I couldn’t help my self, I had to play it of course – but I was really afraid it would give up too much.
Glad to see it doesn’t – it just had small bits and pieces to what we already knew from the previous trailer.
And, by the way: the more I see it, the more I find Kylo Ren’s sabre to be amazing 🙂

After watching this new trailer a thought came to my mind. Perhaps Luke doens’t appear because he is the “Rebels” BIG GUN!!?? That would explain, some part, at least who or what is Hope and R2D2 and the metallic hand in the first trailer

That is fantastic, better than the trailer that came out the other week, I think my favourite moment was Chewie detonating the explosives.

It was ok. I was just comparing to the previous trailer’s music. I know the movie soundtrack will be very well done.

Agreed – not my favorite. To clarify, I liked the music well enough, but I felt it was not matched well with the scenes. I like this footage better than the previous trailer, but thought the previous trailer did a MUCH better job with the music.

Strangely, I think the music from the other trailer still makes it #1 for me. Music with Star Wars is just that big of a deal (to me). Loved both though, and am very excited for the movie!

I agree some of the shot are amazing but the Rey Finn name exchange is so wooden and when she’s talking to BB8 they have used clips from 3 different exchanges and edited them together and it just sounds wrong…also the firesaber (TM by me ) accross Reys face …the effects don’t match up to what we have seen in the other trailer…just my opinion dude

        • November 6, 2015 at 4:47 pm

That’s true, but the editing of voice clips has been going on through all trailers, at least this one paints a coherent picture.

re: the lightsaber, it’s the heat haze that makes it look warbled, I think it looks much better when I drop my pants in IMAX.

Ha ha ok. Well its your opinion. You do realize that the dialogue is going to be awkward in a trailer because your only getting bits and pieces of a conversation? You have seen other movie trailers before right?

          • November 6, 2015 at 5:05 pm
            Permalink

Yes obviously thousands and that particular bit is not very well done IMHO…anyway it’s just nitpicking. Still a very good trailer just did not blow me away like all the others did..maybe the music wasn’t rousing enough

Regarding the dialogue editing, I think they weren’t as careful because the intended audience is Japan, where most people would rely on subtitles. FWIW, I thought the most awkward edit was “The force…it’s true…all of it.”

I agree with Adavanter Mki, this is about the time if you want no spoilers to stop going to Star Wars fan pages and articles about the movie. Finn’s interview was pretty telling yesterday to. I think they have phases of NDA in which they can drop more subtle hints as time goes but certain things that can’t be disclosed. I still like the other Official trailer, but this one does tip some stuff off. The Kylo Rey part is clearly a shocker to most. Kylo must spare her for some reason. He goes soft on her, not sure how immune he is to the light side as some propose.

What kind of jerk family would leave their daughter alone on some seedy, desolate junkyard desert planet?

This is why I question whether she is even related to Luke or Leia.

      • November 6, 2015 at 4:17 pm
        Permalink

Here’s my theory: she is Kylo Ren’s (younger?) sister. Shortly after Kylo turns to the dark side and gains power, Han and Leia put her into the care of someone they trust on Jakku (probably played by von Sydow) so that she is out of harm’s way and and/or doesn’t turn like Kylo did (or some other reason, who knows). I think she knows who her parents are as she was probably only there for the last 5 or so years. She just hasn’t had any contact with them because of the danger that would pose to her. How that all fits in to the rest of the story? No idea. That’s my theory any way.

          Second your theory.

          • November 6, 2015 at 4:54 pm
            Permalink

I used to think this to, but with this trailer why is she waiting for her family then if she ran from them?

          • November 6, 2015 at 8:26 pm
            Permalink

She could be waiting for them to reconcile. Assuming a wedge has been driven between Han and Leia, maybe due to the darkness of Kylo Ren. Or, Rey could have regretted running away from home, is now stranded on Jakku, and is awaiting her family to find her. The fact she states “family” in the trailer implies to me that she has more than a father (the Luke theory) waiting for her. Also, the Falcon being on Jakku is too much of a coincindence. Leia is on planet X, Han is maybe on a different planet than Leia (not Jakku), and Rey just happens to be stuck on the same planet as the Falcon (what’s the chances?). Believe the Falcon was used to get from her home planet to Jakku, and then there it was taken away from her, leaving her stranded all alone. From the BTS video we know Rey gets behind the controls of the Falcon. She also knows the layout of the super star destroyer on Jakku, an educated guess is that she is one flying the Falcon inside it.

Maybe the Max Von Sydow character knows her family, and has sent word back to them, resulting in Han and Chewie ending up on Jakku.

        • November 6, 2015 at 4:20 pm
          Permalink

Not really. Luke was left in the care of two adoptive parents, given food and a decent household while Obi Wan watched from nearby. Rey lives completely alone in a junked AT-AT and has to fend completely for herself.

Von Sydow is watching and sends a distress call to Han (Rey’s Daddy) and Chewie who come to the rescue on Jakku.

It is possible she was sent off in an escape pod or something to be spared during the Battle of Jakku. Much like R2D2 and C3P0. Maybe the last words from her parents were we’ll be back for you, this is for your own good. Perhaps Kylo wasn’t lucky enough to be spared as Rey was. Kylo was then trained in the dark side.

She is definitely not old enough to have been at the Battle of Jakku, even as a baby.

How old is she? We know the Battle of Jakku was 29 years ago but do we know when it ended? We really don’t know enough to really make a real determination. But reasoning for my post has more to do with why she may have been abandoned, it was likely more for her safety and being hidden from the Empire/First Order.

Well seeing as hoe Daisy Ridley is 23 years old, I suspect they won’t make her 29. But even if they did, the question becomes why was the baby at the battle in the first place? It just doesn’t make sense.

That definitely sounds like new John Williams music to me. I actually like our domestic trailer better (it’s for a Western audience, so that makes sense), but this one was great, too. You can definitely tell it was made for a completely different audience though.

