New Star Wars Rebels: Steps Into Shadow Clip Released.
When we last saw Ezra in Star Wars Rebels, we learned that he was actively trying to tap into the Dark Side in his quest to defeat the Empire and destroy the Sith. Now we see him employ that knowledge when he uses the Force to dominate the mind of an AT-DP operator.
Star Wars Rebels will resume on September 24.
Grant has been a fan of Star Wars for as long as he can remember, having seen every movie on the big screen. When he’s not hard at work with his college studies, he keeps himself busy by reporting on all kinds of Star Wars news for SWNN and general movie news on the sister site, Movie News Net. He served as a frequent commentator on SWNN’s The Resistance Broadcast.

Cannot wait.
Is this really the dark side?
Yep – deliberately picking single troopers off w/ a gun that size = ‘Not the Jedi way…’ as Anakin once put it
Because the size of the gun?
Because he’s targeting individual enemies?
Jedi’s do this all that time in the PT.
That makes no sense:
“size matters not” – Y.
Yeah…except it makes TOTAL sense. Did you not see the season finale? Sith Holocron in-tow, Maul loose, referring to Ezra as ‘my apprentice’. File under – ‘telescoping that s**t’
I *get* that the storyline is Ezra & temptation to darkside.
What I mean is that it’s an overstatement (i.e. doesn’t make sense) to somehow claim that it IS darkside because of a “big gun” “targeting individuals”.
“Around the survivors, a perimeter create!” – Yoda
Not…
“Around the survivors, a perimeter create…but not if you’ll target&kill any individual Geonosians with those big guns, wait & endanger survivors’ lives & use little guns once we land, you will!”
Yoda came in guns blazing.
A Jedi’s gonna use whatever’s at his disposal to “do the right thing”.
Again, not arguing about Ezra’s path/storyline…just that I don’t see *that* action is definitively *darkside*.
If Ezra doesn’t have the skill with saber/etc to take that thing on, he’s using his powers to save his friends/”the good cause”.
That is all.
It would seem your opinion is in the minority. From SW WIkia:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Mind_trick/Legends
The KOTR video games also differentiate between ‘affect’ & ‘dominate’ as light / dark skills…
Re: ” your opinion is in the minority.”
That’s ok if you think that. I’ve got the likes of Yoda & Obi-Wan on my side, so I’m in good company. 🙂
Just keep moving…don’t make eye contact. Dude, you’re PURE WEST! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYKFq2C5gNg
[waves hand]
(ooh…Like Ezra affecting someone else – is that *bad*?)
Move along, move along!
I guess I meant the power he is using, more so than the reason he is using it. A given power could be used for good or evil. Is the power of mind control inherently a dark side power?
Maybe it’s not mind control.
He could just be controlling the troopers hands? (Force moving)
i don’t think so. Force lightnig is described as “dark side energy” so I assume thats pretty dark-side only, but we have seen Luke use force choke and Obi-Wan use mind trickery (which is just as unsettling as mind control in some cases IMO). So I think its more how callus he is and the clear overkill that is going on here make it “dark”. If he could have mind controlled them to just drop their weapons or confuse them or have them stun themselves, he could have easily diffused the situation without that many deaths.
Agree – it’s not like Ezra was blowing away a bunch of innocents indiscriminately.
hãã.. will there be more traillers of “Rogue One”? No one I know is advised that there will be new SW this year yet.
No, remember Disney doesn’t want anyone to know this movie is coming out.
You know, as an aside, they should totally try that someday, way, way down the line with one of the Anthology films – something like The Woods. Audiences think they’re walking into one film, which is revealed to -BOOM- be something epic like a Ewan-starring Obi Wan film, or an enormous Old Republic adventure.
Which is why the newest trailer has 20 million views.
Logic.
seriously. Not many people I know where between those 20 million.
And the 40 million that watched the last trailer.
remember that many of these views are multiple views of the same people. Still, Rogue one isn’t advertised and blown high as they do with Marvel movies, at least not in my country.
YouTube doesn’t count views from the same device twice. otherwise, Gangnam style would have even MORE views.
oh. well. still, my point stands.
