI used to replace his head since he was too old to have a light saber fight and..Should I go on?

I’m a huge original Trek fan. Love all of the movies and the series. The 2009 reboot was excellent; it captured the essence of the characters, the world, and the show while transmuting it into something entertaining to watch for a modern audience that appealed to EVERYONE and not just fans of Star Trek.

That’s a huge accomplishment. Also, the damn film felt more like Star Wars than Star Trek, so why are you complaining?

          Because you can.

Where will be these new “film makers” whitout george ? Jerking in some cave .

I love people who defend a movie that had lines like: “i hate sand”, and where the lead guy kills a whole group of kids and then lectures another guy about morality. Thats some good writing there…

As a kid, the excitement in TPM was to see the Queen escape from an invasion and later get her planet back from the villains. I don’t know anything about a tax embargo or anything. All I know was that a bunch of bad guys just invaded a planet under the orders of this mysterious figure that they call Darth Sidious. And this Darth Sidious intrigued me. What was his plan to invade Naboo? Why does he even care? I want to see more of him.

Because George made the prequels, which were not very good at all. The story was terrible, the direction was abysmal, his obsession with the digital back lot made Clones and Sith look like a cartoon, and his casting choices were also based on his “vision” rather than if the actor in question could recite a line and sound convincing.

Considering the reception from Rotten Tomatoes, I say the prequels were quite well-recieved amongst critics. 80% for Revenge of the Sith. 67% for Attack of the Clones. Even Phantom Menace gets a mixed review of 57% (and that was from the re-release). None of them really universally panned like that Movie Pilot of The Clone Wars, which got 18% approval. And we know how the television series turned out. Keep in mind that the Internet has a tendency to exaggerate opinions and facts.

Originally Lucas intended for the Death Star to be continuous throughout all of the Star Wars episodes. He thought it would appear in all 9, then he decided 6, then 3… then he was so certain that the film would flop, so he just destroyed it at the end of A New Hope. So I’m not really surprised they’ve come up with another planet destroyer or ‘star killer’. Honest question: why would you insist on “originality” when Star Wars – while great and exciting and stunning – has never been (and I mean since 1977) even remotely original?

          • October 19, 2015 at 2:11 am

You can definitely make a fatalistic argument that nothing is original and everything just borrows from something that came before it. Which is true on a certain level. We don’t live in a vacuum and we’re all influenced by what we’ve read, watched, and listened to when we go to create something “new.”

However, I think it’s pretty reasonable for them to, at the very least, not just repeat something that’s already been done in the series.

Yeah, except that every single movie in the series, so far, has repeated a LOT of what the previou(s) movie did – and this is true both for the OT and the PT (and between the two). And, most of the time, it worked, so I really don’t understand the point, here.

          • October 19, 2015 at 6:13 pm

The problem with space opera is that it IS repetitive.

Always a jail break, always a chase, everybody gets captured, even our heroes tend to get captured every movie, and bad guys do stupid things like be overconfident – which is why people like ESB and, to a certain extent, ROTS – the bad guys win, but the other 4 are very very repetitive – good guys get into stupid situation, get annoyed at one another, and overcome because they come together as a group. Its the same thing over and over – the characters get revised and updated, the weapons, i.e. the cool stuff.

It is repetitive. And yes, Star Wars is just Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers – but actually done WELL, which is why it is so respected.

Let’s think about some sequels that most people agree are good: Empire Strikes Back, Captain America Winter Soldier, and Aliens (there are many more). These are all good movies because they continue the story of the first movie without simply repeating what’s already been done.

-A New Hope was an adventure of two groups fighting out an external struggle while Empire focused on more mystical aspects of the Force and an inward struggle of dark versus light and was more personal all around.
-Captain America was a WW2 period piece with a Band of Brothers feel. Winter Soldeir was a spy thriller that commented on our modern environment of government surveillance.
-Alien was a suspense movie and Aliens was a horror movie.

