David Koepp to Write the Indiana Jones 5 Screenplay
Just 2 days after the official announcement on Indiana Jones 5, we have the name of probably the most important person in the production -the writer.
From TheHollywoodReporter:
David Koepp, a longtime Spielberg confederate who wrote 1993’s Jurassic Park, has been tapped to pen the script for the new adventure, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
This won’t be Koepp’s first swing on the jungle vine, as the screenwriter, who also wrote Spielberg movies The Lost World: Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds, co-wrote the previous Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Lucas’ involvement in the new movie project remains unclear. He was not mentioned in Disney’s announcement this week and if the new Star Wars movies are any indication, he will not be involved. (He was vocal in saying Force Awakens did not use his ideas.)

Not going to condemn this right out of the gate – the script for CS, while pretty weak and unfocussed, is a mishmash of the ideas in the Darabont draft and whatever connective tissue Koepp was able to come up with, so I don’t put the blame entirely on him for that sloppy script. Still think Lucas should be involved to come up with a story and McGuffin if he has the inclination to do so.
Totally – Lucas should be involved, as a consultant. I’m a strong believer his ideas should of been used for TFA, but executed with style and tweaked where needed. I’m not a hater of TFA, but found it a little tedious by the time we hit another trench run. We’ll never know if Lucas had something a little more original that a great homage to the OT.
I suspect he did, based on how vocal he was about TFA feeling like a nasty divorce before catching himself and appologizing for the outburst.
That whole incident was a charade to distance himself from being hounded about Star Wars and getting the distance he needs from the franchise so that Disney could take ownership and he can get on with his ” third act” of life.
Charlie Rose is his racing buddy and Rose gets his check cut from Lucas’s wife, the producer of the show, who had the ability to snub that interview.
That was an orchestrated marketing stunt, just like the selfies that George Lucas posed for in comic book stores, browsing for Star Wars magazines.
Look up you tube for: George Lucas ruined my vacation.
The video shows Lucas sitting alone on a park bench.
Lucas never got inspired like Dave Filoni said about Lucas’s suddenly wanting to do another trilogy.
Lucas got in bed with Disney in 1979 and planned the deal before he ever finished hashing out the first trilogy, which was brain stormed at table meeting with Kasden and the like.
Don’t worry, with Lucas it’s not personal…it’s only business.
He’s not worried about his ideas not being used, trust me.
Besides, it would be a very short read in chicken scratch on yellow legal pad.
Do you have proof of all of this, or should we just take your word?
Watch The Empire Strikes Back, the logo is there, it’s all you need.
That doesn’t help much considering 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm are the only logos used in the intro.
Furthermore, the credits only consist of the Dolby Stereo logo, RSO Records logo, and the Motion Pictures of America logo.
But you can spell “Disney” using letters from all of those! You gotta read between the lines! Follow the money, man!
When Luke goes out the window, is a metaphor for the deal of Lucas the independent going into the abyss.
Mickey Mouse is in frame.
Follow the money, 20th Century fox did not find empire, Lucas did.
How? With privitized banks and ABC ( not at the time fully owned by Disney… But affiliated.
Star Wars did not air on cable or TV for five years from initial release and it’s debut was on ABC.
In short as an FYI: Disney unofficially assisted in funding two thirds of the original trilogy.
You have a very…vivd imagination. Aaaaaaaaand on ‘ignore’ for being crazy.
IT’S IN REVELATIONS, PEOPLE!!!!!
What a very bizarre rant. I…I don’t even know where to start to respond to that curious perspective, so Ima just pretend you didn’t say it. I will respond to the last part though – you misunderstand me; I don’t have any worry for Lucas’ feelings here – I just want to see a story shaped by him because that’s one of the things he does so very well. Having built, lost, and rebuilt his empire, and having had to listen to a great deal of truly offensive abuse over some mediocre movies for the last two decades, I would respect his decision if he chose not to be involved. However I would prefer not to to see him left out of this because I suspect the movie would suffer for it, much as TFA likely did.
So you believe everything Lucas says as truth?
I don’t loath him or anything he has done.
I was just making a statement, not a rant.
Nor was I trying to be condescending to you or anyone else.
Saying that I’m bizarre is just just like saying you cannot comprehend, and that’s fine.
TFA was fine and there were four other versions of A new hope that were penned, with others involved, way before Star Wars got into principle photography. I’m happy with what was done.
