‘Star Wars’ Celebration Returning to Japan in 2025

Lucasfilm let us know via a throwaway line in an article on their official website last month that Star Wars Celebration would not be returning in 2024, but instead, the next edition would take place in 2025. Today, during the closing ceremony for Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, it’s been announced it will be held at the Makuhari Messe center in Chiba, Japan, from April 18 to April 20.

This will be the second time the convention is held in Asia, having already been there in July 2008. Lucasfilm is apparently keen on touring around the world with it to allow people from all places to attend. After holding it in America in 2015, they went over to Europe this year, and the next stop is Asia. This also means that this is the first time that a Star Wars Celebration will be held in Japan since Disney’s 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm.

Should the current film release schedule hold, then Disney is expected to launch the next Star Wars theatrical feature film in 2025. While they didn’t announce which one it will be, all indications seem to indicate that it will be the one by director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which could reportedly start shooting next February. It was confirmed during this year’s convention that it will mark the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey in a story set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. If this is the case, and the movie does make it to the finish line, 2025 will be the return of Star Wars to the big screen, which will make for a giant event in a couple of years.

Aside from the 2025 movie, there is also another movie scheduled for 2027. Films in active development include the Dave Filoni-directed crossover event tied to The Mandalorian and its adjacent shows, James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi-era epic about the origins of the Jedi Order, and mysterious projects from Taika Waititi and Shawn Levy. In any case, expect future Star Wars Celebration events to be tied to release years for future Star Wars films.

However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as movies from Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
