An Abundance of Rumors on Star Wars Battlefront!

Field-FrontMaking Star Wars received an array of rumors about the highly-anticipated Star Wars Battlefront. Make the jump to figure out which eras will be represented, and how the Electronic Arts/DICE game ties into The Force Awakens.

Let’s start off with something that a lot of players will be interested in: the maps. The following planets are said to be battlegrounds (not a comprehensive list):

  • Hoth
  • Endor
  • Alderaan
  • Coruscant
  • Yavin IV
  • Tatooine

Hoth Caves

In an interesting note, certain planets are said to have certain battlegrounds based on specific movies. Tatooine, for instance, seems to have maps based on The Phantom Menace, A New Hope, and The Force Awakens (which suggests that the desert planet in the trailer is in fact Tatooine). But Tatooine, Alderaan, and Coruscant’s presence in this list of playable levels means one thing – this game isn’t just focused on the Original Trilogy. Which brings me to the next point: content from the Prequel Trilogy, the Original Trilogy, and the Sequel Trilogy is going to be seen within the game. Players will be able to utilize soldiers from five factions: the Old Republic (from the Prequel Trilogy, not the BioWare games), the Separatists, the Empire, the Rebel Alliance, and the New Republic. Ward mentioned that “all of the battles and settings that you would expect to be there will be playable”, which might mean that Naboo, Geonosis, Utapau, Kashyyyk, and Mustafar could be potential battlegrounds.

Concept art

The game’s campaign (which is said to be pretty long for a game in shooter genre) will take you through the entire history of Star Wars – and that’s including the events in the animated series The Clone Wars, which is described as the starting point for the campaign. A majority of the campaign is still set during the time of the Galactic Civil War, with content from the Prequel Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy serving as smaller parts of the game. A key note about the campaign is that it is said to bridge a bit of the gap between Return Of The Jedi and The Force Awakens, though there will be a significant amount of empty space in the timeline to accommodate for future works. DICE apparently was allowed into Pinewood Studios to scan certain props from The Force Awakens in order to recreate them in-game. Interestingly, during this period in the narrative, Ward’s source mentions that a character with the surname of Tarkin is introduced. The campaign ends at the very beginning of The Force Awakens, where you will play as characters that are in the movie.

Attack Squadrons

Speaking of characters from the movies, the hero system from Battlefront II is back – players get to play as various heroes and villains from throughout the Star Wars timeline, complete with unique abilities. Heroes are summoned in exchange for points that players get for accomplishing various tasks, which gives potentially every player a shot at playing as a unique soldier. Many of the heroes from The Force Awakens are playable from launch. The game is also introducing a number of new features, including support for battles that can include a total of 64 players. A wide variety of new vehicles will be introduced in the game, which ties into the introduction of a new gameplay gimmick: space-to-land battles, which allow players to go between a space battle and a concurrent planetary battle seamlessly. This was a feature that was going to be implemented into Free Radical’s Battlefront III project that was cancelled when the company went under. Space-to-land battles are only available for certain modes.

Battlefront Elite Squadron

Of course, it wouldn’t be an EA game without the promise of downloadable content. The current plan seems to adopt DICE’s Battlefront model for DLC – 5 packs, one of which will come shortly after the game is released. Each pack follows a specific theme, and the first two are said to exclusively contain content for The Force Awakens. Heroes that aren’t available in the initial game will be included in these packs, along with new vehicles and 3 or more maps per pack. It’s sounding a lot like EA is in this for the long haul.

Space Battle

The game has been targeted for a Holiday 2015 release in time for The Force Awakens, but the source notes that the game will come out about a month in advance – most likely in time for Black Friday. The game will also be the first new Star Wars title that Electronic Arts releases as a part of their partnership with Disney and Lucasfilm (not counting expansions to BioWare’s The Old Republic). It will be released on the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 platforms.

am I the only one that feels like… MakingStarWars just sometimes makes crap up?

A lot of tiems the website seems accurate, other times it feels like its being fan ficy.

