Star Wars Twitter Buzz: Is the Episode 7 Teaser Trailer Coming Sooner Than Expected?

jj-abrams-x-wingAs you might remember, 10 days ago we reported a rumor about John Williams, starting to work on the Episode VII teaser trailer, which was already sent to him (if you missed that story click HERE). Other sources in the same article suggested that the trailer will probably be officially released this Christmas. Now there’s a huge buzz on the web that we might actually be getting the trailer even sooner. Check out these curious tweets from the last few days after the jump:

First everything started with Peter Sciretta’s tweet:

And today Jordan Maison from Cinelinx (the guys who recently posted the Obi-Wan trilogy rumors) posted the following curious Tweets.

Later Jason Ward shared his input on the story:

Then Jason stirred the pot a bit when he Tweeted this:

If you read the responses you will discover that Jason is implying that the Episode VII teaser could drop with the November 21st release of Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 1). Jason isn’t sure as his info is still in development but that’s their insinuation. There is an obvious problem with this speculation being that Hunger Games is a Lionsgate Films franchise NOT related to Disney. As we detailed before, it only makes sense that we will get a teaser so long as Disney can attach it to one of their own films since such marketing dynamite would surely add box office profits to whatever film it would be released with.

This is the same reason why the Interstellar rumor didn’t make sense. However, some would argue that Big Hero 6, slated for a November 7th release is too soon for the trailer to be completed and by now we’d surely have heard if this was the case. And our other speculation was that Into the Woods for Christmas was too late as rumblings are that we’ll see it in November. Disney did have a movie originally slated for November 21st — the Kevin Costner led McFarland — but it was pushed back to February of 2015.

So when will it be? End of November with Hunger Games or end of December with Into the Woods? Or maybe something else? What do you think?

Thanks to Cantina member entourage for the heads up on these tweets.

I would be surprised if the CG would be ready for a teaser so soon, even basic shots take weeks to complete. The only plausible teaser would have to be very short and/or feature little or no CG.

    • November 5, 2014 at 7:55 pm

The movie’s special effects will have been in full-steam production for many months, so there will be plenty ready for a trailer, especially if ILM knew far in advance which shots had been selected for inclusion.

    • November 5, 2014 at 8:03 pm

This is just going to be a teaser trailer, which means it’s going to show the back of John Boyega, maybe R2D2 beeping, and then the title. No CG required. It may not even show any more words other than VII.

Can’t Disney release the trailer on the internet tomorrow and then attach it to a movie later this year? This isn’t the 90s, when hordes rushed into “Meet Joe Black” to get a glimpse of TPM.

      • November 5, 2014 at 8:43 pm

Back then I was able to find a good quality trailer release from the studio online shortly after it was released. Downloaded it back then.

        • November 5, 2014 at 9:01 pm

Why does everyone think the VFX are starting now? They’ve been working on VFX for over a year now maybe longer. And fast tracking the VFX for the teaser trailer was top priority.

          • November 6, 2014 at 2:17 am

…maybe people are assuming there are no special effects with all the emphasis on location filming and full-scale models.

I don’t blame people for being confused and anxious. After all, if this was a Marvel movie, we’d get not only the title and trailer, but a 5 minute sneak peek by now.

    • November 5, 2014 at 9:49 pm

Why there has to be cg in a teaser trailer?

      • November 6, 2014 at 9:43 am

This is Ep 7 we’re talking, made by JJ and KK. There are no CGI, only props, masks, puppets and real sets. The trailer requires only JW’s music and editing.

  • November 5, 2014 at 7:48 pm

I’m almost certain it’ll be released with Into The Woods. That would work perfectly. But hey, you never know…

I will say this though: when it gets released, I’m gonna totally lose my shit!

  • November 5, 2014 at 7:50 pm

Since meeting with such success when releasing the avengers 2 teaser online, the top brass has decided to release the trailer on YouTube on Christmas Day.

  • November 5, 2014 at 7:58 pm

Does no one remember that Episode I’s teaser was release first with Meet Joe Black from Universal, when the SW property was still with Fox/Lucasfilm.