Iron Man 2 was disappointing to me because in the end of the movie Iron Man fights another guy in a robot suit… just like in the first movie. Return of the Jedi was disappointing in a way because a major plot point was the exact same as A New Hope: blow up the Death Star. Sure, different people did the blowing up and they did it in a different way, but at the end of the day they blew up a Death Star… again. They did the first part of the movie right (revisit Tatooine and do something completely different there) and the last part of the movie wrong (revisit the Death Star and do the exact same thing).

A good example of something in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith that rubbed me the wrong way is that they teased glimpses of the Death Star on Geonosis when Dooku is escaping and right before Mace Windu confronts Palpatine. They are just shoving in things for nostalgia in substitute of substance or something new. It’s like they’re saying, “Hey, here’s something from a movie that you like. That means you’ll like this movie, too! Right! Right?”

As far as you’re question goes, do I think they would just forget about the most powerful weapon ever created just because the last two were destroyed bye terrorists and just throw the concept away? Yes. That strategy clearly doesn’t work. If something doesn’t work, you should try something else. What is threatening about an enemy that keeps on trying the exact same thing and keeps on failing? It makes the Empire look more like a comical figure in the vein of Pinky and the Brain rather than a serious military force with the foresight to not put all of their eggs in the Death Star basket.

The evolution of the most advanced technology ever created seem’s like a no brainer to me..but ….to each their own I guess. Enjoy not liking one of the greatest movie’s ever made as you are upset because you cant comprehend or understand why they didn’t throw away the greatest technology ever created that would grant them the ultimate control over the universe….congrats.

I’m sure I’ll enjoy the movie. I just hope that a world destroying super weapon isn’t part of the plot.

The Death Star clearly wasn’t “the greatest technology ever created that would grant them the ultimate control over the universe,” because it failed. Twice. Not to mention that “the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of The Force.”

The Imperial tacticians should find a new strategy and the movie writers should not use this already explored trope.

What credit should Lucas get for the film? He had nothing to do with it aside from the OT characters and ship names. He’ll get at least that credit in the end credits and probably a special thanks. Otherwise, Lucas wasn’t involved with this film.

        So GO AWAY.

I was grateful to the man, until he became a pompous blow hard who continued to ruin the films he gave us when he had a modicum of talent and luck on his side.

He’s treated those of us who protested his crap decisions with the prequel films and the Indiana Jones flick that shall not be named like we’re peasants serving his feudal Lordship.

I have invested so much time of my life in Star Wars, spent thousands and thousands of dollars on his merchandise and paraded his work around as if it were my own sacred ark to be coveted and cherished.

And for this? And those just like me? We got Jar Jar Binks. An over reliance on CGI. Poor casting. Poor story. And the obvious picture that there is NO ONE who had the balls to stand up to him during the making of these films and say “George, this is a bad idea.”

So you can happily sit there and say George is perfect, he made no mistakes, and claim that really crap films are SUBLIME because his name and Star Wars is on them, and all you do is prove what people say in very uncomplimentary ways about fanboys.

NO..George didn’t care about star wars fans..and guess what buddy? He never has. He only cared about making the movies “HE” wanted to make. He simply invited us into his mind.He obviously hoped we would all like the movies so he could further “HIS” love for making movies for young generations. I hated the prequels, and obviously you did to. but guess what? every child on the planet LOVED them. he didn’t make those movie’s for us. He made the movie’s he wanted to make…because he COULD.he told the story that was in HIS mind, which was the whole reason he started his own company. I don’t hate the man because he made a horrible trilogy, I could go watch the OT anytime I wanted..and guess what..he DID not even write the OT. he simply created the characters. HE made a crack at telling the stories his way, most people don’t like them..oh well. There are major holes in the story in almost every scene of the prequels..He didn’t have Kasden with him to correct the mistakes and nobody had balls to tell him he was wrong, Kasden didn’t wasn’t to work on them, George even tried to recruit him. George was on his own. he made the movies his way, he does not need to apologize for it.his goals were to make the movie how he wanted , to invent new technology and sell his product. The real product was not the movie’s. It was the technology. He just used Star Wars as a means to develop and sell it, he actually says this HIMSELF, if you watch the making of Episode 1 on disc 2..kinda sad…yes. and unfortunate. But he did it his way, and could give a rat’s ass what anyone thought. and I got to respect him for that alone if anything. Without that man you wouldn’t have any of this…so you should probably just sit back and sorta…stfu. Jar jar this and Jar Jar that…it is really annoying when people throw that card out. Considering from jump street Lucas said he made these movies for young people.I did not like Jar Jar either, but when I was introduced to him I was also an adult ( I saw the original when I was 6 years old when they re released it in celebration of the release of The Emire Strikes Back in 1980). Everyone hated Barney too, but every child on the effin planet loved him.Goofy is probably annoying to you now..but I bet when you were five years old you probably loved him.

