J.J. Abrams on The Force Awakens Spoilers

jj-abramsDuring an interview about the small indie drama Infinitely Polar Bear, which J.J. Abrams is producing, the director briefly talked about the rumors and spoilers surrounding The Force Awakens.

From news.com.au:

On how the cast of The Force Awakens gelled:

“Ahh yes,” says Abrams, suddenly remembering the existence of Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens. “If I hung up right now, would you be offended?”

There’s a pregnant pause before he adds: “Just kidding.”

“Ahh, well, I need you to see it and let me know what you think,” he replies. “We’re still cutting it, but I could not be more excited.”

“The level of scrutiny is pretty much unprecedented for me,” he admits. “My dream is that, despite so many rumours — many of which are true, many of which are untrue — when people see the movie, they see something that hasn’t been completely ruined for them by having read spoilers they might not have wanted to read.”

Abrams should just shut up. People want to see the movie now. If he and disney would treat Star Wars fans with the same level of respect as marvel fans we would all be a lot happier.

The level of arrogance this post showed is rather sad. I have seen no difference in treatment between Star Wars and Marvel, since, you know, the movie hasn’t even come out yet. Let them take their time and make a great star wars movie.

Yeah, better they finish the movie before it comes out.

Yeah I don’t get it myself. I find the treatment of this movie to be perfectly fine! How can anyone be mad? It’s all happening so fast! I’m still in shock we are even getting a new movie let alone it’s in 9 months.

Plus we’ve got celebration and Battlefront news coming. Some people get upset about the weirdest things… I can’t possibly be mad at Star Wars until after release… and hopefully I wont be then either!

It is probably that stupid EU stuff. They can’t let it go. It was absolutely the right decision.

If poster is just referring to the movie, it has been done exquisitely. They have worked hard to keep as much under wraps as possible (I avoid spoilers if I can, but if a bit gets through, fine). But JJ loves Star Wars, it is why his Star Treks, while very entertaining, do not to me really follow the mythos.

But the first trailer was 100% was I was hoping for. Everything looks real and lived in, the costumes, props and sounds were perfect and we finally get to see the Falcon in its real glory. Let’s see the “she still has a few moves” we deserve.

Two things dragged the PT down a bit for me (no I did not hate them, sorry) was the video game look they did on purpose with the weird lighting and CGI, and two, the abandonment of making characters you could like other than Qui Gon. JJ did realize the lack of real props is too much for an actor to really over come. (again, not for Qui Gon). It seems like the characters are ALREADY deeper in TFA, Boyega portrayed more emotion than Annikan did in both of his films. Not sure if Christiansen was a bad actor or not, as Portman is very talented and she seemed completely wooden too. Lucas should have said “faster and more intense!” like he did throughout the OT, sadly he got a little too excited about the sandbox and forgot to have the toys support the movie, rather than be the movie.

That said, Lucas is still the most brilliant business man and creative story teller ever, and he should always be referred to as such.

It is total arrogance to blithely chuck years worth of solid writing just because you can’t lay sole claim to it and it’s monetary value.

They had a ready made trilogy in the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. It is solid and would make 3 great movies. But no, lets forget this even exists because we don’t want to pay people for their talent and creativity. That is disgraceful.

Still, I will watch Episode 7 and weigh it on it’s own merits. I am just happy that a new film is being made and that Luke, Leia and Han weren’t blown out the airlock.

Abrams’ mystery box bullshit is nothing but disrespect to fans who don’t appreciate the great lengths he takes on security versus the quality of his films.

Did you see his last one? It was so stupid and predictable we didn’t really need spies on set to tell us about it, most of Into Darkness was figured out by guess work before it even started filming.

I sense no disrespect from Abrams, Disney, or any of those involved with the SWVII Project. You’re a freakin idiot…!

… And you even say that without giving us a name. Go and film a damn shortfilm, whatever you want. Then come back and show us the result.

Actually, I can see the point of the poster who complained about SW being disrespectfully – or rather, JJA not showing any signs of treating the movie as good as Disney has treated Marvel, as of yet.

The movie surely has a lot going for it – the brand, the quality cast, the OT cast returning, the overall production value, the continuity reboot, the buzz.

But apart from the style, what do we know about the substance? Everything we have confirmed about the movie so far is, quite frankly… Just okay.

The more ambiguous political situation between rebels and empire than in the old EU, okay.
          The female Jedi lead, okay.
Han in a big role, Luke in a small one, okay.
The Vader-Maul hybrid villain with the mask AND the fancy sword, okay.