Studios want greater exposure for their trailers, they don’t care too much if they are on their films. It doesn’t boost a film’s attendance by such a significant amount if they attach a trailer.

    • November 5, 2014 at 10:44 pm

      Yeah it’s called the internet

    • November 8, 2014 at 6:07 am

TPM trailer was attached to “Wing Commander” first, right ?

  • November 5, 2014 at 8:01 pm

Plenty of trailers are released without a tie-in to a company property. Ep1’s first teaser was attached to “A Bug’s Life,” remember.

As for the CG, this movie has been in production for a long time now – there’s plenty of CG that can have been done by now and it’s possible that the trailer will be of things that aren’t necessarily in the movie itself (that happens all the time, particularly with teasers and particularly with JJ Abrams).

I would think Hunger Games would make a better audience for a SW trailer than Into the Woods ever will. But it’s equally possible this gets released online before it hits theatres. Anymore, online audience (and having something go viral, like the Ultron trailer did) is just as important. Perhaps you attach it to a Rebels episode…or really…anything on ABC that you want to draw people into. Agents of SHIELD…Modern Family…Monday Night Football. I think trying to figure out what movie it’ll air in front of is short sighted.

    • November 5, 2014 at 8:04 pm

what, you mean there’s going to be CGI in Episode VII?

      • November 5, 2014 at 8:07 pm

There will be CGI i EPVII

    • November 5, 2014 at 8:55 pm

Wait a minute, nobody told me about any CGI.

      What is going on?

      • November 6, 2014 at 12:23 am

        clowny giant iguana?

        • November 6, 2014 at 2:24 am

as long as they don’t go overboard with earth plants and earth snakes, like ESB, I’ll be ok. Some of those Dagobah scenes really cheaped that film and took me out of the experience.

          • November 6, 2014 at 7:25 am

How come there can be human beings on other planets and that doesn’t bother you but snakes do?
I don’t think you have this complaint much thought

          • November 6, 2014 at 7:31 am

That is halarious. All of the awful crap that made up the pt was just fine with you. But a snake ruined arguably the best fantasy movie of all time for you. Wow!

      • November 6, 2014 at 6:04 am

They’re only using CGI for Jar Jar.

  • November 5, 2014 at 8:11 pm

Ny sources say that the movie will be out before summer and that Jabba is the cyborg.
And that’s the trailer will be all OT material and that it will reveal the name of the movie.

    • November 6, 2014 at 2:25 am

I heard that the name of the film is Star Wars VII: Luke’s Big Adventure. Music by Danny Elfman.

  • November 5, 2014 at 8:16 pm

I think a teaser trailer could include something about the villain (grave robber/zorro character?). Deven Faraci implied that the actor playing the villain would blow us away – by that I’m taking he meant favourably surprised and impressed (so not likely to be Luke). If the sequels revolve around this ‘unusual’ villain, it would make sense to give us a taste to wet out appetites.

  • November 5, 2014 at 8:18 pm

    OH MY

  • November 5, 2014 at 8:28 pm

Man I went to see wing commander for episode 1 trailer that movie sucked

    • November 6, 2014 at 4:10 pm

By the end of the movie, my friends and I were heckling it loudly (and getting audience reaction) MST3K style. Wing Commander was awful, but we had a blast.

  • November 5, 2014 at 8:47 pm

Kevin smith said he saw scenes put together, no reason why a teaser couldn’t be soon

    • November 5, 2014 at 10:03 pm

This is not uncommon. Many films will send things to the editors to assemble as they are still working on the film. This allows you to get a sort of rough cut which is continually tweaked. The rough cut would be void of special effects which probably are still being created.

Since Scenes are not always completed at the same time, this means that you will have many scenes partially finished for extended periods of time as you wait for either the remaining shots, or space fights with CGI in the case of those scenes. The close ups in the cock pits might exist, but the remainder of the scene is probably not done.

I expect a trailer to be light on special effects type shots, at least on huge space battles at this point in time because those scenes will take longer to assemble.