Star Wars isn’t Barney. And he did have a responsibility to his fans to make a movie that didn’t suck. Just one, not even three. He failed to do that. Glad you think he’s ballsy for making films that no one cares about but himself. To me that’s arrogant and egotistical. Film isn’t supposed to be about just one person, and with Star Wars he was literally PROPPED up by an international community that adored him.

And they forgave him for Episode I, because he got feedback. And he largely ignored it, and made Episode II. Then when III came around he ALMOST started listening to other people, but still ultimately failed.

Of course he says he made the movies JUST to propagate the technology. He failed, he knows he did, so he makes excuses. He tends to do that a lot because he’s forgotten what it’s like to hear people tell him, “Hey man. You suck.” He doesn’t like it, and he’s sat alone atop the mountain that Star Wars built for so long he didn’t remember that he’s just a mortal man who can write schtick just as bad as Uwe Bolle.

I find it funny how just above some idiot named Filip bitches about the new movie (that noone has even seen yet) and then follows up by arguing with you about what great movies the PT’s are and how his whole family loves them. Look, if you think the PT’s are good movies, in any way shape or form, then your opinion on ANY movie, especially one that hasnt even come out yet is completely and utterly crap.

Ignore the other idiot ‘critic’. Hes wrong, MOST Star Wars fans hate the PT’s. I mean I get it, if you watched the PT’s as a child you have that Star Wars nostalgia and you feel like they are your movies, but now that your grown up (not speaking about you, just PT lovers in general) its time to be truthful and call a spade a spade. Or in the case of the PT’s a turd a turn is a turd is a turd.

LOL seriously? Get a grip. GL made billions of dollars because his fans loved the OT. THAT money gave him the power to make the PT’s. So without the fans he wouldnt have been able to tell any story, whether alone his. So to say he didnt owe it to the fans to make good movies just for the sake of making good movies is the stupidest sh*t ive ever heard.

George Lucas made the PT’s for the money, and he didnt care that the fans deserved an actual product worthy of the Star Wars universe. He knew that fans would line up in millions and buy his crap because it was called Star Wars. He counted on that and if you look at the box office numbers he was right. There is NO way he watched those finished movies after they were done, and didnt sit there and think “that movie was really bad”. There were people around him that wanted to tell him the movies sucked but were too scared of Lucas’s ego to say anything.

Lucas used us for his bankroll. He could have actually put some effort into the PT’s and gave us 3 great, hell even just good movies. Instead he gave us 3 horrible pieces of crap; and he knew he did it, and he laughed all the way to the bank.

And people like you continue to defend him.

listen, you really put yourself out there with this post. NOBODY would say that George is perfect. Few people say that the prequels are quality. But you go way too far to say that Lucas treated you anyway. or that he owes you something because of your dedication to his art. He made movies. David Lynch makes movies. Lynch makes movies the way he wants to. Lucas makes movies the way he wants to. Imagine what sort of a response Twin Peaks fans would get if they swarmed Lynch’s life with complaints or suggestions about what should be in the new Twin Peaks series. Film-makers who make movies based on what they believe (or “know”) the fans want are basically the lowest form or “artist” you can imagine. (and to be honest, i think the reason Ep. 1 sucks is because he was trying to make too many people happy) If you know what is needed for a great star wars flick, why don’t you write episode 8 or 9? if you can’t appreciate anything from the prequels, it’s because you are bitter. There are a ton of things in each movie that make u snooze or roll your eyes. but there are also a ton of scenes, characters, and planets that are pretty awesome. Star Wars isn’t about you.

