SW7N Review: Marvel’s Star Wars #8

Star Wars #8

So, it’s been a while since we saw our three heroes. With the Obi-Wan Kenobi interlude #7, we were all still left wondering what the story is with Mrs. Solo. Sorry to say, you’re not going to get much more information. Her name is Sana and Han seems quite adamant she is not his wife. She is a bounty hunter and clearly out to bring Han back into the light of wedded bliss. Predictably, Sana and Leia don’t really hit it off well. All of this is unraveling as a fleet of TIE Fighters searches the planet for the stolen Imperial shuttle. Sana has plans for them all…

Star Wars #8

Meanwhile, Luke was not quite as pleased as the rest of us with Obi-Wan’s journal. The not-yet-Jedi seems to have hoped for a guide on lightsaber fighting. Undeterred, Luke sets of for the metropolis covered world Nar Shadda, The Smuggler’s Moon. At first glance, it looks very much like Coruscant. Once Luke walks us through the door of the seediest bar he can find you realize it’s just a much bigger Mos Eisley. Luke is looking to find his next Han Solo, someone who can get him to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. I wonder who will s going to break the news to Luke that the former home of the Jedi is where old Sheev hangs his hat.

Star Wars #8

Lightsabers appear to be hot commodities, as the bar keep who promises he can get Luke where he needs to go only asks that as payment. Before they can settle on a price, an patron of the same species as Kasmir from my earlier Kanan review, snatches the lightsaber and starts the chase I imagine we will witness in issue #9.

Star Wars #8

I have to say, this being the beginning of a new arc, I’m not crazy about the frantic pace of the story. I understand each issue is a piece of a bigger story, but the last few issues featuring the big 3 has been a lot of chases and claustrophobic fights. If there is any series that should focus on character development and slow burning plot, this should be the one. This issue has the slow burn of a fuse running to a pack of firecrackers. This is the first issue, so I will hold my judgement in check and maybe we are just off to a quick start. The whole might still be greater than the…you know what I mean.

Star Wars #8

The artwork has been handed off to artist Stuart Immonen. It’s much more washed out than the previous artwork when it comes to facial detail and tight frames. His perspective of action is well done, so keep an open mind. If this were not the big 3 I would tell you to hold off on picking this issue up. It will no doubt fly off the racks of your local shop, so if you value ink and variant covers over pixels, head on over there now. If you get your books via digital download, no need to rush it.

Star Wars #8

I would urge all of you to get those back issues you have been meaning to read dusted off and in your finished pile. Journey to The Force Awakens kicks off in a couple weeks with Shattered Empire and the Aftermath novels. No more wondering if that blaster on page 4 will have ripple effects and be the same one Captain Phasma uses. JTTFA will have consequences that are real in December as the lights go down and the curtain goes up.

Star Wars is for everyone. There is nothing BS about feminism or race that Disney has included in these new stories. Nothing calculated about where LFL is taking Star Wars either, in my opinion.

Welcome to the 21st century where people of every sex, color, and orientation deserve and will hopefully get characters they identify with in the Star Wars universe.

So this is how they’ll explain Finn Solo. Han’s forgotten son from his ex-wife.

If Finn is Han’s son where did he get his Force sense from? Han is definitely not Force Sensitive.

Kennedy sure has a great idea, make star wars that is inclusive of 51% of the American population. Who would have thought….

Personally I’m getting sick of seeing cosplays of slave leia or female-versions of male characters as the only options for women at conventions.

Im glad to see divesity in this, however i dont like this political correctness crap being force fed into our guts. Praise to ya for giving more females and blacks their roles, but make it where its natural and makes sense for the characters. Not over blown crap like this…

Exactly. But people are going to call you a racist and “filled with with hate” because you said that. It’s a bit silly why would anyone hate anyone else? It’s a waste of time. People get offended too easily they pretty much erased all the comments on this page.

I just don’t like when they shoe horn stuff like this to push some PC garbage, or to get a rise out of other people. They did it for the controversy. But I personally like Han being young and single. I bet people would not have been upset if he was married to some alien chick who’s tribe forced them to marry after spending the night with her.

