Tabloid Rumor: Tom Cruise Reportedly Met Up With J.J. Abrams in London for Star Wars?

cruise & abrams

We all know that the 51-year-old actor is close friends with J.J. Abrams – who helmed Mission: Impossible 3. Cruise is indeed in London and such meeting shouldn’t be surprising at all. Now here’s where the tabloids come to play. According to The Sun the meeting was about Star Wars…

From entertainmentwise:

The 51-year-old actor is said to have met up with the film’s director J.J. Abrams in London over the weekend to discuss any involvement with the sci-fi blockbuster.

“Tom has been in London for over a week and met up with J.J. and some other people from Star Wars at the weekend,” a source told The Sun. “On Saturday evening five of them met up for dinner and drinks at the Belgravia Hotel. J.J. produced Mission: Impossible 5 and loves working with Tom whenever he gets the chance.”

While I believe they both did meet in London, I think Cruise’s involvement with Star Wars is highly unlikely.

Unless he is completely covered in “alien” makeup, I don’t want to see Tom Cruise in Star Wars.

The formula has always been to use relatively fresh faces for the main cast, with only a few more seasoned and well-known actors thrown in to anchor the whole thing (Sir Alec, Liam Neeson, McDiarmid etc). This would be von Sydow’s task this time around. Hollywood A-listers would just be distracting. The all-too-familiar face gets in the way of the character.

    J. J. had dinner with Daniel Day-Lewis too, and sadly nothing came of that meeting nor was there necessarily any talk whatsoever of Star Wars during the encounter. This is probably the case here as well.

Honestly, though, I do think Tom Cruise could play a pretty cool Jedi or Sith – I could see him playing a Samuel L. Jackson/Mace Windu type of role – but with J. J.’s adeptness at secrecy I doubt he would meet with a potential candidate for future casting in such a public setting.

somewhat agree, while i doubt he would be in star wars, there is no reason he couldn’t and as long as the acting is believable, wouldn’t make a huge dif.

NO, no, and definitely NO. Don’t give Tom any role in SW7. In the name of God, I prefer to see Hayden Christensen again to see Tom Cruise. I hope conversations would be about some other projects.

Why on Earth WOULDN’T Hayden Christiansen be in the new Star Wars films? It would actually be sort of odd if Anakin and Obi-wan did NOT turn up as Force ghosts to chat with Luke or possibly others at some point. I’m kind of hoping it happens in this film and they’re just keeping it secret but we’ll see.

I am sure that while directing Star War 7 is fun, think about the stress that JJ must be under having to oversee so much, + Ford’s accident. If he wants to take an evening or two and have dinner with an old friend, I say go JJ! You deserve a break often with the load you are having to bear.

The Sun is notoriously unreliable. In the early 90’s they reported that Macauley Culkin was going to play Anakin in the prequels. Seriously.

Don’t even worry about it. JJ and many others know that a famous face like that is just to much. To well known to really immerse the viewer. I know SW has had famous faces in the past but we should compare it to the OT. Sir Alec Guinness was pretty much the only known actor and he was playing the typical wise sage. So having some respectability and known quality to the character was acceptable. I don’t see Cruise wanting to be that type of character…

    “J.J. produced Mission: Impossible 5”
5 hasn’t been made yet. I guess they mean 4. But according to wiki, 5 is being made in… London. That explains why Cruise is in London. There is no way he would have a recognizable role in Star Wars. Maybe under a full mask. It runs counter to everything we have heard on how J.J. is handling casting. The reaction is just silly. Cruise having a cameo that needs to be pointed out will not ruin Star Wars. And I seriously doubt any Star Wars fan would abandon the film just because Cruise makes a small cameo that they can’t even recognize. I you would, then you need serious help.

MI5 is in pre-production and indeed Abrams is producing. That’s one of the reasons why I think the meeting is not Star Wars related.

There is a big difference between “produced” and “is producing.” The former suggests he is done producing, while the latter suggests he is in the process. So they are wrong, going by what they actually wrote.

But Tom Cruise + Star Wars = notgonnahappen. When I see a Tom Cruise movie, it see just exactly that: “A Tom Cruise Movie”. Star Wars is so much bigger than one man. Let the tabloids have their fun, but also let J.J. hang out with his famous friends from time to time without strings attached to SW.

I`m only ~70% sure of this. But the role he would audition for would mostly likely be be for a low paid disgruntled freighter pilot, an old buddy of han solo that shared a jealous rivalry. As cruise`s character made the kessel run in less time. Creating friction between the two.

Tweeted by Abe Gurko who is Carrie’s close friend and in London with her right now.. Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley are a given. Billie Lourd is Carrie’s daughter. But Maisie Richardson Sellers??..

    • June 23, 2014 at 8:21 pm
      Permalink

She was rumored to have a role in the production earlier on, and the initial casting call did ask for another girl who was about the same age as Daisy Ridley… This could be very interesting indeed.

    • June 23, 2014 at 10:26 pm
      Permalink

I think it is terrific if it is indeed true that Maisie Richardson-Sellers is among those cast in the sequel trilogy, as it seems there is likely to be a whole slew of new characters penned into the continuing saga, and so long as it is in line with Abrams, Kasdan and Lucas’ vision, as a fan I am most pleased with any additional personalities thrown into the Star Wars universe. In any case, the fresh canon is already looking to be a goldmine wrought with potential, at least from my perspective.

Hypothetically speaking, I am curious as to how big a role she could play at this point, though, and with all of the gossip about Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher playing key roles (with various sources claiming Ford’s role as being the most significant), Chewie theoretically being at Han’s side and new talents such as Daisy, Boyega, Gleeson, Oscar, etc. where would that leave everybody’s favorite droid duo? Will their roles be as big as in the original trilogy or more in line with the prequels, I wonder.

I’m not so happy if it’s true. I mean let’s take luke, leia, han, chewie, r2, c3p0. Well the first film just had an additional 3; obi-wan, tarkin, and vader). Well episode vii currently has an extra 9 .. and now 10 if Maisie is in it. How many major characters do they need ?!

        • June 24, 2014 at 12:07 am
          Permalink

But it’s not clear if they’re all major characters. Also, the Prequel Trilogy necessitated a larger cast, and I’m sure that this will as well.

Mission Impossible 5 is filming in the United Kingdom, specifically Britain – which is also where Star Wars VII is being filmed. I think it’s more likely that Tom Cruise was just taking advantage of the opportunity to meet with an old friend than actually getting into talks to do a Star Wars movie.
