Star Wars Twitter Buzz: Is the Episode 7 Teaser Trailer Coming Sooner Than Expected?

jj-abrams-x-wingAs you might remember, 10 days ago we reported a rumor about John Williams, starting to work on the Episode VII teaser trailer, which was already sent to him (if you missed that story click HERE). Other sources in the same article suggested that the trailer will probably be officially released this Christmas. Now there’s a huge buzz on the web that we might actually be getting the trailer even sooner. Check out these curious tweets from the last few days after the jump:

First everything started with Peter Sciretta’s tweet:

And today Jordan Maison from Cinelinx (the guys who recently posted the Obi-Wan trilogy rumors) posted the following curious Tweets.

Later Jason Ward shared his input on the story:

Then Jason stirred the pot a bit when he Tweeted this:

If you read the responses you will discover that Jason is implying that the Episode VII teaser could drop with the November 21st release of Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 1). Jason isn’t sure as his info is still in development but that’s their insinuation. There is an obvious problem with this speculation being that Hunger Games is a Lionsgate Films franchise NOT related to Disney. As we detailed before, it only makes sense that we will get a teaser so long as Disney can attach it to one of their own films since such marketing dynamite would surely add box office profits to whatever film it would be released with.

This is the same reason why the Interstellar rumor didn’t make sense. However, some would argue that Big Hero 6, slated for a November 7th release is too soon for the trailer to be completed and by now we’d surely have heard if this was the case. And our other speculation was that Into the Woods for Christmas was too late as rumblings are that we’ll see it in November. Disney did have a movie originally slated for November 21st — the Kevin Costner led McFarland — but it was pushed back to February of 2015.

So when will it be? End of November with Hunger Games or end of December with Into the Woods? Or maybe something else? What do you think?

Thanks to Cantina member entourage for the heads up on these tweets.

I would be surprised if the CG would be ready for a teaser so soon, even basic shots take weeks to complete. The only plausible teaser would have to be very short and/or feature little or no CG.

The movie’s special effects will have been in full-steam production for many months, so there will be plenty ready for a trailer, especially if ILM knew far in advance which shots had been selected for inclusion.

This is just going to be a teaser trailer, which means it’s going to show the back of John Boyega, maybe R2D2 beeping, and then the title. No CG required. It may not even show any more words other than VII.

Can’t Disney release the trailer on the internet tomorrow and then attach it to a movie later this year? This isn’t the 90s, when hordes rushed into “Meet Joe Black” to get a glimpse of TPM.

Why does everyone think the VFX are starting now? They’ve been working on VFX for over a year now maybe longer. And fast tracking the VFX for the teaser trailer was top priority.

…maybe people are assuming there are no special effects with all the emphasis on location filming and full-scale models.

I don’t blame people for being confused and anxious. After all, if this was a Marvel movie, we’d get not only the title and trailer, but a 5 minute sneak peek by now.

This is Ep 7 we’re talking, made by JJ and KK. There are no CGI, only props, masks, puppets and real sets. The trailer requires only JW’s music and editing.

Does no one remember that Episode I’s teaser was release first with Meet Joe Black from Universal, when the SW property was still with Fox/Lucasfilm.

Studios want greater exposure for their trailers, they don’t care too much if they are on their films. It doesn’t boost a film’s attendance by such a significant amount if they attach a trailer.

Plenty of trailers are released without a tie-in to a company property. Ep1’s first teaser was attached to “A Bug’s Life,” remember.

As for the CG, this movie has been in production for a long time now – there’s plenty of CG that can have been done by now and it’s possible that the trailer will be of things that aren’t necessarily in the movie itself (that happens all the time, particularly with teasers and particularly with JJ Abrams).

I would think Hunger Games would make a better audience for a SW trailer than Into the Woods ever will. But it’s equally possible this gets released online before it hits theatres. Anymore, online audience (and having something go viral, like the Ultron trailer did) is just as important. Perhaps you attach it to a Rebels episode…or really…anything on ABC that you want to draw people into. Agents of SHIELD…Modern Family…Monday Night Football. I think trying to figure out what movie it’ll air in front of is short sighted.

I think a teaser trailer could include something about the villain (grave robber/zorro character?). Deven Faraci implied that the actor playing the villain would blow us away – by that I’m taking he meant favourably surprised and impressed (so not likely to be Luke). If the sequels revolve around this ‘unusual’ villain, it would make sense to give us a taste to wet out appetites.

    • November 5, 2014 at 10:03 pm

This is not uncommon. Many films will send things to the editors to assemble as they are still working on the film. This allows you to get a sort of rough cut which is continually tweaked. The rough cut would be void of special effects which probably are still being created.