  • November 5, 2014 at 8:59 pm

What if it premiered during like the super bowl or something? That would be AWESOME

    • November 6, 2014 at 2:26 am

no, disney is saving that for a movie they are really interested in making, avengers 2, captain america 4, or whatever the hell they are doing with Marvel…

    • November 6, 2014 at 10:59 pm

i think probably a teaser on christmas and full trailer for the super bowl

  • November 5, 2014 at 8:59 pm

There are no words using the English Alphabet or the Aurebesh that can describe the excitement I am barely containing…:)

    • November 5, 2014 at 9:51 pm

Ok, i’m not english nor live in a galaxy far, far away, but that was funny!
      LoL 😉

  • November 5, 2014 at 9:29 pm

    can’t wait any more!!!

  • November 5, 2014 at 9:52 pm

Search your audience, you know they want it to be true

  • November 5, 2014 at 9:54 pm

The teaser trailer will probably be a lightsaber igniting and then VII and that’s it, which would reveal nothing

  • November 5, 2014 at 9:54 pm

I just cant wait to see trailer
I hope, it will be contains real footage, not stupid CGI words and voices off-screen, like Marvel Cinematic Universe teasers.

  • November 5, 2014 at 9:55 pm

I feel poorly for a legend called John Williams.
Insert money to get epic score

  • November 5, 2014 at 9:59 pm

Such an exciting time to be a SW fan… guys we just have a little over a year to wait.

I’m very suspicious about the trailer though… I mean every SW film to date had it’s earliest trailer 5 or 6 months prior to release (tops) + title + knowing JJ it might take even longer as into darkness didn’t get a trailer until just a couple months before release. I think we’ll have to wait a long time for the trailer… probably the summer. I hope I’m wrong.

      • November 5, 2014 at 11:00 pm

        no Jar Jar

        • November 5, 2014 at 11:46 pm

Still though… look at the pattern for older SW releases. You’re right, Disney will decide… but they might stick with that pattern.

    • November 6, 2014 at 6:58 am

My guess is that a full trailer will come out with Avengers: Age Of Ultron – just a few days before May the 4th. I did expect a teaser to hit at the end of this year, though. Great to hear it could be very soon.

    • November 6, 2014 at 9:12 am

      I’m very suspicious too.
But the last Star Wars teaser trailer we had was nearly 10 years ago, for the “Revenge of the Sith”.
Things have considerably changed since then and it’s very common now to get trailers looong before a movie release.
Can Lucasfilm/Disney ignore that? I don’t think so. That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised to finally see a teaser trailer sooner than expected.

  • November 5, 2014 at 10:33 pm

I can see them releasing a trailer on mocking jay movie to get female audience interested. But watch it be like less then a min?

    • November 6, 2014 at 2:28 am

Imagine if they get the Hunger Games crowd, and young female viewers to see VII multiple times like fanboys…. This movie will be BIG.

  • November 5, 2014 at 10:38 pm

I hope it shows during Big Hero 6.. Taking the kids over the weekend

  • November 5, 2014 at 10:48 pm

I just want to see the old cast in the teaser!

    • November 6, 2014 at 2:28 am

Why? We know what they look and act like, from three other films. I want to see the new cast, you know, what we have 0% knowledge about.

      • November 6, 2014 at 4:37 am

Why? Because I haven’t seen Luke Skywalker in thirty freaking years. If you want to get excited about characters you know nothing about, knock yourself out.

  • November 5, 2014 at 11:33 pm

Remember too, this is also only the very first teaser. They won’t necessarily do a full-on trailer for quite some time yet.

Though the trailers for the PT films are all over YouTube as “teasers”, the actual teasers (at least for ROTS) were far shorter and contained virtually no footage from the upcoming film. The first ROTS trailer I remember seeing contained mostly shots from the other SW films, with the only ROTS shot being a short one of Anakin and Obi Wan standing by the window in the Jedi Temple (that shot also appeared in the full trailer.)

I would expect the initial Episode 7 teaser to be similar. Pitch the familiar Star Wars brand using some classic footage, tuck in a new shot or two from the new film to get everyone jazzed, and then fade to black and “Coming in December of 2015.”

If it ends up being more extensive than that as far as new footage goes, I’ll be doing backflips, as I’m sure everyone else here will be. But at this point I’d caution everyone to try not to over-expect on this first teaser.

