Josh Trank, Adam Driver and Domhnall Gleeson Talk Star Wars

josh-trankCheck out these several interesting articles from the last few days, where Josh Trank reveals why he left the second Star Wars Anthology movie, Adam Driver’s opinion on The Force Awakens story and why Domhnall Gleeson panicked just before he signed up for TFA…

In an interview for the summer issue of Hero Complex magazine, Josh Trank spoke publicly about his departure from the second Star Wars Anthology movie for the first time.

As you remember shortly after LFL announced Trank’s departure from the project, rumors started to spread like wild fire that were deeper, darker reasons behind this. There were rumors that Trank had been fired “due to his erratic behavior on the set of Fantastic Four”, and that there was some tension between him FF producer and co-writer Simon Kinberg, who is also producing the Anthology movie. Here is what Trank had to say about it:

None of those facts were true – and any of the facts that were true were spun in such a maliciously wrong way. I knew that this was going to be questioned and it was going to come under skepticism as to why I left ‘Star Wars. And it was hard. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my life.

If you ask anybody by name who I’ve worked with, from Simon to [producer] Hutch [Parker] or my crew or anybody else, they’d be like, ‘We’ve been working really hard on this movie and we’ve had an excellent time working together. It’s been a challenging movie – for all of the right reasons.

I have a great relationship with everyone at Lucasfilm and with Kari Hart. And they all understood it because this whole experience for me has been very psychologically hard.

simon-kinberg

Simon Kinberg himself backed up his friend saying:

I’ve been around some version of this for a long time. This, I would say, is particularly cruel. I haven’t really seen this level of vehemence against a filmmaker. And it’s surreal and unfair.

Driver

While discussing his latest movie “Hungry Heart” with IndieWire, Adam Driver briefly talked about Star Wars, but it was a memorable mention.

Q: From “Star Wars” versus “Hungry Hearts.”

A: Driver: Right, right. Well, “Star Wars” started as an indie film with a lot of money. With JJ Abrams, it wasn’t effects and how are we were going to sell it. It was story and character from the beginning.

Gleeson

In the next interview Domhnall Gleeson is being interviewed by Angelina Jolie herself for Interview magazine (they both worked together on Unbroken, directed by Anjelina Jolie). They were discussing Gleeson’s career and of course also talked about Star Wars.

From Interview:

ANGELINA JOLIE: So I know I can’t ask about Star Wars, but I’m going to. Because, as an actor, and as that little boy who I saw in that video with your brother … I imagine that boy getting the phone call that he’s going to be in Star Wars. How did you react to that?

DOMHNALL GLEESON: I panicked. I met with J.J. [Abrams] and said, “I’m not okay with signing up for something when I haven’t read the script. I just feel weird about it.” And so they let me read the script, which is really important to me. But then I had to make a decision that night whether I was going to be at the table-read the next day, which meant signing the deal. So that night I did have kind of a panic attack. I really get on well with my agents. And I called them up and I was like, “What have I done? I like my privacy ..

Jolie & Gleeson

JOLIE: So, can I ask if you enjoyed working on the film that cannot be mentioned?

GLEESON: On Star Wars? I did. I enjoyed it for the reasons that you enjoy any film, that people were together, and that it was actually challenging. I like a challenge. I was more of an Indiana Jones kid than a Star Wars kid.

JOLIE: I’m personally a Boba Fett fan. [Gleeson laughs]

GLEESON: Well, you make a phone call and I’m pretty sure, Angie, that they’ll have you in, in a second.

JOLIE: Can Boba Fett have a missus? Well, put in a good word for me, then.

GLEESON: Could you imagine? “Hey, I’m calling to put in a good word for Angie.” [Jolie laughs] There is a wonder when you see make-believe stuff. And the crew, because they were all Star Wars fans, they’d painted stuff in the forest, little personal touches in there.
JOLIE: How long did you work on it?

GLEESON: It was stoppy-starty. And then schedules changed because Harrison got hurt. But it wasn’t nearly as long as I had thought, because the most recent one I did ended up being about seven months.

Tell us what you think on Josh Trank’s departure, and would you like to see Angelina Jolie doing a cameo in one of the Anthology movies, in the comments below.

It’s really amazing to hear Angelina Jolie being a SW fan. It just goes to show how popular the OT was among any person who grew up in the 80’s.

The fact that ‘even now’ Adam Driver and Domhnall Gleeson aren’t allowed to talk about about their characters or reveal any information about TFA is very interesting!

Seems like all the old spoilers I read were the real ones after all.

Oh well,, hopefully I will forget them before the movie comes out, but I doubt it.

        Why is this even necessary?

Just wish I hadn’t read all the spoilers
in a section that wasn’t spoiler stuff.

          No insults intended.At all .

I don’t care about Trank anymore… nor what he has to say. That’s not me saying anything about you reporting on it… that’s fine. I’m just saying personally he’s of zero interest now. Why? Because he’s out! For whatever reasons.

As for Gleeson… I loved him with Oscar in Ex-machina… I wasn’t all that excited as everyone else as to who he might be but dang it if their enthusiasm isn’t infectious. Got me curious now who he may be.

Jolee being a Fett fan excited me in ways it shouldn’t have and I’ll leave it at that.

Nope, he sucks and that’s why he got thrown out.
Think about it, this guy wants to do more personal and fresh ideas, doing a great Star Wars movie would lead to future bargaining if he wants to do a more personal film idea.

I thought it was interesting that Gleeson said they let him read the script. More than likely he just got to look at some portions of it or that which was relevant to his character, but the way he puts it “the script” seems to convey that he read the whole thing. I doubt this is the case, especially since he hadn’t signed on yet, but it makes me think that his character is very important to the film and JJ really wanted him in particular for the role.