Actually, it doesn’t. 40 million INDIVIDUAL people (more, actually) watched the Rogue One trailer. The movie doesn’t come out for another 4 months. Calm the f u c k down.
You should calm down, I didn’t get minimally upset or anything.
I’m not upset. I’m just correct.
Well, to play devil’s advocate, half of that is us watching it 92837493 times within a week.
why wouldn’t Disney want anyone to know about the movie?
Just got caught up watching both seasons via DVD. Loving it!!! Just like Clone Wars changed my perspective of the movies, Rebels has done the exact same thing. ANH has much more depth than before. Hope thry can keep it up.
Yeah, Rebels and Clone Wars are by and large fantastic. I’m frequently surprised by how few casual (or even hardcore) Star Wars fans have checked them out. Every time I recommend a newbie scope out the Mandalore Plot episodes, for example, their minds are blown and they never turn back. 🙂
I would love to know the direction they’re going with Ezra. I don’t believe he’s Snoke, even though it would be cool, but his story isn’t going to have a happy ending is it….
If not Snoke, I would not be at all surprised if Ezra ends up being a founding member of the Knights of Ren. There are so many parallels between his acceptance and combination of both the light and dark sides of the Force, and knowledge and experience of ancient lore. If Ezra is Snoke, think how tragic it will be to see him get that badly mangled and power-hungry towards the end of Rebels… :'(
I know it could easily have been misdirection, but I’m pretty sure I remember the LFL story group stating at one point that Snoke was not human so I doubt he is Ezra. Still I could see the story going that direction pretty easily with all they have done so far with him on the show.
My thoughts exactly. A third possibility that would make both scenarios true is if Snoke is some non-corporeal entity that ends up possessing Ezra.
So this whole “the Force runs strong in your family” thing with Luke was really all just bullshit by Yoda then? I mean, since Ezra by the end of season one, and certainly by all indications here, has already far, far surpassed what Luke was ever able to achieve. I can’t help but feel that by taking the easy route and filling the galaxy just pre-ANH with Force users with abilities well beyond what we see from ANY of the Force users in the OT, they’ve done some damage to the overall saga.
It does weaken/diminishes(?) the OT movies seeing that galaxy was (now revealed) filed with mega powerful force users.
The whole message of the Jedi being thought to “all but extinct” for many years. That no one’s seen/heard of a force users in so long they’ve *forgotten*.
Yeah, exactly what I’m feeling about LFL constantly whipping out new force users and Jedi that survived the purge. It really weakens the importance of Luke and his journey if these idiots were really all over the place, just off-screen. I mean, I get it, there’s a very strong pull to, if you’re telling stories in AGFFA, play with the Force, but it’s bad for the overall story the movies tell, and makes Luke’s journey pretty meaningless.
They can re-dub the scene with Ben & Luke:
Orig: “Now the Jedi are all but extinct”
Inserted: “Well, ‘extinct’ was an over statement. I mean, now the Jedi are ‘less common’ Luke. I mean there were hundreds of us a few months ago & probably dozens more out there now… but….sheesh…you get the idea – not as many as our heyday!”
😉
hehe
Kind’a waters the scene down.
I think the other problem is that they keep ratcheting up the Force capabilities of *others* (outside the Skywalker line).
I mean Anakin went from being “the chosen one” & more midchl( I’ll defer from writing the rest as I know some have allergies to that ) than Yoda!
Yet in Rebels we have Ahsoka beat him down quite handily.
I’m worried they’re gona have The Force Unleashed Starkiller pulling Stardestroyers out of the sky by the time the new trilogy finishes.
As long as its luke pulling down star destroyers i’m ok with it.
Agreed!
If we’re gonna get some new “mega force” exposition, it’s gotta be Luke.
Not Rey, Finn, **Kylo.
**Whilst Kylo stopping the bolt was a cool idea & f/x, I don’t think it was necessary either. Kind’a makes you think “why didn’t Luke just grab some *blasts* & fling ’em at people.” The fact that he could be having a confrontation/conversation & just easily *hold* that bolt during all that was even harder to imagine with what we’d come to know of Force wielders.
