UPDATE! Fake BB-8 Sphero Toy Shown at ToyCon 2015.

bb-8Move over, R2-D2, there’s a new droid in town. BB-8, the breakout prop of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, is getting a remote-controlled toy in the near future, and images of it have been leaked from two sources..

Sphero is the technology behind the BB-8 droid used in The Force Awakens. Back in April the robotics company announced they are building an official toy based on the character. Until now we’ve only seen a teaser image posted on their site:

Sphero

Now first images with the toy leaked from this year’s ToyCon held in the Philippines. Check them out:

We removed the images to avoid any confusions.

The toy is apparently slated to sell for about $150 USD, and should hit around “Force Friday” in September (or some other time before the movie releases this December).

If you’re not familiar with Sphero, you should definitely check out the video below:

Thanks to Cantina member Altgr0160 for the heads up.

UPDATE!

We received word from Sphero commenting on the BB-8 unit that was shown at the ToyCon:

“Please note that the BB-8 spotted at ToyCon 2015 is not legitimate; it was not provided by Sphero. This is unfortunate and does not accurately represent anything our team is working on.”

Obviously the company in the Philippines is illegally using Sphero’s logo to promote an item that is not their property. We will keep you updated on this story.

    Cool?

I have a problem with the head…either it’s too big, or they made the body too small. Just comparing with the “real deal” shown at SWCA. Overall, could have been a little more detailed, but I guess this works for $150.

I think… that’s just a model of it, there’s no way that only costs 150.. it has to be smaller…..

It’s not THAT accurate to the movie version. No lights, the eye is far too big and the sphere itself is too small in comparison to the head.

That being said, it’s still cool that this technology is available.

MUST GET. BB-8 really seems like a great addition to the SW canon.

You nerds will cry about anything. Hopefully aliens from a galaxy far far away come here and wipe humans out. Clean slate is needed to save Earth. Bunch of destructive oversized cockroaches. I’m sure people will complain that it should have been CGI when the movie comes out. Waaaaaaaaaaaaah. Waaaaaaaaaaah. Probably about 5,000 people will die from starvation today, but who cares, BB8 toy has too big an eye piece. Waaaaaaaaaaah.

To be fair I did say it was “still cool”. 150 bucks cool though? kinda. You could buy a lot of cool stuff for 150 bucks.

It’s like whoever was making the model either didn’t look at the real thing or a photo very closely. Or else the manufacturing gear could only handle that proportion possibly. for 20 bucks or whatever the black series figures go for you at least get proper sense of scale.

You guys are complaining about aesthetics when you should be gawking at the fact that we will be able to remote control via an app on our smart phones 2 magnetically-tethered balls. Technology is amazing.

Regardless, I will not be buying one for $150.

Shit , stop bitching. At least they are giving us BB-8. if you want detail customize it yourself. Disney wanted them to have less detail so they can prevent people trying to scam saying it’s the real one from set.

Wrong, it has less detail because it is a TOY.

Regarding the update: that is a trend at trade shows. Be it fashion, technology or entertainment, somehow these ripoff artists always manage to make a buck by cashing in on other people hardwork.

After all the hype, I was really expecting something special. It was fine, more competent than I would have imagined something like this. But still just a fun kids movie and nothing special. Doesn’t hold up to some of the Pixar classics, etc.

I’m not really sure we can reach any conclusions if a Star Wars film had the same director. Directors are obviously aware that there are different styles and aesthetics for movies (aside from Tim Burton). It’s not as though they will make it a song and dance movie with Disney somehow not noticing.