Williams does a lot better. They have other composers handle the trailer music while Williams finishes the film score. The Trailer 3 music was done by composers who specialize in trailer scoring.

It’s definitely at least in his style (as opposed to the domestic trailer). I’m 75% confident that they took stuff from his score and edited it to fit the trailer.

I’m from Western Europe and i really don’t understand your point. I prefer the insinutations like the third tráiler gave to us, not showing too much. What all trailers should look like. This new tráiler it’s briiliant but for me shows more predictable points (but still not too much). I would prefer not to listen the “family part” for exemple.

Asian cultures are different from Western cultures. Plus, Star Wars is not as entrenched in their cultural fabric as it is here. They need an extra incentive.

Explosions alone won’t sell a film there. They need to know what it is about.

But overall, trailers for the Asian market are always a bit different. Take Ratatouille. The Western trailers were more comedic. The Asian ones were dramatic and more story-driven.

I didnt like Finn, Po, Snoke or Phasma at first; now I love those names. Thought the cross hilt light-saber was a gimmick, now I really like it. What a great experience this last year has been! “I will fulfill our destiny, I will finish what you started” Most people are going to take that as confirming that Kylo IS Vader’s grandson….Although I really think he is…for some reason I am not buying the fact that these line’s are being spoken to Vader…I think he is talking to Snoke/plagueis. and putting Vader’s helmet there is to throw people off.

If Snoke really is Plagueis, and this is who Kylo is really talking to, Then maybe showing Vader’s helmet is referenceing what Snoke “started”. Since Plagueis is the one who created Anakin with the dark side of the force. Maybe Kylo is referring to finishing the plans Plagueis had for the Skywalker bloodline that he created, and fulfilling the destiny that Plagueis had planned out. Just a theory, but MAN that would be awesome!

I just think JJ Abrams is going to ignore the prequel trilogy, and these next 3 films are going to exist as a continuation of the original trilogy. You can watch these next 3 without having ever seen the PT. Just my impression. Therefore, I don’t think there will be any reference to “Plagueis” or “Sith”.

          • November 6, 2015 at 5:47 pm
            Permalink

JJ is definitely not ignoring the prequel. Not sure why people think this. They did say they are moving away from midichlorians, Not mentioning it isn’t the same as abolishing it. As much as it must be painful for you to hear. Episode I, II, and III are definitely canon. Plagueis does exist in Star Wars canon. His backstory e.g. the Darth Plagueis novel is not canon. Further backing the idea that Snoke, not Hego Damask could indeed be Darth Plagueis. Plagueis also won’t necessarily be Muun. But would be a great boost to the credibility of the power of the dark side of the force in The Force Awakens.

JJ doesn’t just have free rein to do whatever he wants. Also, Disney isn’t ready to simply write off those films. A recent poll of Star Wars fans found that Obi Wan is the most popular character. This is mostly due to the prequel trilogy and the Clone Wars show.

That was my thought as well. Just because they play that audio over the image of Vader’s helmet, means nothing. I’m not certain he’s even talking about Vader at all. There’s no conformation of anything, really.

All the analysis seemed to be on “what did he mean by ‘what you (Vader) started’?” What seems to get missed is, Kylo Ren, they’ve said, does not see himself as a bad guy. If he is, in fact, talking about Vader, he could easily have what he thinks is a noble mission.

The end scene with Rey over the body– I’m guessing that’s “force ghost” Luke appearing to her, telling her to come and train with him. Presumably, Luke’s learned to project himself “force ghost” style despite being still alive. The light blue glow on Rey’s face, the leaked shots of Hamill/Luke in what looked like publicity photos were probably for CG. It also explains why Luke hasn’t been in the trailer: it would give too much away, and why everything surrounding his character in TFA is so secretive. Thoughts anyone?

I think Rey’s understanding of who her family is is much like Luke’s in A New Hope. He had been told things about his father, but it was merely “what his uncle told him.” I believe the scope of the film will be Rey learning who the Skywalkers really are, learning about the force, learning about her brother or cousin Kylo Ren (still haven’t decided which they are), learning about her father or uncle Luke and what he did, and her character arch will be accepting her role as a Skywalker and force sensitive.

As immune to the light side as Kylo might be, he sure seems to have a soft spot for Rey. And sounds like he’s nearly in tears talking to Darth Vader’s helmet as if he lost the battle and wants to extract revenge.

Exactly, if she’s still alive, we don’t exactly know the true chronology of the trailer compared to the film. But if Kylo let her go there is a soft spot for her. Kylo sounds upset when talking to Vader helmet, whether or not the sound clip is from talking to the helmet or not, the tone in his voice sounds like he may not have succeeded in his plans in Episode VII and will avenge Darth Vader in Episode VIII. This time he likely won’t spare Rey.

In regards to the shot from both trailers with Rey over the body, while I believe that Rey is Luke’s daughter, IF she is in fact Han and Leia’s daughter, then the body could be Han’s. It could play out like this: She for some reason has been stranded on Jakku, possibly for her protection. She meets Han and they bond before revealing that he is her father. She has been waiting for her family her whole life, finally meets her father, and everything is great, then she finds out she has a brother, Kylo Ren, and he resents his father for some reason and they fight and Han sacrifices himself to save them all. That would be a pretty strong arch for justifying her crying over his body.

Yeah, gonna set a new bar. It does look different, but not in a bad way. Feels a lot like Empire Strikes Back with a lot of colour and light being used (think orange glow in the carbon chamber, all the blues and oranges as Luke fought Vader. Has a nice realism to most of it, not the plasticy smudgey cgi look of too many films these days.