  • November 5, 2014 at 11:47 pm

I’d be happy with a movie title right now, i’m not expecting much, but it’s something iconic you can chew on.

  • November 5, 2014 at 11:48 pm

Aras Volodka… Really? I remember getting the Into Darkness trailer quite a while (6 months) before the film actually hit theaters. Also a trailer a teaser a year in advance wouldn’t be shocking, and it would be a part of a larger marketing strategy to get every seat on opening weekend and week filled from front to back. I think were gonna get maybe some 5 to 6 trailers, told from different perspectives in order to grab the attention of all audiences.

  • November 5, 2014 at 11:52 pm

Xmas would be the time, surely- over a year in advance..?

    • November 6, 2014 at 1:14 am

      I’m a fan!

  • November 6, 2014 at 12:20 am

I hope they come up with a decent title…

Phantom Menace & Attack of the Clones sucked…Revenge of the Sith seemed to fit better with the others at least.

I think the word Force should be in it…

Inheritence of The Force…Destiny of the Force

Maybe they will release it with the trailer

    • November 6, 2014 at 2:35 am

Revenge of the Sith is only good in your biased opinion because it fits the sound of Return of the Jedi. Personally I think that was a bad an unoriginal title.

While I agree that the title Attack of the Clones should have been pitched into deep space, Phantom Menace is a very elegant and mysterious title because it can refer to Palpatine, the Sith order in general… or even the rising threat of Darth Vader.

I hope VII will be called The Ancient Fear.

      • November 6, 2014 at 4:35 am

What, you don’t think YOUR opinion is biased? Exactly what do you think opinions are?

      • November 6, 2014 at 7:47 am

The title the phantom menace does not refer to Palatine vader or the empire. No offense but I thought the movie sucked and I am confused by people who seem to like it and yet didn’t seem to follow it. In the movie a “phatom menace” was created by palpatine as a excuse for seizing more power. (A common ploy used through out history) the phantom menace is a false or imagine danger. A spoke or boogie man

        • November 6, 2014 at 8:10 am

Phantom menace always reminded me of the two ronnies, phantom raspberry blower, on uk 80s tv.

          • November 6, 2014 at 8:01 pm

How about the Phantom Flan Flinger from Tiswas

        • November 6, 2014 at 4:17 pm

ummmmmmmm…i dont know wtf your smoking…but “The Phantom menace” most certainly was referring to palpatine and his alter ego Sidious….wow.Lucas himself confirmed that. go back to the trekkie boards son…you dont belong here!

      • November 6, 2014 at 7:52 am

Why would you hope it’s called an ancient fear? You don’t even know if that title would fit the story. People say some crazy shit on here.

      • November 6, 2014 at 4:25 pm

wow….we got a real live one here…super genius at work…it only sounds like it fits with return of the jedi??? LOLOL Revenge of the Sith was a perfect title for the movie..not because it fit return of the Jedi…but because it fit the damn story. that title was chosen before the Phantom menace was even written. Lucas decided to name it Revenge of the Sith around the time return of the Jedi came out.. originally Return of the Jedi was called Revenge of the Jedi. Lucas Changed it…and then decided to name Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith…common knowledge.they mirror each other..and i can bet anything that Episode 9 will have a title in the same vein. i really wish people who didnt know shit about star wars would stop posting on here trying to pass off some assumption they came up with in their heads to be a fact… good god

      • November 6, 2014 at 8:05 pm

        Boom…there you go…

        The Force Awakens

        Thanks for coming….

      • November 6, 2014 at 11:22 pm

What other kind of opinion is there beside biased ?
It’s opinion it’s biased by definition dumbass

  • November 6, 2014 at 1:39 am

Luke Skywalker with hood & beard!

  • November 6, 2014 at 1:44 am

Does anybody remember how early JJ put out the Super 8 teaser? Exactly, 1 year early. So why wouldn’t we think it could be plausible for a Xmas teaser?