Yeah, that thought hit me too watching TFA. My personal hope/ theory is that snoke is ancient and knows a lot of tricks and powers that were lost to the ages, so Luke and yoda wouldn’t have command of such powers. That’s why kylo has an ancient lightsaber design as well. Then again it could just be that JJ thought it would be cool to have him freeze a blaster bolt.
That could explain it. Otherwise, it just wasn’t needed for the story. He could’a bounced the bolt off his hand & ripped the gun out of Poe’s hand like Vader did to Han.
Maybe not even glancing his way whilst otherwise occupied.
That would’ve shown – this dude’s incredibly powerful.
Unless it serves the story, I’m hoping they don’t feel that they have to ratchet up the Force powers ea movie. [again – Luke pulling stardestroy down, still on table – coz he’s Luke dammit! hehe 😉 ]
And that the movie ALSO wants to tell us he’s a big crybaby who lacks the kind of power his grandfather wielded, but at the same time wants to show off how insanely power he is. That kind of inconsistency of character isn’t unique to Kylo in TFA, but I aint going off on THAT tangent here 🙂
I don’t think Kylo Ren lacks confidence over his powers, what he’s ultimately afraid of is his vulnerability to the light side (hence his eventful slaying of his father).
Sith get their strength from their emotions.
Kylo’s emotional. Doesn’t necessarily help in battle but can produce some interesting results. So it’s not entirely inconsistent. If every character was consistent, the story would be boring and characters flat.
It’s the common problem with how studios approach sequels – make it BIGGER! more EXPLODEY! more POWERFUL! CONSTANT DELIGHT!!!! Sure it might be momentarily cool, if dumb as a stump, but it creates all kinds of problems when you’re talking about something as expansive as SW. They need to figure out what the rules are, and unless it’s for a damn good dramatic reason, by in large stick to them. Otherwise you get, yeah, Starkiller and all the TFU stupidity.
Re: “studios approach sequels – make it BIGGER! more EXPLODEY! ”
Agree completely.
Big studios ( /mediocre directors ) don’t get that most often “less is more”.
kinda why I don’t like seeing stormtroopers flying through the air. It’s more explodey than the originals and it bugs me. Looks too “modern flash” for my tastes. They’ll keep screwing stuff up just to win over younger audiences that grew up with all the “more is more” crap.
You know, that doesn’t even bother me so much – it’s style and window dressing, and I’m fine with a new generation of film makers tackling this universe in their own way. It’s the nuts and bolts of the story and the universe stuff that gets up my nose when it accidentally (that’s the key too – they can absolutely play with expectation, but there HAS to be a reason and intent) screws with stuff that worked perfecty fine before.
THANK YOU^
yeah, I really do have to keep the films and the larger canon separate in my mind at times. Its hard enough to buy that everyone forgot about the Jedi being the most power beings in the galaxy, becoming an “ancient religion” that nobody believes in the span of 30ish years after the prequels, but with Rebels and even back in legends it got silly with how many jedi survived the purge and seemed WAY more equipped to stop Vader then Luke ever was. Personally interpret some of it as exaggeration of media, like in the old stylize clone wars cartoon when mace windu destroyed an entire legion of super battle droids with his BARE HANDS, but in the films was overwhelmed by a few dozen. Or in force unleashed when you could literally destroy starships and armies on a whim. It feels more like a tall tale then the myth that the overall saga is spinning.
Yeah. Funny I was just writing about Force Unleashed in my reply at same time.
Agree it’s probably best to keep them as separate.
The disparity in the rate/uniqueness of someone being powerful & the sheer *level* of power that manifests…being so different in the canon outside the films can have a major impact on how you view the movies.
Well its more than 30 years. Its been 30 years from ROTJ to TFA, but its actually been close to or over 50 years since order 66 and the elimination of jedi. People who knew of jedi were long gone by TFA unless they were like 10 years old in the prequels and even then it still makes sense imo
No, bc Luke’s journey is about his father. Only LUKE could turn vader.
Not at all what Ben or Yoda expected of him. They expected him to kill Vader AND the Emperor. They expected Luke to be strong enough to do that, AND THEN to bring the Jedi back. Luke was the only one who thought saving Vader was either possible or desirable. I agree that in terms of character and story, that’s Luke’s arc, but it doesn’t have anything to do with establishing him as what we should, by RotJ, consider a powerful Force user.