Wrong. He was only able to make movies because FANS by the millions bought his shit. He didnt just make them because he could. He owed the Fans. Its no different than paying a starting QB in the NFL millions of dollars a year to play football for your home team and then actually expecting that player to play well and give you a winning product.

Lucas got paid, then he got a God complex, then he got greedy.

And in the end he told us all to bend over, grab our ankles, and take it up the tail pipe, and we better smile while its happening and thank him for the a** raping.

What makes me sick is the PT apologists who continue to shove this bullsh*t narrative down our throat that the movies were in any way shape or form “good movies”. I would have settled for just “ok”. Instead we got insulted with 3 pieces of banta dung.

Its like someone standing next to you pointing at a Dodge Neon and telling you its a BMW 300. You can see with your own eyes thats its a Dodge yet somehow they whole heartily believe and want you to believe its a BMW.

I agree and people who defend Lucas and say “well he did it to tell his story, he didnt do it for you..” those people make me sick.

Lets look at some facts here ok: he made ANH the way he wanted to make it because it was his story. He gets that pass. But only the wildly huge success of that movie, WHICH HAPPENED BECAUSE OF HIS (new FANS), gave him the financial and hollywood politic clout to continue his story. Without the millions and millions in sales from tickets and merchandise he would never have been able to make another 5 movies.

People act like he used all his own money to make the PT’s so it was his right to make them any way he wanted. He used the studios money. Even Lucas Films / Lucas Arts are corporations, so the money was NOT coming out of his pocket. Again these things only existed because of the millions of people who bought his merchandise and paid for things that dealt with his trademark.

Absolutely he had an obligation to thank his fans who made him un-godly rich to make good movies. Movies with good acting, scripts, story lines. He didnt do that and in the process shit on all of us.

Im glad Disney threw his stuff to the curb. We deserve to have a production company that WANTS to tell a good story and give the Star Wars fans a good movie. Now time will tell if they deliver but at least they are trying.

You’re condemning a film as ruined before we’ve even seen it? Or a full a trailer? Seriously bro. The box office speaks volumes. It shows how much people like the movie, by going to see it. Once, twice, three times. And not just the die hard Star Wars fans, but everyone else.

It’s super awesome that you saw RoTS 3 times. I saw Episode I three times, I camped for tickets. I saw AoTC 5 times in the same day, and I saw Sith 3 times too. By the time I got to Sith, I didn’t care anymore because I had accepted over a period of years that the movies were in fact bad. Sith had it’s ups, but then spoiled the ending. Yeah, I know I can hear you from here bro.

            NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Sorry, but yes. Bad films. Our favorite space wizards were there, but even they couldn’t salvage the utter travesty that Lucas forced on us in terms of terrible casting, acting, and complete lack of story.

Even his idea of directing CGI was contrived. I saw an interview before the new Avenger’s came out with Sam Jackson. He was talking about how on AoTC George just told him to pretend he was fighting a monster the size of an SUV, didn’t give him anymore direction then that. Then he let the CGI wizards fill in the blanks. You CAN TELL this was his limited direction style in AoTC big time. There are literally dozens of shots with Jedi just waving their laser swords around and random carnage happening around them. It is SO visible and noticeable it’s not even funny.

He could of put forth some effort, and oh, I don’t know, constructed a narrative for the actors and then relayed this to his effects guys, instead of just telling them to wave their light sabers around and play pretend,.

Not as much as in prequels that is true but yes, there is blue screen in originals. But I think you already knew this. Also lucas said it himself that star wars are his movies, that he made them for himself in the first place, so it is normal that many people do not understand them correctly as lucas did. I never said Lucas didn’t use blue screen in the original films. My complaint was that Episodes II & III were inundated with digital back drops that have aged *terribly*. Episode I has held up remarkably well because a lot of the locations and sets were real with elements of digital back drops. Scoot to AoTC, and you have cartoony environments that have odd lighting effects when compared to what’s being directed on the actors. And again, people staring at characters in weird ways when conversing with them because they’re not there and the direction was poor.

