Rumor: New Star Wars Animated Series to be Set During the Sequel Trilogy?

Rebels_0811The guys from /Film have another interesting scoop this week. According to their sources Star Wars: Rebels will run for three or four seasons, before a new Star Wars animated series with new characters kicks in. More details after the break…

From /Film:

Rumor has it that Disney and Lucasfilm are planning to do “about” three or four seasons of Star Wars Rebels before starting a whole new Star Wars animated series, with all new characters, set in the timeline of the current movies.

Since this is so early, there aren’t a lot of specific details. The new cartoon series will be set during the Sequel Trilogy timeline (Episodes VII and beyond), which will be very familiar to fans by that time. If Rebels does go three or four seasons, the new show would hypothetically start in 2017 or 2018, around the same time we’ll see Star Wars Episode VIII. That means we’ll have at least one, possibly two movies of world building in which to set up a new story and set of characters.

Good, good … heh-heh-heh. Variety is the spice of life in the Star Wars galaxy! Happy to have a series looking forward and not filling in the gaps of long-past events.

I hope so, Rebels is really flat… Ezra is annoying, Kanan is not a believable Jedi, the ‘lets get Chopper’ rubbish between Ezra, Zeb and Chopper was boring to begin with and most of all the soundtrack is terrible. Hate to say it but it looks like a dud.

    Clone Wars had depth.

Absolutely agree. In the OT there was risk, great cost, sacrifice, and if you went against the empire too much you ended up as smoking bones (Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru).
Then came the Ewoks….and it was like, ‘WTF’. Rebels has continued to aim the franchise at kids and if you doubt that, just take a good look at ‘Art Attack’. Seriously??? A paint bomb going off in the face of storm troopers is even remotely funny? Maybe to a kid yeah, but for the older crowd such as myself, Rebels has as much depth as the adventures of Scooby Doo. If your going to do an animated series, do what the OT did and make it appealing to older people yet at the same time, make it appealing to kids as well. The OT did this so well.

You think another animated show would be different? I don’t think so.

Uhhh did you ever see the *other* clone wars cartoon that was made by the creator of Samurai Jack? Much better than any other animated flick in the SW universe.

All of these animated series are leaving a bad taste in my mouth. They are incredibly heartless, with characters I couldn’t give a flying cow pie about. They are not the Star Wars I know and love, and just seem to irritate me and cheapen the product. The animation style leaves me cold as well.

The original animated Clone Wars from 2003 & 2005 were so good. Have you seen them? I haven’t seen too much of 2008 Clone Wars or any Rebels, but that 2-D Clone Wars cartoon was really well made.

    Keen.
I feel like clone wars went on too long (not saying I didn’t enjoy it all). 3 to 4 seasons would be the right amount. Or perhaps 5 so it can flow into A New Hope.
If this new series is set post episode 9 it would help set up a 10-12 trilogy. Hopefully by then they’ve made a few more character models 😛

I would bet that’s the time period they’ll be covering. Makes the most sense! Whoever is speculating this rumor isn’t using their brain. There’s a lot of room between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. I want to see Chewbacca babysitting some Han and Leia babies!

With new SW movies being released every year, hopefully all these cartoons don’t start over-saturating the franchise overall.

It would suck if it all ends up becoming just too much SW shit everywhere.

Unfortunately I believe Disney will milk the franchise for all it’s worth, it will be overkill. They will make as much money out of this as they possibly can, films, TV, books, merch of every medium, but let’s hope there is a good film or two in there

Of course it is possible, especially if SW keeps being milked for all its worth. Qu@ntity does not equal quality (just ask the TONS of PT haters out there, if you don’t believe me).

In a way, it was kinda cool waiting with excitement at the next SW that was coming every few years. It made it a special event. Of course, it was frustrating but still fun.

The way Disney is handling things, SW is going to be all over the place. And, they’re still talking about the possibility of a live-action tv show too?!

I LOVE SW and all but too much of a good thing could ruin it. I love steak, but I don’t want to eat the shit every fucking day.

The “fanbase” are such jokers. Whinge when no films are made for years. Whinge now there’s going to be loads of films. Whinge how shite clone wars is then when rebels comes along, look back on the glory days of the clone wars. Whinge about too much CGI. Whinge at the lack of OT vibe. Whinge there is too much OT vibe. Whinge about EVERYTHING. Stop the whinging. I fucking love Star Wars. I am happy for Disney to make shit loads of media, I will digest it all and yes there will be some bad but I won’t Whinge cause it’s bad STAR WARS. Bad Star Wars is far greater than mediocre anything else. If you don’t agree with that sentiment, what the fuck you doing here?

You’re right! I hope they bring back Clone Wars, make Clone Wars sequel movies every year, Rebels should go on forever plus Rebels movies and sequels, there should be episode movies every year, there should be spinoffs every year, Lego cartoon should go on forever plus Lego sequel movies, there should be 3 or 4 live tv shows, there should be monthly specials, holiday specials for every holiday, cable documentaries every week, a Disney SW-only channel, and a nightly news program every night of the week that reports on more upcoming SW projects. Yes, only true fans would love that, right?

And, I agree, people need to stop whinging because whinge sounds like a major fuckin disease.

Sounds like a good idea, we have a cannon PT-era series, rebels is our OT-era series, so its only fair that after episode 7 or 8 comes out we get a ST-era series. Plus I have always found shorter, more driven series to be more enjoyable then most longer drawn-out series.