But I personally am still waiting for something about the movies that is more than either stylish or circumstantial. I realize that it will probably not be before December until we all get that, but I dread that JJA precisely doesn’t have it in store. The Star Trek reboot had all the right FEEL, but none of the substance. If SW goes the same route – and things are surely looking in that way so far – it will kill the brand for me.

            ITS 9 MONTHS AWAY.

There are kids being conceived right now to parents that can have the kids born and be sleeping 3 hours a night before this movie comes out.

It is pure disrespect to filmmakers that fans have to ‘green light’ a plot point before it gets to the final edit, especially without knowing how the plot point is sold visually, artistically and within the context of a character(s) arc.

How come Jason Ward at MSW knows so much? – it`s like he has a copy of the script…I almost half regret reading such detailed spoilers on his site (still can`t resist them though).

While I do love this site, I find myself going to Jason Ward’s site more often because there are more interesting stories; I would much rather read about an intriguing rumor that may not be true than read a story about JJ Abrams dissing us by saying “shut up and wait.”

And I’m still waiting for the speculative article concerning Felicity Jones’ role in Rogue 1.

I don’t believe his spoilers. He claims to have a script, but then he hasn’t hardly shared anything and keeps talking about how he doesn’t know stuff. And yet he claims he knows that Luke is only in one scene, briefly, at the end of the movie (which doesn’t make any sense). Yeah right. I don’t buy it.

    Dear Disney,

By releasing a mere 90 second teaser, fans have tattoo’ed BB-8 patterns on their arms, made fan replica action figures of cross-blade sith sabers, and have produced thousands of Rey and Finn fan art.

Just imagine what the response would have been by now if you didn’t insist on secrecy.

    Sincerely,
one of many frustrated Star Wars fans.

As Mark Hamil said… they aren’t trying to be jerks… they are trying to put together a very elaborate surprise party.

At first I was fine with spoilers… but now I’m trying to stay away from them… and hoping some of the more crucial ones didn’t completely spoil the film for me.

9 months is nothing. It will be upon us before we know it. Chill out, enjoy the spring and summer, and then the pre-VII hype will be in full swing come this fall. I’m on SW7N everyday hoping for a morsel of new info, but I only stay for a few minutes before I’m back to reality and enjoying many other things life has to offer.

Many (but not all 🙂 people who read spoilers, are the same ones that whine on the various message boards once the movie comes out. They complain the movie wasn’t “surprising,” etc. and they were “bored.” Here’s a clue, DON’T READ THE FRIGGIN’ SPOILERS. It’s called impulse control people. You’ll thank yourself, once you’re sitting in the theater come December.

All I know is that if anyone spoils the ending of a new SW film for me, I will personally aid Viral Hide in banning everyone! And then I will shoot a bunny! in the face!

Don’t get me wrong, I like hearing snippets and teases, but I’d rather hear it from JJ’s mouth in timing chosen by a large group of people who are literally paid to judge when we are or are not ready to hear it.

I’m with JJs – and Mark – on this one, if anyone digs up anything that will ruin the film for me and other losers who like to be surprised, by all means, keep it between you and others who wish to know EVERYTHING beforehand… leave me out of it…

I would be happy if JJ would just say Luke is in the movie for more than 10 seconds and is not in exile. The whole Star Wars series sets Luke up to have incredible potential with the force and be an incredible character. A short basic synopsis wouldn’t ruin anything, and would set a lot if people at ease.

I am shocked JJ failed to prevent TFA concept art appear on line. These are the most valuable asset for SW, traditionally. This kind of security breach did not happen previously . Reading between the linew of what JJ said, he almost conceded to lose his most treasured magic box .

From a business standpoint, this is a good thing for Disney – simply, because the degree of customer awareness is so high.

Now, the thing is, with that grows the potential for high customer frustration, as well.

As I wrote in the long post above – Disney has virtually no other way than messing this up, UNLESS, that is, the movie is mediocre. Or just “good”. . And that’s the deal: Disney would do good in presenting not just an incentive (“It’s Star wars”), but a reason (“this is going to happen, and it shall be magnificient”) for the movie, unless they want to risk losing customer attention until the release date.

Isn’t the assumption in all this plot spoilers, that there will be a “meaningful plot”? But that in itself is not a given, is it. It could just be like in LOST where they made things up by gluing to gether a sequence of “cliffhangers”.