JJ does move the camera around. A LOT. Almost too much. There’s no need for that quick move into Chewie’s hand as he hits the button, that felt kinda cheesy, but of course we’ve only seen the shot in isolation. Going to look amazing, and feature a pretty strong story and a great cast of characters. All the effects work looks sublime and so realistic… definitely going to be a great film and a great Star Wars film.

also, just because 2 shots in a trailer appear to follow each other doesn’t mean they really will in the film. It may play out a little differently.

No, the camera moves slowly in pretty much every shot, except maybe the Knights of Ren shot, the one with the Millenium Falcon from the second teaser and just a little bit here and there, but certainly not like in JJ’s Star Trek movies.

It’s neat to see how JJ is referencing certain classic movies with one of these shots. In an earlier trailer, a shot of Finn and Rey running from the explosion has a TIE fighter over their shoulder like in North By Northwest, and now you have a TIE fighter shot very reminiscent of Apocalypse Now. So cool.

I just don’t understand how Rey can be the hero of this.

Nothing wrong with Finn, I just prefer Rey. Kathleen Kennedy said that the new trilogy is going to continue the story of the Skywalker legacy. Which is a smart move. Anything else would directly contradict the overall intentions of Lucas for the different trilogies in far too major of a way. Finn can be a great new character, but I doubt he is a Skywalker. If Rey is not a Skywalker in some form, I admit that I will be disappointed.

Well, I have not seen the film. I can’t say it’s dumb. Many times a great actor having a small but poignant part elevates a film.

It seems to me Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren are the main characters and that Han Solo also has a good part. Perhaps bigger than Poe.

Poe could also be a character that has more of a presence in later episodes.

This “trailer” was indeed centered around Rey. I believe we’ll get more Finn spots later though.

Talking about Rey, it looks like the theory that she somehow got abandoned/stranded on Jakku at a very early age might be correct after all. She’s still “waiting for her family” after all those years, but does she know who her family is ? And, even more significant than that, does her family know she is still alive ?

There’s a lot about Rey that is not being spoiled in the trailers. Her being able to hold her own in a duel with Kylo is not the “dumbest thing ever”. Why do you think they made the character proficient with a weapon(such as a Bo staff) that requires a pretty high level of acrobatic ability to use effectively? Also, just because Finn is bested by Kylo in a duel and Rey is not, that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s able to defeat Kylo. Without going into any spoilers, perhaps something happens during the duel that prevents either of them from defeating the other.

Finn comes off as the Han, while she is the Luke.

She also seems to be a Skywalker and the saga films are about the Skywalkers. Even if it’s a “chick”.

My guess is NEITHER of them can hold their own against kylo. Both Rey and Finn seem to have some martial arts training based on their background, but I think Kylo has the power to crush both of them. I bet Finn will hold them off long enough for Rey to realize her destiny and help, then rey will have a “Use the Force” moment where the force guides her to JUST BARELY fight Kylo Ren to a draw so they can escape. If Finn is a Jedi then he is a noobie since he has been a trooper most of his life. Rey at least may have had some force training before/while in exile on Jakku

So I am more baffled than ever. I do NOT read spoilers (why would you want to know what happens before you see it?) and this trailer kind of threw me off. Very mellow, almost investigative. I read somewhere that the toys released so far only represent the first 1/3 of the movie. Wondering if the trailers are the same thing. Only showing us scenes of Jakku and occasionally that frozen planet. Also, did the lightsaber scene with Rey give you the feeling they know each other? Her and Kylo? I know some are saying they are both kids of Luke or Han and Leia or something like that. Something about that scene, really felt like that. It didn’t look threatening like he wanted to hurt her, but like her wanted her attention.

Also now wondering if maybe she is the force sensitive and not Finn. Like Finn uses the saber just to protect her at some point but she has the power and Kylo is trying to pull her in like Vader and the Emperor did to Luke. I don’t know. Damn, this last 5 weeks are gonna take forever.

Pretty sure Kylo is going to kill Finn and leave, then Luke shows up and talks to Rey, then she goes and trains with him Dagobah style. I’m betting that’s the last 15m of TFA and the first 15m of ep8.

Would be a bit of a shame though; Finn seems cool and I’m hoping they don’t just plow through characters per-film like the prequels. I’d rather see the same characters on a journey through 3 films, like the originals.

Well Finn won’t be able to do much, if he has the Force he wouldn’t have much control over it without training. My guess is that battle we see in the frozen forest will have Finn protecting Rei and then he either gets cut down or hurt, and suddenly we see a green saber and it is Luke stopping Kylo from killing Finn.

I have thought since really early in production that Luke was missing because he had to embrace the dark side to beat Vader. While he rejected the Emperor, he still needed the strength to beat Vader. And now he doesn’t want to infect Leia or let negative actions overtake his sensibilities. After all, Yoda said “forever will it dominate your destiny.”

She most certainly participated in many battles as a flag-bearer, though being a pacifist you’d be correct in that she never killed anyone personally. I don’t think that would preclude her from being a person of great strength however.