I get you’re a Star Wars fan, and that’s awesome. Me too. I don’t like the prequels as a whole, but there are elements that made me happy. Just in the end, I don’t enjoy watching them at all. I rarely pop one in because it’s just so very bad from start to finish. My issue with you is you’re trolling a movie that hasn’t even COME OUT YET. And deciding it’s bad.

Guess what? If it’s bad. I will be right here with you saying “Wow, TFA was awful. WTF Disney and JJ!? At least you did what George would have! Sucked.”

So my question to you, uber Star Wars fan, is why you’re so down on a film that hasn’t been released and again is a continuation of a story you claim to love and argue to incorporate inclusively into all of our lives because it is Star Wars whether we like it or not.

Guess what! So is the next film.

There’s a great documentary you should watch. It’s called “The People vs. George Lucas”. And the film asks if the franchise had truly changed hands in ownership from Lucas to the fans who are truly responsible for making Star Wars what it is today. My opinion is yeah, the fans own it. We’re the people who perpetuate it, argue about it for hours on the internet in stupid forums because it’s an important part of our lives, it changed us, guided us, and that’s pretty sad and silly but it’s a powerful force (pun intended) that affected us none the less.

Back in 2012 when they announced this I was as angry as you. But then I sobered up and listened to what people had to say on what they were going to do with it. I realized that Disney owned Marvel and had done right by those properties and made a fun new universe I enjoyed in the movies. So could they mess up Star Wars that badly? There’s a very good chance since THEY ARE CATERING TO WE THE PEOPLE OF STAR WARS that no, they won’t.

But we’ll see. Time will tell. Hating something before it comes out is dumb. Watch it, then decide if you hate it. You’ll seem so much less silly Dec 19th.

            1. I never said that TFA will be trash, in some comment I said that I still hope it will be epic.
            2. The locations in aotc were not only cg, there were real sets too.
            3. Acting with real people is I would say pretty easy, at least for actors, little practise in front of mirro and you can hadle it too, but acting with something or someone who is not really there, thats a real acting because is not as easy as the first option so the actors must really try hard and actually ACT, so form me those people are really good actors whit acting tallent.
            4. I saw some of the documentaries, as well as empire of dreams, “star wars mythology” or “from puppets to pixels” and other bonuses from dvd’s like “within a minute” , “becoming obi-wan” and so on, which reminds me that abrams dont even bother to call ewan and ask him if he dont want to ve in the movie, because absence of ghosts will be major mistake. Yes it is my opinion and those things I said are real facts….Star Wars is made not for only one generation but for many others. Episode I was made especially for young audience, thats why jar-jar is there and thats why they have that little as you said cartoonish effect in prequels, because 8-12 kids dont care about politics because they dont understand what policy and political talks are about, that comes later. He must put some elements and character that young kids can identify with. They have jar-jar, anakin, podracing and young pretty queen, theese are the things that catch young child on star wars wave. Also George want to show audience the age when jedi flourish, when there was not only few of them, that is exactly where episode I and III take place. Also the scene in aotc in front of niagara waterfalls is great, you can feel piece and love in the air and at the same time you know that this will be their doom. Because that is what star wars story is about…about young and gifted jedi with fear of loss and with great love to the two important persons in his life at the same time, because only from deep and unrequited love can rise something as cruel and evil as vader is. So the saga goes on smoothly from 1 to 6. Oh and about the cg characters, whatch “from puppets to pixels”. Forgive me but dont try to tell me that you dont want to see yoda in some lightsaber fight. Everyone want to see that badass jedi master fight some sith scum, but imagine puppet instead of cg character, it will look ridiculous and funny and it will not work in any way. I bet my ass that when you saw hayden in ep.6 as ghost you got hearth attack. But that was really smart move and it fit the main punch line. This scene suppose to told you that everyone even someone like vader can be saved and turned back to light side. MTFBWY