  • November 6, 2014 at 4:53 am

I’m going to leave this bit of info and then slowly walk away from the internet and then run like hell..Harrison Ford is who Deven Faraci is on about as the Villain

  • November 6, 2014 at 5:08 am

It could feasibly be attached to “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”. Just a thought.

    • November 6, 2014 at 5:51 am

That wouldn’t make any sense, because Hobbit fans will automatically go to see SWVII. They want to reach another demographic rather than fanboys, pique the interest of girls and young women 10-25. HG is the logical movie to attach a teaser if you want a broader audience, then the theater chains can attach it to Exodus, Bosses, Madscar in following weeks and reach other demographics, which is brilliant.

  • November 6, 2014 at 5:39 am

Could be worse than Earth snakes on Dagobah, you could have been like my Mom. She had two toddlers at home who needless to say watched Sesame Street. A lot. The minute Yoda started talking suspension of disbelief went out the window because “That’s Grover. Nope, not some puppet Jedi master, that is Grover the monster.”

Of all the possible movies, I hope it’s attached to “Mockingjay” because I would actually pay money to watch that in a theater. “Into the Woods” I’ll watch on DVD. “The Hobbit III: Extraneous Padding On Parade” I’ll watch if my parents (who buy more movies than I do) happen to buy it. Maybe. If there’s nothing else to watch instead. Like the old Laserdiscs of Star Wars. (I could READ “The Hobbit” in the time it took to watch the first one.) If it’s on that, I’ll watch in online.

  • November 6, 2014 at 8:01 am

If it’s attached to HG, it won’t be a simple teaser with music, logo and some iconic image, it will include clips of Ridley so moviergoers will realize the hero of the new SW saga is actually a heroine. Teaser for the female crowd.
Perhaps John Williams had to compose a brief excerpt of his theme for Ridley’s character to be used in the teaser.
You never know, they might make several variations. A variant with Droids for the Madscar kids, then one with Han and Chewie for the Bosses crowd. That would be smart, like when they release variant covers.

  • November 6, 2014 at 9:47 am

Once I learn that the trailer has been released, my body shall release everything it holds that it can dump, and euphoria shall reign for several minutes before I dare watch it. Hopefully, the results will be positive.

    • November 6, 2014 at 12:04 pm

Yeah… and change your pants. 0_o

  • November 6, 2014 at 12:41 pm

wasn’t there a rumbling about something being attached to agents of shield? the mid season finale is on the 19th of november, four days after john williams was rumoured to be recording the music for the trailer. if it’s already cut 4 days is plenty.

  • November 6, 2014 at 12:51 pm

Big Hero 6 makes a ton of sense….today’s kids are the kids of EpIV’s kids….

I know my 8 year old has become a Star Wars fan. He even just re-did his bedroom in a Star Wars theme. Big Hero 6 would only bring in the rest of his classmates who haven’t hopped on board yet.

Hunger Games also makes sense because of the heroine angle…

  • November 6, 2014 at 2:06 pm

I love that idea that they should produce different trailers for the different audiences but lets hope they don’t show too much. However won’t the trailer be released online as soon as it comes out?
I remember how slow my download of TPM was and it took days so I spent the first day just watching the mist on the Naboo swamp and these strange creatures appearing. But the music was my biggest memory.

  • November 6, 2014 at 4:30 pm

i just hope they keep most of the film/surprises under wraps for release, then it will really blow people away

  • November 6, 2014 at 11:21 pm

Just one shoot, Luke in shadows saying anything scary…

    • November 9, 2014 at 1:49 pm

Well, Luke WAS starting to get a little dark by the end of the OT! what with his black suit and cloak and all. Maybe he isn’t quite as charming as Alec was, and he scares the crap out of the new, younger cast!

  • November 8, 2014 at 3:07 am

I think we might get a Star Wars trailer with Hunger Games and then maybe an Ant-Man trailer or another avengers trailer at Christmas. I know if the Star Wars trailer comes with Into The Woods I will be going to a matinee showing to see the trailer then leaving before the movie because I can’t stand ItW. It’s stories I love all mashed together into what I can only refer to as a complete mess. The only musical I’ve seen that I dislike more is Spider-Man Turn off the Dark.

  • November 9, 2014 at 7:44 pm