Ok, I’m going to take a wild ass guess at the plot setup based on this latest trailer. Everything here is pure speculation – no inside info or spoilers. Poe Dameron finds Anakin & Luke’s lightsaber. He “calls it in” to the Rebel high command (Leia). His transmission is intercepted by Kylo Ren (who collects Force artifacts). Kylo Ren arrives on scene and captures Poe, but not before he jettisons BB-8 to Jakku along with the light saber and gets a message to Rebel high command, which dispatches Han Solo and Chewbacca to Jakku. Kylo Ren interrogates Poe using creepy Force Powers. Poe gives up the location of BB-8 and the light saber. First Order forces are dispatched to Jakku and they reek havoc as they search for BB-8. Meanwhile, Han Solo arrives in time to rescue Rey, Finn, BB-8 and the light saber. I’m going to guess that Rey is Luke Skywalker’s child and Han & Leia Solo’s niece, left on Jakku before Luke went into seclusion and that her staff is also some kind of Force artifact. Why hide her? Perhaps Luke did this to hide her from Kylo Ren, Supreme Leader Snoke, or maybe even himself (in the latter case, she was left there by Han & Leia). I think Kylo Ren is Han and Leia’s child and Luke’s nephew. Adam Driver (Kylo) is about 10 years older than Daisy Ridley (Rey), so I further speculate the Kylo Ren was Luke’s apprentice before something went awry with his training. Luke may have stopped Kylo’s training for his life of seclusion or perhaps Kylo turned to the dark side during his training. Rey was very young when left on Jakku by Luke (or Han & Leia) and that’s why she doesn’t totally buy the stories about the Force. Who raised Rey you ask? I’m going to guess that she has been Max Von Sydow’s ward during her time on Jakku. Han and Leia knew she was on Jakku in the care of Max Von Sydow, but they left her there for her own protection. Unfortunately, Max doesn’t make it through that storm trooper assault on the village. If this sounds a lot like the plot set up for A New Hope – I do not think that is coincidence or lazy writing. After rereading my theory, I’m pretty sure that Han & Leia left Rey in the care of Max Von Sydow after something went awry with Kylo Ren’s training under Luke. Maybe they feared it was Luke going over to the dark side. One more theory – Max Von Sydow will turn out to be Han Solo’s old man and Rey’s paternal grandfather. Think about the parallel’s to Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade. That could be 100% pure WIN and AWESOME!

    • November 6, 2015 at 8:03 pm
      Permalink

Good guess, but I don’t think Han/Leia, Luke or anyone in her “family” would have letf Rey to wander around as a scavenger on the Jakku desert. I may be totally wrong, but her “waiting for my family” line suggests to me that she got lost on Jakku as a child (maybe on a shipwreck ?) and had pretty much to grow up on her own (maybe with Max Von Sydow’s as a less-than-ideal father figure). She seems worse off than Luke, who at least had a proper home with his uncle and aunt, or Anakin, who was a slave, but had his mother nonetheless. I also strongly suspect that, whoever her family is, they assume she is not alive and has not been alive for a long time.

      • November 6, 2015 at 8:09 pm
        Permalink

Ok mabruno, I’m going to build on your theory. I still maintain that Rey is Luke’s daughter, BUT she is unaware of her lineage (as was Luke) and Max Von Sydow told her she was shipwrecked or abandoned. Max Von Sydow is still grandpaw Solo, but he keeps that secret and lives the life of an anonymous junk collector (like “old Ben” Kenobi) while also spinning tall tales about the Force, so that Rey will be ready to take up the family business one day. The more I think about this, the more I am sure that Han & Leia are hiding her from Luke. The question is, WHY? I don’t think Abrams and Disney would take the risk of Luke going full blown Sith Lord and cheesing off the fan base. Maybe because when Luke trained their child (Kylo Ren), he broke bad. HAVE I BLOWN YOUR MIND YET?

        • November 6, 2015 at 8:25 pm
          Permalink

OH SNAP, what if Max Von Sydow is not grandpaw Solo, but instead CANAN from STAR WARS REBELS?! At first, I thought, maybe he’s one of the Lost Jedi from the aftermath of the Cone Wars, but actually Canan (about 35 when Luke was 18 or so in ANH) would be about the right age and they are just similar enough in physical appearance for it to work.

Kanan! you might have something there. maybe luke freaks out after kylo’s training goes south and he hides his daughter rey and puts her in the care of max von sydows character who might be kanan. luke is at a secluded sith temple that he’s been guarding for the last 15+ years. he’s guarding it from snoke, kylo and the knights of ren.

HEY!!! We’ve got a synopsis for TFA in Russia! Here’s my translation:

Thirty years after the death of Darth Vader and the Emperor the galaxy is still in danger. The government (public education?) “First Order” led by their mysterious supreme leader Snoke and his right hand Kylo Ren following in the footsteps of the Empire, trying to grab all the power. At this time, not an easy fate brings young girl Rey and former First Order stormtrooper Finn with the heroes of the war with the Empire – Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Queen Leia. Together, they have to fight the New Order, but comes the moment when it becomes apparent that only a Jedi could stop Snoke and Kylo Ren. And there is only one of them in the galaxy alive…

Are you going to deny that America (and Western civilization in general) are a different culture when compared to Japan (and the Eastern civilization in general)?

Just for starters, Star Wars is not ingrained as part of the Pop culture fabric in Asia as it is in America. Overseas movie-going wasn’t as big three decades ago as it is today. People are not as intimate and familiar with Star Wars there as we are here. Hence, we just need imagery to rekindle all our nostalgic feeling of a franchise we already love. They actually need to know what this film is about to be interested.

Go watch an AK48 music video and then tell me if that would work in America.

Different cultures have different parameters and tastes. Smart Marketing adapts. Watch Ratatouille American and Japanese trailers. It’s like they are selling different films.

I wasn’t implying that your statement had any relation to my following statememt. My apologies.

As for the cultural differences, yes, there are, though my point was that the Japanese [or any other culture for that matter ] would have any say so about plot details from the film makers who have been very reluctant to reveal those details, regardless of culture.

That is not what I meant. What I meant is that a trailer to effective there, where not everyone is familiar with Star Wars, needs to give a basic framework of the plot, so people can be interested in watching that story.

The America trailer relied heavily on nostalgia and didn’t really clarify what the story was about. That works here, because Star Wars is familiar to us on a deep level. It wouldn’t work there.

But these are universal themes, my friend.

To say they tailored the previous trailers to Ammericans because they knew about Star Wars already betrays that fact. It also betrays the fact that Star Wars is a global phenomenon.

            Universality is universality.

Star Wars is not that universal as you think. The movies were released in China only this year, for instance! Overseas movie-going wasn’t as big three decades ago as it is today. They are not so intimately familiar with it as we are. I don’t even remember a time in my life when I did not know Star Wars! I am not sure people in Japan feel the same.

