LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Officially Announced

LEGO Star Wars
Today at Microsoft’s E3 2019 presentation, the next installment of the LEGO Star Wars series was officially announced, verifying older rumors about the project. The new game will explore the story of all nine episodic Star Wars movies.

The last LEGO Star Wars title focused on The Force Awakens, with no follow-up made for The Last Jedi. And now we know why: TT Games instead opted to make a comprehensive title covering the prequel, original, and sequel trilogies in one big video game. It’s not known if Rogue One or Solo content will be featured, but we do know that you’ll be able to play through levels based on The Phantom MenaceAttack of the ClonesRevenge of the SithA New HopeThe Empire Strikes BackReturn of the JediThe Force AwakensThe Last Jedi, and finally, The Rise of Skywalker.

While The Skywalker Saga was officially announced today, the footage shown was purely cinematic with no gameplay just yet. Some key scenes were revisited, such as the Millennium Falcon‘s escape from the Death Star from A New Hope, Darth Maul’s duel against Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn from The Phantom Menace, Darth Vader slicing off Luke Skywalker’s hand in The Empire Strikes Back, and Rey standing against Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens. You can watch the announcement trailer below:

The earlier rumors about the project stated that the new LEGO title will be “the most important game TT has released, ever”. It’s currently unclear if levels from previous games will be completely remade or if they are just being remastered, but it’s likely that the prequel and original trilogies will receive new content regardless of what TT Games does. Furthermore, the game’s cast of playable characters is said to be in the hundreds, and some sort of procedurally-generated content will factor into the game. Finally, it’s believed that the game will feature Expanded Universe content, although it’s not clear if this refers to content from the Legends setting or content from is part of Disney’s non-Skywalker Saga expansions into the universe. In any case, it’s sounding like the next LEGO Star Wars title will be the definitive one of the series, so hopefully it won’t take long before we learn more about the game.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will be released in 2020.