Yes, they did. But they also didn’t expect him to leave his training in the middle of it.
One thing you should consider: Luke doesn’t become a full-fledged Jedi until the end, when he throws his lightsaber away. THAT is the moment he becomes a true Jedi. It has nothing to do with his power, but with his outlook and mindset.
I still have to go back and review – but I do believe that Yoda never actually mentioned ‘killing’ Vader, and for good reason, Yoda knew that’s how the Emperor and Vader would not be defeated, and why he exiled himself. I think Obi-Wan did tell Luke that he had to kill Vader, which is obviously what Obi-Wan’s mistake was.
It’s an unlikely theory I admit, but this would all make sense if Ezra turned out to be Snoke or a Knight of Ren, and was indeed far more powerful in many aspects of the Force than Luke.
100% agree. They’ve chosen a bad era, as they pretty much can’t do anything new without contradicting/diminishing Luke’s story.
This is why the animated shows while canon, are still very distinct from the live movies.
Good point. It might’ve been better to focus on non-Force sensitives or minimize that aspect. The Force powers & saber wielding, apparently so close to times of ANH def impact viewing the OT, if not mentally *compartmentalized*. 😉
It was a pep talk! He was boosting up his self esteem so he can stop sulking and kill his daddy.
Canonically the most powerful we’ve seen Luke was in ROTJ but he didn’t really use all his power in that. He did, however, defeat a Sith Lord. Luke and Vader both seem to use their strength in the force to enhance their physical strength. In the canon comic series “Obi-Wan and Anakin” Anakin is shown having trouble taming a wild beast with the force. Ezra, on the other hand, seems to excel at that sort of thing. He was able to summon the giant Fyrnock in season 1 and in season 2 he was surprised and confused at there being a fearsome creature he couldn’t control. I think the Skywalkers are far more powerful than Ezra who just has a specific talent for mind tricks.
Yes, but, he defeated a Sith Lord who was a half-cyborg, crippled old man, then got his ass handed to him by a dude in a dress, so I’m not sure I buy that argument. Also, Ezra has ripped a vehicle sized blast door apart, so it’s not just a talent for mind tricks they’ve gifted him with.
I don’t think Ezra’s vehicle ripping ability’s came in useful when the half-cyborg Sith Lord defeated him. Force powers used on inanimate objects with the help of you’re master can’t help you against a well trained Sith with 30 years of experience and a medi-clorian count ten bazillion times your own.
Right, but compare that with Luke struggling to just get his saber from a few feet away. There are pretty clear limits to the Force in the OT, mostly what we find by following Luke. We see that Vader can use it to throw stuff, and Luke can jump pretty high. The problem I’ve got is not even so much that the Jedi were shown to have more and more powerful abilities, that’s fine, it’s set far enough away from the OT story that it’s ancient history. It’s that by filling up the galaxy RIGHT BEFORE ANH HAPPENS with powerful Force users, it makes you kinda go “why bother?” with Luke – he’s no longer special, no longer the only hope for the Jedi, he’s just one more Force dude.
Luke had had zero training when he struggled for the saber. Ezra has had three years of training under both Kanan and Ahsoka. Having any kind of expanded universe is going to cheapen the OT. I think Filoni is doing the best he can.
AND…Ezra can affect animals, which means he could totally make these guys follow Zeb around all day, just humping away at his leg(s). Karabast! (That’d be me anyways…the Fred/George Weasley of Force-wielders!)

No, they haven’t. It’s not that Luke was SO powerful with the Force. It’s that he was good and kind and was able to bring Vader back from the dark side.
Sounds like you missed the point of the whole thing.
You’re just arguing for the sake of it now. “The Force runs strong in your family”, Anakin is the chosen one, “you have a power I don’t understand and could never have”, hell even KYLO is special because of his family – it’s almost like you have to close your eyes, plug your ears and go “NANANANANANANANA NOT LISTENING!!!!” to try and defend that position. How do you miss the part of the heroes journey where Luke is special, because of what he does, but also because of his birth and lineage. Jesus.