And you’re like nerd unable to answer one simple question, which shouldn’t be a problem for person who saw episode III so many times ij cinema. That is because I speak true, real facts instead of talking the same rubbish you found on junkyard called internet and with lack of true understanding whole saga. I dont need some internet forums or box office digits to make my own picture about movie. Also if you dont like prequels why you went so manny times to cinema? Sounds like wasting money to me, because if I dont like some movie, I will see it once maybe twice in cinema and maybe once at home. Also the new tfa trailer is more like battlefront trailer, with warp drive instead of hyperdrive and lensflare like hell in ren scene. How was ren able to collect vaders helmet ? He was burn to dust on endor in bonfire like hell. But this last trailer is really the best one because of john williams amazing soundtrack and we finally hear actors talking. So far so good. Hope the story will be good. MTFBWY

Now, I really like this poster. It reminds me of what Drew Struzan did for the other films, especially the prequels (one of the few actually good things about those films). It’s cool and it feel like Star Wars to me.
While I’ll admit that I don’t want another superweapon, I can get past that if the film is enjoyable. We haven’t seen it yet, so we should just let it go and just enjoy the film. Also, while it does have a Death Star vibe to it, I do like how the…um…circular thing isn’t like the Death Star’s dish. It’s more like a furnace and looks cool.

No, no the prequels aren’t great. The acting is most bad, there is way too much cg, and they completely fail on a storytelling level. I’ve picked them apart to such an extent that it is horrifying that no one stood up to Lucas anywhere in their production. And I don’t mean CinemaSins like complaints, I mean serious, major flaws.
I may have affection for the prequels due to nostalgia and the fact I love Star Wars, but they aren’t great.

you are dead on with the furnace comment. You are going to need a super heated laser to be able to destroy a Sun, and building it into an Ice Planet is probably the only thing that would keep a weapon like this’ core cool to keep it from destroying everything around it when it is fired. I get how some would be nervous about the movie because of the Super weapon. But if you think about it, it only makes sense. I know I have already said this on this article’s comments. But I doubt they would just scrap the technology of the most advanced weapon ever created and completely ignore it.This thing has been being designed since Palpatine started his master’s plan well before the story of Episode 1. They are just going to improve on the concept and make it more evolved and advanced. Just like everything else in this film they have shown as far as the new ships new at-at’s etc. That weapon technology in my opinion is just as significant to the saga as the force itself and the lightsaber and probably only could have been designed by a force user (Palpatine). The Death star laser was created from a Kyber crystal. It wouldn’t surprise me if this new laser shared the same tech as what Kylo’s blade is made from. I could be wayyyyyyy off though obviously. haha

    A FEW THINGS:
No Luke =( =( =( contrary to many peoples opinions, I think they are holding back on Luke, not because of a minor role, but to maintain the ‘where is Luke Skywalker’ mystery that JJ has goin on. Even if luke originally had a minor role, surely the major backlash due to the leaks would have resulted in some re shoots.
-Posters cool. A bit too much going on tho.
-find it interesting that mark Hamill is second credited. I was expecting him to be FIRST credit like in the originals, or like “with max von sydow and Mark Hamill’. I wish it were one of these two, contrary to the opinion of some fan boys and JJ apparently, Luke/Hamill is the important figure in star wars. He should be first credited. Han solo is a side-kick co-lead. Luke’s the shit.
-surely if they gave Arndt a writing credit, they’d have to give Lucas a story credit, seeing as the first draft was written off Georges treatments.

cool theory and I can see kind of why you would think that, but Leia’s super weapon “The Sledgehammer” is a spacecraft. Able to destroy Ships the size of Star Destroyers with one blast. ” Starkiller base” is an Ice Planet constructed into a weapon.

Rey’s weapon is a staff not unlike the ones that grievous guards used in the prequel’s. it is a staff that is introduced in the new book weapon of a Jedi, Featuring Luke’s first Duel with a character named Sarco Plank who we already know is in this movie and have saw picture’s of (on Jakku). only..he is not holding his staff. He is also a Scavenger, just like Rey, so it will be interested on seeing how the two are linked.
The pictures of his staff in the book look exactly like the staff Rey holds..and you can bet on Kylo being Luke’s son.

Nice poster so far. In my opinion that “death star” can be a weapon resistance made in order to have the advantage on the Imperial remnants and remnants are going to capture it like there is no tomorrow.

Rey and Ren are in parallel? Ok, they can be brother and sister, why not? Solo or Skywalker line, but who is the mother in the second one?