Since Scenes are not always completed at the same time, this means that you will have many scenes partially finished for extended periods of time as you wait for either the remaining shots, or space fights with CGI in the case of those scenes. The close ups in the cock pits might exist, but the remainder of the scene is probably not done.

I expect a trailer to be light on special effects type shots, at least on huge space battles at this point in time because those scenes will take longer to assemble.

Such an exciting time to be a SW fan… guys we just have a little over a year to wait.

I’m very suspicious about the trailer though… I mean every SW film to date had it’s earliest trailer 5 or 6 months prior to release (tops) + title + knowing JJ it might take even longer as into darkness didn’t get a trailer until just a couple months before release. I think we’ll have to wait a long time for the trailer… probably the summer. I hope I’m wrong.

      I’m very suspicious too.
But the last Star Wars teaser trailer we had was nearly 10 years ago, for the “Revenge of the Sith”.
Things have considerably changed since then and it’s very common now to get trailers looong before a movie release.
Can Lucasfilm/Disney ignore that? I don’t think so. That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised to finally see a teaser trailer sooner than expected.

Remember too, this is also only the very first teaser. They won’t necessarily do a full-on trailer for quite some time yet.

Though the trailers for the PT films are all over YouTube as “teasers”, the actual teasers (at least for ROTS) were far shorter and contained virtually no footage from the upcoming film. The first ROTS trailer I remember seeing contained mostly shots from the other SW films, with the only ROTS shot being a short one of Anakin and Obi Wan standing by the window in the Jedi Temple (that shot also appeared in the full trailer.)

I would expect the initial Episode 7 teaser to be similar. Pitch the familiar Star Wars brand using some classic footage, tuck in a new shot or two from the new film to get everyone jazzed, and then fade to black and “Coming in December of 2015.”

If it ends up being more extensive than that as far as new footage goes, I’ll be doing backflips, as I’m sure everyone else here will be. But at this point I’d caution everyone to try not to over-expect on this first teaser.

Aras Volodka… Really? I remember getting the Into Darkness trailer quite a while (6 months) before the film actually hit theaters. Also a trailer a teaser a year in advance wouldn’t be shocking, and it would be a part of a larger marketing strategy to get every seat on opening weekend and week filled from front to back. I think were gonna get maybe some 5 to 6 trailers, told from different perspectives in order to grab the attention of all audiences.

Revenge of the Sith is only good in your biased opinion because it fits the sound of Return of the Jedi. Personally I think that was a bad an unoriginal title.

While I agree that the title Attack of the Clones should have been pitched into deep space, Phantom Menace is a very elegant and mysterious title because it can refer to Palpatine, the Sith order in general… or even the rising threat of Darth Vader.

I hope VII will be called The Ancient Fear.

The title the phantom menace does not refer to Palatine vader or the empire. No offense but I thought the movie sucked and I am confused by people who seem to like it and yet didn’t seem to follow it. In the movie a “phatom menace” was created by palpatine as a excuse for seizing more power. (A common ploy used through out history) the phantom menace is a false or imagine danger. A spoke or boogie man

That wouldn’t make any sense, because Hobbit fans will automatically go to see SWVII. They want to reach another demographic rather than fanboys, pique the interest of girls and young women 10-25. HG is the logical movie to attach a teaser if you want a broader audience, then the theater chains can attach it to Exodus, Bosses, Madscar in following weeks and reach other demographics, which is brilliant.

The minute Yoda started talking suspension of disbelief went out the window because “That’s Grover. Nope, not some puppet Jedi master, that is Grover the monster.”

Of all the possible movies, I hope it’s attached to “Mockingjay” because I would actually pay money to watch that in a theater. “Into the Woods” I’ll watch on DVD. “The Hobbit III: Extraneous Padding On Parade” I’ll watch if my parents (who buy more movies than I do) happen to buy it. Maybe. If there’s nothing else to watch instead. Like the old Laserdiscs of Star Wars. (I could READ “The Hobbit” in the time it took to watch the first one.) If it’s on that, I’ll watch in online.

If it’s attached to HG, it won’t be a simple teaser with music, logo and some iconic image, it will include clips of Ridley so moviergoers will realize the hero of the new SW saga is actually a heroine. Teaser for the female crowd.
Perhaps John Williams had to compose a brief excerpt of his theme for Ridley’s character to be used in the teaser.
You never know, they might make several variations. A variant with Droids for the Madscar kids, then one with Han and Chewie for the Bosses crowd. That would be smart, like when they release variant covers.