I didn’t. The Force is strong with Luke. But he is not the one destined to stop Vader because of his Force powers, but because he finds the good in Vader again.
Yoda and Obi-Wan thought Luke should fight and destroy the Sith, but he found a way to do it without killing them.
And Leia saying that about the power is BEFORE she learns she is a Skywalker.
Yes, Luke was strong with the Force. But nowhere do we find that he is supposed to be the MOST powerful.
And back to the Ezra point, you are missing some key things: 1. We don’t know the whole story yet and 2. He is using the dark side and has access to some really secret stuff. It’s not apples to apples.
If this ruins the saga for you, stop watching now then.
I see your point, yet, Ezra’s weakness is how easily he is tempted by the DS. coincidentally, Luke’s greatest strength in the Force could be how he continously rejects the anger, hatered and fear in the OT
Getting some Ezra is Snoke vibes on this one. Either way, it’d be most badass if Snoke did this kind of thing wth entire starships or fleets in VIII or IX…next level darkside skills.
Same. That felt like it could be a tragic Snoke tragedy. Tangled web of Maul, etc. Gets all ill affected, deformed in some way. Force Growth?
It seems unlikely, but Ezra does bear a resemblance to Snoke, especially in the nose – if he got badly mangled up and somehow his eyes went black, he’d look pretty similar.
Damn that’s some cold shit lol
I look in the comments and see only complaints about force users pre-ANH. But I want Thrawn!
I’m not sure what they can really do with him though. That’s either a good thing, in that I’ll be surprised, or a bad thing in that he’ll be just another villain of the week for this show.
they might use him to kill all the rebels characters off before ANH. I personally don’t know either, but have hopes for him.
It would be awesome if the final showdown was on Tatooine. Vader and his forces kill the jedi and he himself mortally wounds Maul, who escapes.
Maul wanders through the Dune Sea, barely alive, only to stumble on a friend from long ago. It would be nice if the series ends with a heart to heart talk between Maul and Obi-Wan where the latter tells him about a boy who will defeat their common enemy. Maul’s dying words are that he tells Kenobi that a time will come when he must sacrifice himself for what he believes in. Obi-Wan doesn’t know what he meant by that. But it would give a whole new meaning to that smirk he made when he gave his life on the Death Star.
DA END
oh man I’m so in love with what you wrote, this would be freakin PERFECT. i see zero chances for it happening in the dumbed-down, no risks taking new Canon, but oh boy, would it be great!
That was the shorter version of “my” ending of Maul’s life. The longer one included meeting a young Luke while wandering through the desert and Luke offers him help, and a drink. Maul sees the boy’s strength and is baffled by his kindness helping out a complete stranger. Luke asks Maul to stay put so he can bring him some food, but when he returns, Maul is no where to be found. Now that ties into the upper part I first wrote.
You’re right about the no-risk taking canon part…a sad truth…
But there is hope 😀 …I hope…
Okay, I’m learning English and I don’t understand one thing. Why in “Steps Into Shadow” the word “into” is started with a capital letter unlike, for example, “The Machine in the Ghost”. What’s the difference? Or is it an error? And what these short connecting words are called in English?
Good questions! The word “into” and others like it are referred to as prepositions. In formal titles, prepositions can either be capitalized or not – both are correct, though the more modern style is to capitalize them. Hope that helps! More info on prepositions in English is available here:

Thanks for the answer!:)
Anything I can do to help bring the world together, even if it’s small, I’m there.
Ezra is shaping up to be a Starkiller-like character. But as long as they get rid of all other force users by the end of the show (just so that Yoda, Kenobi, Vader and Sidious are the only ones left) it’s fine by me 😀
The only way to fix things now is to make Rey related to Ezra, thus explaining why she is so strong with the force. Being about the same age as Luke, Ezra could be Rey’s father for example.
Ezra won’t be Snoke. He’s took small.
Well, he’s still a child, and we don’t know how tall Snoke really is yet.
He’s 17 here, so not that far from adulthood.
Snoke is said to be over 7 feet tall, as far as rumors go.
Good point – though to be fair we still don’t know how those rumors will stack up, literally and figuratively
I really hate the idea that somebody has to be related to somebody or somebody is actually someone else.