I’m just saying to you that interviews are not always to be taken at face value and are scripted.
Watch the behind the scenes of the Phantom Menace with Lucas and Spielberg, which was a rehearsed skit.
At dusk touring the set Steven breakes a prop, a battle droid’s arm.
The same thing happened with Jaws, they both toured the set after hours and Lucas broke the Shark.
So what we watch as natural accuracies behind the scenes are not always real, they are scripted, as in orchestrated, which was my point, my opinion to someone else about Lucas’s statments with Charlie Rose. That was a charade and should not be taken as the status quo on how Lucas feels about Disney or Star Wars…He was haming it up to the fans and cutting the cord…its only business Sonny.
What? I can’t believe it…. Just can’t…
Why is SWNN publishing articles related to something non-Star Wars related. Yes, it’s also from Lucasfilm, and yes one of the main characters of SW happens to be the main character in the Indy movies but come on, the fact of the matter is that this is still not Star Wars news.
If you want, create a new website that will be more appropriate, but please don’t clutter up this site with irrelevant, non-SW related news (and yes, I know that the site owners have a right to post whatever they want, but that’s only within the realm of SW stuff; in other words, there are parameters in what feels right content-wise).
You already posted news about Disney/Lucasfilm confirming Indy 5, leave it at that and let other sites (whether Indy-specific or generic film blog sites) post Indy-related articles.
I understand your point but i’m really ok with that.
I think most of SW fans are Indiana Jones fans too.
Just pass the news and don’t look back ;P
By the way, i enter SWNN five-six times per day (mínimum). Just knowing i will find Indiana 5 news here it’s another reason to came even more.
Hope I will find a site with lots of good Indiana Jones news as SWNN has with SW. Meanwhile, i’m happy to read here first.
Thanks for sharing.
Then set up your own exclusive SW only website.
your so fucking annoying
So are people who don’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re” Weird Al should beat you to death with a dictionary.
Yeah, but considering how intrinsically connected Indiana Jones and SW were in the past, I’ll give SWNN a pass on this one.
I mean, *I find it interesting, seeing as it’s essentially the same production team and all.
Actually SWNN gave us a heads up when they first reported this new Indy film. They said they hope we don’t mind them posting news about the new film. I didn’t respond because I’m ok with them posting Indy news on this site. I suppose some people will get stubbornly anal about these sorts of things though.
Yeah, like I don’t have a life outside of this site and I am “in the know” about everything that is published here.
-_-
I’m not a typical nerd/geek like a lot of people here seem to be. I’ve got things to do in the real world other than needing to spend entire days on this site trying to chime in on everything and discuss things with everyone.
Unbunch your panties Martha Stewart. Who cares it’s all news directed at exactly the same fan base so get back to the basement. Those video games aren’t going to play themselves
Sorry, I love Star Wars but don’t stereotype all SW fans by making the claim that they’re all Indy fans (whom most are Gen X-ers by the way since most of the Indy movies were done in the 80’s and only that older generation identifies with those movies more so than Millennials and younger people that really don’t care much about seeing some Nazi-era movies).
All this being said, I have nothing against any of the Indy movies, they’re good, but they 1) don’t mean anything to me like Star Wars movies do (they’re just movies for entertainment for me) and 2) I couldn’t care less (nor am I interested in trying to understand) how Gen-X’ers have romanticized Indy as well. They’re just movies about some guy’s adventures and that’s all (stop being blinded by nostalgia and stop putting them on a pedestal).
I just hope that they don’t screw this one up, because it will almost certainly be the last Indiana Jones movie with Harrison in it.
I wonder what Kylo Ren has to say about this…
Well he wasn’t a big fan of Han Solo, maybe Indiana Jones is more his cup of tea.
Yes, I think Indiana has more Vader than Solo 😉
I’m now worried about this. Darabont would be better, or maybe 2 writers to test out ideas on eachother. This is genuinely worrying. He’s not the best writer of this.
The only person who thinks Darabont would be better has the initials F.D.. His Indy script was terrible, no matter what nerds think. That Speilberg liked it doesn’t say much to me, as all of the terrible ideas in the Indy films tended to be his. Worse, all of Darabont’s Indy dialogue sounded like it was coming out of the mouth of Sam Spade or a Jimmy Cagney character – he just doesn’t have a good grasp of the character’s voice.