That is like saying they could release a Kamen Rider film in America and not show anything of the plot in the trailer. In Japan, they’d all know who Kamen Rider is. Not in the USA. Hence, they’d use different trailers. They’d need to show us the basic framework of the plot.

Also, tastes vary. This more subdued, slower trailer is more according to the Eastern film taste, compared with the more frantic American trailer. For instance, animation. Western trailer focus more on the comedy. The Asia-specific trailers that Disney / Pixar release focus more on the story and drama.

It’s smart of them to tailor their marketing to the audience.

I disagree. I think it’s pretty different having had the films be part of your culture for almost forty years and being available for four months (China). And, even if it were, what appeals to different countries varies. Like Americans have no problem with violence but are very uptight about nudity. Or the French having no problem with nudity, but being sensitive about violence.

I’m sure Lucasfilm and Disney know what they are doing. Disney/Pixar have cut exclusive trailers for the Asian market for years and their results are outstanding.

My money is on them knowing what they are doing.

Kai is making some really good points. Having different cultural views on things is not racist it’s just how it is. Star Wars is as universal as it gets and certain elements are still seen in very different ways. I’m from Germany and I know a lot of people here (even the Star Wars fans) disagree with how ok it is to kill people (even the bad guys) in the films. It’s maybe not the very best example but it’s the one coming to head right now. So, sorry if you think that’s racist but the reason we see and hear so much BB-8 in this trailer is because he’s a cute beeping robot and this is a trailer for Japan…

But regardless of how the trailers portray the film to differing cultures, there is only one film!

The Germans I saw reacting to the trailers seemed to be pretty excited to me.
And likewise, why do the American’s think this new Japanese trailer is so awesome? Shouldn’t they feel different about them since they’re apparently tailored to another culture?

Americans in general didn’t see the Japanese trailer. Just hardcore fans that follow Star Wars news pretty much daily.

I’m sorry. You never convince me all cultures are the same and react the same to advertisement, Which is what a trailer is. Specially when Disney has always cut very different trailers for Asia.

Kai, I understand the concept of having different trailers for different cultures. I’m not denying that. Happens all the time, under normal circumstances. Again, my point is that a movie as secretive as this would reveal more of the plot to a certain culture is novel.

Did you notice the opening image of the 2nd SWFA trailer for Korea? It began with a sweeping shot of a vast totalitarian military parade and speech of the First Order (with hundreds of troops lined-up), and it seemed to bring to mind something from North Korea which South Koreans may react to with more familiarity. The shot was not used in the 2nd North American trailer. Very selective of Disney.

    Official synopsis from Disney:

“The first chapter of a new Star Wars trilogy. This is the story of Rey, a lonesome heroine who is waiting for her family; with the power of the Force, she begins a new tale of “family love and loss”. Antagonizing her is Kylo Ren, a villain who manipulates a cross-shaped light saber. A new legend begins here!”

This trailer seems to hint even stronger that Rey is a Skywalker.

As I said, the character posters released yesterday made me think “family” (Rey, Han, Kylo and Leia). And now this Japanese trailer starts with that theme, too, emphasizing it throughout:

    Maz: Who are you?

Rey (with hesitation or resignation?): I’m no one.

Rey or Maz (?): Where do you come from?

Maz: I know all about waiting. (merged clip) For my family…

Then the next three characters shown: Finn, Phasma… and that dramatic shot of Kylo.

Kylo: I will fulfill our destiny.

He says “our”. Is he referring to the Knights of Ren, or him and one other person (sister?)?

Shot of Rey crying with Maz’s voice-over: Hope is not lost today. It is found.

Rey is an ex Knight of Ren, who abandoned KOR briefly before 2nd Jedi Purge thing? That would explain her combat skills and Kylo’s “How come you’re just a scavenger” and fulfill OUR destinies quote

She knows little about the force or the history of the Galactic Civil War and the Old Republic. There is no way she’s ever been a Jedi or a KOR. Most likely, she went missing on Jakku as a child and her family simply assumed she didn’t survive. It’s the most probable explanation.

Her natural fighting skills come of course from her connection to the force (albeit unknown to her at first) and her experiejnce having to survive on her own in the hostile Jakku environment.

In the original trilogy Luke was the ‘new hope’. We see Rey looking up at something/one as the line is spoken. Is it the return of Luke at a key moment?? Or am I reading too much into this?

No, I don’t think you/we are reading too much into this at all. I am feeling very sure that Lucasfilm is carefully doling out clues. “Family” is emphasized in this trailer.

The strongest conclusion: Rey is a Skywalker. Her mom is Leia. Kylo is her brother and son of Leia. (Rey and Kylo could have different fathers.) Kylo will reveal himself to his family, and ask his sister to join him to fulfill their grandfather’s destiny. (His reveal, unmasking himself to Rey could be this movie’s “Luke, I am your father” moment.) Those character posters released together are like a family photo album.

On the point that Rey cannot be a Skywalker unless she is Luke’s daughter, allow me to make a few comments based on real-world facts.

King Willem Alexander of the Netherlands calls himself Orange-Nassau like his mother, (former) Queen Beatrix, and not Amsberg like his late father, Prince Claus. Likewise, Prince Charles (the Prince of Wales) uses the name Windsor inherited from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and not the name of his father (Mountbatten). Incidentally, both Prince Philip and Queen Beatrix also took their names from their respectivmothers as Prince Philip’s patrilineal name should actually be Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, rather than Mountbatten (Battenberg), and Queen Beatrix’s patrilineal name should be Lippe-Biesterfeld, rather than Orange-Nassau. As another example, Princess Estelle of Sweden, rather than adopting her father’s name (Westling), uses instead the dynastic name Bernadotte from her mother, Crown Princess Victoria, and from her grandfather, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

In other words, it has become increasingly common among European royal houses to no longer change their family names patrilineally as it used to be the case in the past. Since TFA has been written from a 21st century feminist point of view and the Skywalkers are a kind of “royalty” of the force world, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Leia’s children were considered Skywalkers as opposed to Solos or whatever their father’s family name is.

