Star Wars Rebels Review: S01 E03 “Rise of the Old Masters”

Ezra lightsaber

Disney has released the next episode of Star Wars Rebels: “Rise of the Old Masters” on their Disney XD app. Read our review after the jump…

Here’s a small excerpt from the review:

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm I think many long time fans were FRIGHTENED that the beloved Saga would be “Disneyfied”. (I love that word btw) After a mini film and 3 episodes into the first Disney/Lucasfilm led Star Wars series …I think it’s safe to say that this new era that Star Wars has entered…will be just fine.

After watching “Rise Of The Old Masters” twice now….I can say with 100% certainty that this episode might be one of my favorite moments in the Star Wars Saga….Yes…on par with the OT. Why? I’M SO GLAD YOU ASKED!!!

The episode order was changed by LFL. “Spark of Rebellion” is a pilot stand alone movie. “Droids in Distress” is ep.1 and “Fighter Flight” is ep.2.

I’m still waiting for the non-pilot episodes to show up on Comcast On Demand, but things sound exciting so far. 😀

I believe the new episodes air on Disney XD Mondays at 9 PM EST. When do re-runs normally air?

Episode can be viewed here, cable subscription-free: http://goo.gl/6GxjjG

This is the first episode that truly had that ‘…before the dark times…before the EMPIRE’ type of vibe. I’m a fan of the whole group now and will def be rooting for their success.

I saw it, but the picture in this news is a bit spoiler-ish. I didn’t expected him to show up in this Episode, and was really surprised. Maybe change it?

    [Quoted/Spoiler Caution]

“What would’ve been a perfect screenplay was pretty much cluster fcked by that little sht alien creature Kira travels around with. I’d honestly almost prefer Jar Jar to that little sht. At least Jar Jar had a purpose. We can only hope Andy can at least pull off a unique performance.

We saw this coming when JJ wanted that other little sht character with no purpose in Star Trek. The one Scottie totes around.”

If only they’d ditch Ezra’s electro wrist slingshot thingy. How/where is it drawing energy from and why isn’t it shocking the shit outta his fingertips when he pulls on it to fire??? Disney shoulda just gave him a pellet pistol and let Sabine paint it to look more kid-friendly or something.

All I’m seeing, is the obligation of being a Star Wars fan, to worship all that is Star Wars… It’s how religion came and stays in power…

Am i the only one who thinks that having Jedi in the series only 5 years before a new hope is a bad idea?and am i also the only one who feels that this nonsense is a mistake much much larger than all the mistakes and holes they dug in the PT that completely conflict with the Original’s? fuck Disney

I believe Kenobi says the Jedi are “all but extinct” in A New Hope? A couple of movies later we have Yoda telling Luke, “When gone am I, the last of the Jedi you will be”.

I guess this means that any Jedi featured in Rebels is doomed by canon to die within a very few years, BEFORE Yoda makes his remark. Whether we will ever get to see the relevant demise onscreen is of course another matter.

Rebels starts 5 years before ANH, and has a 5 year run planned out. My hunch is that however rebels ends will be tied directly into the opening crawl of ANH. To that extent, I keep picturing the ‘Final Flight of the Osiris’ from the Animatrix.

Stormtroopers are a bunch of suckers. They are blind , they can not shoot on target . The main characters in the three days they could defeat the entire empire

Personally i dont care if Rebels is good or not. It all comes down to if Episode 7 is good or not. If part 7 is good or great, then let the party begin. If part 7 suks, then SW is totaly destroyed.

Unbelievable that we don’t really got to see any kind of training (younglings aside) in the prequels…

It was good. I liked it.

What would be nice is if they could turn good into amazing.

I’m still not onboard with the animation, it reminds me too much of Shrek, it’s too glossy and bright. Maybe I’ll grow to like it as the series progresses and no doubt evolves, just like Clone Wars did.

Also, I wish they’d tone down all the goofing around, it’s really starting to annoy me. Hopefully that’ll all change once we’ve gotten to know the characters and as the story develops. And they need to make the Stormtroopers less pathetic. How could they miss at such close range and firing so many shots, it gives the impression that the heroes are invincible, so there’s never any real threat. I fear this show is going to prove to be just for the kids. I hope I’m wrong!