This was one of my biggest takes on the poster as well. Everything on the poster is a mixed bag. The other interesting thing is how small Maz Kanata is. Sorta like the new Yoda. Hmm, took another look and do find it interesting that both Han and Leia are close together and looking in the same direction, while “The Ren” and Rey are “aligned” and appear to be both focused on the same thing… Mostly though I wonder why “The Ren” is the largest character in the picture…

What George Lucas says Star Wars means:

Rose: They wanna do well by their children. They wanna live a good life. They wanna…

Lucas: Well, it’s something, it’s something that I came up with uhhh that, the idea of why do we think the way we think? Why do we do what we do? Why do we form our society the way we form it? It was something that I did when I was about eight years old. My mother, when she was putting me to bed, I asked her a question. I said mom? If there’s only one god, why are there so many religions?

    Rose: heheheheheh

Lucas: And, it’s a question that has fascinated me ever
since. You know, and if you really look at it and you say well, most people
would say well, what’s the difference between a Shiite and a Sunni? What’s the
difference between a Catholic and a Protestant? Well are they any different? Or
we all believe in the Jewish god, but what about the Jewish god and the gods
that came before and the you know, Buddhism is a little bit different but in
the end if you think of it as one god well then you say everybody expresses it
differently but it’s still you know? Basically don’t kill people and be
compassionate and love people, and so that’s basically all Star Wars is.

    Rose: Alright

Now, if Luke has lost the plot and is unstable, that could explain the “fiery” look of the red cross guard saber, but then that is suggesting Luke is Ren…

Thanks Al, I always thought Luke was too busy dragging his father to the Imperial Shuttle to retrieve his light saber, but then I guess a quick “force grab” would have done it…

Luke’s saber in ROTJ being green was a film production necessity – a blue lightsaber would not have printed well against the blue Tatooine sky. Its color has no deeper meaning.

Interesting point of view Frank, I had never considered that before. I was always of the belief that the crystal/colour chosen for a light saber had intrinsic links to the force character of the adept… this could debunk a whole school of thought regarding what represents light vs dark, good vs evil…

Damn, you just got me thinking about Mace Windu and his purple light saber… and once I started thinking of Mace and his “bad ass” image (even being a Jedi Master I felt he was “controlled aggression”) (echoes of Yoda’s “control, you must learn control” playing in the background…), I think of Finn, and the whole “aggresive” front John has played from the start… Finn related to Mace??? Would explain the force sensitivity…

They just copy pasted the stormtroopers from the left, mirrored them and put them on the right (or the other way around), for such a production I find that a very cheap solution.

Unfortunately I must agree, the coast to coast spread of 1st Order Troopers at the bottom of the poster just doesn’t look right from a story point of view, seems they’re just there to make the picture “look balanced…”

They are not copy pasted, count the stormtroopers and look at where they are standing.

One line of troopers is further away than the other which makes them look different. Just isolate the units, and compare the last 3 of both sides, then the fourth from the back hilts back a little, and so on.. Then the first flametrooper you come across has a slightly longer neck, same goes for the flametrooper in the same position on the opposite site. I’m 100% sure, there is no doubt.

Pretty cool that they literally built a giant laser cannon into a planet.

Still thinking it’s a drive unit of some kind, a massive laser cannon doesn’t make much sense when the original Death Star could destroy a whole planet and DS2 was even more powerful… but if destroying a SUN is the objective…

You might be right. I just think turning a planet into a literal weapon is an interesting idea. I just hope the TFA explains the impact trade tariffs are having on the First Order.

Oh, I wasn’t intending to say the planet isn’t a weapon, just what we see in the poster is the drive unit of the planet. I can’t see the point of having a planet as a “super weapon” unless it can actually move… my feelings about it being a “giant laser” are unresolved, I think this would be far too, how to say?… unoriginal? If this is the case then “reboot” would the keyword, and I think that would burn far too many established fans…

Some people said that 1st Order built the new laser inside an iced surface planet in order to cool down the laser but it wouldn´t work cuz, as opposite the cold surface, the interior of a continent/planet is hotter than the surface.