I just don’t see Luke being a father. It would be unnatural for a Jedi master. Kylo and Rey would fit perfectly however as Leia’s kids.

Japan is a much more subdued and reflective culture, and this trailer reflects that. I am glad that most of the movie doesn’t appear to be mindless AOTC action. (I liked 1 and 3, hated part 2). It looks like a deep story with a lot to digest.

I admit it might not be just racism, but like with President Obama, who many hated before he stepped foot in the Oval Office, if you don’t have a valid reason to despise someone of another race, it will look like racism. I hear the complaints of it being “too PC.” Yet Han, Leia, Luke, Chewie, Rey, Snope, Phasma, and Hux(?) are all white. Just odd. It’s a damn movie and one many of us have loved. You know what? Even with our horrible President I still appreciate my country. One of the reasons I dislike a Chief Executive who apologizes for it all the time. No, but I worry about anyone who goes to church period, though Obama seems far too smart to “actually” believe any of it, it is for show, like Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Nixon, etc. He has a tiny connection to Bill Ayers, from when he first started. Good luck finding successful politicians with no connections you won’t like. But hey, keep hating him for being just like the rest.

How dare the President show concern about civilians and police shooting and killing (and instigating it) unarmed people of his race. Yeah, the President should just say, “that n***** got what he deserved.” I am extremely well versed in politics. Instead of telling me to do research, maybe you should read your own post, not as a anti-Obama zealot but just from a neutral point of view. I think you will see how this falls into “Obama derangement syndrome.” My dream is for people to actually judge people on the content of their character, but like Obama, and John Boyega, that often seems to be nothing but an afterthought.

That said, I hope you enjoy the movie too.

I do not doubt Obama’s credentials, my point is that Obama’s race is NOT why I dislike him.
Carson’s lack of credentials is a weak point and is the main reason why I’m on the fence about him being elected – though he, as a man, I have a tremendous amount of respect for, and this goes beyond his race. If you sent me an unlabeled transcript of one of Obama’s speeches and one of Carson’s speeches, the outcome would be the same [for me]: Carson is way more trustworthy and grounded of an individual.
I didn’t realize Barack was an actual professor, but the main point about race not being the key factor here [for SANE republicans that is, I will not attempt to defend Trump supporters, most republicans think the man is insane].
Though there ARE OTHER CANDIDATES. Fiorina and Cruz are, I think, better all-around candidates and better prepared for office, though Carson is a rock-solid individual with NO regard for public opinion – which unfortunately, means he’s setting himself up to be the next George Bush, which is why I’m doubtful that he’s the right man for THIS job.
I think the thing about Carson that’s resounding with people is that he doesn’t come across as being groomed from birth to be president. Obama is “groomed from birth” – central.

My entire point is that people hate Obama and few have any reason to do so. Do i dislike Reagan for his irresponsible fiscal and monetary policy, his giving weapons to our enemies and lying? Yes, but I don’t hate him. Do I dislike Bush #1 for declaring war on a tyrant his group armed to the teeth? Yes, but I don’t hate him. Do I dislike Clinton for being swarmy and lewd and for allowing horrible banking and other deregulation to get a few Democrat bills passed? Yes but I don’t hate him.

Now with Bush #2, yes, I hate him. I hate his weakness in letting others run his administration. I hate him for being willing to use evidence they knew was faulty to engage in a revenge war. I hate him for not using the 9/11 attacks to push for unity and national pride, but instead as a pretense to take away liberties, let his cabal start a revenge war, and pour money into connected corporations. I hate him for not caring about FEMA botching Katrina. I hate him for not taking his position seriously, I hate him for making irresponsible speeches, decisions and provocations that endangered our citizens. I hate him for intentionally letting Enron go hog wild with no regulation, and not doing a damn thing for all those citizens wiped out due to his crony capitalism. And most of all I hate him for sending so many soldiers to war without caring what happened to them.

So when it comes to Obama and people viscerally hate him, yet he has done very little for people to hate him. It seems like it is all backlash hate because of how much our country came to despise Bush #2. Be honest, the hatred of Obama occurred before his first day in office, and that is just embarrassing for our country. At least with Bush, there were MANY reason.

Completely disagree. Sorry. Many people HATE him. And for absolutely sane and legitimate reasons, reasons I knew long before he took office. Unfortunately, most people DID just see the color of his skin and vote for him, which is why we are in this mess. I urge you to watch some videos on who reared him, along with who his friends were during college and which church he attended. All, are decidedly Anti-American. How about you listen to his wife saying she is “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country” and let me know what you think. Anyway, it’s just sad we can’t talk about what we all love, Star Wars. Instead it’s boiling down to the PC police trolls watching for a about how someone doesn’t like Finn or Rey and they jump on the person for being “racist” or “sexist”. They don’t have any clear facts (which libs generally don’t), just name call and hope it sticks and the person gives up. So. Let’s talk Star Wars!

As opposed to the grumpy old guy who sold off his maverick base and then nominated winky dink to a heartbeat of the office. Talk about anti American.

But you’re right. Let’s just focus on Star Wars. So what is driving this hatred or Finn’s character? Considering we have seen maybe a minute of screen time of him and heard three of his lines. Would love to hear.

I think the issue is that people associate “Communist” with “Tyrant” because that’s the way it works out in China and Russia – not to mention the North Korean issue.
For all the Communistic talk in China, the fact stands that the nation is one big industry monopoly, which correct me if I’m wrong, is not communism.
So there’s actual socialist behavior, something religious institutes invented millennia ago – and there’s tyranny labelled as “communism” because “take all your stuff for the rich 1%” sounds too ugly.

