SW7N Review: Marvel’s Star Wars: Darth Vader #2.

Tie

The second issue of Marvel’s ongoing Darth Vader comic book series is out. Check out our review after the jump.

Excerpt from the review:

Well, the only thing that can disappoint about an ongoing series in any medium of storytelling is the lillypad aspect some parts of a larger story must have. Darth Vader #2 is a good example of this. If you pick up this issue do not expect that you will be moved much further ahead in the arc than where you began. It’s not a bad issue, mind you, just a lillypad, and it is well worth the cover price to stay current in the new stratosphere of Star Wars stories.

Darth Vader #2

Let’s start with the good. The art, by Salvador Larroca, is as beautiful as anything out there. Considering none of the scenes take place on any planet, Larroca shines as he makes the most of the mostly claustrophobic story.

I thought the art was a let down and shoddy to be honest, after the first issue shone so brightly with an almost photo realistic art, this issue lacks this and the lazy artwork ruined the story and second issue for me. Bring back the artists from issue 1 please!

There is an entire generation of comic “artists” that trace art off of screen-grabs or reference photos. Would rather original renderings any day over that.

While I think the story in the first issue is better, I like the more original art in this issue. Issue 1 was nearly completely created by retracing stills from ROTJ, which looks awesome at first due to the detail, but when you finally begin to notice that every frame of Palpatine and Jabba and Bib Fortuna is reused it begins to get disturbing…

I preferred the artwork in the 1st issue, regardless of the tracing stills. The artwork in issue 2 reminds me of the lazy and haphazard artwork of the Star Wars comics of the 70s and 80s. it was sub-standard and boorish in issue 2. Bring back the original artists otherwise you will find some of us not buying anymore. Give us what we want and not this crap.

What do you expect? I agree regarding the sudden change in artwork, the first issue art was amazing – the second issue art is mediocre in comparison.

Tracing stills or not, the artwork is the least of our worries. After two issues, I feel like Marvel is going too far out the way to establish Vader as a “blunt and dumb” instrument. Maybe during the first five years post-Mustafar, but 19 years later? Having Vader ask stupid questions after two decades of apprenticeship to the most diabolical mind in the GFFA just looks lazy & stupid.

And why does EVERYONE have to take a field trip to Jabba’s palace? I mean, who HASN’T been there? Best part was: “Jedi make suggestions, but Sith exert their will.”