Well the thing is that MakingStarWars generally seems to be a trusted website, but then people rip on that 4chan leaker called spoilerman.

When honesltly they seem to be largely identical in teh kinds of stuff they say. There was even a relatively recent “makingstarwars” thing that seemed to confirm a whole bunch of stuff from the spoilerman leaks.

I just dont see any reason to give the makingstarwars leaks any more credibility than leaks from other leakers without corroborating evidence.

Generally I feel for a leak to be confirmed there should be around 2-3 leakers saying the same thing.

I noticed he said he gets stuff from trusted sources but feels the need to print rumors from untested sources. There should be some refinement and restraint. But if you are in he rumor business any printed article no matter how sensational means hits. Remember the Luke is a cyborg fiasco? He came with that one on his own by misinterpreting the concept art.

I have a feeling Spoilerman contacted him with a new identity. Spoilerperson even troed to make new accounts on this forum’s website!

So you believe this fan site, but not another one? I think MSW is one of the best Star Wars rumors site.

To be honest, MSW.net is actually providing Star Wars information, unlike this one. This site usually just writes about what other sites are reporting and gives a forum to discuss it (which is still very cool and appreciated). But if you’ve been following MSW.net for the past year or so, then you’ll realize Jason Ward (owner and reporter of the site) has never flat out fabricated a rumor. He just has so many (trusted) people giving him interesting information, he shares some with us even if he isn’t 100% sure about the accuracy. But come on, this dude has been calling just about everything correctly so far. Lets not forget the 100% accurate concept art descriptions that came out months and months before the actual art leaked. 1 miss out of 5 doesn’t warrant the loss of credibility. Can’t wait for TFA!

I’ll wait for final word from DICE and EA themselves. A movie rumor is one thing. A game rumor is something else altogether. Granted, it’s a Star Wars game with a campaign that last time I checked will be canon.

No. The main Clone Wars comics are not canon. The only comic dealing with the Clone Wars that is canon is Darth Maul Son of Dathomir. Sorry. That confused me too when I first learned that.

Space-to-Air combat is a must after we’ve learned (from leaked videos) that free radicals pulled it off with their BF3 try. Also, that’s another element that will make Battlefront less of a copy to Battlefield.

By the way, their source cleared a few things in case you guys missed:
“The source contacted me to let me know they simply meant the prequel era Republic when they said “Old Republic.” They did not mean the story from 3000 years before A New Hope. They also said online matches are 64 players, 32 on each side”

Thanks for the clarity about the multiplayer match sizes. I knew that the “Old Republic” faction referred to the one with all the clones, but this should make it even more clear than before.

Is it really gonna be like BFI and II if it comes to maps?…

I was expecting to get more original new map content.
They should create new maps based on other planets that hasn’t been released before.
Otherwise its like CoD that you can play that old map with a newer skin…

Flying in vaders tie fighter and millennium falcon would be awesome. Do we get to blow up the Death Star twice lol I wonder if Star Wars rebels will have parts in it

Not to be a Debbie Downer but I don’t believe a word of it. I’m sure some of these features may return or happen but no source actually heard this. This sounds like educated/hopeful guess work.

The space to ground battles is the biggest part of it I find to be false. That’s a big undertaking for DICE and the actual value of such an addition is debatable.

The great part about this is if I’m wrong… is it still sounds like a great game. I want to know about Bots more than anything else though.

in the article, the poster enlights the fact space battle will only be available for certain modes. Yes it can be false but the thing is Free Radical came with 99% finished work (including space-to-ground battles)on SWBIII. IMO it’s not a stretch to think a kind of this feature could be available. If free radical have done it, i think Dice can too. They even maybe use the work of FR ? Really guessing now

Yup, by Dice. The guys who made BF:BC2, BF3 which were really GREAT games.

Ofc, there is the bad side of DLCs which I really hate but I know i’ll probably buy them..mostly beacuse this is Star Wars IP. I didn’t give a **** about BF’s 3 DLCs.