Obama hasn’t exactly been “on hand” as President, that and the fact that he’s not actually the one in charge, and things are looking awful similar to how “communism” in China “worked out”.
We’re not calling him socialist, really, we’re calling him a lazy tyrant. There’s a difference.

          • November 7, 2015 at 9:41 pm
            Permalink

People don’t associate Communist with Tyrant, they associate it with the fear from the Cold War where we were taught to think all Russians were evil hateful people. But like any country you go to, from Iran, to China, to Estonia, to Sudan, to Turkey, to Peru, people are the same. They want a home, an income and a safe place to raise their kids. Simple as that. I have always contended that if before a battle took place the soldiers sat and ate together and spoke of themselves, after the meal, most would refuse to fight.

China was Communist, which basically means the State owns everything, the people have a right to only what the government says they do, and production of goods are very tightly controlled. It is a weird perversion of Marxism, almost to the point it is unrecognizable. But they took their lead from the USSR who would have been a very different country had Lenin not died shortly after the Bolshevik revolution and Stalin (whom Lenin detested for his tyrannical leanings) took over. But the perversions did do what you said, in taking all the money and gave it to the 1%. Much like how our economy has gone from socio-capitalistic to a completely unseen before style of socialized risk, privatized gains and near total lack of financial and monetary regulation. We don’t have a name for that.

I am not sure what you mean about “we” aren’t calling him a Socialist. That’s odd, I hear that all the time. Or used to, getting harder now that he is 6 years in and hasn’t governed as a Socialist, nor a Communist, nor a Muslim. Look how crazy your last two paragraphs are. He isn’t “on hand”, he’s “not actually the one in charge”. yet he is a lazy tyrant. So either you don’t know what these words mean or aren’t being very careful with your words.

We are not looking more like China, China is looking more and more like us. Decisions governed by corporate power which now controls the means of production over the State. The one major difference is China owns many of those corporations, and in the US, the corporations are owned by their boards, often which contain many political leaders.

          • November 8, 2015 at 1:13 pm
            Permalink

The Chinese government controls the corporations – on paper, but the figures do not take into account bribery, which bribery pretty much an accepted part of business in China. Bribe the government or get run out of business. Period. I’ve seen this happen on multiple occasions.
If you’re doing business, the government wants a bribe and control.
But this also means that a lot of illegal activity gets turned a blind eye because the bribe effectively protects you from the law – unless a foreigner notices and makes a hubbub, then the government just acts surprised and throws a few low-scale scapegoats in jail and calls it a day.

The thing about the states is that corporations are usually non-government, WHICH MEANS they are subject to legitimate law.
As soon as the government owns it, it’s beyond outside scrutiny.

That’s why i say Obama is taking the country towards Chinese sensibilities [I’ll give him an out on Obamacare, that was Romney’s idea all along], because Obama, and the Dems in general sum up every problem to “government controlled-program = problem solved”, which in a perfect world is awesome, but in the REAL world, with corruptible people, has a 99% chance of reverting to tyranny – disorganized tyranny.

When people are trusted with their OWN companies and their OWN land and their OWN property, then the law has much freer reign because the law-enforcers don’t have to worry about arresting their own boss, which means the law can actually function.

Outlay’s first paragraph made a point that I hadn’t thought of before. That is a general undercurrent in society today, as an overeaction to past misstreatment of black (insert colour) people. You could say its related to the man = bad woman = good undercurrent.
It would be an overstatement to qualify the movie as racist propaganda.
The problem I have with banning such things is that if it criticised the movie as beeing anti-black there would be no move to ban it. You can’t have it both ways – or shouldn’t. That type of totalitarianism that is another undercurrent today is not a good thing.
Its just an opinion. If you don’t like that type of opinion, either have a coherent argument against it or don’t bother fanning the flames by replying.

          • November 7, 2015 at 8:38 am

It’s based on false assumptions and it’s exactly these (false) thoughts that incite racism. As someone who’s existence is based purely on chance that my grandfather (non-jewish white resistance fighter) survived WWII with just a busted knee, I’m interested in both sides of the story, and I find that both sides have arguments that would have herd-like people rally for them.

But again, it’s these messed up assumptions (the empire/FO is “white) that make an out-of-place classification turn into blatant racism.

I just think that “stupid” people shouldn’t influence these boards. If you know nothing about racism, better school up on the past few hundred years of human history and realize that both racism is everywhere, it’s not just the “whites” that have racism, it’s every foreign body in a “neutral” (from their PoV) environment.

The whole “empire” is largely made out of “racists” as they tend to keep a mostly “human” shape on the outside, but it’s a freaking galaxy full of aliens, and the main bad guys in the OT are played by a white guy and voiced by a black guy. If you think Star Wars has promoting a supremacist message, you’re wrong. If you think it’s about overturning the wrong (racism, seclusionism) then yeah, that’s the right thing to do, even though behind the scenes, it’s not as black and white as you think.

Mind you, if you’re born in the western world and think that only white people are racist, by all means, I do invite you to the part of the world where I live and will show you that racism, nationalism run rampant all over the world. And it’s NOT a good thing.

Can’t really disagree with anything you said.
But I find it odd, if you’re addressing me, that you imply I view it as promoting racist supremacy, when I cleary stated I don’t think it does. To me the poster just highlighted a point of view I hadn’t thought of before.

On the racist thing. I heard a review from someone who hadn’t seen Star Wars untill this year, and one of his first comments was “wow that was very white”. To make such a comment is to imply it shouldn’t be. To me that’s as racist as oposing the inclusion of any race. But that’s considered okay and even funny. There still are claims that the first movies are racist because of that result. Also the old one of the portrayal of Darth Vader being racist because he’s the villain and black. All that sort of stupid thinking seems to come from the loony-left of Feminism that’s setting trends today. That’s the sort of thing that makes stupid white people come to stupid conclusions, because they feel they are under perpetual attack.