Maybe the interior heat of the planet contributes to powering the laser.

Pretty unoriginal if they have a 3rd death star. I mean dd they not learn from their mistakes after getting 2 blown up?

    • October 19, 2015 at 7:50 pm
      Permalink

It’s not a death star. It’s the snow planet with a deep trench excavated into it to house the super laser. So, essentially it does what the death star did without the threat of the entire thing being blown up. The laser might be taken out by enemies, but then you would be able to repair it, whereas an exploded death star was not being fixed.

I still feel like this is unoriginal; logically, it makes perfect sense to simply fix the errors of the first two Death Stars and continue obliterating whatever you like, but for a movie, seeing a planet-esque superweapon for the third time is too much.

First off let me say that my mis-givings about this poster do nothing to temper my raging enthusiasm for this movie. It is also possible that I will grow to like most of what im seeing on the poster. I didnt like Rey, Finn, Po as names when I first heard them. I hated the name Snoke. Captain Plasma really? All of that has grown on me and I like it all just fine now. Now the names go on like a good pair of worn in jeans.

    As for my mis-givings:

    – Its too busy for my taste. Sometimes simple is better. They didnt need to fit everyone on this poster. Sure looks like they tried. By trying to fit so much in, yet also leaving out Luke, they have all the internet trolls crying about “no Luke” , “oh God told you there was no Luke in this movie”…etc etc. Also this poster has too many colors. I agree with someone here who posted that it looks computer generated and not at all like an original painting.

    – The Death Star. I hate the idea of another Super Weapon. Im ok with a rehash of OT material, but I didnt like the idea of a second death star in ROTJ, so this one really irks me. Maybe in context of the movie it will be done right and wont even be an issue. For now im disappointed. Up till this point I was hoping that the Super Weapon was one of the rumors that would turn out to be false.

    – Finn holding a lightsaber. I know its too early to say who is a Jedi and who isnt; but it sure looks like Finn is setting up to be the new Jedi in this ST. I dont know why, but I really like Daisy and she seemed to me to be a perfect fit for a Jedi. I was looking forward to seeing her as a Jedi.

Oh well until I see the movie its hard to put everything in context. im pretty optimistic because the first 2 teasers were awesome! Also this cast seems to be much better than the PT cast (Ewan and Liiam not including). Im hoping we get at least a little context out of tonight’s trailer. Cant wait!

Holy Sith, that planetary superweapon is crazy as fuck!

I suppose it’s using the planet’s powerful core to launch somekind of antimatter beam through hyperspace while generating its own EM shield around and… oops…

For those of you who don’t know, this masterpiece was created by the famous artist Drew Struzan. His legacy of amazing artwork can be viewed at his website:

    http://www.drewstruzan.com

There was even a 2013 documentary, “Drew: The Man Behind the Poster”, made about him chronicling his life and how influential and impactful his artwork has been for the movie industry since the 70’s. One of the highlights is when Harrison Ford personally thanks him for “making me look so good all these years”.

This artwork was 100% hand made. There was no Photoshop involved, or copying and pasting of anything in regards to the original painting. If were to hazard a guess, think this painting was digitally touched up for post production to further enhance and balance out the color palette as well as the blooming effect for the lasers and lightsabers, but this was otherwise a hand painted movie poster. That is what makes it so exceptionally amazing. There is no substitute for the raw genius and artistry of guys like Drew Struzan, John Williams, Ben Burtt, Ralph Mcquarrie, etc. We are extremely fortunate so many of the original creators were around to contribute to this new film. The prospect of future Star Wars movies being made without the signature sound of John Williams’ helming the music or Ben Burrt’s sound design is hard to imagine. Most people don’t realize how all of those elements are absolutely crucial to the overall impact of a film.

It puts a bit of a sour feeling in my stomach, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense that the first order’s directive would be to perfect the empire’s plot by constructing an even more devastating and impenetrable battle station as a way of showing the rebellion (and the audience) that the war is far from over. Plus, I would assume that building the station into a planet would eliminate the Death Star design flaw. I just can’t help but feel like the whole thing kinda undermines the major threat in the original trilogy.