The Walking Dead…just saying
Please leave me the link to the Frank Darabont script, that would be priceless:)
So let me get this straight, you dislike Spielberg and blame him for the worst things in the Indy films (which is a giant sack of bullshit btw) but you don’t blame him for the terrible writing in KOTCS even though Koepp is 100% his guy and probably wouldn’t have much of a career without Spielberg?
Ya sorry, Spielberg indeed did make some terrible choices on that last film, but you’re fucking nuts if you think Darabont wouldn’t have turned out an overall better script for the movie than David Koepp literally writing scenes on set.
Worse thing about Darabont’s draft was it was extremely close to Raiders of the Lost Ark, but here’s the thing, it was just a draft and whatever they ended up with after was far worse.
Just one thing; no aliens please … Go find Pandora’s box or Atlantis
I’ll reserve judgment. The fact remains that the worst ideas for Crystal Skull came from the same deluded mind that brought us Jar Jar Binks and midiclorians. Without Uncle George’s massive brain diarrhea clogging up the drain I’m much more confident in the writing of this script.
Actually, by his own admission, the worst ides came from the mind that brought us 1941. The ‘Berg has always been the one with the goofiest ideas for Indy, right back to the original story conferences for Raiders.
They’ve already stated in interviews that the aliens were Lucas’ idea
1. Not really, that was someone else’s (that was just a cover)
2. I actually didn’t hate that idea (I like that movie and I’m not blinded by nostalgia). Furthermore, RT rating is pretty high and if anything, it’s polarizing (check IMDB as well) but there’s still a very good chunk of people who like it so stop trying to speak for every Indy fan (and stop making assumptions about everyone) as is they all think the same way becuse guess what? They don’t!
3. Enough with the scapegoating. It was a team/collaborative effort so if you’re going to criticize, do the entire team, not just one person.
4. Your name seems to imply that you’re Eastern European (most likely Greek). Who cares what some person from some irrelevant region whose native language isn’t even English thinks. You’re just jumping on the hate bandwagon because it’s “trendy” and engaging in groupthink because you prefer to let someone else do the thinking for you instead of thinking for yourself. Stick to the arts in your country buddy!
So you are saying that because I’m greek I’m not entitled to an opinion? I grew up with these movies too, and I just stated what Spielberg has said in interviews, without taking a side or criticising anyone.
You wrote an entire essay attacking me based on a single neutral sentence, so maybe it’s not my opinion that triggered this, but the fact that you are obviously racist.
By the way, I can communicate in 4 languages, including English. What about you ‘buddy’? Can you do anything else besides being an embarrassing representative of your country on the internet? (rhetoric question, since I don’t really care for any answer an anonymous fascist degraded person has to give from his computer).
You’re still Greek and English is still not your native language (despite you knowing how to speak it, you will never know the intricacies and the nuances of the language in everyday communication nor how to speak it such eloquent formality. Sorry, that’s just how things are). You will never understand the nuances and the intricacies of the arts from American culture either since you didn’t grow up in the most powerful country on Earth (USA).
Oh, I know how to speak 3 languages (yeah, one less than you but that’s still enough to be impressive).
Anyway, stick to the arts in your culture and society buddy since you will NEVER understand the culture and the arts from English-speaking countries, especially from the US.

Whoah! You really ARE full of yourself aren’t you?
Speilberg disagrees with you, and the fridge is a holdover from his first thoughts on BTTF. If you need further convincing, read the Raiders story session transcripts – Speilberg is ALWAYS the one pushing to add just insane, stupid things, and Lucas is ALWAYS the one reining him in, saying the whole thing has to stay grounded.

I was talking about the whole alien concept of crystal skull.
Deceptive click-bait articles (why am I not surprised that they come from the AV Club, a site that has proven time and time again how non-credible they are).
Noooooooooooooooooooo! Only Lindelof would be worse. I’m hoping Lucas was the reason the last one turned out so bad but Koepp’s track record is abyssmal and he’s only gotten work due to his Speilburg ass kissing.
Does Disney own Indy too?
They own Lucasfilm (Star Wars, Indiana Jones…)
Concrete data and stats (not angry fanboy comments who are hopped up on nerdrage simply because things didn’t match what they made up in their minds).

Thanks.