Anyway, the banned poster wasn’t going to have much luck promoting a hash-tag boycot Star Wars at a SW fan site – to put a different spin on the saying ‘preaching to the converted’.

Finn represents every one of us that wants to STOP being EVIL.

In this view, your assessment is correct – Kylo represents white supremacy and I am fully in support of John Boyega’s existence in the Star Wars franchise – and I hope Finn kicks the shit out of Kylo at some point in the franchise.
You don’t need medication, you need to pull your head out of the dirt and realize your not the center of the universe.

That’s not true. You can be a rogue jedi who practices the dark side and not be a fanatic of any sort. Why do you have to be a fanatic to practice the dark side? Quite frankly that doesn’t even make any sense :/

OK, first off that doesn’t make any sense, because that’s not what I said at all.

Secondly, when you speak of rogue Jedi are you talking about the so-called EU? If that’s the case, that’s got nothing to do with the SW films, which is what I was talking about.

Finally, you don’t have the slightest idea on how fanaticism is supposed to work and I won’t waste my time explaining it to you. Suffice it to say that no zealot starts off being fanatical. That’s not how it works. What I said is true. Not to be rude, but it’s not my problem that you’re clearly unable (or unwilling) to understand.

“All dark-siders are fanatics.” – You

That’s not what you said? :/ (that’s totally what you said, obviously..)

Quinlan Vos in Dark Disciple (as well as Asajj Ventress after Dooku takes out the nightsisters), and Anakin Skywalker in ROTS (he was hardly a “fanatic” when he first pledged loyalty to palpatine, he just wanted to become stronger and save his family). That’s all canon, and one of my examples are from one of the SW films.

My two take-aways: BB-8 is played by Gizmo the Mogwi, and I love how she pronounces Rey like Rye. Overall, the plot – at least the beginning – is starting to be fleshed out, it looks sorta generic, but eh, whatta yah gonna do?

They sure are pushing Rey’s character here in Asia, a continuation of their disturbing lack of coverage for JB’s character. But then again, Rey’s character fits Japanese culture like a glove: Young girl who lives in difficult environment waiting for her situation to change so she can realize her destiny passed down from her royal ancestors. That’s the main character in the anime “Laputa – aka – Castle in the Sky”, and probably about 60% of all anime protagonists. It’s almost as if Rey was conceptualized with Japan in mind.
Also, her story is very easy to explain, which the Japanese appreciate, anything too weird too fast and they get thrown out of it. JB’s character is a comparatively original character, and thus needs careful build-up and explanation – that paired with the fact that the Asian market [to be brutally frank] is more familiar and comfortable with Caucasians, and you got one-character marketing, leaving JB in the cold… for now…

Make no mistake, I think JB may actually be the biggest hit in Japan once people see the character in the film proper, this is just marketing I’m talking about.

But back to the important issue of BB-8’s voice; on one hand [my left hand] I profoundly enjoy BB-8’s chitter chatter and warbling. On the other hand, it REALLY IS IDENTICAL TO GIZMO. Like, seriously, “stock recording + electro-filter = BB-8”-identical. I guess that’s what we get for letting Kathy K get involved. 😐

I know it’ an old topic by now, but this trailer makes me think even more that the instability of Ren’s lightsaber is because he doesn’t have the skills to line up the crystal perfectly…makes it waver and spark. I also think that because of this, it generates a lots of heat from being inefficient….and the sides are really for the exhaust of excess blade energy that cannot be directed toward the main saber “blade”. It’s the only logical conclusion, since there’s no way he could think that those would protect his hands…since the metal at the base of each one could just be sliced through.

    • November 7, 2015 at 11:40 am
      Permalink

Interesting take on the function of the cross blades, makes good sense. I wonder if there is “adjustment” in the length of all the blades? Like, shorten the central blade right down while lengthening the side blades forming a light “pick”?… Another point I am curious about is the material used for the hilt – could it be the same/similar material used in the construction of Mandalorian armour? This armour is rumoured to be “resistant” to light sabers…

By the way…Luke could always train Rey in episode VIII without Rey knowing that he slipped to the dark side. I don’t really believe that though. I do totally believe that Rey has the Jedi abilities and not Finn. I also think that Finn either dies at the hand of Kylo Ren near the end of The Force Awakens or at least gets gravely injured. (you play with a light saber and you’ll you lose and arm, kid!) That last shot of the (american) trailer where you see the back of Kylo Ren’s head (and hair), if you freeze frame it just right it still looks like his face is still covered. “Klyo Ren” is a title, not a name.

I always thought it gives you a wider range of destruction. It seems like it would be particularly effective when outnumbered. Pretty much any way you swing that thing somebody’s going to get hit. And we know it doesn’t take much with a saber. From a defensive standpoint it would probably work better at deflecting blaster fire than a normal saber. And since there’s probably not a lot of people who fight with sabers at this point I doubt it has anything to do with protecting your hands. I like the exhaust port theory too though. Anyways I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. Can’t wait.

Hard to imagine being on Star Wars forums at 71. Then again, I don’t think the kid who grew up obsessed with these films thought his 41 year old self would be still ‘into it’! It’s also rubbing off on my 5 year old boy too. Although he loves all the clones stuff…traitor!

if you look at the fight between dooku anikan and obiwan in ep 2, dooku slides his blade down obiwans and easily cuts his arm so i think they dfinately can slide against each other

Oh yes, 4K TFA. That sounds lovely. I will have to buy a new telly. God I hope it’s good.
“What do you mean Gramps, you typed into a forum, with your fingers, spelling words which represented your thoughts?? Next you’ll be telling us you had to leave the house to go see the film, hahahahaha!”
