Interactive entertainment company Kabam has just issued a press release about their upcoming mobile game, Star Wars: Uprising. We had briefly posted an article about this a few days ago, but removed it at Kabam’s request. Now, we’re proud to be able to present the following official announcement:

San Francisco – June 4, 2015 – Kabam, in collaboration with The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) and Lucasfilm Ltd., today announced the development of Star WarsTM: Uprising, the first mobile game to take place after Star Wars™: Episode VI Return of the JediTM and before Star Wars™: The Force AwakensTM. Developed by the industry-leading team at Kabam RPG Studio in San Francisco under the direction of Senior Vice President Aaron Loeb, Star WarsTM: Uprising will allow players to create their own unique character, go on missions, and build their gear and skills, while amassing a powerful crew and cartel to join in large-scale sector-wide battles that dictate the future of the game universe. Players will also be able to engage in real-time co-op with friends against the Empire.

Star WarsTM: Uprising will introduce a new chapter of the Star Wars™ universe that will illuminate dramatic events in the Anoat Sector, inclusive of Hoth and Cloud City, following the Battle of Endor and the death of the Emperor. Players will learn hundreds of abilities and collect iconic Star Wars gear to create their own takes on the next generation of heroes: Smuggler, Bounty Hunter, Rebel Guerilla, Diplomat, Gambler or something completely unique.

“Star WarsTM: Uprising is a deep role playing game (RPG) experience that will immerse players in the Star Wars universe during a unique time following the fall of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine,” said Loeb. “The Kabam RPG Studio has taken its collective experience and passion for role playing games to focus on creating a unique and immersive gameplay experience for Star Wars fans and RPG gamers around the world.”

The Star WarsTM: Uprising official website is now live at http://playstarwarsuprising.com, where the game’s first trailer is now posted. By pre-registering, Star Wars fans can help shape the future of the in-game universe and win exclusive prizes such as a storm trooper helmet by voting for in-game content. Star Wars: Uprising will begin a beta roll out in select territories in the upcoming weeks…

We will have more information on this dynamic new RPG as it becomes available.

So there was a massive power vacuum after Palpatine’s death – this gives a greater indication of how the political makeup of TFA is going to be.

6 months!!! And we all thought it was over in 2005!!!!

But we already saw Cloud City celebrating at the end of ROTJ…

“A completely man-made, massive, floating, gas mining colony of a few million workers, tourists and support staff hovering over the gas planet of Bespin. The Imperial Garrison was abandoned shortly after news of the Emperor’s death.”

        What does that mean exactly?

        • June 4, 2015 at 10:48 pm
          Permalink

Basically that the Imperials left Cloud City for other things unknown. We don’t know how long the galactic celebrations portrayed in ROTJ took place after the DS2 destruction. Could be days or even weeks. By that time there would have been a limited Imperial presence on Bespin if any at all.

Is it just me, or does the entire premise of TFA contradict the montage at the end of ROTJ? I sometimes wonder if Disney’s sequels are sequels to the original versions of the OT.

I’m thinking they want to hit the masses with this one. More people will have a mobile device than a console or even a pc. They can blanket a bigger audience with a mobile game. I just hope it’s good.

I read Star Wars novels and comics on my way to/from work, so a mobile game is right up my alley! Anything to keep me occupied on the bus, hehe. I’m excited to see how this fills us in on the political atmosphere of TFA, and the galaxy post-ROTJ. Plus, we’ll have like 300 console games by the time 2020 rolls around, so I don’t mind getting more mobile gamers in to Star Wars. I just hope it runs better than KOTOR on mobile… that was a nightmare.

the Vader looking thing is called a “Purge Trooper”

Commander Bragh: The leader of the much-feared Purge Troopers. Bragh believes that those who rebel against the Empire are less than human and uses his position to indulge his love of causing pain.

    • June 4, 2015 at 9:23 pm

Thematically, yes. [spoiler caution] That is the direction they’re going in with the new canon. If you recall in The Dark Knight, there were ‘posers’, pretending to be the “Batman”, promulgating vain glory in the name of justice. This is precisely what happens following the death of the Empr. Although by TFA, the poser’s bluff is called…..by a mastermind.

I like the looks of that one guy. Even though it’s just a mish mash of Flash Gordon/clone trooper helmet fin, Bosk, Boush, Boba Fett and what not, it’s still a cool looking combination and color scheme.

I wonder if that is part of the character generation system. Maybe you can pick from lots of different parts that are stolen (borrowed? inspired?) from lots of existing characters in order to come up with your own look.

I’m sure a lot of this is going to touched in the novel Aftermath, not going to pick up the mobile game but I’ll watch any youtube video of cinematics like this trailer.

It appears that what is left of the Empire is trying to cut off certain sectors from the rest of the galaxy, making them think the Emperor is alive (so that Grand Moffs and other high-ranking Imperial officers can control these sectors).

The Nobles as a secret society sounds interesting. Could this be where Snoke originates from? The secret society like the Emperor’s Hands in Tie Fighter PC could work. The game had an incredible amount of intrigue even as a space sim.