Exactly what is unnatural? Even in the EU Han had a girlfriend who was a person of color. What on earth are you going on about?

All i got to say iz….. If Star Wars 7 is too much PC like it was with Fantastic Four, movie fans will make the statement, and Diseny will lose big. We shall see..

Question for all of you who are having issues with interracial romances in Star Wars:

Do any of you actually think that Lando really cared about the skin color of the women he seduced?

I sincerely apologize on behalf of this site and its staff. I assure you this kind of stuff is not tolerated. I’m currently working to find a moderator who has access to the comments section. This will be dealt with as soon as that happens.

Again, my apologies. Please don’t think this kind of crap is indicative of the site

We do what we can to keep these comment sections free from bigotry, but comments sections being so numerous, it’s very hard to keep track of everything. If you see a bigoted post, flag the comment as to warn us as soon as possible. We do not tolerate that garbage here.

If you wish to find a better place to discuss Star Wars news, look no further than The Cantina. It is more easily-moderated and free from bigotry. Plus, discussions there are substantially better than discussions in these comments sections.

Yeah I’m all for diversity wherever appropriate and applicable but a lot of this shit is simply coming off as shoehorned. Seeking to expand a fan base and profits should’t come at the expense of questionable story-telling.

BTW: “Straight Outta Compton” is a very GOOD movie for what it is. There isn’t any bigot shit with me.

Edit: I also have a feeling that Boyega is gonna totally ace his role but of course it has to be seen.

I’ve tried to subtly delete offensive and utterly disgusting comments where I can, but it’s blatantly clear that nobody cares for subtlety these days. So I am putting my foot down right here and right now.

Any sad clown making bigoted complaints in the comments sections about how oppressed they are as a white person by non-white men and women being added to a setting are going to be shown the door. This isn’t goddamned Stormfront. We don’t serve your kind.

Thanks Kyle and Pomojema. I appreciate the reassurance. I know it’s probably a lot of work keeping track of everything on this site. I also appreciate your news updates, stories, and opinions. You two in particular always have really interesting things to say about the GFFA. I do thoroughly enjoy this site. It’s just a shame when immature people ruin it for everyone else with bigotry. I just want to read about Star Wars related news, spoilers, and speculation and let my imagination go crazy. For the most part this site does that for me so Thank you!

Since I am getting more than a little fed up with the butthurt over “political correctness” and racists covering up their racism by saying “I don’t mind diversity, except when it’s shoehorned in, and of course I’m the one who decides it’s always being shoehorned in,” out of curiosity, I did a count. I used IMDB, Wookieepedia, and my own memory to determine that there are roughly 108 speaking roles in the previous six “Star Wars” movies, liberally defined as “anyone who says anything in a real-world language.” Of those roles, 91 (84%) are filled by men, who make up about half the world’s population in the real world. 94 (87%) are filled by Caucasians, who make up 16% of the total racial makeup of the world.

In other words, you would need at least two or three “Star Wars” movies WITHOUT A SINGLE WHITE MALE in the cast before you would even come CLOSE to being accurately representative of the world’s population, let alone, dominating or “marginalizing” white men.

So one has to wonder exactly what these commenters are afraid of losing by having a few women and non-white people in lead roles?

You do know that the empire had white British men be the ones in power and they didn’t have aliens or people of color in there upper ranks until Thrawn was introduced in the books.

The whole giving the Han a wife idea was to sell comic books and give people something to talk about, I say it worked. I just think some people made it uglier than it should of been but other sensitive people got there panties in a bunch even more so. Why is it so wrong for other people to have a opinion? Let’s try to discuss stuff without name calling and blaming.

I guess in the next issue we find out that they used to be married, or something. The problem everyone has with this character is not that she’s black or what, but that according to ESB between ANH and ESB Han and Leia got kinda in touch with each other and han fell in love with her. (Leia the same, just she didnt admit.) Having Han MARRIED during this period of time sounds really making that difficult to happen.
